@ladyintree / mikayla would never admit to it, but a part of her wonders if all of them would have been so willing to help her all those years ago, if things turned out a little different— if her neighbors hadn't heard the fight between her and her father, hadn't called the cops. she understands that this is different, that this guy was a threat to all of them, but it doesn't stop her mind from wandering anyway. that shouldn't be too surprising, considering that was the last time she'd seen this much blood, though back then, it was all over her, her fists dripping in it. she's been trying not to think about it, especially with the knowing glances the rest of them kept giving her any time anybody brought up prison— she's fine, and she needs to make everyone else believe it.

that might be easier if she wasn't stuck with her, the person who knew her best at one point in their lives. it all feels like some big, cosmic joke, forced to be on cleaning duty with her fucking ex-girlfriend, like all of this wasn't bad enough to begin with. for the first time in her life, she'd been almost grateful for having misty around, because she served as some buffer, a reason for mikayla and tai to be on the same side, sharing annoyed glances the way they would have back then— but now that she's gone, everything feels heavy between them all over again.

“ what did you mean earlier? about losing the election? ” mikayla doesn't look up from the ground, trying to put most of her focus on the job at hand. but she's curious, because something about tai doubting herself feels wrong, makes her want to comfort her— but she can't do that, so the most she can do is try to understand. “ i thought taissa turner doesn't lose. ” her tone is taunting, but there's genuine concern somewhere beneath it, and that much is obvious in the second-long glance she allows in tai's direction, gaze softer than it should be, considering everything.
