Campaign to Save Marcel Breuer's Summer Home on Cape Cod

According to a recent post on Dezeen.com, "The Cape Cod Modern House Trust has launched a campaign to raise [funds] to purchase modernist architect, Marcel Breuer's holiday home in Cape Cod." The house is currently owned by the architect's son Tomas Breuer, and is in disrepair. The Trust hopes to save the building from demolition.

The post also says, "The home contains almost all its original furniture including one-of-a-kind tables, couches and hand-woven rugs designed for the house. It also contains...numerous artworks designed by Bauhaus alumni Paul Klee, Josef Albers, and Herbert Bayer."

The Trust's goal is to raise 1.2 million dollars to purchase the home, and Cape Cod Modern House Trust founding director Peter McMahon told Dezeen that the organization has been approved for a mortgage for the remainder of Tomas Breuer's asking price of two million dollars.

Marcel Breuer's iconic Geller House in Lawrence, Long Island was demolished in January 2022.

IRIS VAN HERPEN

Iris Van Herpen is well known for her technology-focused fashion, any number of her amazing designs could be used to show her incredible ability with 3D printing and creativity.  Her most recent, 2017 collection focused on the gaps and sections between the materials making up garments made from Mylar fabric, which has been laser cut to create rippling patterns that expand and contract with the body's movements. The collection also features two 3D printed dresses named Magma, which were are made by combining flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) printing with polyamide printing to form a fine web.  Iris Van Herpen has continually collaborated with Wearable Stratasys, a leading manufacturer of 3D printers and production systems for prototyping and manufacturing and Materialise, a Belgian-based pioneer in Additive Manufacturing software and solutions. “The incredible possibilities afforded by these new technologies allowed us to reinterpret the tradition of couture as “tech-couture” where delicate hand-made embroidery and needlework is replaced by code.” Van Herpen has been quoted saying to Deezeen, “I feel it’s important that fashion can be about much more than consumerism, but also about new beginnings and self-expression, so my work very much comes from abstract ideas and using new techniques, not the re-invention of old ideas. I find the process of 3D printing fascinating because I believe it will only be a matter of time before we see the clothing we wear today produced with this technology, and it’s because it’s such a different way of manufacturing, adding layer-by-layer, it will be a great source of inspiration for new ideas.” 

Back in 2011 TIME Magazine named Iris van Herpen’s 3D printed dress one of the 50 Best Inventions of the year 2011, speaking then that she was excited about how 3D printing could possibly fill up the gap between Haute Couture and the mass produced and limited sizing within Ready-to-Wear. “People have been wearing the wrong sizes of clothes for far to long. Everybody could have their owns body scanned and just order clothes that fit perfectly.” she explains in an Interview with Dezeen Magazine. If this would become reality 3D scanners and printers could revolutionise the way we order out clothes in the future. Not only would this revolutionise fashion for the consumer but also for the manufacturer. 3D technology and lazer cutting is adding a whole new dimension to the fashion industry and Van Herpen’s collections usually contain two or more pieces that incorporate both in an exceptionally skilled manner. Every single one of her collections is creative and inspiring, and just imaging the sheer possibilities of what could come as technology continues to advance is truly breathtaking, and with each collection from her, we see a little bit further into the future.
