Day 3 : Coastal Majesty to Spiritual Bliss: Kanyakumari to Tiruchendur In the morning, take in the sunrise. After that, explore Vivekananda Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Gandhi Museum, Kamaraj Museum, Watch Tower, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Triveni Sangam, and later drive to Tiruchendur, which is about 100 km and takes about 2 hours before you arrive. Check in at the hotel, and in the evening, visit Senthil Andavar Temple, Valli Caves, and Nalli Kinaru. Finally, return to the hotel for a restful night.

Day 4 : Sacred Expedition: Tiruchendur to Rameswaram After completing the checkout process on this day in the morning, drive 240 km in about 4 hours to Rameshwaram. Stop at Devipattinam Navagaraga Temple, Tirupulani Vishu Temple, and the world’s first Parvati Temple at Uttara Gosamangai on the way. Don’t miss the chance to see the magnificent Pamban Bridge. Once you reach Rameshwaram, check in at a hotel near the Ramnathaswamy temple for the night.

Day 5 : Sacred Rameswaram Exploration and Journey to Madurai On this day, travel and explore different places. Start by visiting Agni Theertham, 22 Kund, Ramanatha Swamy Temple, Ramer Footprints, Kalam House, Jada Kund, Kothanda Ramar Temple, Dhanushkodi, Villundi Kund, Sita Kund, Laxman Kund, and Five Faces Hanuman Temple. Now drive to Madurai, which is about 180 km and can be reached in about 3 hours. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel for the night.

Day 6 : Cultural Marvels of Madurai: Meenakshi Amman Temple to Departure Begin your day by visiting the Meenakshi Amman Temple in the morning. After checking out from your accommodation, proceed to explore Thirupanakundram, Koodal Alager Perumal Temple, Alager Coil, Palamudhircholai, Thirumalai Naikker Mahal, Gandhi Museum, and Theppakulam Lake. Finally, conclude your tour by dropping off at Madurai Airport, Railway Station, or Bus Stand.

A Spiritual journey towards lands’ end -Part 2

Day 2 started off with a quick visit to Villondi Theertham (2 km detour from the Madurai highway), where Lord Rama stuck an arrow into the sea to quench the thirst of Seetha . We were there early in the morning and the place was just awesome, calm waters and sea in various hues of colour. The water isn’t sweet any longer though. 

 The only non-religious stop in the day was the Pamban bridge.  Stopping of vehicles on the bridge is not allowed and as usual people break the rules and stop at the bridge for enjoying the view and to take some photos.

The first of the four temples scheduled for the day was at Sethukarai, a Hanuman temple right on the sea. It’s a very small temple and like Kothandaramar temple it has no gopuram. Legend has it that this is the place from where Lord Hanuman and his troops started their journey to Sri Lanka. When we visited there were a good number giving “dharpanam” to their departed. The place is too badly maintained and is in shambles. Even if a portion of the 50 Rs parking fee is used for temple maintenance it will be a better place.  The 1 hr ride to Sethukarai from Rameswaram is very scenic, especially after you take the turn from the Ramnad main road. The road winds through beautiful, fertile villages and in many stretches one finds water bodies on both sides with lilies and lotus for company. Wasn’t Ramanathapuram supposed to be dry district?

A few kilometres north of Sethukarai is Thirupullani housing the Adi Jagannatha Perumal temple. It’s one of the 108 divyadesams.  Lord Rama worshipped Lord Vishnu here and the unique feature of the temple is the statue of Lord Ram and Seetha.

10 kms north west of Thirupullanai is Uthirakosamangai. The Mangalanatha swamy temple is revered as oldest Shiva temple in the world. The annual Arudhra Darisanam or Thiruvadarai   festival during the Tamil month of Margazhi (Dec-Jan) draws an estimated 2.5 lac devotees. The main deity is covered with ‘santhana kaapu ‘for the whole year and only during Thiruvadarai the Lord gives darshan in the form of Maragatha lingam. It’s a large temple complex with huge pond. The Sthala vritcham is approximately 3000 years old. One of the temple priests who accompanied us gave couple of interesting insights; A special Yagam was performed here for Mandothari when it was decided that she will marry Ravana. The yagam was supposed to protect her in case of any eventuality. The temple doesn’t have Navagraha. It seems it was Adi shankarar who brought the Navagraha worship into the Saivaite fold and this temple is much older than his times.  There is so much to observe and learn from all these places that you will always run short of time. 

 Couple of 100 mts away from the main temple surrounded by paddy fields on all sides is the Varaahi Amman temple. Considered an extreme powerful deity this is the ‘go to temple ‘for many politicians.

The last stop for the trip is the most unique Navabhashanam temple at Devipattinam some 15 kms north of Ramnad. The temple is accessible only during low tide in the morning and is submerged in water when the high tide comes.  We reached around mid- day and was just mesmerised by the beauty of the sea. There is a walkway to reach the Navagraha from the shore. One can take a holy dip and do the pooja even during high tide.

The trip was extremely spiritual, and I found many reasons to come back to this place once again. Self -drive will be ideal so that one can pace their visits according to their own interests. The local cabs are slightly pricey and are not flexible with the route. On the whole people of the town are respectful and helpful. As we were about to alight at Chennai, the driver stopped after the toll gate to grab a cup of tea. He turned back and asked, would I like to have one? You don’t expect this usually. So, in some sense Rameshwaram has a soothing effect on everyone.

TN police arrests 3 IS suspects from Ramanathapuram

Tamil Nadu police has arrested three men, two of them Hindus who converted to Islam, at Devipattinam near Ramanathapuram. A fourth person, who police suspect transferred cash to Wilson’s killers, escaped the police net. The three arrested, Mohammad Ameer alias Arunkumar, 31, a native of Villupuram, Mohammad Ali alias Manikandan 28, a native of Cuddalore, and Pitchai Kani alias Pura Kani, 45, a native of Keezhakarai , were remanded in prison by a magistrate court at Devipattinam. Ramanathapuram police superintendent of police R V Varunkumar said, “We had a tip-off about the trio moving from hideout to hideout in the district. Police tracked their movements and apprehended them.” Investigators say Kani indoctrinated and converted Manikandan and Arunkumar to Islam three or four years ago. Later, police said, they were radicalised by the man who escaped, Shaik Dawood. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested Dawood in 2018 on charging of converting and radicalising youngsters from poor backgrounds. He came out on bail and went underground and was involved in funding radical elements, police said. Wednesday’s police operation was led by deputy superintendent of police Velladurai, and special branch sub-inspectors Dhebakar, Senthilkumar and Jesudoss.
