Embracing Accessibility and Diversity: The Vital Role of Remote Presentations in Game Conventions
In recent years, the gaming industry has witnessed an unprecedented surge in popularity and innovation. This phenomenon is often celebrated at large international conventions like Gamescom / devcom, where developers, enthusiasts, and creators from around the world gather to showcase their latest creations, share insights, and explore new horizons.
However, as the gaming community continues to expand, so does the need to ensure that these conventions remain accessible and inclusive for everyone. Enter the concept of live remote presentations – a powerful tool that preserves diversity, fosters representation, and empowers those who might otherwise be excluded.
During the pandemic, many conventions like GDC, Gamescom, Gen Con, etc. decided to go remote rather than cancel their events outright. Now that COVID-19 is under control, these same conventions have decided to return to an IRL format for the obvious benefits of fostering greater networking opportunity, spontaneous collaborations, personal branding, cultural exchange...among other advantages.
We were very fortunate this year that even though Gamescom / devcom was one of thsoe conventions that returned to an in-person format this year, they were able to accomodate our Founder / Creative Director Alx Preston's remote talk From Pixels to Polygons – Bringing the Hyper Light Universe into the Third Dimension. They decided to make an exception to the in-person only format this year due to Alx's specific health considerations.
But maybe a hybrid format should be the norm, and not the exception?
The Power of Representation and Diversity
One of the most valuable assets of the gaming industry is its diverse and passionate community. Gamers, creators, and developers hail from various backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, enriching the industry with fresh ideas and innovative concepts. Embracing this diversity fosters creativity and leads to games that resonate with a broader range of players. But for this diversity to flourish, the voices and viewpoints of all members of the community need to be heard.
Accessibility as a Cornerstone of Inclusion
International conventions like Gamescom attract attendees from around the world, turning them into melting pots of ideas and creativity. However, the barrier of physical attendance can inadvertently lead to exclusion. Not everyone has the financial means, the physical health, or the time to journey halfway around the globe to participate in such events. This exclusion can inadvertently stifle unique perspectives and novel insights that could otherwise contribute to the growth of the industry.
The Crucial Role of Remote Presentations
Live remote presentations offer a solution that bridges the gap between physical presence and accessibility. By allowing speakers to present their ideas, projects, and perspectives remotely, conventions can ensure that individuals who might not be able to attend in person can still contribute meaningfully. Here are a few compelling reasons why this approach is essential:
Global Representation: Remote presentations empower voices from different continents, cultures, and backgrounds to participate and share their experiences, especially including folks from foreign countries who might encounter time or money difficulties getting visas to travel. This widens the scope of perspectives and ensures a more holistic representation of the gaming community.
Inclusivity: Everyone should have an equal opportunity to engage with the industry they love. Remote presentations provide a level playing field for those with limited physical abilities, financial constraints, or geographical limitations.
Time and Resource Efficiency: For busy professionals, remote presentations eliminate the need for extensive travel and time away from work or other commitments. This encourages a more diverse pool of experts to contribute without sacrificing their personal and professional obligations.
Reduced Environmental Impact: International travel carries a significant carbon footprint. Embracing remote presentations aligns with sustainability efforts and demonstrates a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of such events.
Technological Advancements: With the rise of high-quality video conferencing tools, remote presentations can be seamless and engaging. This eliminates potential technical barriers and ensures that remote speakers can effectively communicate their ideas.
Looking Ahead: A More Inclusive Gaming Community
In conclusion, the gaming industry's continued growth hinges on the cultivation of diverse ideas and perspectives. International conventions like Gamescom play a pivotal role in this process by providing a platform for individuals to share their insights. However, it's crucial to acknowledge the limitations that physical attendance imposes on accessibility and representation. By embracing live remote presentations, and offering a hybrid format, these conventions can pave the way for a more inclusive and vibrant gaming community.
In a world where technology connects us across continents, it's only fitting that the gaming industry utilizes these tools to break down barriers and amplify voices. By making remote presentations a staple of game conventions, we celebrate the richness of our community while ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table, regardless of their location, resources, or physical abilities.
Thank you so much to Nico Balletta and the devcom / Gamescom team for giving us the chance to share our projects with the world. Here's to an amazing Gamescom 2023!

