As someone who doesn’t know a lot about ultramarines (to lazy to read, don’t wanna deal with memes) if you would be so kind, could you give me a quick summary of their captains, or at least just your favs?
Captain Severus Agemman. Poor guy; he used to be captain of the second company until the entire first company got eaten by Tyranids, and they just moved all of them to the first. Politically this is a problem for him because some in the Senate think he hasn't earned the spot. He is a very by the book Ultramarine. He only does codex-compliant manoeuvres. Has a huge beef with Sicarius which is hilarious. They are like two chihuahuas going at each other every time they meet 😂
You thought I was going to write Sicarius here, didn't you? Well, he isn't a battle captain anymore. He is captain of Guilliman’s honour guard now. The captain for the second company is Sevastus Acheran, and he.. Exists? I think Acheran is a wasted opportunity to do some cool shit. Give Fabian command of the second, or even better, give it to Praxor Manorian. Imagine the story potential! But no, we are stuck with Acheran. I can't really say much about him. All mentions of him are in an out-of-print supplement that I won't buy for scalper prices just to maybe get some info on him.
Fabian! Mikael Fabian is basically “We got Sicarius at home”. They have the same loadout and gear, temperament, and personality. Fabian has a cybernetic eye and red trim. That's the only way to tell them apart. That and that he is a failure 😛 I usually joke and say that Fabian is the Ultramarines’ “damsel in distress”, because every book I've read with him in it is basically that he has failed and needs saving, but I still love the guy.
Uriel Ventris. This one people usually know. I think that if Ventris weren't born on Calth, he wouldn't have been an Ultramarine. He doesn't care for politics or image, and he has no influential friends at all. He doesn't care for the Senate. He should probably have been a Salamander or something (he looks good in green). But something he does have is that Ultramarine luck.
Caito Galenus. Galenus on the other hand doesn't have the classic Ultramarine luck. He is very different from the others I've mentioned, much more laid back. I would almost call him anxious. He is a master of void warfare, though, and is the guy you want to command a fleet. Allegedly has beef with Marneus Calgar because Calgar commanded his company on Galenus’ first mission and got pretty much everyone killed.
These are the five battle captains, the rest are more of reserve companies, but I want to name Numitor as an honourable mention. He is the most Ultramarine out of all of them. He is the captain of the eighth company. It’s very unclear if he still lives. He is gone from the codex, but he is featured in the book “Honour and Iron”, which takes place in Era Indomitus, so I don't know what to trust.
If you are into audiobooks, I would recommend “Blades of Damocles” with him as a protagonist (and bonus baby Sicarius as a Sergeant) I think it's very good and has a good view of how Ultramariens actually operate in the field. (And a lot of examples of what they shouldn't do )
(And We have Decimus Felix, but he is captain of the 11th company, and that is a can of worms I want to open later. Its so funny to me that the Ultramarines are no longer codex compliant)

Today's Warhammer thought of the day is that Warhammer is the worst book series that is not actually a series because it will go "here is the most precious boy to have ever existed and you will love with your whole heart forever" and then the book will end and you'll just never see him again ever

I often find myself fascinated by cawl with the primaris bc did you know decimus androdinus felix used to be terrified of them? but cawl considers him (and the primaris in general, it feels) like their son(s). and cawl with their subcawls and, in essence, fronting probably (to my mind at least) had different personality "loadouts" for different things. checkup cawl vs surgeon cawl vs recovery cawl and so on. predictable but not consistent
they're simultaneously the primaris' dad/surgeon/researcher/torturer (given the processes of both becoming an astartes and a primaris as well as shit like felix basically just going in and out of stasis to be experimented on until he turned out right) and I just.... would LOVE to see more of this in a book. also I like cawl

the reason I find Belisarius to be a very creepy character is that he's extremely fun, cheerful and powerful, while ignoring others' consent whenever he pleases [and disclosing crucial information whenever he feels like it, if at all] - from the human experimentation and brainwashing his underlings, to continuing to resurrect Qvo against his will, to deciding to act in a way that helps Decimus Felix without any input from the man himself, to not telling Alpha Primus, his own child, what he really is and having him serve Belisarius as essentially a patsy hand-extension for thousands of years to the point where Alpha Primus has resigned himself to having no life outside that.

