I love “I heard your voice too”, but I also love the translation, “Thank you Meryl. It reached me. Your voice”.

It cements the parallel between them as foolhardy, reckless idiots who never give up, as well as makes a neat little call back to the first episode where Meryl ropes him in. Meryl’s voice reached him in time to save him, and Vash’s wire reached her in time to save her from Knives.

Mine hour is come. A prolegomenon on the Book of Common Prayer: as a single text, it probably has the most decisive influence on the Anglophone literary imagination from the 16th century onward. Through the time of Austen’s writing, it’s part of most people’s daily lives (more than the King James Bible or Shakespeare, for instance.) I could digress on the theological and social debates that underlie its formation and revision, because I find them fascinating, but I will spare you. Point is: it’s influential, and it continues in use for centuries before substantial revision, so the language and some of the ideas would have been archaic by Jane Austen’s day, but... this is still the Marriage Service. The edition that would have been used for the Wentworths is that of 1662.

If you’ve seen the 1995 Pride and Prejudice -- a safe bet, probably? -- you’ve heard the opening of this liturgy, and I think its use is possibly the smartest choice of that very smart adaptation, simultaneously highlighting and undercutting the meaning of the text in a way that I hope Austen would have approved, showing the messy ways in which humans live our lives... and how we still aspire to human love that mirrors the divine, that makes us both better and happier.

Anyway! Despite the fact that the BCP contains Forms of Prayer to be Used at Sea, I rather think that Anne has a more easy familiarity with the liturgies of the church than her husband; that she is readier to view this as a homely as well as a solemn thing. But Frederick Wentworth is going to vow to love, comfort, honor, and keep this woman, in sickness and in health, keeping only unto her, and I think he’s going to do such a good job. He will vow to cherish her until parted from her by death. And the final vow of their joint sequence, before the priestly prayer confirming them as man and wife, is: “with this ring I thee wed, with my body I thee worship, and with all my worldly goods I thee endow.” I don’t know whether he would still be pale and grave, at this point, or just impossibly fond and pleased, but that... that is a vow. Made not only in the sight of God but also, I suspect, of the Harvilles holding hands, Sophy Croft borrowing her husband’s handkerchief, and Lady Russell looking fixedly at a stained glass window.

Aftershockshipping Playlist

After reading Chapter 40 of @weekend-whip‘s Born to Be a 21st Century Ninja, I... managed to talk myself into making a playlist for Aftershock (Cole x Jesse)... and Ren (weekend-whip) wanted to see it, so... here it is, I guess.

Just a heads up, I don’t normally share playlists, but I just needed to showcase the vibe these two together give me. It’s mostly inspired by the events of the chapter itself & what could’ve been logically playing during Tox’s set at Rockshot, but also just general vibes outside of that setting, though some may feel like they are from a specific perspective (like, you can feel which song is Cole or Jesse), or it is completely unrelated but meshed well into the vibes so I thought “screw it, throw it in”. I’m also thinking that this could be expanded on in future, but let’s keep it “small” for now.

Now, I did say I was making an Aftershock playlist, but I also wanted to make a playlist for Jesse’s futile efforts to get over Cole because Glacier keeps getting in the way (poor thing lol, not your fault Cole is like a puppy with heart eyes when Zane is present). Just the idea of someone hopelessly in love with another, yet the object of their affections is not only oblivious, but is hopelessly in love with someone else as well, so they try to bury those feelings, try to cut it out of the heart, on for it to hurt them in the process because that love is just rooted so deeply... and perhaps, eventually realising that they can’t give up, that they can’t let go so easily (when letting go is just too hard & painful).

Some character headcanons to tide you all over so you know what you're getting into;

Nai Saverem while very talented with combat, prefers to avoid it if at all possible. Fixing his diving suit is a pain.

His entire outfit is streamlined for diving, his dry bag always with him so he can jump out of his regular clothes in a hurry and dive in one fluid motion. Being ready to swim is an essential in a world full of sea creatures trying to kill you.

Think subnautica meets Avatar (way of water). Advanced tech in some areas, primitive tech in others.

There is land and those are where the cities are but it's rare and most towns are actually floating ones that have been anchored thanks to plants helping them set up their home. Nai often assists in this.

The water on the planet is so deep humans can't go down safely without the assistance of heavy duty submarines which are still very rare tech. Only plants and those having been experimented can.

There is plenty of wildlife and wilderness but sadly most of it is too far below the waves for humans to reach with ease. Plants still generate most of their resources but Nai has been enforcing using as little as possible.

When Nai gets anxious (which is often but he will never admit it), his plant form starts showning through which is a mix of trimax and tristamp forms. Bioluminesence and wings around his neck that try to cover his face. For his reason his coat has a high collar he often zips up.

He isn't actually against intimacy and while he doesn't actively seek it out (vaguely ace tendancies), if someone showed interest or someone he cares about wanted to fool around he'd get down with them! They just have to know he's more interested in giving than recieving and often does oral to hide that he doesn't have the same genetalia humans do.

He'd indulge in kissing and dates too honestly, but he wouldn't be too invested unless the person was special to him. He sees humans as beings who actively need affection to function correctly so he will be very 'caretaker' like with it. Think of it like a zookeeper providing enrichment to the animals there. To humans though, he's the perfect gentleman having no idea he's just being nice.

He is the lead 'researcher' and essentially doctor to plants that have acclimated to the planet's waters and spends much of his time ensuring an optimum environment for them.

He doesn't approve of the Eye Of Micheal's experiments but mainly because they are done non-consentually but does see the value in helping humanity modify themselves to better fall in tune with nature and plants themselves. If the experiments were consentual he would endorce it.

Nai's Legato is his assistant researcher, and he is very fond of the man. If a little exasperated on his insistance that Nai is divinity and putting himself on the line to protect when Nai could swat aside the leviathans like childs play.

Vash in this world is a little too eager to sacrifice humans to ensure their plant brethren are safe, incredibly posessive and constantly trying to convince the planet would be better off used for the plants with how well adapted they are while humanity struggles. All this spans from Vash learning how humanity's original planet earth was squandered and left to rot after it was exhausted from all its resources and livability.

Nai agrees with Vash to a point, but he still likes having humans around even if their livespans are incredibly short compared to theirs.

Nai has his own solar surfer vessel he uses to get around. Like a surf board with a small hydro engine and solar sail fabric he made himself to get him around quickly. The technology isn't new and docks often have space for personal vessels for those moving between towns but his is unique and certainly faster than most.
