Is Kuron an animal lover?(i can see him being a huge fan of all 'creepy' or 'ugly' animals like snakes or spiders, maybe he sees himself in how ostricied they are for things they cannot control?? someone mentiones sharks as bloodthirsty in a conversation and Kuron goes full 'uhm ACTUALLY lethal sharks attacks are extremely rare and often happen beacuse of the person's recklessnes-')

You are absolutely right, however i do think with certain animals (spiders, wasp etc) he's like "i respect you, i respect from far here, please respect me by staying far way" like he likes them enough but also he rather maintain his distance and appreciate them from far thank you very much!! He does get to have a pet snake because i say so-

Wow, you probably want a one-word answer, but I'm gonna give you a paragraph (or maybe 7).

I feel like Lance would be laughing hysterically and nope out of the situation. Keith would probably scream or punch a wall first or at least have a lil broody moment to panic, but yeah after that he'd try to get out of it. Though, is this before or after the lion switches? Are we assuming that this is an au and the lions never happened? Because after the lion switch, Keith could probably be moved to the same category as Lance. But if it's before the lion switch, Lance would be moved to the same one as Keith/Hunk.

Though, yeah, Lance doesn't have enough self-value to believe that he's the chosen one. I think Keith would say no in a more, 'I don't care about your freaking prophecy, let me be broody and emo in peace.' They're both super insecure.

The one with Shiro made me laugh. It is SO spot on. Poor old man just wants a break. I think if this is after the lion switch/Kuron, then maybe Keith would be the one to jump in and be like, 'Nuh uh, stay away from my brother, if he dies again I am gonna be SO PISSED.'

Pidge... yeah. No explanation needed. There's a reason I'm emotionally attached to her/him/them. This angelic demon child must be protected.

Hunk! Poor Hunk. No, leave him out of this, I can see him giving them the biggest, saddest puppy eyes while he says that. He doesn't want to be the chosen one, I feel like the entire team would jump in and try to prevent that. But because he's a perfect angel, he would accept it to help him team and STOP IT THIS MAKING ME SAD.

Sorry bout that. Let's not talk about Hunk anymore.

Allura would see this as an obligation that she has, as a princess and as the (sort of) head of the Voltron coalition. She means those words completely, and will not let anyone down no matter what because this poor bean has too much pressure on her. The whole show was made to portray her as a serious, regal leader. However, she clearly has a dorky side, and her whole role/character would be so much deeper and engaging if this were a bigger part of her personality. 'I will not let you down, and I will be completely serious about it, and you will see the transition from when I was that fun older sister who you can confide in, to the scarred older sister who has seen far too much for one lifetime.'

Can we add Coran in? Because he would be in the same category as Allura, but he would whip out a cape from somewhere and be like, 'Yes! I knew this day would come! I will not let you down!' while twirling his mustache. (Holy crap I just heard his voice in my head crystal clear saying those words. His accent makes it sound so cute!) Coran Coran the Gorgeous Man saves the day! (And he would fulfill the prophecy perfectly, and there would be a giant parade with Coran-balloons and aliens swooning anytime he winks in their direction.)

So, yes. I agree with you.

How Sumikko Gurashi does literally everything, especially clone arcs, better than Voltron

Clones. Found family/friendship. Character arc resolution.

I was watching the two SumikkoGurashi movies the past few days and I love it so much. It's made by the creators of Hello Kitty, and is almost saccharine at times, but never tips too far over the line (IMO). And it manages to deal with some surprisingly beautiful themes- better, in fact, than Voltron ever did.

So I'm going to write a quick analysis noting how it did clone arcs so much better. (If there's interest, I might make a post about the found family and character arcs too, in a different post!) @kari-izumi, @synergetic-prose, @as-thou-will, @bbtreee, @backupblogforjg, and @puppetmaster55, I'm tagging you since I know you love VLD criticism.

So first: what is Sumikko Gurashi? Like I mentioned, it's an IP made by the creators of Hello Kitty, about the adventures of various characters who live in the same village, and they all love to spend time alone in a little corner of one of their houses (Sumikko Gurashi means "life in the corner"). There's Shirokuma, a polar bear who ran away from the North Pole because he was scared of the cold; Neko, a timid cat who is self-conscious about her weight; Penguin? who spells his name with a question mark because he's not sure if he is a penguin, and is always reading self-discovery books; Tonkatsu, a fried pork cutlet who was left behind for being too fatty and oily (yes really), and last of all, Tokage, an aquatic dinosaur in disguise who hides his identity to avoid being captured.

(Warning: spoilers for the Sumikko Gurashi movie follow!)

