Stockings and Hope
Tumblr media
A/N - for today’s Densi-mber prompt. This group is single-handedly restoring my Christmas spirit. A shout out to you all. @densi-mber
__   __   __   __   __   __   __
Jason is used to being brave for his little sister. It’s been his job for a few years now. He’s only seven, but he feels the weight of being the older sibling – the man of what was a family of two for a while. He’s sitting next to Kimmy on the floor in front of the Christmas tree. Deeks and Kensi watch them from the kitchen.
“What do you think they’re talking about?” Kensi wonders, looking at the way Jay puts his arm around his sister and pulls her close. Kimmy is only five, and it’s hard not to laugh and the seriousness of the two children as they talk in the lights of the tree.
“Umm, plotting to steal more dessert tonight?” Deeks jokes, but when he looks up and he sees his little girl wipe a tear away from her eye, and the way her big brother holds her, he is devastated. What could weigh so heavily on these two angels on Christmas Eve?
They’ve only been a family for a few months. The paperwork is final and they are finding their way, with all landmines and surprises that accompany it. There’s still a lot to figure out. He’s moved to action seeing his little girl cry, taking Kensi’s hand and bringing the family together beside the tree.
“Hey there. What’s got you down, little bug?”
She leans into her brother, and he does what he does, stepping up to look out for her.
“We were just talking.”
“What were you talking about, Jay? Is there anything we can help with?” Kensi asks him directly.
Jason’s face shows every mental gymnastic he does deciding if he should say anything. It’s been like this since he arrived - he’s been slower to trust than his sister. Kensi and Deeks are quiet and relaxed while they give him time.
“We were talking about how we could let Santa know where we live next year.”
Deeks and Kensi look at each other.
“You’ll live here with us. We’re a family now, and this is your home,” Kensi assures him.
“Santa couldn’t find us last year. Or the year before that,” Kimmy’s little voice explains.
Kensi holds Deeks’ hand a little tighter as she thinks through what that means. She says nothing while she makes sure her composure is intact. Jay fills the silence.
“The foster families we lived with the last two Christmases, they explained it – that Santa has to plan his route far in advance and that he can’t always find kids if they move around a lot.”
Kensi is desperate not to cry as Jay explains it so matter-of-factly. Deeks is struggling to hide his anger.
“It’s ok, though,” Jay tells them. “This is the nicest house we’ve ever gotten to stay in. It’s like a Christmas present.”
And Kensi can’t stop the tear from falling.
“What’s the matter, moma?” Kimmy asks.
“I’m just thinking about how brave you two are, and how well you took care of each other. I’m so proud of both of you,” she tells them.
“We got a family for Christmas. What could be better than that,” Kimmy tells them, reaching out to give Kensi a hug.
“Come here, bug guy,” Deeks says as he joins the embrace, and soon all four of them are together.
“I feel like I need to let you two in on a little secret,” Deeks tells them as he holds them close. “I absolutely agree that getting to be a family is the best gift we could have hoped for. But when we filed all the adoption papers, we filed all the change of address papers with the North Pole, too.”
“You did,” Kimmy says in wonder.
“Deeks is a lawyer,” Kensi reminds them. “He knows all the right paperwork to fill out.”
“What does that mean,” Jay asks.
Deeks gets up and goes to another room, coming back with something behind his back. “It means that Santa knows where you live this year. He even did a trial run with your Christmas stockings to make sure everything would go perfectly.”
“He did?” Kimmy says, now her wonder mixed with excitement.
Jay is skeptical, but Deeks brings his arms around and in each hand he has a stocking with their name on it and a hook to use to hang it on the mantle.
The children’s eyes go wide with excitement, and although Jay wants to play it cool, he just can’t. It’s been three years since he celebrated a Christmas like other kids do, and he missed it so much. Tears start to fall from the usually stoic child, and he runs at Deeks and throws his arms around him.
Kensi reaches over to free up Deeks’ hands so he can return the hug. He goes down on his knees so that he can look his son in the eye and reassure him.
“We are going to have so many great Christmases together little man.” Kimmy runs at them, too, never wanting to miss out on a group hug. It’s like the past two years have created a hug deficit she is eager to recoup.
“I love you, daddy,” the little girl whispers. He hears it, and he feels like his heart will burst with love.
Kensi finishes hanging the kids’ stockings and the kids run to the mantle to see the stocking up close. They are smiling and giggling and are carefree for a moment. They’ll take every moment of joy they can get.
Deeks puts his arm around Kensi. Neither of them knows if they have enough love to heal the wounds of the past for these two little ones, but they are determined to try.
It’s going to be a very, merry, Christmas.

Magic deal
A/N: Here comes my annual contribution to Densi-mber. Set between Seasons 3-5.
Day 11:  Kensi/Deeks trying to cheer up or take care of the other after a rough day.
--------------------------------------------
The outcome of their last op took them to San Francisco. Well, not the outcome but Callen and Sam’ statement, ‘we are the senior agents, we choose who gets a 382 miles drive’. After nine days working on their last case, the team recovered weapons and classified intel that were stolen in a Freemont’s precinct, which had to be delivered safely along with the NCIS agent that joined them to coordinate the operation.
Unfortunately, the military plane that took Kensi, Deeks and Special Agent Heck to San Francisco was not available for a return trip, as any other commercial flight for the next 3 days. December 24th could be a bit of a problem for making last minute reservations, being a car trip the only option to return to LA in time for Christmas. Deeks loved the idea of spending a six hours drive with Kensi, annoying her with games, questions and Christmas songs, but alone in the car he could sense that something was bothering her.
