We’re excited to announce today that Devcon4 will take place in Prague from 30 October – 02 November of this year. The first iteration of this conference took place in 2014 as a classroom-sized gathering in Berlin called Devcon0.…

According to an August 10 announcement from the Fellowship of Ethereum Magicians, a self-organized gaggle of Ethereum developers, the group will meet up for its Council of Prague in the days leading up to the global Ethereum developer conference Devcon4. This event is the last of the fellowship's triannual, in-person gatherings, preceded by the Council of Paris in March (alongside the Ethereum Community Conference) and the Council of Berlin in July. The magicians will gather unconference-style, i.e., based around the informal exchange of information and ideas among participants. The author of the announcement, Boris Mann, notes that the goings-on of this gathering will be "specifically different" than those of Devcon4. Members of rings (the fellowship's working groups concerned with particular topics) and Ethereum improvement proposal (EIP) authors can work together at the Council of Prague to make progress on various EIPs and Ethereum requests for comment (ERCs). The fellowship also has a wiki agenda available via GitHub where magicians and other Ethereum community members can help build the gathering's schedule and publicly list their attendance, if desired. Working sessions will be separated into slots that are a few hours long. A relatively new group, the fellowship was assembled by Ethereum players Jamie Pitts and Greg Colvin "to maximize technical opportunities, share ideas and work together effectively, online and in person, across national, organizational and other boundaries" regarding the advancement of the network's improvement process, like through EIPs and ERCs. Pitts, Colvin, and Mann all appeared at the most recent Ethereum Core Devs meeting to discuss the group's mission, vision, values, and work. In addition to hosting the Council of Prague, the Czech capital will also be the site of the Status hackathon from October 26-28 and the Decentralized Insurance Developer Conference on October 29. #eth #ethereum #devcon4 #crypto #bigfuture #crypto_community (at New Delhi)

…you can’t make everybody you will ever communicate with use good crypto, and so if the state is willing to exercise illegitimate authority you will eventually be found out by them. You can’t audit the ciphers that that every piece of your tool chain uses, including pieces that you don’t control that are out of your hands, and in the hands of third parties. One of the things we learned from the Snowden leaks was that the NSA had sabotaged the random number generator in a NIST standard, in order to weaken it so that they could backdoor it and read it. And so long as the rule of law is not being obeyed, so long as you have spy agencies that are unaccountable running around sabotaging crypto standards, that we have every reason to believe otherwise are solid and sound, you can never achieve real security. […] OPSEC is not gonna save you, because security favors attackers. If you want to be secure from a state you have to be perfect. You don’t just have to be perfect when you’re writing code, and checking it in, you have to be perfect all the time. You have to never make a single mistake. Not when you’re at a conference that you’ve travelled across the ocean to, and you’re horribly jet-lagged. Not when your baby has woken you up at 3:00 in the morning, not when you’re a little bit drunk. You have to make zero mistakes. In order for the state to penetrate your operational security, they have to find one mistake that you’ve made, and they get to cycle a new shift in every eight hours to watch you. They get to have someone spell off the person who’s starting to get screen burn in on their eyes and has to invert the screen, because they can no longer focus on the letters. They just send someone else to sit down at that console and watch you. So your operational security is not going to save you. Over time the probability that you will make a mistake approaches 1. So crypto is not a tool that you can use to build a parallel world of code that immunizes you from an illegitimate powerful state. Superior technology does not make inferior laws irrelevant.

Golem Community Update: DEVCON4 edition

October and November are turnkey months for Golem. We are prepping up for big things in the technological and organizational fronts. We are planning to reveal to our community two very important events next week, and one of them is set to drastically shape and improve Golem.

Even though we have been quite heads-down focusing on our mid-term goals roadmap and the team’s transformation, we are not leaving our community aside. Berlin was a great experience to advance and discuss ecosystem UX subjects — we are beginning to see Ethereum is shifting to a user-first focus and are eager for more advancements on this aspect, one of the big challenges towards mass adoption of Blockchain technologies.

While sponsoring and participating in ETHSanFrancisco, and the adjacent blockchain week, we also supported the Non-Fungible Summit. We are aware that NFTs are not in our scope, but this token standard brings various possibilities and use-cases new to our ecosystem, and this educational 1-day summit helped educate the audience around these topics.

Meanwhile, in Warsaw, our team was launching the demo of Unlimited, our latest product. We would like to thank the community for the enthusiastic response to this.

We are allocating significant resources to the development of Graphene-ng, the framework for SGX execution, hence we decided that for DEVCON4, we would host a workshop on the matter, at the Institute of Cryptoanarchy. This workshop has a reduced capacity and it will be closed, however, if you’re working on pushing trusted execution environments forward or you are a developer keen to learn: info@golem.network.

That same evening, we are hosting a “Cryptoween” party at Kasarna Karin, a cool spot in the heart of Prague we found through some friends, along with our friends from ECF, OmiseGo, and Streamr.

To sum up, we are pleased to announce that after his presentation on DEVCON0 and 1, Piotr “Viggith” Janiuk our CTO will be back on stage at DEVCON4, also focused on the aforementioned flagship product, Graphene-ng: “Solutions towards trusted and private computations”.

We are happy to present and support all these community initiatives, and we hope to see you in Prague!

So how in our lifetimes did we go from these regimes where these activities were prohibited, to ones in which they are embraced and considered normal? Well it was because people who had a secret that they weren’t ready to talk about in public yet, could have a space that was semi-public. Where they could choose their allies, they could find people who they thought they could trust, with a secret, and they could whisper the true nature of their hearts to them, and they could recruit them into an ever-growing alliance of people who would stand up for them, and their principles. They could whisper the love that dare not speak its name, until they were ready to shout it from the hills and that’s how we got here. If we eliminate privacy and cryptography, if we eliminate the ability to have these semi-public conversations, we won’t arrive at a place in which social progress continues anyway, we’ll arrive at a place that we much like the hundreds of years that preceded the legalization of these activities that are now considered normal, where people that you love went to their graves with secrets in their hearts that they never confess to you, great aches that you had unknowingly committed— had contributed to because you never knew their true selves.
