"This is the first Christmas I ever spent underwater."
I liked the part with the propaganda.
Unconcealed war propaganda, with a healthy dose of racism. They literally state that Japanese people are trained from birth to be killing machines and have no word in their language for love. Meanwhile every mention of killing the Japanese is unquestioningly celebrated.
Aside from a few strategically sombre moments, like them listening to a recording of a dead guy's wife saying how much she loves him, the war is depicted as a grand old time. That guy is actually the only American to die in the movie, and he was killed by a sneak attack while trying to save an enemy pilot.
Everything else that happened was just kind of dull and procedural. Even a brief interlude to conduct emergency appendix surgery with improvised equipment managed to be pretty boring. Worse still, the atheist pharmacist who carries it out somehow finds god in the process, because of course he fucking does.
For the positives: Cary Grant gave a pretty good performance as the captain, and I liked the seeing them load torpedoes at the beginning, which I feel is not something usually shown. That's about it. Maybe I shouldn't have watched this solely because its wikipedia page mentioned Christmas...
An offensive movie that didn't even have the courtesy to be particularly entertaining. Not good.

Destination Tokyo 2022