‘’Little Saint Nick’ is by far the best song for the holidays, it has nice background music, it’s cheerful and it has history. It’s really important to know Santa’s routine on his big night. What do you say?’ He had rambled about Christmas songs and their contribution to the “merry spirit” for five minutes now. She was still silent.
‘If you say so.’ Kensi said as she watched the sunset in the passenger seat. She was distracted and distant, exhaustion taking over her as they were finally alone. Their partnership didn’t begin as peaceful and joyous as Hetty expected, but they were slowly becoming comfortable with each other and learning to relax as friends during the day brakes.
‘Hey, I get that you’re tired, but you haven’t complained about my non-stopping talk yet and you look like the girl in sad movies that stares at the old house while moving out, are you okay?’
She turned to him, surprised at his worried tone. ‘Yeah, I’m just…tired, that’s all.’
‘Sure…you’re sad because everyone is having a feast at OPS while you’re stuck with protein bars and old peanuts until our next stop. Come on partner, what’s wrong?’
Kensi sighted, she hoped their long trip would make him less persistent in his eagerness to know everything that was passing through her mind. Of course he couldn’t just let it go.
‘I told you, just tired.’
‘If you tell me I’ll be quiet for the next fifteen minutes. That’s a great offer.’ He smiled, then looked at her trying to lighten her mood just a bit.
She glanced at him, ‘As if I was listening to you…’ Cocky remark, better than silence.
‘Hurtful, Kens…hey, you can’t expect me to share a long tedious ride with you like this. Besides, it’s almost Christmas, you have to spread love and happiness. Just tell me, I’ll give you a great piece of advice and all your problems will be solved, magic deal.’ She could tell he was really trying to have an honest conversation. He was willing to offer her some peace of mind, but her habit of keeping feelings to herself was solid.
‘Why do you want to know so badly?’ Once again, her voice had a different tone.
‘You’re obviously upset. I just want to cheer you up, that’s all.’ No jokes, no teasing, he meant it. ‘But you know what? It doesn’t matter, I wa-’
‘Deeks…’ She cut him, afraid that she bothered him. He was nice and friendly, and she was being harsh to him in return, great. ‘I’m sorry, I’m…I’m not used to this. I appreciate it, I really do, but talking and sharing is not my thing.’ She looked at him, wishing to express more than she could with words.
‘Okay, not sharing then. Plan B.’
‘What’s plan B?’
A wide smile appeared on his face and as he turned up the music he proudly announced his plan, ‘Bribing you with food it is, my little sad companion.’
They stopped for pizza at a service area. As they shared a large Carbonara Special he began a light chat about abandoning their life as federal agents and travelling all over the State, discovering forgotten places and rescuing every dog they would come across. They talked about the countries they would like to visit and about their favorite TV shows; after that, they bet the last piece of pizza at rock, paper, scissor. She obviously won, west coast rules could be tricky.  Deeks’ carefree attitude and the food made her relax, and maybe even smile a bit when they fought like eight years old kids about their dream car and which one was better.
They returned to the car to fill up the gas before leaving when ‘Take on me’ began playing on the radio. Deeks danced and singed with great delight as if nobody was watching while she was crying from laughter at his total lack of shyness. She thought she was about to die of laughter when an old lady smiled and approached to him, dancing at the end of the song. Satisfied with his performance, he paid, congratulated Louise for her great moves and joined Kensi to continue with their trip. He was really something.
‘Thank you.’ She smiled softly at him. He made her laugh, forget and changed completely her mood. Kensi realized that no one had never put so much effort to know her. Deeks could be prying, but he was respectful and patient, making her comfortable enough to share untold stories or information that either Callen or Sam knew, she slowly opened up to him. She trusted him with her safety, sure she could trust him with her friendship.
‘Christmas is always a hard time, kind of a painful reminder that I failed my Dad and that I couldn’t fight hard enough for Jack. Since my Dad left, I’ve never really celebrated it.’ Looking shyly at her hands, she ate the last protein bar waiting for his reaction.
‘Like the Grinch but sexier?’ Her laugh filled the car once again. Deeks searched for her eyes, smiling softly, almost whispering. ‘If you want I can dance for you in the middle of a gas station as a new tradition for Christmas.’
‘Weren’t you even the slightest embarrassed?’ Kensi couldn’t believe he would share such an over-the-top performance in front of three families and an astonished cashier without even blushing.
‘It made you laugh, didn’t it?’ And for that, it was worth all the effort.
------------------------------------

Thanks to the incomparable @ejzah and her partner in crime @mashmaiden for putting together such a lovely @densi-mber!
A/N: Wishing everyone a Happy New Year! Can’t believe it’s the end of another year.
***
Until the End of Time
“Are they asleep?” Deeks whispered, creeping into the living room. Kensi nodded, speaking equally quiet.
“Just a minute ago.”
Peering over the couch, Deeks smiled down at the twins cradled on Kensi’s lap. At three days old, Caleb and Sophia were remarkably calm and settled into the family. Deeks wasn’t sure if it was just a honeymoon period, but he intended to enjoy it for as long as it lasted.
