Orkut , the recently-launched, Google-affiliated FOAF (Cory critiques them -- and the bigger FOAF picture -- here), is offline for a while.  Before the temporary beta outage, Warren Ellis logged on, sniffed around, then said:

Right now, it looks pretty much like an iteration of the Tribe.net system, with an eye on Friendster's apparent main function as a dating system. (Which means, oddly, it requests your business profile at the same time as it's asking you where you like to be fingered.) (...) It's faster than Fuckster and Tribe, but it shows that all these friend-of-a-friend things have really hit a wall. I mean, what can you actually do aside from invite all your friends and piss about on a couple of small message boards? Message boards that, unlike Tribe, allow anonymous postings and therefore devalue the message board experience? What happens after that? After you've gotten all your friends in -- whom you send email to or IM regularly in any case, presumably. That's it. All done. Until, I guess, yet another social network system opens and you start all over again.

These things want to be a hub for your Internet community experience, but they're just not necessary enough. Tribe gets closest, but it's nothing you're going to leave as an open window on your desktop all day. The first new social network system that builds an IM program into its structure may have a shot. The Delphiforums message boards have Jabber tacked on to them, which would have been brilliant when Delphi was at its height, but has gone pretty much unnoticed in the wake of their self-mutilating half-smart attempts to monetise. The idea was and is sound. The minute you make these things the easiest and most direct way to communicate with the personal network the system's let you build or collate, there's going to be a reason to keep the site on your desktop. And that has to be their goal. I mean, who builds a social network system that doesn't want people to use it all the time?

I got through most of my "raving batshit angry" activities before Tumblr existed. Most of it, before Livejournal existed.

The evidence is buried in long-dead Yahoogroups (some of which may be archived somewhere, but would be hard to find) and in pagan groups at DelphiForums - which now limit free accounts only searching the most recent 3 month's posts, so. You'll never find me.

But mostly: I'm not young and so few of these arguments are new. I don't angry at most of them, just disappointed and sad. I know how they go; I know how many of the people currently arguing are going to change their mind in 5-10 years and be ashamed they ever said anything like that.

I'm watching for the ones who are still trying to make up their minds, wading through a barrage of angry back-and-forth posts, trying to figure out who and what they can trust.

And I don't mean "they should trust me," but "they should know how to decide" - they should be able to pick apart both the arguments from The Other Side and the ones they agree with, and understand what's behind the various claims of "this is right" or "this is stupid" or "this is a scam."

If they're gonna agree with posts that say "this is immoral," they should know why they think it's immoral and what should be done about it. Immoral behavior has never gone away because some stranger said, "You there! That thing you're doing, it's terrible and you need to stop!"

Are yall who read and comment this blog this normal and calm on your own blogs too??? Cause you talk all so succinctly and collected here with all the argument but don't you ever go mad and just get batshit angry in your fandom?

Delphi Forum: Εξουσία και ΜΜΕ

Το Σάββατο που μας πέρασε έλαβα μέρος στο Delphi Economic Forum, στην ενότητα με τίτλο «PROTECTING THE FOURTH ESTATE: DEMOCRACY, ACCOUNTABILITY AND THE MEDIA».

Το πάνελ είχε ικανό αριθμό ομιλητών από τους οποίους και αρκετοί πολιτικοί. Έβγαλε και είδηση για την ΕΡΤ - ψάξτε την στο web, θα την βρείτε.

Ειπώθηκαν όμως κι άλλα.

Η κυρία Γιαννάκου μας είπε οτι τα μέσα είναι ανεύθυνα. Α, επίσης ευθύνονται και ��ι αναγνώστες από τους οποίους απουσιάζει η κριτική σκέψη.

Ο κύριος Μορώνης, αντιπρόεδρος του ΕΣΡ, της ανεξάρτητης αρχής με ρόλο κομβικό στα ΜΜΕ -επί τη ευκαιρία ρίξτε μια ματιά στη vintage 2004 ιστοσελίδα του- μας εξήγησε οτι το πρόβλημα του τύπου οφείλεται στο κεφάλαιο. Δυστυχώς δεν ανέπτυξε πλήρως τη σκέψη του σχετικά με τα μέσα παραγωγής και την αλλοτρίωση του δημοσιογράφου ή εγώ δεν την έπιασα. 

Ο κύριος Ξυδάκης, κυβερνητικός εκπρόσωπος και πρώην δημοσιογράφος δήλωσε οτι για την οικτρή κατάσταση στα Μέσα φταίνε τα λάιφσταιλ περιοδικά των eighties και το youtube που έχει διεισδύσει παντού στην θέση της πρωτογενούς δημοσιογραφικής έρευνας.

Τέλος ο κύριος Ρουσόπουλος μας χάρισε, η αλήθεια είναι, μια εξαιρετική ιστορική αναδρομή του τύπου από τον 16ο αιώνα και παλιότερα, αλλά και από την δική του περίοδο ως υπουργός επικρατείας.

