“Holy fucking shit, Arthur!”

“W-what? They look bad....?”

“No, these things are fucking amazing!”

Arthur puffed up slightly with pride, his lips forming into a self-satisfied smile. Devin is admiring the robotic creations with a look of awe, his fingers running over the arm of the bear. Arthur was pleased that he could get Devin to shut up for once with evidence of his talent. This was gonna turn out great, regardless of Devin’s doubts.

“Which one is your favorite? Personally, I don’t have one, but--”

“Of course you don’t have one, you created all of them, you ass.”

Arthur smiled softly, shrugging a bit. “Well duh. I’m like their father-- what kind of douchebag has a favorite child? Anyways... you’re going to be working with these guys, as if they were your fellow colleagues, so get used to them.”

“Ugh, I do not want to see what these things look like at night...” Devin shudders, stepping away and folding his arms over his chest. Arthur huffed, and looked at him indignantly.

“First of all, they aren’t things. Second, what’s that supposed to mean!? They look just as great in moonlight as they do in sunlight!” He quipped, failing to sound as poetic as he had hoped-- though in Devin’s opinion, he sounded like something straight out of one of those stupid Greek tragedies.

The taller man purposely took awhile to respond, peering over at the machines with a mix of emotions. He picked at his sleeve, clicking his tongue before replying. “I guess, I’m not the engineer here... but still, do you really think these things are suited for the age group you’re aiming for? They’re soft and all, but still-- what if someone messes with them?”

“Excuse me!? What do you mean, ‘mess with them’? First of all, what kind of little kid knows how to operate a robot? Second, what exactly are you picturing happening?!” Arthur placed his hand on his hip, raising an eyebrow and giving Devin an annoyed look.

Devin shrugs again, and he looks away in hopes of avoiding an answer; but Arthur is glaring at him with his chest puffed up slightly, and Devin feels compelled to say something to fill the silence. He sighs and shrugs, shoving both hands in his pockets. “I dunno, it’s just all weird, I’m not used to this-- but you make everything turn out great, so I have faith in you. It’s why I helped you to class every morning after Solomon dragged you to a party in college.”

“Hey, it’s not like I’m ungrateful or anything-- but you could've stop me from going to those parties in the first place-- some were pretty awful. And then you wouldn’t have had to drag me to class in the first place.” He gives a cheeky grin and cocks his head to one side, raising his eyebrows. “Am I right, designated driver?”

Devin feels his cheeks flush and he stomps a foot childishly. “It’s not my fault I’m fucking allergic.”

“Yeah that’s one way of putting it, lightweight.” Arthur chuckles, rolling his eyes. He was not at all intimidated by the child like giant in front of him. Devin huffs and he looks back to the robots. The negative feelings wash away and he’s left smiling once more, looking to Arthur and gently placing a hand on his shoulder.

“I’m really proud of you, you know that?” And he grins.

Arthur's cheeks flush a little, and he beams happily up at Devin. “I’m really glad to hear that-- especially since Sully couldn’t be here today to look at them.”

“Eh, you know that ass. Always too busy for us little guys. Besides, I’m pretty sure your basement freaks him out.” Devin chuckles.

“What’s wrong with my basement?! It’s a place of inspiration, creativity, progress! I mean, after all, this is where I get all my building done--”

“Yeah, in your discount workshop, ya cheap fuck. Couldn’t spend money on a real one?”

“Uh, no, I can’t afford that shit. Not until my business takes off.”

“You know, Sully offered to lend you one of his workshops.” Devin hums, stepping away and critically observing the messy ‘workshop’ around them. “And he also offered to have a maid clean it. I would have taken him up myself, but I’m stuck listening to you since you feed my coke addiction.”

“First of all, don’t say it like that, it sounds like you mean drugs--”

“Cola is a drug, Arthur.”

“Riiiiiight, I guess in your case it is, you freaking addict. Second of all, I was never gonna accept that offer; he’s done enough for me as it is, I didn’t wanna owe him anything else. And using one of his premade workshops wouldn’t feel personal enough. Plus--”

“I get it, I get it-- despite the things you guys have done in those, I can see why it’s not personal.” Devin winks, and he narrowly avoids a thrown wrench.

Phillip Howe grew up in a small town with his parents and older half-sister Brooklyn. Brooklyn was always the outgoing one, desperate to be a star and drawing most of the attention, but Phillip had never actually minded that. He was happy to be quietly in the shadows, avoiding the drama that came with that kind of attention. He was a people-pleaser through and through, nearly incapable of saying no and always the one to try to defuse a situation rather then fight. When he followed his sister to Hermosa Beach, attending the same college she had, it was difficult at first to adjust to the new place, but he settled in after a while, enjoying the little beach town. Unfortunately, he had a bad tendency to let the people around him walk all over him - including the people he dated - and that’s managed to get him into a lot of trouble this time. However, Phillip’s also a pretty good liar and passing off possessiveness as cute and bruises as clumsiness is easier then he thought. After all, people don’t expect a guy to end up in this kind of mess.