“Come here,” Kensi said, patting the spare cushion. Deeks slid in next to her, carefully transferring Caleb into his arms. Caleb twitched slightly, one of his hands clenching and unclenching, but then settled again, turning his little face into Deeks’ chest.
“How was your meeting?”
“Good. I think we made some headway on the case. Sorry about skipping out on you,” Deeks apologized. Technically, he was supposed to be on maternity leave right now, but one of his clients had called in a state.
“It’s ok. I’m glad you were able to help.“ She leaned up to kiss him. “But now I get you all to myself for the rest of the holiday.”
“All yours,” he promised. Then reached out to tweak Sophia’s bare foot. “And these guys.”
“Not exactly a wild celebration,” Kensi observed wryly. “I think if I have anything to drink, I’ll pass out in two seconds.”
Deeks chuckled, feeling pretty much the same. Even with the twins sleeping well, they still were fairly exhausted.
“It may be a sedate night, but it’s certainly been a wild year,” Deeks said, caressing Kensi’s cheek in a soothing rhythm. “We started out the year with one kid, working for NCIS, to food poisoning turning into a surprise pregnancy—”
“Oh my god, you’re never going to let me live down the food poisoning thing, are you?” Kensi groaned, pressing her forehead into his chest.
“Oh, that story’s going to come up every time we talk about these two.” He chuckled, remembering Kensi’s ire aimed in his direction, followed by her immediate giddy apology when they found out she was pregnant. “You yelled at me for like a week straight and threw away my chicken parmigiana the day after I got it. And all the time it was our little Pastry Babies causing all the trouble.”
Kensi’s lips twisted in a grimace, then she allowed a sheepish smile. “It is kind of ridiculous that I thought I had food poisoning for two weeks and never once thought I could be pregnant.”
“But it made the surprise that much better,” Deeks said.
“Would you change anything?” Kensi asked unexpectedly. Deeks sensed there was more to the question, so he stayed silent, waiting for her to gather her thoughts
“This year is completely different that from what we expected. Obviously not the job part, because we were both pretty burnt out on fieldwork. Clearly.” She made a noise that perfectly encapsulated Deeks’ feelings on the matter. “But it probably would have been easier if we had more time to plan for these guys or to buy a bigger house.” Finishing, Kensi titled her head up towards Deeks.
“Would I change having the most beautiful twins in the world with the love of my life?” He said, shaking his head. “No. Not in a million years, Kens. This life we built with Rosa, we’re continuing to build with the twins, is everything, and I couldn’t think of anything that would make it better.”
Kensi wiped a tear away from her eye, laughing wetly. “Ok, you need to stop making such amazing speeches while I’m still coming down from pregnancy hormones,” she joked. She leaned forward until their lips met. “I love you, Marty Deeks, and I wouldn’t want to live this life with anyone but you.”
“I love you, Kensi Blye. Until the end of time,” Deeks whispered back.

Densi-mber Day 13 - Kensi and Deeks run into Polina and Brett [Neighborhood Watch]
It was a rainy Friday the 13th. Kensi was clearing glasses and wiping down the bar after several customers had left.  Christmas lights were twinkling in the main window. Deeks was running bus pans to the back and checking on his mom. Just a normal, albeit damp night, at the Squid and the Dagger.
“Melissa? Is that you?” Kensi’s head snapped up and looked toward the door. She squinted, trying to figure out who it was and how they knew that name and why the voice sounded so familiar. “It’s us, Brett and Polina. We were neighbors, remember? Where’s Justin? Do you work here?”
Kensi didn’t know what to do but she needed to get a hold of Deeks and warn him. She smiles at the couple, sets them up with a glass of wine each in a booth and RUNS to the kitchen. She practically knocks Deeks over has he comes out of the kitchen. “Whoa there SugarBear, what’s got you all riled up?” Kensi grabs her husband and drags him back into the kitchen.
“You are NOT going to believe this but remember that whacky, crazy, couple that wanted to have a foursome with us when we were working the Russian spy ring?” Deeks closed his eyes, trying to remember, and gasped. “Brett and Polina?”
“Yes!”
“You have got to be kidding! Where are they?”
“I set them up in #5 and came looking for you. What do we tell them?”
Deeks scratched at the back of his neck. His usual tell when he was thinking. “Well, we tell them half truths. We’re still married, we bought the place when my artwork wasn’t selling due to a change in the market and we wanted something more stable and this place has been fun because we get to work together. And we CANNOT let Mama meet them!!!”
Kensi nodded in agreement. “We need to get them out of here quickly. And NO we are not interested in getting together. Do you understand Hubby!” Deeks chuckled it was a crazy evening. With a plan of action agreed upon, the happy couple approached their guests.
Polina’s eyes lit up when she saw “Justin”. Kensi noticed and placed herself semi in front of her husband and out of the attractive blond’s reach. Deeks rubbed his hand on his wife’s waist to calm her down and whispered “easy Tiger” in her left ear. Brett offered a hand to “Justin” and the two men stared at each other. Deeks remembered how he didn’t like the way Brett looked at his then pretend wife, much like he didn’t like the way he was now looking at his actual wife.  Yeah they need to get them out here.
Small talk was exchanged and much like that dinner long ago, the couple tried to entice Justin and Melissa into coming to dinner and renew acquaintances. This time the bar owners were able to beg off due to ownership, time of year, gosh it’s just too bad, yada yada yada.
