well guys in light of recent events i guess i'll tell you about Champions Day, when detroit was so goddamn good at every single major sport in 1935-36 that governor frank fitzgerald said fuck it let's have a day about it. 89 years ago today—
Tumblr media
the tigers won their first world series. genuinely an insane lineup with hank greenberg, charlie gehringer, goose goslin, and mickey cochrane as player-manager. known wifeguy schoolboy rowe pitched a great season but he was also a pretty good hitter! anyways we won the world series in game six over the cubs and detroit celebrated until six am. it was the first baseball championship in detroit since 1887 (when the detroit wolverines won the national league pennant).
the red wings won their first stanley cup under the coaching of my worstie jack adams, but we beat the leafs to do it, so yippee! this season for the wings featured future hall of famers ebbie goodfellow, marty barry, herbie lewis, and syd howe (no relation). notably, this was the season that the longest hockey game Ever was played— in the stanley cup semifinals the wings went to SIX OVERTIMES against the montreal maroons, and won when mud bruneteau scored the only goal of the game. they were scoreless from 8:30 pm to 2:30 am. what the hell. anyways yeah we beat the leafs in the best of five series, 3-1.
and the lions won their first nfl championship. that's what they called it in the 1930s, just the nfl championship. the lions won 26-7 over the new york giants. however people simply did Not care about pro football in the 1930s, college football was much more popular and it was the least attended championship game ever (in national peacetime). the weather was miserable and they all got $300 and that's it. glen presnell, the last surviving player from that game, said "it was a way to make a living during the depression" okay!
the nba didn't exist yet. but other sports did! detroit was a majorhub for boat racing, and gar wood wasat the center of it all with his company, garwood industries, which made wooden pleasure or racing boats. he was the first man to travel at 100mph on water, which he did a few years before champions day, but they celebrated it anyways. joe louis was the athlete of the year and the number-one ranked heavyweight boxer in the world (in june of 1936 he would get knocked out for the first time in his career by max schmeling, reportedly because instead of training he got really into golf. i mean he later was pivotal in desegregating the professional golfers' association, and he knocked out max schmeling in 1938, so really it was all fine). and detroiter eddie tolan had won two gold medals in sprinting at the 1932 olympics, which was considered a huge success for the city (he had his own eddie tolan day that year) and for black americans. of the 307 races he competed in during his career, he won 300.
anyways. in the middle of the great depression detroit got to shine for a minute, and to this day is the only city to win the championship for three of the four major american sports in the same year. happy champions day folks!

oh and with the sports capitalism i forgot to mention how much else gets sponsored! it's literally every moment with baseball and hockey lol. i watch detroit sports, so i only know theirs, but a pitching change for the detroit tigers is called a "wallside windows pitching change" and it's the "family heating and cooling starting lineup." the hockey announcers give their "taco bell takes" before the game and it's a "chevrolet power play," etc. if they can say a corporate sponsor, they will. i took a few sports management classes in college and did an assignment about it, so i'm like hyperaware of all of it now lol. very odd how the nfl is actually the lesser evil but it's true
that's so crazy I'd be exhausted just trying to process all the advertising let alone paying attention to the game itself