In the first movie, the Sumikkos end up transported into a magic fairy-tale popup book, and each takes on the role of a protagonist; Tokage becomes The Little Mermaid, etc. They meet a little bird, Hiyoko who is trying to find what story he belongs to. The Sumikkos all want to help, especially Penguin? who resonates with Hiyoko not knowing who he is. (Penguin? loves cucumbers and has vague memories of having a plate on his head; the joke is that he actually is or used to be a kappa, a Japanese water demon, but he doesn't know this.) They immediately work to find his story. They think he must be the Ugly Duckling, but Tokage accidentally presses a popup button that releases the real Ugly Duckling, and then they walk into the next page... the last, empty page of the book. Hiyoko isn't a character from any fairy tale at all; he's a child's drawing, drawn with so much love that the magic book brought him to life. He isn't "real", even in the context of the book; he doesn't belong to any story, nor to the real world. He was created, and doesn't have a family or story to call his own.

In other words, he's a clone. Even if he isn't in the strictest definition, Hiyoko fits the narrative role in every way.

Immediately, the Sumikkos offer to bring Hiyoko home with them. They tell him they'll be his friends/family, that he has a home with them. It doesn't matter that he isn't part of a proper story, that he isn't "real". He is a person, with emotions and dreams and a personality, and that is what the Sumikkos care about.

Then the book starts to collapse, and the Sumikkos discover that while they can leave the book, objects created inside the book cannot. That means Hiyoko can't leave with them. Penguin? tries to stay behind, but Hiyoko makes him leave, and the Sumikkos then end up back in their world, crying over the book as they gaze at their lovingly-drawn bird friend.

If this was Voltron, they would have had the characters laugh at the idea of caring about a drawing, or the creators would have snarked about the readers "thinking the drawing mattered" or whatever their wording was to dismiss Kuron. The story would have ended there.

But Sumikko Gurashi flashed forward immediately to the Sumikkos hard at work over their book. Panning out, you see a house and a village surrounding Hiyoko, carefully drawn by the Sumikkos... and last of all, themselves in bird form. So that even if they can never return to the book, they can still keep Hiyoko company in their own forms. The message is clear: sometimes, even if you can't fix a friend's problems, you can always, always make them better, and you can be there, in one form or another- and often, that's all one really wants.

The clone didn't get a perfectly happy ending, but his inability to get the happy ending was portrayed as an absolute tragedy; our hearts were meant to ache for Hiyoko (and Penguin?, who was in despair over his fate). The Sumikkos showing such compassion and love to a "clone" to give him the best life he could have... Voltron would never. They couldn't give Kuron even a quarter as much love and sympathy in their writing.

Sumikko Gurashi, made for little kids (with a large periphery audience of adults, granted), managed to show how a proper clone storyline should be done, without even having an actual clone in the story. That is just how much love and care they put in the stories they tell, compared to... *gestures* Voltron.

I mean, really, everything did clones better than Voltron, but every so often I see something do it that is so far from Voltron in genre, demographic, and so on, that it still astounds me that a sci-fi show managed to utterly break a sci-fi story with its failure to understand basic sci-fi tropes.

“...I was gonna say——you did lose me——several times, at least——temporary. The longest period was the time when I fell into a coma that lasted for two years.”

“Touche mi amor--”

“But that coma doesn't count. You were technically still alive so I still had you, even if barely in my grasp.”

Kuron:

“Touché.”

42. What’s their relationship like with each other’s friends/families?

Kou:

“I’m Kuron's family, and he only has us. The only other person I know he admires is Lord Karlheinz. So I'd say we get along just fine~”

“Now his friends…I DO NOT like his friends. Especially a certain one of them…nosy and annoying is the least of the words I'd use for her. Simply put I'm not too eager to see them still alive.”

Kuron:

“Contentedly harmonious, I cherish and love my new family that Lord Karlheinz had first granted to me and now to reunite with them, is one of the best blessings for a chance of restart in my wretched life.”

“As for friends…I don't think Kou had ever bothered introducing me to any of them, since we don't work in the same company anyway——plus I have my own friends to entertain. I don't mind more added into my choice of contacts though~ I'm pretty adaptably friendly and click almost with everyone that I met, for real~”

43. If they picked out outfits for each other, what would they look like?

Kou:

“I think we've already done that quite a few times haven't we? We even got a photoshoot done for them, and you looked quite the charmer~”

Kuron:

“Uh…which one are you talking about specifically?”

Kou:

“You remember that pink one, the one you wore ~ But I guess you were the one that chose and created it~”

44. Do they cuddle often? Why or why not?

Kou:

“Ohh we definitely cuddle that's for sure~”

Kuron:

“Is that even a serious question? We definitely do more than just that——”

45. How do they support each other? How do they rely on each others support?

Kou:

“I give him all the support I can, my love and effort. My time and energy to make sure he gets what he wants and what he aims for. And if he's down, he gets hugs and love and comfort to settle down, for as long as he needs me, I'll be there.”

Kuron:

”Well…I learnt that being present is the best support for someone, thus I often tried my best to be there for him whenever he performs a challenge or mission and give him the best encouragement I can muster. Be it a performance, trying something new, facing a difficult challenge, I would stay by his side and watch as he strives to succeed——or step out with effort to resolve any small or big problems with him as much as I can contribute so.”

“I…do rely on him for a certain kind of support, I admit that. Sometimes he plays the biggest role of keeping my emotions and mentality under control——since I'm quite an impulsive person——both psychologically and physically. When that happens I simply…rely on his ability on dominating the situation as well as myself then maybe…a couple meek requests for some hugs and kisses…?”