Έτσι, από εκδήλωση για την προστασία των ΜΜΕ η ατζέντα άλλαξε κι έγινε η Προστασία του υποδειγματικού Κράτους (και των εκπροσώπων του) από τα προβληματικά ΜΜΕ. Βέβαια ένας άσχετος από πολιτική/ους θα φανταζόταν πως η εξουσία δεν χρειάζεται προστασία. Προστασία χρειάζεται ο ασθενέστερος. Μιας και η εξουσία είναι εξ’ ορισμού ο ισχυρός (ακριβώς για αυτό ελέγχεται από τα Μέσα), τα συμπεράσματα στα οποία είχαν καταλήξει ο καθείς από τους προλαλήσαντες ήταν κάπου αλλού.

Εγώ τώρα βρίσκομαι και τα ακούω όλα αυτά καθώς αναρωτιέμαι τι να πω με τη σειρά μου και, καθώς περνούσε η ώρα, άρχισα να σκέφτομαι τι νόημα έχει αυτό που κάνουμε και γιατί ασχολούμαστε και γιατί δεν πάμε όλοι σε μία τρύπα να κρυφτούμε.

Ευτυχώς εκεί κάπου πήρε τον λόγο ο κύριος Τσάλτας, εκπρόσωπος της New York Times, και άρχισε να μιλά για την μάχη που δίνει και κερδίζει στα μέτωπα της ποιότητας και της αναγνωσιμότητας, εν μέσω social network bubbles, post truth, Trump, και του υπόλοιπου -νοσηρού- περιβάλλοντος.

Και λέω: εδώ σε βάζει στο στόχαστρό του ο POTUS και τον κοιτάς στα μάτια αγέρωχος (και χώνεις και πέντε εκατομμύρια παραπάνω ενώ ταυτόχρονα μαζεύεις ακόμα περισσότερες συνδρομές), θα μας κόψει την φόρα ο τοπικισμός, η ημιμάθεια, η έπαρση και η φιλοδοξία; Υπάρχουν πολλά που μπορούν να γίνουν και γίνονται σε όλον τον κόσμο για να εξασφαλίσουν μέσα ενημέρωσης υγιή ώστε να τα φοβάται η εξουσία! Το inside story  αυτό επιχειρεί φέρνοντας στο προσκήνιο τον αναγνώστη και δίνοντάς του τον χρόνο να καταλάβει τι και γιατί συμβαίνει. Δίνοντας τον χώρο στον δημοσιογράφο να αναπτύξει ολοκληρωμένα, χωρίς δεσμεύσεις, το θέμα του.

Έχω επίγνωση πως οι δημοσιογράφοι έχουν πολύ δρόμο να διανύσουν για να ανακτήσουν την εμπιστοσύνη των πολιτών. Το ίδιο και οι πολιτικοί. Τουλάχιστον όμως ξέρουμε πως υπάρχουν δημοσιογράφοι που το επιζητούν, και το αποδεικνύουν με την εξαιρετική δουλειά τους μέσω της οποίας κρίνονται καθημερινά. Όσο για τους πολιτικούς, αυτοί έχουν τους δικούς τους μπελάδες, δεν ξέρω ποιοί από αυτούς μπορούν να ανταποκριθούν.

Για να γίνει παραδειγματικά ξεκάθαρο το πρόβλημα, τρία λεπτά πριν τη λήξη της εκδήλωσης, ο κύριος Ξυδάκης θέλησε να επαυξήσει την πολεμική του επαναλαμβάνοντας τα περί λαιφσταιλ και γιουτουμπ κάνοντας χρήση εκφράσεων πιο ταιριαστών για ένα κοινό (το κοινό του;) που  προφανώς εκείνος θεωρεί οτι γνωρίζει μόνο από click-bait.

Έτσι, θριαμβευτικά, αναχώρησε ενώ εγώ, παρατηρώντας την μεθόδευση και την έκπληξη του κοινού που μας παρακολουθούσε, βγήκα από το πάνελ με ακόμα μεγαλύτερο πάθος και πείσμα για αυτό που κάνουμε. Σίγουρα υπάρχουν αρκετοί που δεν τσιμπάνε το δόλωμα, αντιλαμβάνονται τι διακυβεύεται. Και όσο εγχειρήματα σαν το inside story βγαίνουν και δείχνουν πως υπάρχει κάτι άλλο, τόσο περισσότεροι θα γίνονται.

Έξι παρεμβάσεις σε οικονομία και κοινωνία

Το στίγμα των επόμενων κινήσεων της κυβέρνησης για την ενίσχυση της κοινωνίας και της οικονομίας, έδωσε ο υπουργός Οικονομικών Χρήστος Σταϊκούρας.

Μιλώντας σε πάνελ του Οικονομικού Φόρουμ των Δελφών, ο κ. Σταϊκούρας τόνισε πως η στροφή του παραγωγικού μοντέλου της χώρας πρέπει να στηρίζεται στην ποιότητα. Προτεραιότητα, πρόσθεσε, αποτελεί και η κάλυψη του επενδυτικού «κενού» που προϋπήρχε της πανδημίας, σε συνδυασμό με την προστασία της κοινωνικής συνοχής.