I'm grateful that I get to watch Shogun and it seems pretty good so far. Apparently, I had some sort of image about Blackthorn in my head, because he definitely looks odd to me at the moment. Not exactly a fan. The odd part is his voice sounds sort of like Russel Crow, and I half expect to see him or hear something like "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." But why does everything have to be so FAST! I need more of the culture, of how little things look like, like the reactions to the different cultures. Toranaga though - I love him so far! Also Rodriges - I loved the several minutes we had with him.
Also reading Shogun made me realize a lot about The Last Samurai

Decimus Felix for Marine Meat Monday
It may be easter, but there's still meat on the menue. And with him being in cryo-stasis that long, it's fitting the ressurection-theme that's going on.

I just finished listening to Skitarius, and now I'm listening to Tech-Priest, but now I have a major complaint. The book calls Stroika swarthy several times, and yet he's always drawn as white
Tbh before actually seeing art I hadn't really spent any brain cells conceptualizing Stroika with his helm off, but i do recall the descriptions you're referring to. I think in the case of the most Well Known art of Stroika by Celestial-Fang it's more of a personal reimagining to fit his preference for white haired twinks to corrupt than anything meant to be at all accurate to description lol. I do get your complaints tho, I have similar ones about art pieces I've seen of Decimus Felix who is similarly described as having darker skin, and who I thought until very recently was on the cover of Dawn of Fire: Avenging Son.

Since starting this blog as a Vampire Diaries blog back in 2012, I've gone through a number of iterations. After my stint as a TVD blog for the better part of three years, I expanded out into a multi-purpose, whatever is my current hyperfixation blog. There are, of course, always the long running staples (Star Wars, Warhammer, LOTR) but I have gone through some pretty specific weird ones. The summer/fall of Mad Max: Fury Road, my years long Steve Rogers obsession, my summer of The Musketeers, that month of The Originals. The year I lost my mind and started watching dizis (lol, thank god that one is over).
The point is, I've had many throughout the years, but I haven't had one ongoing and deep since maybe the first season of House of the Dragon. (That one ended abruptly when I finished reading Fire and Blood and realized that the source material was stupid as shit, the writers were possibly dumber and this show was going to make me mad sooner than later.) In addition to an extremely busy past year or so and the disappointment of the end of The Siege of Terra, I haven't really had anything that has captured my interest for a long period of time. (Decimus Androndinus Felix, Lord of Vespator and the Eastern Marches is the current love of my life but he was only in four books and now they are done and I am SAD).
Welp. This summer I spent a week with my brother @bonesingerofyme-loc as I do every summer, and in light of the extreme heat and our extreme laziness, we decided to binge watch the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender. He's been a fan for a long, long time, but since I was like, 16 when it came out, I wasn't exactly the target demographic. And its taken me a while into adulthood to truly embrace certain interests, and he patiently waited to spring this one on me.
And buddy. This show got me. It's got everything I love in a show, in a children's show (I love children's media that isn't just mindless entertainment, and there is a particular type that just does it for me) and it's the sort of thing that is just beautiful as it's written and also really needs no explaining. It reminds me of Bantam Star Wars (it's best era), and that sort of unique blend of magic and mystery and family and despair and hope and love and everything in between. Aang is just so Luke, with his love that is greater than the world and also for the world, with the breathless way he uses his power but with so much thought and care. With the family that they build, with the truly excellent writing. I could go on at length, and probably will in later posts on in later drafts, but this show. This fucking show man.
And then, of course, bc he can never leave well enough alone, he tells me about his ship. The ship. And it's a rarepair, which is insane because I NEVER ship rarepairs, both because rarepairs are usually silly, often more infuriating than not, and so limited that the full scope of fangirling and obsession is hard to fully realize. But like, it's fucking perfect and I'm handling it about as well as you'd expect lol. (It's Zuko/Toph, because of course I would fucking fall in love with that pairing.) Anyway, expect Avatar span for at least the next two weeks until work starts again (or even more if I'm stressed enough to need an escape lol).