Fortunately, the nine o’clock movie crowd was making its way into the bar. Brett looked at his watch. “Honey we need to get going.” Polina nodded and started to get up. Justin was happy to comp the wine and thanked them for coming in.
Deeks offered a “Happy Holidays!” as Kensi was seating new customers. Brett and Polina headed for the door. Kensi came up behind her husband and swatted at him. “What are you looking at?”
“I wonder if Polina is still modeling? Cause that walk……”
Kensi shoved a bus pan into her husband’s hands. “How about you watch me walk back into the kitchen and I remind you how good you’ve got things right here.” With that, she turned and sauntered to the back with her happy husband hot on her heels.

@densi-mber : New Year’s (doesn’t really fit into either one of the prompts, but it does fit the holiday, soo........)
For all the good that had happened to him this year there was also a lot of it that came with the bad. He had known love and loss and what it feels like to lose the possibility of that one thing you love most in the world, and somewhere along the lines the year had taught him love was worth every risk and every heart ache. Yet, love had made his life fuller, greater, and made him yearn for things he never knew he wanted.
She was quiet when she sat on the couch next to him, sticking a beer in his hands. “Penny for your thoughts?”
“Sure.” He said as he took a sip of his beer. “I was just, reflecting. New Year’s resolutions and such and thinking back on what this year had taught me and what’s happened.”
“And what does that mean?” She asked as she put her head on his shoulder.
“There was a lot of bad this year, I have to admit it. But with that came a lot of good as well. I really don’t know if I feel upset this year is over or grateful.”
He could feel the soft chuckle she let out and the nod in agreement. “I think I know exactly what you mean.”
“I think… What it comes down to though, Kens. Isn’t so much the premise of a new year, or new year’s resolution. At my age now, and with what we do, I’m looking at this in an entirely different way than I did when I was younger.”
“And that is?” She asked, the questioning apparent in her tone.
“Well, I don’t think it ever matters if the year was better or worse in the long run. Or what my New Year’s resolutions are and if I will achieve them or not. Because between all the good and bad that has happened the greatest lesson I have learned that that I want to ring in 70 more new years. And the stuff that happens between December 31st and January 1st don’t matter so much, as long as you’re with me.” He looked up to the TV, the ball dropping down and the clock hitting 00:00.
“I’ll be with you till the end of time, whenever that may be.” She replied as she reached up and kissed him. “Through all the years.”

Little Drummer Deeks
Another Densi Holiday fic inspired by a @densi-mber writing prompt. This started as the moms sharing holiday baby stories of Kensi & Deeks but might have grown into something more. Anyhow, here it is and I hope people like it.
The drive was made in complete silence, the couple still at odds about their upcoming breakfast meeting and both wanting to have their way over the other.
None of them wanted to be the one to break the silence, but as it typically was in this sort of situations, the young detective was the one to cave first. “Come on princess, do we really have to go?”
“Deeks, we have been debating this for a week, and I already told you in no uncertain terms this meeting is happening” she didn’t take her eyes away from the road as she drily responded, tired of having the same debate over and over again.
“But…”
“No, buts Deeks. We’re already on the way, and we’re not canceling…”
“We could say there’s a national security issue that required our participation… no one will give it a second thought.”
Kensi blew out her breath and took advantage of the traffic light to turn around and look at her boyfriend, the man she loved with all her heart but who could always irritate her like no other. “Come on baby, you’re acting like we’re driving to a doctor’s appointment or to an LAPD meeting…” She reached out to grab his hand and squeezed as she said the next words, “we’re just meeting our moms for breakfast…” Seeing the uncertain look still in his eyes, she decided to keep trying to reassure him, “we walk into firefights all the time, and put our lives on the line daily, today is just breakfast… with our moms… for the holidays… there’s no reason to worry about, everything will be great.”
“Yeah… You, me, Julia and Crazy Bertie in one table… What could possibly go wrong?” He then paled and look at her as if he just had the worst realization in the world, “…and what if Guy is there?” He buried his head in his hands and moaned.
“Oh Marty… You’re such a drama king…”
“Deeks…” he mumbled from under his hands.
“What?”
“You called me Marty, you know I prefer Deeks…”
“Sorry baby… I forgot…” Then a recurrent question popped in her head and she decided this was a good time as any to ask. “Why don’t you like anyone calling you Marty?”
“Not now Kens…”
The finality of his words gave her some pause and she realized the subject must not be a pleasant one so she decided to stop asking… for now. But she was determined, and soon enough she will get her answer.
“But really, why do we have to go? If Guy’s there… I’m looking for an excuse and leaving…” He could be really insistent when he wanted and apparently this time he had no intentions to stop his whining.
“Everything will be fine, and if Guy is there, we will just talk to him like the adults we are and maybe… even try to get to know him, considering he’s with your… mom,” she said the last words sounding uncertain and slightly worried of his reaction. At his silence, she decided to continue, “Shaggy… you know your mom’s life hasn’t been easy, she deserves to be happy and to find someone who gives her that… just like we found each other…”
“But… He’s her trainer…”
“Yeah… and you were my partner!”
-x-x-x-
Kensi’s final response silenced any further argument or reproach from the man setting beside her and they finished the last 10 minutes of their drive in silence, eventually arriving to the restaurant and going straight to their table.
Roberta and Julia were already there, both talking loudly and smiling widely at whatever it was they were discussing… Probably something having to do with the two people making their way towards them.
