ELECTRIC VEHICLE USERS IN UAE TO CHARGE THEIR VEHICLES AT GREEN CHARGER STATIONS

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has added new benefits to the EV Green Charger services, in a new step to promote sustainable transport in Dubai and increase the number of beneficiaries.

All commercial and non-commercial EV users can now easily use the EV Smart Charging service and benefit from more than 300 Green Charger stations across Dubai. There is also a new feature to locate the nearest green charger station and check its availability.

The EV Smart Charging service enables customers who have DEWA EV accounts as well as guest users (who are not registered in DEWA EV account service) to charge their electrical vehicles smartly by scanning the QR code placed on DEWA Green Charger stations available across Dubai.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, said that the new step is part of DEWA’s efforts to encourage the use of sustainable transport (EV and hybrid vehicles), and its keenness to provide innovative and environmentally-friendly solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. This consolidates Dubai’s position as a global capital for the green economy and sustainable development.

Customers who are not registered in the Green Charger service can log in using ‘Guest Mode,’ to select charging packages, and pay the fees through multiple channels. They can also charge their vehicles using DEWA’s smart app, scan the QR code at green charging stations and follow the instructions. Registered customers can use their DEWA accounts on DEWA’s smart app. DEWA provides free charging for non-commercial EV owners until 31 December 2021.

Customers can accurately locate DEWA charging stations through its website and smart app as well as through a variety of digital map platforms like Google Maps, Apple Maps, Foursquare, Factual, What3Words and 2GIS; ride-share platforms like Careem; car navigation maps such as TomTom and Here Maps; as well as dedicated charging station platforms like Plugshare, Electromaps, and Yellowmaps.

Free charging for non-commercial vehicles until 31 December 2021, is only at public stations. Commercial EV owners in the private and public sectors pay 29 fils per kilowatt hour.

Our mom’s planet is in trouble, and we are the problem. In the past hundreds of years, we have damaged our planet. Estimated CO2 emissions in 2018 increased by about 2.7% over 2017. Moreover, one of the most important reasons is cars that rely on the combustion engine because they are a major cause of global warming. Today, the last thing we can do is to avert further disintegration to lessen our carbon footprint. One of the significant plans is to reduce the utilization of petroleum derivatives. Thus,  fuel cost and accessibility won't be a worry and people will be more healthy. 

Here, electric cars come in. The choice of electric vehicles is best because its carbon-free car exhausts, which saves the environment from pollution. Electric vehicles are the future, and the reason is various advantages.

Carbon Emissions and Pollution:

High carbon emissions from these fuel vehicles pollute the environment and damage the ozone layer as a result of pollution caused global warming and rising temperatures and weather deteriorating day by day. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, DEWA, has launched Green Dubai, which includes initiatives that will empower customers to make sustainable decisions that contribute to protecting the environment and natural resources.

In its first phase, Green Dubai will include Shams Dubai initiative, which encourages building owners to install photovoltaic solar panels and connect them to DEWA’s grid. To date, DEWA has connected over 1,145 buildings to Dubai's power grid with a capacity of nearly 50MW.

Green Dubai also includes the Green Charger initiative to install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations. DEWA has installed over 100 Green Chargers across Dubai and is working to increase the number to 200 stations by end of 2018. To encourage customers to use eco-friendly electric vehicles, DEWA provides free charging for electric cars registered in the Green Charger initiative until the end of 2019.

‘High Water Usage Alert’, the third initiative under Green Dubai, helps customers discover possible leaks in their water connections, after the meter. The system sends instant notifications to the customer if there are any unusual increases in consumption, which helps the customer to check the internal connections and repair any leaks, with the help of a specialised technician. This contributes to reducing incurred costs by limiting water wastage.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO of DEWA, said, "Green Dubai aims to empower customers to adopt a conscious and responsible lifestyle through the sensible use of electricity and water. This supports the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce electricity and water use by 30% by 2030, generating clean solar energy and encouraging the use of eco-friendly electric vehicles. Buying an electric car in Dubai has suddenly become a lot more interesting.

For those in the market for a new car in Dubai, they may very well choose an electric vehicle over a traditional combustible petrol or diesel engine.

RTA (Road and Transport Authority) and DEWA (Dubai Electrical & Water Authority) have teamed up to offer electric car owners a free toll tag or  ‘Salik’ as it is called there free parking and free recharging until the end of 2019. Vehicle registration and renewal fees will also be waived.

Owners of electric vehicles in the Kingdom will get a special sticker that will help officials recognize them and allow them to avail of free parking and charging.

RTA is expected to provide the free parking facility at over 40 locations by the end of the year. The number of stations where your car can be charged for free is also expected to rise to 100 by the end of 2019.

Dubai is aiming for electric vehicles to make up 2% of all vehicles on the road by 2020 and 10% by 2030.