I know that it's a lot to ask but can you please explain inner Ultramarines dynamics/friendships? All I know is that Ventris and Pasanius are bffs, Calgar and Tigurius are close, Sicarius and Ventris hate each other and Decimus Felix is kinda lonely without Guilliman
This is such a great ask! And if you know that, you know a lot already.!
The thing is, all Ultramarines are kind of bitchy against each other, but they still have each other's back. Ventris is kind of clueless about this and gets sad for real :( He really needs to learn that gossip is how an Ultramarine shows affection.
The King of the bitchiness is Torias Telion, who treats all of them like they are his kids (since he trained pretty much all of them), but he loves them and they love him back very much. Its a kind of tough love.
It is kind of hard to find a lot of interpersonal relationships in canon because usually the book focus on one main character and putting too many heroes in one book makes them compete for attention. So if we want to imagine how they treat each other we have to look at fanon (and boy do I have a lot of that).

Rpg Anon: I've been a bit relatively moody lately and that's why I haven't done the class 77 Personas research lately. I still intend on doing it but still. Regardless, mod, if you have the time, what Personas do you imagine Makoto's class to have?
We already established Sayaka to have Miss Crane/The Crane Wife and Sakura to have Hercules but any thoughts you have of everyone else? Class 78 so far has the themes of their Personas not particularly being gods but more characters of popular stories and folklore.
P.s. if you want to give Kyoko Sherlock Holmes than you're gonna have to justify it cuz that's a bit too easy and direct.
//Hey, so I'm really sorry I got late to this. I'm sorry you've had some rough days and I apologize for not getting to this sooner.
//And then when I tried to do it last night, my internet provider went down right in the middle of it, so that pissed me off as you might imagine.
//It just took me a while to think about it, but I do think I've got some answers. Note that I'm not completely sure about all of them, I decided a lot of these based on the theme of, as you said, popular stories and characters from folklore.
//I'll try my best to explain each one.
Makoto - Antar: Antarah ibn Shaddad al-Absi, also known as Antar, was a pre-Islamic African-Arab knight and poet, famous for both his poetry and his adventurous life. I'm very wishy-washy on this one, but ultimately I focused on the fact that he started out as a slave before he became a knight, channeling his hopes and dreams to reach where he got to.
Sayaka - The Crane Wife: For reasons we have already established. However, I do wish it had a better, or more official name.
Junko - Nyarlathotep: A fictional character created by H. P. Lovecraft. The character is a malign deity in the Cthulhu Mythos, a shared universe. First appearing in Lovecraft's 1920 prose poem "Nyarlathotep", he was later mentioned in other works by Lovecraft and by other writers. He is also the main antagonist of Persona 1 and 2, and was picked for reasons already established.
Hina - Maximus: Maximus Decimus Meridius was the commander of the Armies of the North and the Felix Legions under the Roman Empire. The greatest general of Rome during the 2nd century AD, he served loyally under Emperor Marcus Aurelius during his Twelve Year Campaign against the Germanic tribes at Vindobona in Germania. I picked this one because he's also the main character of the film Gladiator, a film about warrior sports, which fits Hina's sport related talent, her competitive nature, and her determination to see things through to the end. That said, this is by far the one I am the most unsure of, and wouldn't mind a second opinion.
Chihiro - Mulan: A legendary folk heroine from the Northern and Southern dynasties era of Chinese history. According to legend, Mulan took her aged father's place in the conscription for the army by disguising herself as a man. While I do think there could be alternatives, I ultimate focused on the similarity between Mulan and Chihiro's stories, where they disguise themselves as the opposite gender. Mulan does so to protect others while Chihiro did to protect himself, but ultimate came into his own to embrace his identity.
Sakura - Hercules: For reasons established. The strongest man in history serving as the Persona of the strongest woman in the world.