“Martin, I’m so happy you could make it. I was just betting with Julia if you would bail out or not” Roberta got up to hug her son, not missing the opportunity to fluster and slightly embarrass him.
“Hi mama… you know I would never miss the lovely opportunity of meeting you and Julia” He said the first part of the sentence with an ironic tone, but at the end he turned around and smiled warmly at Julia.
After hugging their mothers and wishing them Happy Holidays, the couple took their seats, each next to their respective mom and facing each other and started looking at their menus so they could order quickly.
After some minutes of silence and sensing the tense aura around the couple, Roberta decided to continue her previous conversation with Julia, hoping with it to bring her son and future daughter-in-law out of their heads.
“So Julia… I brought the picture I promised you the other day…”
Deeks perked up at the statement and worriedly asked… “What picture?”
“Oh Martin, I can never shut you up and today you decided you finally wanna rest that tongue of yours, but now you suddenly want to talk again?” Julia looked at her son with raised eyebrows, always knowing what was going on through his head and the best way to rattle him.
“We met last week for some drinks and Bertie here promised me a picture that she so kindly brought today” Julia got in the way in order to avoid an argument between the mother and son, all knowing how common those were from the few times they all had met together.
“Drinks? I hope you’re talking about tea… or coffee… I wouldn’t want to add alcohol into your mix.” Deeks had paled a bit at the admission that the two moms have met without them present.
“Martin, don’t be silly we were obviously meeting for some wine… and maybe it then got to other drinks…” Roberta answered with a smile, enjoying how her son’s face kept losing color as she continued.
“And it’s not the first time… It’s a glamorous activity that we partake in every couple of weeks,” Apparently Roberta wasn’t the only one enjoying the young man’s discomfort and Julia was keen to join in.
Kensi feeling sorry for her boyfriend, and knowing that as partner, in everything, she needed to have his back decided to help, not knowing that really she was making things worst. “Okay, okay, enough of this, I want to know what picture you both were talking about.”
Roberta smiled in a way that could be argued was more like a devious grin as she looked for her purse and starting rummaging for something. Eventually stopping as she took a piece of paper and held it in her hand, not letting anyone see what was on it.
After putting her purse back behind her chair, she passed the picture to Julia, who looked at it with a huge smile on her face and quickly showed it to Kensi, who squealed in a matter not common to Bad-Ass Blye and looked at her man with loving eyes.
Deeks on the other hand had a pretty good idea of what, or rather who, was in that picture and just wanted to jump ship and abandon these three women to enjoy their breakfast on their own.
“OMG Marty you were the cutest kid… look at that hair and that perfect little face…” Julia reached across the table to squeeze his cheeks, making Roberta and Kensi burst out laughing at the redness that had suddenly appeared in said cheeks.
When the picture was finally passed to the man in question, he found himself staring at a young Marty Deeks who was probably around 4 years old. His bangs were already long and they were partially covered by the fluffy red Santa hat that he was wearing and which highlighted his striking blue eyes even more. The green vest and Christmas tree sweatpants that he was sporting only adding to his embarrassment at seeing the picture.
He remained quiet and passed the picture back to his mother, glaring at her as he did so.
“Baby, do you think you could dress like that for me one of these nights?” Kensi breathlessly asked even as she started laughing again. At first wanting to reassure him, but now enjoying the teasing too much not to join the other two women.
Deeks couldn’t believe the three most important women in his life were ganging up on him… Or really he could totally believe it and he just knew that he shouldn’t have come to this meeting.
“And Kensi, you should have heard some of the stories Bertie was telling me the other day, Marty was such a funny kid.” As Julia said the words, Deeks head fell on the table and he closed his eyes, wondering if this supposedly simple and harmless breakfast could get any worse.
“Roberta you have to tell me now, I can’t wait to hear what crazy things little Deeks was involved in.” Kensi’s voice was full of amusement and curiosity, especially wanting to know of some good times in her boyfriend’s childhood.
Deeks, still with his head on the table, turned to look at his mom pleadingly, but realized he was doomed as soon as he saw the smirk spreading on her face. A smirk that was so similar to his own.
“It would be my pleasure Kensi…” Roberta then proceeded to tell Kensi and Julia some stories of her boy, all which sadly painted the picture of the perfect childhood they all knew he didn’t have.
“…Every Christmas morning he used to come down running down the stairs wearing his holiday pajamas and a Santa hat, eager to open his gifts and start playing with them.” As Roberta finished the story Kensi wondered about Deeks’ father on these stories. They all showed a normal childhood, with laughs and presents and love, but from the few stories he had told her, she never associated any of those words with Brandel.
Kensi opened her mouth to ask, but then decided against it, not wanting to get the mood down. But Roberta was a very intelligent woman and she knew what the woman, that had finally given her son the happiness he deserved, wanted to ask.
“This was before things turned… complicated with my ex-husband. At this time we were a normal family and he used to enjoy the times with his son a lot…” As Roberta kept talking her eyes glazed over and she got a faraway look on her face, clearly lost in her memories. “…Until Martin turned 5 or 6, Brandel was a great father, we didn’t have much but he provided everything he could and every Christmas he got his boy at least one new toy…”
Kensi looked at Deeks who hadn’t said a word since Roberta started telling her stories and wondered what he thought about them.
“…I always remember one Christmas when Martin was 3, Gordon got him a toy train that he loved… after that he always asked Santa for a full train set, but then…” She suddenly stopped, evidently having reached the not so pleasant part of her memories, “…It just didn’t work out.”