Impressions from Devcom & Gamescom
Last week was a really intense one for us, as we attended both Devcom and Gamescom. At Devcom, we did the first IRL showcase of Truer than You, during the two conference days, as well as at Developer Night at Courage Cologne. Then we moved over to Gamescom for meetings, where we were part of the Creative Europe Media stand.
Showing the game

Layna | Cozy Games playing Truer than You at Devcom
Showing a game publicly for the first time is always nerve-wracking. We have done a user test of the game before, but it’s very different to observe people when they are playing. We learned a lot! Some of the findings we did were things we had already suspected, some were things we didn’t already know, which is great, because now we’ll have the chance to make things better.
The players
We tried to keep track of the players, and found that 63 % seemed to be female/non-male. We had already estimated that 60 % of our players would be non-male, and this guess seems to be fairly accurate. Then you’d have to consider that (judging from what we could see) the visitors to Devcom are not evenly distributed between genders – we believe there are less female visitors than male. Some of the players commented that they were drawn to the game since they interpreted it to be LGBTQ+, which made us really happy, because it’s true!

The art style
The most common comments revolved around the art style. “Visually striking”, “unique” and “one of a kind” were some terms used, and I, who created the art, could not be happier. The art for this game has actually been a challenge from the start, and I’ve changed the style, especially of the backgrounds, many times. Getting encouraging comments was exactly what we needed.
Rin's gender
Before showcasing, we had some questions around how the main character Rin would be interpreted by players. Some commented that they appreciated that Rin was explicitly stated as non-binary. (I myself got goosebumps when a player called out “yay” at the point when Rin said their pronouns were they/them.)

There were also some players who used the pronoun “she” for Rin, which we see as a good thing, since we were afraid they would be interpreted as male. Seeing that different players used different pronouns for Rin was something that delighted us. (Two players were also called Rin themselves, but that’s a completely different story).
The things that didn’t work
We also found some things that we need to improve, and two things stood out. One was that some players didn’t grasp how the choices worked, and they could miss making any choices at all (since the game doesn’t force you to make choices, you can always continue without choosing).

Another was that some players got a little “lost” when clicking around in the in-game phone, not knowing when and how to close it. Both these things can be addressed with better feedback through sounds and animation, and (in the phone) adding a button, but also by making the tutorial more thorough.
Developer Night & Courage Cologne
After the last day of Devcom it was time to showcase at Developer Night / Courage Cologne. It was our first time at that event, which brings thousands of people to a showcasing night at a club. There are many, many cool indie games to play, an outdoor area to hang out in, and a dance floor (that attracted my attention a lot, since I was in the mood for dancing). We thoroughly enjoyed this event. It reminded us of showing Knife Sisters at A Night of Erotica in Malmö in 2017, which was a great experience, and the first time we showcased Knife Sisters.

Our station at Courage Cologne before the event, next to our nighbours from Greece and their amazing game
Showing a game on a club night is very different from showcasing at daytime, and our game might not be 100 % suited for a loud and crowded environment, but actually, a lot of people played. The happiest things were to reunite with the founders of Gamera Games, who we’d met for the first time at Gamescom last year, and to meet with someone who helped us test Truer than You and who we hadn’t met in person before.

Hanging out with other devs at Courage Cologne
Gamescom highlights
After showcasing for two days and one night, moving over to Gamescom to “only” have meetings actually felt kind of easy. We were part of the Creative Europe Media stand, and met with many new and old friends and strengthened our business relations. I guess!