Toko - Maleficent: In PToH Toko obviously has Barrow, but that's more to fit with Komaru and them being a duo. In an alternative world, this Persona is based on a fictional character who appears as the main antagonist in Walt Disney Productions' 16th animated feature film, Sleeping Beauty (1959). She is represented as an evil fairy and the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil" who, after not being invited to a christening, curses the infant Princess Aurora to "prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die" before the sun sets on Aurora's sixteenth birthday. However, more recent iterations of her character, such as her 2014 standalone movie puts the character into a much different light, revealing that she was once a kind-hearted fairy, who is deceived by the love of her life, Stefan; Aurora's father, and she places a curse on her in order to exact revenge. This is similar to how Toko spent a lot of her young childhood being kicked down, manipulated, hurt and betrayed by everyone, which led to the birth of her vengeful and psychotic alter ego, Genocide Jack.
Celeste - Jeanne d'Arc: A patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orléans and her insistence on the coronation of Charles VII of France during the Hundred Years' War. Claiming to be acting under divine guidance, she became a military leader who transcended gender roles and gained recognition as a savior of France. Celeste (at least in the dub) poses as a French girl for the majority of her time in the game, and has a very similar empowaring, intellectual, yet also spiteful nature to Jeanne d'Arc.
Hifumi - Māui: A great culture hero and trickster in Polynesian mythology. Tales of Māui's exploits and adventures are told throughout most of Polynesia; they can be traced back as far west as islands off New Guinea. Some exploits common to most Polynesian traditions are stealing fire for humans from the underworld, fishing up islands with his magical hook, and capturing the Sun to lengthen the days. He's the kind of hero and righteous person Hifumi aspires to be, though the demigod is also a trickster, which can hint to how he can be sinister when he needs to be. Honestly not totally sure about this one either though, I'm just spitting.
Kyoko - Robin Hood: No, I didn't go for Sherlock, as obvious as it is. A famous English outlaw usually associated with the motto "Steal from the rich, give to the poor". According to legend, he was a highly skilled archer and swordsman. Robin Hood is also the initial Persona of Goro Akechi from Persona 5, who is also a detective. Though Robin Hood is a fake Persona used to mask Akechi's true sinister nature, Kyoko has no such sinister nature, and her sense of justice and nature of finding the truth and exposing the corruption, despair and lies, is genuine, and this Persona makes sense. Plus, I kind of really want to see a female version of Persona's Robin Hood, since I love it's design.
Mondo - Leonidas: a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, and the 17th of the Agiad line, a dynasty which claimed descent from the mythical demigod Heracles. Leonidas entered myth as a hero and the leader of the 300 Spartans. The 300 Spartans and their successes served as my main reason to give this to Mondo, as they're a very similar concept to the Crazy Diamond Biker Gang that he leads.
Taka - Odysseus: In Greek and Roman mythology Odysseus is a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey. He was also the original creator of the infamous Trojan Horse. I picked this because it relates to Taka's desire to be a leader, a public figure, a hero, and someone people can depend on.
Byakuya - Arthur: Legendary British warlord/king said to have united the Britons against the Germanic invaders, with the support of the Knights of Camelot. He is also the protagonist of a folk tale where he pulls a sword from a stone, which decides his fate to be the newest English king. This is primarily why I picked this, as whether it was through fate or effort, Byakuya views himself as a chosen one, and that he earned the right to stand above everybody.
Leon - Siegfried: The legendary dragon-slaying hero in Nibelungenlied from German mythology. Both characters share the trait of being heroic figures who have accomplished greatness, but died as a result of their own misgivings as opposed to in battle or elsewhere better. Honestly, this one is a stretch though, so I wouldn't mind a second opinion.
Mukuro - Yog-Sothoth: A fictional cosmic entity and Outer God created by H. P. Lovecraft. He, like Nyarlathotep, Junko's Persona, is a core part of the Cthulhu Mythos (which Lovecraft would refer to facetiously as "Yog-Sothothery"). Born of the Nameless Mist, he is the progenitor of Cthulhu, Hastur the Unspeakable, and the ancestor of the Voormi. Though not siblings, both Nyarlathotep and Yog-Sothoth are offsprings of Azathoth, creating a familial connection between Junko and Mukuro's Persona's, but still having Junko be the more superior of the two.
Hiro - Twm Siôn Cati: a figure in Welsh folklore, known for being robber and trickster, nicknamed the Welsh Wizard. The character has many tall tales, and the Welsh Wizard title is in reference to both Hiro's scamming money-grubbing nature, his susceptibility to fall for traps and misadventures, and his talent of a fortune teller, which is mystical in it's own way.
//Again, a lot of these need work, I'm really unsure about most of them, but I am equally as proud of some of them.
-Mod