Wanting to turn the conversation back to happier times, Roberta decided to tell her newfound family another story from their earlier holidays. “Martin used to love Christmas songs, so much that I used to call him my Little Drummer Boy, because that was his favorite and he used to sing it a lot during the Holidays. But his father was more traditional and having grown up in the 60s his favorite was John Lennon’s Happy Xmas, so our household during the holidays was a strange mashup of traditional Christmas carols and more modern ones like Lennon’s and Queen’s Thank God It’s Christmas… Martin and Gordon used to spend a lot of time together sitting in the front porch, sharing their love for music and the holidays…”
Kensi’s eyes had started to mist with the stories, happy to know that at least Deeks had managed to enjoy some good early Holidays, even if somehow they had all turned out bad after that. She didn’t know a lot of what had caused his family’s situation to end the way it did, but now she was more curious than ever, and again she was determined to one day ask and get her answers.
“I would have love to meet you at that time, you were probably such a cheerful and happy kid…” The love and admiration in Kensi’s eyes as she said the words were enough to melt any man’s heart.
“Yeah princess, I was…” He sounded sad, and all three women noticed it.
Julia, wanting to cheer up her future son-in-law and the man that had returned her daughter to her, decided to share some stories of her own.
“Marty, I’m sure you would also love to hear some stories…” Kensi tensed at the words, thinking that it had been too good to be true, and now it was her turn. “Because my husband was in the military we moved a lot, and one year he was participating in some training in Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina… This was around the Holidays so a few of the military families decided to travel to NC to meet our guys in time for Christmas…”
Deeks was looking intently at Kensi while Julia told the story, seeing all the different emotions play across her face as the story progressed. From sadness, to happiness, to pure joy, and eventually back to sadness.
“After the training was over, all the families decided to make the drive to the mountains in Boone to give our kids a more normal and fun Christmas before their parents were deployed again… We spent 5 days there and it was magical… We stayed in this little cabin and while all the little girls stayed inside by the fireplace drinking hot chocolate and staying warm, our Kensi decided to go with all the boys and the fathers to do some snowboarding… and not surprisingly she gave them a run for their money…”
Deeks laughed, totally imagining a little Kensi, with her perfect mismatched eyes and long brunette hair, running around with the boys and snowboarding better than most.
“I remember that trip… it was one of the best Holidays we spent as a family…” Kensi decided to add her own comment, actually enjoying the memory and the warm feeling it brought her. “After we came back from the mountain, everyone went back to the cabin, but I remember I went with my dad to build a snowman, and we ended up having a huge snow fight between ourselves, until all the rest of the families came out and joined us…”
“Yeah, how could I forget the huge snow ball that one of the other kids accidentally, but I must admit perfectly, aimed at my face?” Everyone laughed, all imagining how the impeccably composed Julia would have reacted in such a situation.
The food had arrived 5 minutes ago but it had remained forgotten until Julia and Kensi finished their story. Now all four individuals decided to mentally return back to the present and enjoy their pancakes, waffles and omelets.
After breakfast… and dessert, was consumed some more stories were shared and after some 30 minutes they all decided it was time to say good-bye and each get back to their Saturday.
As they were exiting the restaurant and starting the walk back to their cars, Roberta turned around excitedly and looked at her son while she said, “next time we met remind me to tell you the story of the first time Martin saw snow, and how he fell on his face when Gordon threw a snow ball at him and my little boy thought it was a good idea to run in the slippery snow…”
Laughter followed all four people to their cars as they each thought the morning had gone well, all looking forward to their next Holiday meeting which had been set for Sunday of next week, to the excitement of the three women and faked annoyance of the one man.
As they started the drive back to the house, Kensi reached out and grabbed Deeks’ hand, bringing their joined hands to her lips and kissing the bundle sweetly. “See baby, it went well…”
“Speak for yourself… 80% of the morning was just sharing stories about myself… and now mama also promised to show you and Julia even more pictures…” Unlike the morning he didn’t sound as exasperated anymore, secretly having enjoyed the simple and carefree morning and listening to the stories of better and simpler times.
“Those stories were lovely, and I would really like to have met you back them… And I was just thinking G and Sam would so love to hear them, maybe we should share them with them when we meet for the Holidays, and the pictures too.” Kensi’s eyes were shining as she said the words, enjoying how they were clearly getting to her boyfriend.
“Don’t even go there Kensalina…” Deeks muttered, not even wanting to imagine the teasing he would have to endure at the hands of the senior partners if those stories and pictures got to them.
They got back to the house 30 minutes later and as they walked towards the door hand-in-hand, as they always did and hoped to always do, Kensi decided her curiosity was winning and braved asking the questions that hadn’t left her mind, “Hey, Deeks…” He stopped to look at her with one hand on the door handle, and the other hand still holding hers, waiting for her to continue… “What happened with your father? The stories today painted a different picture to what you previously told me… I know your mother said it was all well before… So I would like to know when and how it all went so wrong.”
Hearing the questions Deeks closed his eyes and sighed, already expecting they would be coming soon after the talk his mother had started… He didn’t want to go there, but he also couldn’t deny his ladybird anything.