hii!
how are you?
I saw you posts about the blue jays, and as someone trying to get into baseball, can you like maybe give me a rundown of how the league works and maybe an overview of the blue jays since thats the team Im probably gonna be rooting for? I'm trying to get into it but im completely new to the sport and im honestly a little overwhelmed.
p.s I love your blog!
-🦫
hiii! i'm decent!! i hope you are too :)
omg okay, i only got into baseball a couple of seasons ago, so i don't know like every tiny detail, but here's a little overview! i'm a little honoured you asked me kjnskdjnsda
i'm assuming you know more or less how a game of baseball is played, but if not lmk!
so. mlb first.
the teams are divided between east, central, and west. within each of those there is also the american league and the national league.
AL east: Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays
AL central: Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Indians but pretty much only old people still call them that), Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins
AL west: Houston Astros, LA Angels, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers
NL east: Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals
NL central: Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals
NL west: Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, LA Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants
In the NL, pitchers used to have to bat as well as hit, whereas in the AL there was a designated hitter (DH) who was not in the field, but rather stayed on the bench until it was their turn in the lineup to bat (instead of the pitcher). This rule changed last season I believe, and pitchers are no longer required to bat in the NL, but they can still do so if they want (see Shohei Ohtani, an incredible pitcher and batter). Pretty sure that's the only major difference. The AL and NL distinction is used during the All Star Games where the best (objectively) players from across the league play a game: AL versus NL.
It used to be that teams played their division rivals more than other teams, but the MLB has a new schedule this year that is trying to make it so each team plays division rivals less and interleague teams more (e.g., instead of playing other AL east teams a million times, the Blue Jays will play more NL teams). This is to try and make things a bit more even in terms of who plays whom, and also will allow fans to hopefully see their favourite teams more regularly.
For baseball, unlike in, say hockey where there's just single games against teams at a time, MLB baseball has series, in which two teams play anywhere from 2-4 games back to back. There are winners and losers of each game, of course, but there's also the winner and loser of the series. Series that have 2 or 4 games can have a tie, though.
Like other professional sports, there is a final playoff stint for MLB. It happens in the fall. This site has a good rundown of the playoff format!
And here's a list of over 150 basbeall terms/phrases!
Onto the Blue Jays:
So, the jays are Canada's only MLB team and as a result they pretty much have an entire country backing them. They are very vocal and proud of this fact, and take pride in representing a whole country. So that's always nice!
There are some favourites on the team, especially on tumblr lol. These include:

Huge uproar when he was signed this off season because of a stolen data card that Kirk dropped (read about it here if you want)
But is doing well in spring training so far so he's slowly being forgiven by the fans
This is not every player at all. If there are any that I didn't put and you wanna ask about, go ahead! I just did not want this post to be fucking massive, and I feel bad for taking so long as it is.
But yeah, I hope this helped somewhat! Again, I am still kinda new to baseball myself and do not know everything, but I'm always happy to help teach others about the Jays :D

The Minnesota Twins are an American professional baseball team based in Minneapolis. The Twins compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central Division. The team is named after the Twin Cities moniker for the two adjacent cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The franchise was founded in Washington, D.C., in 1901 as the Washington Senators. The team moved to Minnesota and was renamed the Minnesota Twins for the start of the 1961 season. The Twins played in Metropolitan Stadium from 1961 to 1981 and in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome from 1982 to 2009. The team has played at Target Field since 2010. The franchise won the World Series in 1924 as the Senators, and in 1987 and 1991 as the Twins. From 1901 to 2023, the Senators/Twins franchise's overall regular-season win–loss–tie record is 9,177–9,875–109 (.482); as the Twins (through 2023), it is 4,954–5,011–8 (.497).
...
Yeah, we're cooked.
Lead is fully gone now, and with 9 games left we have to outpace the Tigers, who are on fire and get basically three free wins to end the season. Over the last 4.5 weeks, we have exactly matched our pace from the infamous September 2022 collapse (11-22 to end the season in '22, 10-20 so far now). The remarkable and gutwrenching part about this is it comes literally immediately after the high-water mark of the season, 17 games over .500 after game 3 against the Rangers.
Turns out losing 2/5 of the starting rotation for the season and 2/3 of the star position player core for long stretches, then relying on a rotation, lineup, and bullpen largely inexperienced with this type of constant high leverage games and all running on fumes, that wasn't a great recipe for success. At the same time, the variety of ways the Twins have found to lose over this stretch almost defies explanation. Everything needs to go right in order to win, and that never happens. They're just playing that bad.
As recently as 9/2, after we won the first game of the Rays series, Fangraphs had us at a season-high 95.8% chance to make the playoffs. On 9/12, a week ago, after taking the Angels series, it was 90.8%. It's now 62.6%, the lowest it's been in over three months, and even that feels high with how this team (and Detroit) has been playing. We're managing the statistical equivalent of rolling a natural 1.
I fucking hate the Guardians. We play them twice as often as the Yankees, they are our direct playoff competition, we always lose in the same fucking way, and they definitely hate us back.
The pitching was fine in this series. Great even, 13 runs over 4 games is respectable and solidly above average. Starters and middle relief did their job. The only blips were Jax game 1 (there's been a lot of discussion over the psychological effect of getting out of the 7th and having to go back out for the 8th) and Henriquez game 3 (thrown in way over his head because all our leverage guys were down).
The problem, as it's often been, was the offense. Just unable to add on, answer back, push runners across, extend rallies, or literally anything to give our pitching staff breathing room. It's a problem over this stretch, and it's a problem every time we play this team. Each game had one or two guys who could get something going (Buxton, Wallner, Castro, Correa, Margot), but the rest of the lineup fell flat. It's reminiscent of last year's May-June malaise, where bullpen losses showed up on the scorecards but the real problem was endless missed opportunities on offense.
Eesh. I don't know. I like how the team's shaping up for next year, and there's still plenty of mathematical paths for them to make it this year, but it's looking bad and has for a bit now.
I think I'll be an NL supporter for the playoffs this year.