Προσδιορίζοντας τις παρεμβάσεις σε οικονομία και κοινωνία τόνισε ότι αφορούν:

-Μείωση φόρων και ειδικά των ασφαλιστικών εισφορών

-Νέο Πτωχευτικό Κώδικα για τη διευθέτηση του ιδιωτικού χρέους

-Εφαρμογή του πλάνου των ιδιωτικοποιήσεων, που παρά την κρίση της πανδημίας, συνεχίστηκε η υλοποίησή του (ΔΕΠΑ, Μαρίνα Αλίμου κ.ά.)

-Συνέχιση του ψηφιακού μετασχηματισμού του Δημοσίου

-Συνεχή εφαρμογή της μεταρρυθμιστικής ατζέντας και των διαρθρωτικών μεταρρυθμίσεων (ληξιπρόθεσμα Δημοσίου κ.λπ.)

-«Πράσινες επενδύσεις».

Ο υπουργός Οικονομικών, δεν προσδιόρισε το ύψος της ύφεσης για εφέτος, δήλωσε, ωστόσο, ότι τα στοιχεία του α’ 3μήνου για το ΑΕΠ εμφανίζουν πολύ μικρότερη ζημία σε σχέση με την υπόλοιπη ευρωζώνη, ενώ και το οικονομικό κλίμα δείχνει σαφώς λιγότερο επηρεασμένο.

Αναφερόμενος στην επιτυχημένη έκδοση του 10ετούς ομολόγου και στη θετική Έκθεση Αξιολόγησης από τους ευρωπαϊκούς θεσμούς, σημείωσε ότι όλα αυτά καταδεικνύουν πως η χώρα κινείται στη σωστή κατεύθυνση.

Ενώ, όσον αφορά στα μέτρα στήριξης της οικονομίας, το ύψος τους υπολογίζεται επί του παρόντος σε 24 δισ. ευρώ, αλλά, εάν απαιτηθεί και το επιτρέπουν οι δημοσιονομικές- ταμειακές αντοχές, το κόστος μπορεί να αυξηθεί.

Τέλος, σχετικά με ο «Ταμείο Ανάκαμψης», ο υπουργός εκτίμησε πως τα κονδύλια θα είναι διαθέσιμα στο α’ 3μηνο του επόμενου έτους.

I miss the community on LJ in 2005. The one that died in 2007 during Strikethrough.

Because that was the point when thousands of fans in a loosely connected community realized: they can take it away from us at any time. We're not safe here. We're not safe anywhere.

The fact that the founders had said "Livejournal will never have ads" (a literal quote) didn't matter. Public statements aren't contracts.

LJ of the early 2000's wasn't perfect. There was a lot of drama and screaming and cliques and dogpiling. Parts of it were toxic.

But. (And this is important.) You could build your little sub-community, connected but not close, and dodge the toxicity while still taking part in the conversations.

Platforms since LJ have mostly worked hard to make that nearly impossible.

I miss the feeling of safety I had before Strikethrough. And in the last decade-plus since, I have not figured out how a platform could bring that back. Because that feeling was based on a lie.

(Before LJ: I miss the Pagan corners of Delphiforums. Which, again, lasted until the owners decided free accounts were actually freeloaders, and they reduced the free features and increased the cost of subscription accounts, and those communities dissolved.)

I don’t miss anything, actually, now that I think about it.

Sounds weird to say with all the bitching I do on here and all the “The world is going to hell because of social media” that I reblog.

I think having gotten in before Livejournal is part of it. I think also witnessing the blatant hypocrisy of a lot of people I knew on LJ helps. There were good things in the past, but mostly, there were just different eras and different platforms, some better than others. I had some fandom friends in college, but we didn’t always share fandoms, and I didn’t stay in touch long term. I wrote very sporadically and not stuff I generally enjoyed rereading myself.

What I am supposed to be doing instead of answering this ask is revising my first novel. I’ve finally figured out time management and whatever weirdness my brain has and can write long things I actually like. I have a tight circle of offline fandom friends, and though we don’t usually share fandoms, lately, we’ve all fallen into c-dramas together.

Now is better.

Now is so much better.

I guess... I am sad that if I ever went back to revisit Ranma/Ryoga, most of those websites would be so long dead that I wouldn’t even know what to look up on the wayback machine. But I rarely revisit fandoms, so I’m usually only sad when I get in late and want to read the old fic. There are a few Miami Vice zines I’ll go track down one day if I get back into MV. I preserve fandom history for other people who come after, not for me.

Right this moment, I’ve just finished Word of Honor and am feeling so meh about the ending that I don’t know if I want to make fanworks. I was hoping it would give me feelings like The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty did.

So I guess I always miss that feeling of new and obsessive fandom love whenever I’ve temporarily fallen out of having a fandom of my heart.

Started in the summer of 2002, when Richard Harris--the original...and better, IMNSHO, Albus Dumbledore--was still living, I wrote this trilogy with the events of the 4th book in mind. It first appeared in the "pages" of DelphiForums.

Even though Harris died before I was able to finish the first story (and Writer's Block kept me from finishing the third story until after DH2's release), I kept the vision of his Dumbledore in mind during my version of Harry's Fifth Year at Hogwarts.