“Not now princess, please. That story is not fun… and it’s related to your previous question, about why I don’t like people to call me Marty…” He squeezed her hand, and mimicking her previous gesture in the car brought their joined hands to his lips and kissed them. “Today, I just want to enjoy the rest of our Saturday, go to the beach as we planned and have a nice dinner with you… But, I will tell you, I promise, soon…” He finished opening the door and stepped inside their home.
“I will hold you to that promise…” Kensi said as she also stepped inside and closed the door behind them, their new Holiday wreath silently shaking with the movement of the door...

@densi-mber @mashmaiden: Densi-mber Drabble
Christmas Morning
The sun started streaming in waking him and his bed partner from their slumber. Slowly looking down towards his chest where his beautiful bride-to-be lays, his blues orbs locking with her mismatched ones.
“Merry Christmas, Fern.”
“Merry Christmas, Baby.”, she says leaning up giving him a good morning kiss.
The kiss turns more passionate, which isn’t unusual. Kensi now lays completely on top of him and breaks away before they get carried away. With all the love in her voice she says, “I love you so much.”
Deeks eyes are filled with awe and wonder. How am I so blessed? He thinks to himself. “Kens, God broke the mold when he made you. I love you so much.”
She could not not kiss him now. They were starting right where they left off when they pulled apart gasping for air. Kensi suddenly remembered that they still had presents to open and she really couldn’t wait any longer for him to open his. She’s surprised she made it this long. “Hold that thought. Let’s eat breakfast and hydrate.”, she says in sultry voice and winking. “Then open our presents and after that we can spend the rest of the day”, she drags her finger up and down his bare chest, “playing detective.”
He’s beaming right now. “You have the best ideas.”
She rolls off of him and picks up her pajamas that are across the room; picking up his pajama bottoms in the process and throwing them at him. “You know Fern, I’m really digging these matching pjs. Just think, when we have kids we can buy them some and we can all match.”
Kensi smiles. “Oh my gosh. How cute would that be! Then we could take family pictures in them and send them out as our Christmas cards.”
Before he could restrain himself he runs across the room, wraps her in his arms and gives her a deep kiss filled with promises of the future and their future family. They break from their kiss as he rests his forehead on hers and whispers with the utmost sincerity. “I can’t wait.”
“Me either.” She smiles, giving him one more peck on the lips, then taking his hand and dragging him to the kitchen. “Now come on. You gotta feed your future baby mama.”
Deeks follows her with a million watt smile gracing his face.

“Okay, I’ll make the batter. Can you get the chocolate chips, marshmallows, and crush up the graham crackers?” Deeks asks Kensi as he opens up the cabinet to get the mixing bowl.
“I got you babe.”, she smiles knowing good and well what kind of reaction she’ll get out of him.
“Kensi Marie Blye, love of my life, did you just make a Sonny and Cher reference?”, giving her a surprised smirk.
“Hey! I know who Sonny and Cher are. I’m a huge fan.”
“Name another one of their songs then.”
She knows she’s been caught. “Touché.”
Deeks audibly gasps. “What! Did you just use touché right?”
She smiles because she already has the perfect response. “I may play a fool at times, but I’m a little more than just a pretty brunette girl with and ass that won’t quit.” Of course she had to change it to describe herself but it gets the desired affect from him.
Her response sends him into utter shock and then into pure elation. “Now you’re quoting Friends? Do you know how much I love you right now?”, repeating his words from years before.
She gives him a knowing smile, walking up to him and wrapping her arms around his neck. “No, but I’m sure you can show me better than you can tell me.”
He brings his lips to her ear and whispers. “Oooh girl.”
As he starts trailing kisses alongs her jaw making his way towards her mouth she pulls back. “Later. S’mores cakes now.” Giving him a quick peck on the lips.
As she walks away Deeks mumble under his breath. “Evil temptress.”
“What was that, babe?”
He smiles. “Love you!”
‘Uh-huh.”, she says chuckling. “Okay, graham crackers are crushed.”
“Batter is finished.”, he replies. “So get over here woman. Let’s get this party started.”
She makes her way over to him, but not without smearing a little chocolate that’s on her hand on to his cheek.
“Oh, really?”, he says with a smile.
“I’m so sorry, baby. Here, let me get that.”, she says getting on her tip toes and licking it off.
“Kens-”
“Pancakes, babe.” Maybe I am an evil temptress. She thinks to herself smirking.
He clears his throat. “Right.”, turning his attention back to the task at hand. “You know, we’ve made these every Christmas morning ever since we went ‘All In’.”
She thinks back to that day on the ice rink and how it changed everything. Now she’s building a life and planning a future with the very best thing that has ever happened to her. “We have, haven’t we. I say we keep the tradition going every year and then eventually there’ll be tiny humans around begging us to put more chocolate in or to add sprinkles.”, she say smiling, starting to imagine their future Christmases. “Of course we’ll give in when they use the puppy dog eyes and then they’ll be all jacked up on sugar, but we’ll think ahead of course. We’ll obviously get them presents like bikes or another dog so they can chase it around the yard; that’ll get rid of all that s’mores cakes energy.” Realizing that she’s been rambling, she looks at her husband-to-be, her future baby daddy and is met with an amazed look on his face.
“You’ve really thought about this. Haven’t you.”, he smiles at her.
“I mean….some.”, she smiles shyly. “Ever since the crash and what happened a few weeks ago I’ve been thinking about it more and more.”
“And what else do you think about?”, he says placing the last pancake on the plate and moves to put his arms around her waist.
