In the 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan’s entry into Hindi cinema gave birth to the “Angry Young Man.” He was a hero, who fought against the system, who fought against injustice, and became a voice for the subdued people in society. It was one man against the world. Through the 80s, this phenomena continued, but as the new century neared, the romantic hero emerged and the action hero became an afterthought. People either no longer wished to change the system, or they no longer trusted a lone hero to do it. With the birth of a new generation, softer male leads became the norm with Shah Rukh Khan at the height of romantic stardom.

Though Hindi films let go of this concept, South Indian Cinema, continues to celebrate its heroes through films on injustice with a male lead as savior. So it is only natural that Atlee, a South Indian filmmaker, brings back to Hindi cinema the heroic mass entertainer, ironically starring the very actor who had originally taken away the limelight from the “angry young man” of the 70s and 80s. Jawan follows a man who strives for justice, who wishes to correct a system which favors those who are guilty over the many innocents, and for that, he resorts to vigilantism putting him in the crossfire of both the police and an evil arms dealer.

I did not have great expectations from Atlee. Though his films are entertaining, they have never risen to greatness, barring Raja Rani, which is the best of his work. However, he has great mass appeal and Jawan promises the same.The plot is intricately woven with an amalgamation of elements that tackle many relevant issues in society today. From farmer suicides to hospital inadequacies, by blending real stories into a fictional universe, writer-director Atlee appeals to the struggles of the common man and attempts to raise awareness regarding the flaws in the system that governs Indian society. Alongside important themes, the film’s strength lies in its strongly choreographed action sequences with women at the forefront. Shah Rukh Khan as the man of many names is the hero, but he is surrounded by powerful women fighting for themselves and for others. It is exciting, entertaining, and visually captivating with a thoroughly ‘massy’ feel.

However, my biggest issue with Jawan is the same problem I’ve had with Atlee films in the past, particularly Mersal and Bigil. They’re all over the place. The shift between present and past, the placement of flashbacks, too many characters, too many plot points, everything is a disjointed mess. There isn’t a singular arc keeping the story moving. In an attempt to create suspense, using non-linear storytelling, the makers sacrifice emotions. We begin to connect with a character, or get interested in a certain plot point, but a sudden shift in the story, leaves us hanging. By the time it returns, our emotions no longer remain the same.

Nevertheless, it is entertaining and much credit for that goes to the performances. Every single actor in the cast does a tremendous job: the army of six girls (Lehar Khan, Sanjeeta Bhattarchaya, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Girja Oak, Aaliyah Qureishi), Deepika Padukone in a cameo appearance, Seeza Saroj Mehta as the little girl Suji, Sunil Grover, Ridhi Dogra, Eijaz Khan, and even all those in small bit roles. As for the central trio, anything I say in their praise would be less. Nayanthara is enigmatic and powerful as the law-abiding officer in search of who she believes to be a problematic vigilante. I am glad her stardom is finally extending beyond the borders of the south. Though Vijay Sethupathi has already made his mark on the Hindi audience through Farzi, it is through Jawan his versatility comes forth. I have seen so many actors struggle outside their comfort language, but he doesn’t let his difficulty with Hindi get in the way of his menacing performance. And last but not the least, is the star of the show, Shah Rukh Khan. Comedy, romance, drama, action, there is no genre in which he lacks and Jawan touches upon it all. Such a strong, versatile range of emotions is displayed through one character. This film is a reminder that Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom and aura are unmatched.

Jawan is not perfect, it is not without its flaws. But its entertaining nature, the larger-than-life characters, and Shah Rukh Khan’s explosive comeback make it a worthwhile watch.

BIOGRAPHY

Deepti was born in a loving family back in busy Dehli. Her father Zahir, took over the reins of his family restaurant that he ran with his wife, Jiya. Her parents were barely in their twenties when Deepti was born, bringing much joy and happiness to their family, which only grew from that point. Deepti is able to say she counts four siblings, which made for a crowded and very crowded household. In Dehli, Deepti remembers having been the most happy. Looking back fondly to the festivals, the temples she visited with her family. The community and way of life was one she thought she would never have to miss. But when she was sixteen, Deepti’s parents decided to move out of the country for political reasons, and she had to say goodbye to her dear Dehli.

They settled down in Providence Peak, Colorado. A place that barely resembled her old neighbourhood, her own home. Her father had made enough with his restaurant that they were able to settle in a house large enough for the seven of them, even starting a new restaurant within the town’s center: the House of Dehlicasies, a name chosen by her brother who always did love a good pun. Having to finish ‘high school’ in the USA was strange to say the least, and after discussion between her parents and the school she, along with her other siblings, would have to redo a whole year to acclimatize to their new surroundings. Deepti didn’t mind, feeling rather overwhelmed by everything and everyone. Having to survive in the American system definitely hardened Deepti, who along with her siblings were often the target for bullying due to their accents, the fact they had their father’s homemade cooking to school and the fact they weren’t as sharp to American customs and sayings as their peers were. Going to college, Deepti definitely adjusted, standing her ground and not letting anything drag her down. She didn’t have a lot of friends but the few she did create are ones to last a lifetime.

