Demicorn / Half-Unicorn

It is often said that a Unicorn will always breed true - that to try to hybridise them with, say a Winged Horse, will not result in the winged-and-horned combination one might expect from mixing those two sets of traits. Thus it is: a Unicorn crossed with anything else will produce either a Unicorn (usually if the mare is a Unicorn) or a specimen of the other equine (usually if that equine is the mare). The closest thing to an exception comes when one crosses, intentionally or otherwise, a Unicorn with a mundane horse. The result is not, by any means, a Unicorn, the lack of magic ensuring that they will never be as powerful, will never be magical enough to sustain the magics that make a Unicorn a Unicorn. However, the result is not exactly an ordinary horse either.

The term for the very unusual creatures that come from the rare breeding of Unicorn to mundane horse is a Demicorn, and they lack most if not all Unicorn traits. They are often graceful, have a tendency to know who to trust and may develop horns as they age, but they have none of the magical speed, beauty, healing capabilities or strength of a Unicorn. Instead they have great size, sleek coats, slightly tufted tails and may on rare occasions develop horns - this is a decided rarity, but as the biological process itself is not wholly magical it is not impossible nor unheard of. Especially magical examples have been used to provide wand cores, being, in effect a weaker Unicorn core, excellent for training wands and toy wands for small children, but due to the rarity of the creatures as-is - sadly, as hybrids, most if not all Demicorns are sterile - they are not commonly seen and are rarely heard of.