The Dodgers' secret sauce
Tumblr media
ARIZONA - The Dodgers enter the season with more superstar talent than any team in Major League Baseball (MLB). But what makes this group even more special is team depth and versatility. Manager Dave Roberts and President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman have always valued players who can play multiple positions. Chris Taylor has made a name for himself in Los Angeles doing just that.
Tumblr media
Smashing: Kiki Hernandez goes yard on one of his two home runs against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Opening Day, March 28, 2019. The Dodgers his eight home runs in the team's opening day victory at Dodger Stadium. Photo by Dennis J. Freeman/News4usonline The two latest additions to the roster during Spring Training involved enhancing flexibility, something the front office has loved during their recent stretch of NL West dominance. With the re-signing of Kiké Hernández and the addition of Andre Lipcius, Los Angeles now once again leads the league in super-utility players. “I think they can move everywhere,” said Dave Roberts. Taylor made the All-Star team in 2021, moving all over the infield and outfield. Hernández can play anywhere, having seen time at every position on the diamond, excluding catcher. Yes, he has even pitched before. Lipcius will likely start the season in the minors but will be called upon in the case of injury. Last year, he saw time at first, second, and third base and even spent some time in left field. “I think adding Andre is just another piece of depth, where in a long season, things can happen. So, another guy that can play anywhere on the dirt and conduct an at-bat has sort of been one of our secret sauces on the position player side,” said Roberts. Lipcius got his first crack at big-league action last year with the Detroit Tigers and had a .286 batting average in 13 games. Surprisingly, he was DFAed midway through camp before being scooped up by the Dodgers. “I certainly know bringing Kiké back was a priority, and what CT has done for us over the last five years has been huge, so we expect Andre to fit that same mold,” said Roberts. For Hernández, it is another chance to cement himself further as one of the all-time fan favorites in Dodger Blue. He won a World Series with the team in 2020 and is often viewed as the guy who raises team morale in the dugout and locker room while also coming up with clutch hits in monumental situations.
Tumblr media
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts was selected as the National League Player of the Month for the month of August. Photo by Melinda Meijer/News4usonline His game-tying home run in game seven of the 2020 NLCS will go down as one of the biggest swings in Dodgers history, and his three-home run performance to send the Dodgers to the World Series in 2017 is just another example of how he always comes through in the biggest moments. “I feel like I am one of those players that plays better on winning teams and when a team is winning because of what I can bring to the table. In the end, it came down to Dodgers or Yankees,” said Hernández. “They were able to guarantee me to at least start against left-handed pitchers to start the year, and then from there on, anything can happen.” When Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, or Freddie Freeman need a day off this season, the lineup will not suffer. Another player will fill in with ease. Most teams would see a significant drop-off, but it is just business as usual for the Dodgers. It would not be surprising for one of the utility guys in Los Angeles to be the star on any given night, as it is something they have done time and time again. The rich keep getting richer, and at this point, it really is not even fair.