Deepti graduated college in a degree for business and management, always having been great with schedules and numbers. She worked for numerous of companies through her life; ranging from law firms to an accountant firm and even for the government at some point, which is where she met Lewis Negan, a gallant officer in the U.S. Army who swept Deepti off her feet. Out of the flings and short relationships she had, she never pictured herself to be able to fall as hard as this. It didn’t take them long to get engaged, getting him as far as to want to settle in Providence Peak so she could be close with her family, which was a good call.

Her mother began to forget things, and not in a way where she couldn’t find her keys or mixed up the names of her children, but important chunks of information. When the twitching in her hand started, Zahir took her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. This being an inherited disorder, Zahir and Jiya brought their children up to speed as soon as possible, leaving it to each of them to get tested or not. Deepti decided to do so, and was faced with the horrible truth that she was indeed a carrier of the mutation, meaning that she would start showing symptoms between 35 and 55 years old. Being thirty-four, Deepti felt her clock had begun to ran out at a rapid pace. She hoped for the support of her Lewis, but not being able to deal with the idea of having to take care of his wife at an early age, Lewis decided to end their engagement and left Providence Peak.

For the last year, Deepti has put her energy into renovating her home that she now inhabits alone. She’s also quit her job so that she can help her father run the restaurant and is working there fulltime so he can spend time with his wife. Deepti has definitely become bitter about the newfound information of her health and the inevitable ending of her life. Why make memories when in the end she will forget them after after all? With her 35th birthday coming closer, Deepti definitely feels like she is spiraling.

chloe was born in sydney, australia to loving parents, and her childhood was enriched by her father's captivating tales of history and adventure. although her father's affection for her was unquestionable, his presence in her life suggested otherwise. his interest in archaeology evolved from a humble occupation into an all-consuming obsession. eventually, the frazer family relocated from australia to her mother's homeland, india.

the transition proved challenging for chloe. she went from attending public school to an all-girls convent school, struggling to find her place among her peers. ostracized due to her foreign status and missing her father more than ever, chloe and her mother decided to part ways with the frazer patriarch and return to australia. little did chloe know that this would be the last time she would see her father, leaving behind a tarnished legacy as a disgraced archaeologist and a golden ganesh statue for his only daughter.

eris, the greek goddess representing strife, discord, rivalry, and chaos, is hardly a name chloe considers a compliment; rather, it seems more like an insult. her codename reflects her relationship with the professor and libertalia, rather than encapsulating her true personality. chloe finds the notion of codenames frivolous and much prefers using her own name and addressing others by theirs.

002. gaining an invitation into libertalia isn’t an easy feat. what do you think made you special enough to get handpicked by the professor?

being a highly accomplished treasure hunter and a “thief for hire,“ it would be unwise for the professor to disregard chloe's skills. their paths crossed during chloe's mission to locate marco polo's fleet. it's worth noting that chloe doesn't hold the libertalia or the professor in high regard; it's the promise of avery's treasure that motivates her. she continues to operate independently outside of what libertalia has to offer.

003. the captain’s crew is the highest position at libertalia. do you desire to graduate to this level? if you’re already a member of the captain’s crew what motivated you to change your position?

chloe has come to terms with the fact that she may never become a member of the captain's crew, though she isn't opposed to the idea. she tends to be somewhat of a control freak and dislikes taking orders.

004. although many members of libertalia don’t know each other’s personal lives, it’s rumored that many members came from suspicious backgrounds. who were you before joining and what was your life like prior?

chloe has never known a life outside of treasure hunting and thievery. living a dual life would be challenging for her, as she's always on the move and avoids staying in one place for too long. with no family, friends, or romantic ties to anchor her, she is as free as the wind.

005. what was your primary motivation for joining libertalia? was it for the riches or for the thrill of adventure? or is there something else motivating you to continue working for the group? what do you hope to achieve?

what keeps chloe interested in libertalia is the abundance of resources it offers and the protection the professor provides to shield her from potential arrests.

006. how would the other members describe you? would you consider yourself to be a team-player or do you prefer to work independently?

annoying, a nuisance. and causes more harm than good. chloe's self-serving but in tender moments she's someone you can rely on.

007. libertalia is anonymous, therefore necessitates secrecy outside of the group. how do you balance your personal life outside of this, granted you have one? is there a clear separation between libertalia and your personal life?

008. henry avery’s treasure has been lost since 1695. even with the brightest minds on the case, all leads to find the treasure haven’t turned up. avery’s treasure is the professor’s white whale and after several years of searching, many believe the treasure ceases to exist. do you believe the treasure exists?

at some point she moved back to los angeles in an attempt to put her life together. but because she was under the iron fist of her mother for so long it was difficult for her to remain steady on her two feet. even into her thirties shanti is struggling to find her significance in this world, without her family legacy lingering behind her.
