This drama has a mixture of a lot of genres all rolled up into one. It’s kind of like a family, law, crime, mystery, thriller all wrapped into one. The storyline is pretty well cohesively written as well as the characters were too. The only downside I saw for series was the chemistry for the main leads. Acting for both of them we’re excellent, I just wasn’t feeling it between them.

I don’t have any interest in Jeong Nyeon (not a time period I am interested in, I am benignly indifferent to the cast, there is no romance but the genre is not a rare genre where I don’t even care about that) but it occurred to me when I was looking at something related to it - it’s based on a webtoon, right? (People were complaining that the lesbian love story from the original was removed which is how I know it’s based on a webtoon.)

Why are more and more kdramas based on webtoons? I remember the time where 90% of screenplays were originals and to see a drama based on something else (the way SKKS was based on a novel or The Smile Has Left Your Eyes was based on a jdrama for example) was unusual.

I wonder if it’s because they keep cutting ep numbers and so don’t have time for set up and hope that carries over from the source plus risk averse situation where they hope there is a built in audience.

I have nothing against adaptations per se but I wish that trend would stop. One of the true pleasures of watching is not knowing where it’s going yes - Flower of Evil or Mawang or Que Sera Sera or Beyond Evil or Chuno or Master’s Sun or even last year’s My Dearest or or or were a wild ride because of that, but more importantly I want more stories not the same limited amount of stories just adapted into different mediums.

Oh well. My list of main wishes for kdramas is:

1. Go back to adult sageuks and high class melos

2. Go back to proper episode counts

3. For Netflix and Disney to evaporate from kdrama world

And only 4, is more original stories.

I am gonna get none of it so might as well make wishes.