Meeting up with a female/non-male network from Discord was one of the highlights, another was talking to the Korean dev behind the cheeky platformer Pigromance, and a third was hanging out with friends on the stairs to the Dome in the middle of the night.

We also took the time to explore the exhibition halls, see our friends do a chiptune show, play some games, and get mystery bags.
All in all, our experiences from Devcom and Gamescom were wonderful – and we’re already looking forward to coming back next year!

Plushie loot from the mystery bags!

A type of plastic that can be shape-shifted using tempering
A team of molecular engineers have developed a type of plastic that can be shape-shifted using tempering. In their paper published in the journal Science the team, from the University of Chicago, with a colleagues from the US DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Ground, the National Institutes of Standards and Technology and the NASA Glenn Research Center, describe how they made their plastic and how well it was able to shape shift when they applied various types of tempering. Haley McAllister and Julia Kalow, with Northwestern University, have published a Perspective piece in the same issue of Science outlining the work. Over the past several years, it has become evident that the use of plastics in products is harmful to not only the environment but also human health—bits of plastic have been found in the soil, the atmosphere, the oceans, and the human body.

U.S. Army grants research and development contract for precision guided ammunition to BAE Systems
The partnership aims to advance long-range fire capabilities to defeat fixed and mobile targets in challenging environments.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 05/23/2023 - 14:00 in Military
The U.S. Army has signed a $72.5 million contract with BAE Systems for research and development of precision guided ammunition.
The contract, granted by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM AC) Armaments Center, will last for three years and aims to boost the Army's long-range precision fire modernization efforts.
Brent Butcher, Vice President and General Manager of Weapons Systems at BAE Systems, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership established with DEVCOM AC and highlighted the importance of developing a highly maneuverable long-range fire capacity, capable of facing high-value targets on the battlefield.
Over the past few years, BAE Systems has invested in the development of ultra-long range and hyperspeed ammunition. In this contract, the company will work in collaboration with DEVCOM AC to further improve the performance of precision cannon ammunition, allowing them to defeat fixed and mobile targets in environments with degraded or non-existent GPS signal, with a range twice as greater than precision guided ammunition (PGMs) launched by cannons currently in use.
As early as 2021, BAE Systems received a $16 million contract to develop and demonstrate the effectiveness of PGMs against long-range land targets.

Bakit ba mahalagang maki-chismis at makialam, lalo na sa ‘Pinas?
Well, here's the short answer: mahalagang tsumismis kasi may “paki” at “alam” sa pakikialam.
Chz.)
May dalawang bahagi ‘yung seminar.
Anyway, Coke.
“We do not have a monopoly in knowledge. Journalism and learning is a lifelong journey.”
Ang ibig sabihin daw nito, Not Everyone Will Share/Storify.

Flash Forward 2024 reflection
With all honesty, Diana and I did not initially planned on attending this UPLB ADS event, as the next day is our 2nd quiz on DEVC127 Lecture. But with great desperation to at least secure some extra points for the quiz, we impulsively attended the event.
From coming inside the lecture hall with nothing in mind but a hope of not having a zero score, we walked out of the room with something more valuable– an abundance of insights and realizations from the two inspiring speakers who are practicing DevCom in the field of education and disaster risk reduction management.
Throughout this experience, it was Ms. Tolinero-Barraquias talk that resonated with me the most, as it mirrors the path I envision for myself after graduation–being a DevCom educator.
As she recounts her life story in choosing Devcom as her degree program, then to the impactful projects she spearheaded as a university instructor, I observed how she showed so much enthusiasm on sharing this to the audience. What stood out most was her warmth, especially how she expressed earnest appreciation for the field and its role in addressing the needs of communities through a grassroots approach.
This talk deeply comforted me as it gave me an assurance how DevCom students like us will be given diverse career opportunities no matter what fields we intend to explore in the future.
After all, as long as there is a need for progress, there will always be a space for Development Communication to shine as a potent tool for achieving it.
