I was fortunate to attend @elizabethkoz workshop related to her research "Textile and priviledge: Decolonizing institutional spaces and practices". It was a hands-on/craft making/conversations session to explore mementos. This is my unfinished piece, UNROOTED/INVISIBLE, a material representation on the tensions between Western hegemonic design and vernacular textiles from my region. It also represents the tension in mestizo identity, between the visible but unrooted Spanish side contrasting with the invisible but grounded Indigenous side. This is a scale model of a larger piece I want to make. Thanks you, Elizabeth, for creating a safe space for sharing and making. #Decolonizing #Craft #Design #Art #Identity #Mestiza #Indigenous #Textiles #Mexico #NewZealand #Aotearoa #Chiapas #Decolonizingdesign #PhDResearch #PhD #PhDJourney (at AUT Faculty Art and Design) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByXJ1vlDC9_/?igshid=ta184uq8lume

1. Introducing The People’s Graphic Design Archive! 2. A virtual archive built by everyone, about everyone, for everyone. 3. Image: Poster for “Anatomy of the Black Aesthetic: An Examination. Nikki Giovanni—Poet + Critic.”  Black and white, boldly hand lettered poster. Designer unknown.1969. 4. It’s a grassroots archive, and everyone is invited to contribute! It’s crowdsourced! 5. The Archive aims to: > Expand graphic design history to uncover and include the works and histories of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, women, and other historically marginalized designers and allied professionals. > Expand the canon beyond schools of design that are historically privileged and homogenizing. > Expand the definition of graphic design. > Preserve works that weren’t previously considered worthwhile. > Encourage The People to determine and save our collective history! 6. Image: Cover of “Now Time, No. 3” magazine. Blue illustration of woman astronaut, Sally Ride, with logotype over her face. Design by Reverb Studio. 1993. 7. Why this archive now? The Archive has been in the works since 2016. During this time, we’ve been looking for funds and partners to build the platform. In the wake of the murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and an overdue reckoning with white supremacy, we felt that the time was now to launch this cooperative platform in Notion...at least for the moment. 8. What can you do? > Browse—the archive. > Upload—your  design treasures! > Write—for the blog! > Share—your finds! 9. Image: Bubbles campaign. Stills of a groovy 1975 TV commercial for 7up illustrated with lights on a night sky. Type and line art with dancing women wearing fairy wings. Design by Robert Abel and the Associates (RA&A), 1975. 10. Head over to PeoplesGDArchvie.org where you can get more info and join the community! . . . . . . #GraphicDesign #DesignHistory #DecolonizingDesign #Archive #GraphicDesignArchive #ExpandingDesignHistory #ExpandingTheCanon #ArchivesOfOurOwn https://www.instagram.com/p/CCcF7GOBFBS/?igshid=whu8xjm7swyb
