Dad for One Week Day 2: "You are more than a clone."
His footsteps echo as he walks through the cold, stale room.
The hairs on the back of Izuku’s neck stand on end and chills run through him as he steps forward. The air around him smells musty, yet sweet, with the pungent odor of embalming fluid. Giant tubes line the walls with vaguely human bodies floating inside.
His father, the villain All for One, walks down the hall with a nonchalance that unnerves Izuku. As if the things in the jars and on the walls are something that any normal person would see every day. They’re filled with various organs and eyeballs and something black and oily that squirms away from the light as they pass by it.
The cuffs bite into Izuku’s wrists as he scans the area. Despite his apparent willingness to join his father, he had taken precautions and bound Izuku before they entered the most secret of his lairs.
“Impressed?” All for One’s commanding rings out through the hall.
“I-“ hate it. It’s vile and disgusting, just like you. Izuku wants to say before remembering he’s supposed to be playing the part of the “won-over hero”, “I- I don’t know what to say.” He finishes. All for One chuckles.
“Well, that’s a first. When you were little, you would go on for hours and hours about anything.” He gestures.
The silence lingers after that comment. Izuku knows he should add something. Continue the conversation so he can try to convince his father that he’s really on his side, but Izuku has never been good at lying, and he can’t think of what to say.
He hopes his father takes his silence as him continuing to process the information that his father and All for One are one and the same.
They continue walking.
At first, Izuku had been floored by the revelation that his father was All for One, but thinking back on it now, there had been points where it made sense. Kamino, for one, is something he can’t get out of his head.
He had realized afterward, that the reason All for One fought that day, was not for Tomura’s sake, or some part in his big master plan, but because that was the day that he finally got confirmation that his son was the next holder of One for All, and he was angry about it.
He looks up at the back of his father’s head, where he sees white fluffy hair matching his own green.
After Izuku had finally accepted the fact that his father was a villain, he had come up with a plan.
His would join his father, play his little game and learn as much as he could about him and his operations. Then, when the time was right, he would strike back, and finally defeat him.
But for now, he follows his father deeper into the darkness.
“I’ve thought a lot about this day.” His father speaks up again, “I had imagined it in quite a few number of ways. I’m glad we could come to this peacefully.” He lets the words fade out. Another invitation for Izuku to speak. He needs to take the opportunity this time.
“How-er no, why did you- have you done all of this? I mean, really?” Izuku asks.
“Well, that is quite a bit of a question, my son.” All for One turns to smile back at him as he says it. “With many different answers, I’m afraid.” He says returning to facing forward.
The air feels colder as they keep walking forward, though Izuku can’t tell if it’s in the air around him or the situation he’s in.
“I never started out wanting to be a villain, certainly, because when I started there was no such concept. Villains- as we think of them now- only existed in the pages of comic books, fantasy. I, on my part only wanted to help people.”
Izuku’s heard this before in parts, in the world of his dream when the first, his uncle, had first spoken to him.
“And in turn, all I asked was some goodwill in my direction, and after all why shouldn’t I? You have no idea what the world was like back then, Izuku. It wasn’t uncommon for people with meta abilities to be harassed, bullied, or just-“ he motions with his hand, “disappear.”
“We needed to look out for each other,” he resolves, “-and If I were the man to be the rallying force behind that? So be it.”
Izuku is freezing now, he’s sure of it. He can see his breath where it puffs out in front of him and shivers run down his spine.
“Ah, and here we are.”
The doorway in front of them leads to a dark empty void. Izuku realizes it’s the source of the cold, as he is ushered inside by his father.
He walks a few steps into the darkness before the lights flick on with a switch.
It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust to the light, but then Izuku freezes on the spot.
H gasps at what he sees and feels a chill burn through him as he pulls the freezing air into his lungs.
There, on the wall, all around him are him. Well, versions of him. All identical green hair and freckles at varying stages of life, but none older than he is now.
He suddenly realizes that this was a terrible plan.
“How-“ Izuku starts to ask, tears starting to cloud his vision.
“Oh well, they’ve been growing here for as long as you have.” All for One says as he stalks forwards past Izuku into the room. “But don’t worry my boy, you are more than a clone. These are yours, for when the time comes when you will need them.”
He can’t get the cuffs off.
“I needed you here, today because they need an update.”
“Uh-Update?” Izuku pants out, thinking that he may be starting to hyperventilate.
“With your current memory, so if something happens to you they can be back up, but still retain your skills and experience.”
“Although,” All for One adds on, “We need to do something about that attitude of yours.”
Izuku looks up at his father as terror floods through him.
“Yes, my boy. There's no need to fear." He puts a large land on Izuku's shoulder. "Of course, I knew this was a ploy from the beginning, after all, it’s uncharacteristic of you to have so little to say, but it’s brought you here, where we can start again.
“And maybe this time you’ll make the right decision."