“I mean- We're married so, you tell me if we're serious. Are we serious?” (asking Kuron with a joke tone)

“...As you can see. No absolutely not. We're just casual.” (cold smile innocently)

“Yes and I'm free to hang with whichever hot girls I wish anytime and stay over in different motels every night~——”

“Go to hell.”

47. Do they sleep beside each other? Why or why not?

Kou:

“Of course. We've been staying in the same room and sleeping next to each other ever since we've been together. Oops, spoilers~”

“I just think sleeping next to the person you love is important. Besides, what better way to wake up than next to someone you love?~”

Kuron:

“Ever since the first day moving in with him——yeah.”

“Why? Because I don't think I can sleep beside another or in another bed otherwise. Consider me his warm little blanky that he can't fall asleep peacefully without it.”

“We talk about things like that a lot. Though not as extensively, since we always used to do whatever we desired.”

Kuron:

“...Like adopting a kid or two——sometimes. Since we are immortals that don't age as fast as humans, there's a long way to go till we reach that stage of making changes to our current lifestyle——”

Kou:

“...Uh…Kuron?”

Kuron:

“...I-I mean we do roleplay! Act like vampires and scary horror creatures on stage——or theatre plays once we retired from our idol job——No harm having a new interesting hobby of sorts as fresh retiree homies amiright? AHa ha haa——”

Lance- I have said this before and i'll say it again, Lance as a character is filled with contradictions, and i find it a genuinely interesting thing. However i also know that this was not the writers or eps intentions and entirely me being Insane™. He's also very tragedy coded to me <3. Most favourite blorbo ever, literally creating Situations™ to put him in.

Kuron- My poorest little meow meow. Did not deserve any of That™. I love Shiro but Kuron is much more interesting to me than him. His character had so much potential but with everything in vld it was squashed.

Allura- My sweetheart! My love! I am so sorry! I am so sorry for everything you went through, oh my god! Let her have a Nap! From which she can wake up rested and happy and then let her go to therapy! But seriously the amount of demonization and bashing she has faced, just why? And she has gone through SO MUCH, only to die like THAT!! LIKE!!! I am actually going to lose it!

Willow- the bingo doesnt do justice on how much i love her! Definately the only one in this list whose character arc i am mostly satisfied with. That being said this i do think she should have had more focus and buildup, since she was one of Luz's first friends and part of the og trio, and is just genuinely a good character, and i mostly blame disney for this not happening. I am not That into toh fandom so i wouldnt know any bad takes about her, but the most i have seen is they are mostly chill!

Ok just read the buzzfeed au posts i was missing out 😂 ok now... the reason Lance finds out about Kuron is they go somewhere that actually has a high level demon who isn't scared off right away by Kuron and shit goes down. Kuron must defend his human. Bonus points for hiding inside something small or cute- barbie doll, divok box, stuffed parrot...

Its like this "newly" haunted place that fans request them to go. And leading up to the trip, Kuron is normal, he figures its some low level demon that will clear out the moment he nears. Cause just you don't get a human looking body without being up in the ranks. So he's on his usual train of "secptesim". Until they pull up to the place and he realizes no it's on a similar...maybe slightly higher level as well. He changes his tone real quick.

Because like Kuron has no idea who it is and how they would react. And because of something with shooting an episode, Kuron roll up to scout the place and explain, and be like just be kind of chill I'm just passing through. So there isn't a full on demon fight...or he won't seriously annoy or offend the demon in a spot (save Goatman, cause fuck goatman.)

Kuron's change in attitude has Lance immediately be like "oh film this" cause it's so different. And he is teasing Kuron a lot for being "scared" when he usually isn't. Kuron is just like "we should not fuck around at this place tonight." Knowing it is their only option tor the episode. So he goes in, and is quick to try to see if he can figure out who it is, because maybe it's someone who is a friend/likes him enough just him chill for a night with a human.

But turns at no, it's a demon the just about hated Kuron. And the moment, Lance finishes setting up and ready to start filling the start of the episode, and Kuron finishes telling hin they need to freaking go, all hell breaks loose. Like in a bad way, like there is no was to physically explain anything. Stuff is flying everywhere, meters are going off the hook, the house is shaking, and wind from nowhere is blowing hard. And both Kuron and Lance get thrown. In the middle of it all is a doll/stuff aninmal that Lance was like "aw cute" when they walked in.

The other demon's target is Lance, cause they know Kuron cares for him. Which Kuron is not having, but the other demon keeps separating then or flinging Kuron to the side. Kuron those keeping himself hidden out the window, and let's lose his own hell, and the two fight it out for a good while.

Before Kuron manages to get the uphand and destroyed the other demon's vessel, sending then back to hell. (And not something the other could do to him, because he is physically in the world...not possessing something). And its just a whole thing.

Kuron explains everything to Lance once he is sure he is okay. And they just never air the episode. Telling their company they lost all the footage, or it got crazy corrupted. When really it will just never see the light of day.