“How that maybe in the next year or two there’ll be a tiny pink Channel Islands surfboard under the tree.”, she beams. “Now let’s eat, I want presents.”
And just like that he is left speechless standing at the stove as she makes her way to the table to sit down.
______________________________
“You stuck to the rule, right?” Kensi asks Deeks as they sit in front of their tree.
“Yes, only one present. Besides my presence is enough of a gift as it is.”, he says smirking at her.
“Oh, it’s something alright.”
“Kensalina, you wound me.”, he says grasping at his chest.
Laughing at his antics.“You’ll live.”
“If I have you as a nurse, definitely.” His eyes widen as she crawls over to him, but what he doesn’t expect is a punch to the shoulder. “Okay. Ow.”
“Presents. Now.”
“Yes, dear.” He hands her her gift as she hands him his. “I’ll go first.”
She watches his every move as he unwraps the small box and then tears the tape off opening it.
Sifting through the packing peanuts his hand comes in contact with an object. As he brings it out of the box and examines it realization comes across his face. Not for the first time today he’s left speechless. In his hand is a knife, similar to her knife, but different. One of the differences being an engraving on the hilt that reads Donald Blye USMC.
“It was my dad’s. Mom found it in a box and thought I’d want it.”, she says as she sees the tears start falling down his face.
“And you want me to have it?”, his voice filled with awe. Almost childlike.
Tears now streaming from her eyes. “Like I said before, he would’ve loved you and he would’ve wanted you to have it.”
Pulling her in to a strong embrace and kissing her on the cheek. “I wish I could’ve met him.”
“Me too.”, she lays her head on his shoulder. “Me too.”
He squeezes her tighter not wanting to let go. “So now we both carry him with us and he’ll always be there to protect us.”, he says kissing her on the head. He can feel her smile into his shoulder.
“Yeah. We do and he will be.” She smiles again and pulls away realizing it’s her turn.
Unwrapping and opening the box she pulls out an envelope. Tearing the seal and taking out the pieces of paper to examine them. “Two round trip tickets to Bali?”, she says with shock in her voice. Along with the tickets is a brochure with a man and woman riding horseback along the beach in where she can only assume is Bali as she unfolds it. Yep Bali. She thinks to herself. Looking up at him with tears in her eyes once again. “Baby.”
“Yes, Princess?”, he says smiling.
“Bali. Really?”
“Really. I figured we could at least scratch a couple of things off that bucket list of yours next year.”
“So Bali and riding a horse along the beach.”, she beams.
“There is one more thing. Look at the date on the tickets.”
“April 7, 2018. Okay….I don’t get it.”
“What’s the day before?”
A knowing smile graces her face. “I know there’s something, but I just can’t put my finger on it, Jason.”
He smiles at her and waits for the next statement that he knows is on the tip of her tongue.
“But that’s the 6th. Not the 7th.”, she gives him a questioning look.
“I know, but we have plans on the 6th.” He tells her matter of fact.
“Oh, really? Do tell.” Now she’s really confused.
“Look in the box, there’s a clue.”
She humors him and looks again; that’s when her hand comes in contact with a picture. She pulls it out and looks at it, tears forming in her eyes. There in her hands is a picture of a young Kensi Blye and her dad playing at the beach. “Where’d you get this?”
“I was talking to your mom one day about something and she mentioned she had it.”
“That was one of my favorite memories.”, she says while tracing her finger over the photo. “But I still don’t understand what this has to do with my bucket list or April 6th.”
“Well, you see. I booked that very spot on San Onofre beach that day. For a party of sorts.” He didn’t tell her anything else as he saw her putting the pieces together.
“My bucket list? Bali. Check. Riding a horse along the beach. Check. Getting Mar-” Thats when all the pieces finally came together.
“You didn’t?”
He wasn’t sure if she was angry or happy. “I did. Are you mad?”
Before he knew what was happening he was laying on the floor with her on top of him giving him the most passionate kiss she ever given him. When she finally pulls back there is mixture of awe, wonder, joy, happiness, sadness, and love. Most definitely love. “Are you kidding? It’s AMAZING! Can I ask, what made you decide?”
“Well ever since everything that happened a few weeks ago. When I almost lost you.”, tears start to form in his eyes, but he continues. “I know on the roof I was upset and stuff, but it got me thinking that no matter what; that I want to be your husband and ever since then I’ve been thinking April 6th, for obvious reasons. Then I remembered you telling me a story about going to San Onofre with your dad a lot when he was home. It just hit me. So I called up the California Parks department took a trip with the moms down there while Nellverine distracted you.” he says smirking, “It’s so beautiful, Kens. They showed us where the ceremony would take place and they have a reception area. So I booked it and they said that we can come anytime so you can take a look at it.”
She leaned down and kissed him again. “So a wedding? We have a date.”
“Yes. In just a little over 4 months, Mrs. Deeks or Blye-Deeks or Blye, whatever you choose, we will most definitely be getting married and be going to Bali.”, a smile still plastered on his face.
“Mrs. Deeks.”, she says.
“Really?”, he replies with a childlike voice.
She gives him a giddy smile, shaking her head yes. “Ms. Blye at work and Mrs. Deeks everywhere else. Is that okay?”
“It’s more than okay!” He gets up off the floor, picking her up bridal style and carrying her to their room. “Now future Mrs. Deeks, I believe we have plans for the rest of the day.”
She giggles and gives him a searing kiss. “I believe you’re right.”
