আলোর প্রতিফলন দেখা: হীরাতে আলো ফেললে এর ভেতরে ধূসর ও ছাই রংয়ের আলোর ছটা দেখা যাবে যাকে বলা হয় 'ব্রিলিয়ান্স'। আর বাইরের দিকে প্রতিফলিত হবে রামধনুর রঙের যাকে বলা হয় 'ফায়ার'। কিন্তু নকল হীরার ক্ষেত্রে পাথরের ভেতরেই রামধনু রং দেখতে পাওয়া যাবে। মানুষের একটি ভুল ধারণা রয়েছে যে হীরা রামধনু রং প্রতিফলিত করে। কিন্তু খাঁটি হীরার প্রতিফলনে বেশির ভাগই ধূসর ভাব থাকে। শিরিষ কাগজ দিয়ে ঘষা: এটা খুব সহজ একটি পদ্ধতি। হীরা বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে শক্ত বস্তু। কোনও কিছু দিয়েই একে ঘষে মসৃণ করা যাবে না। কিন্তু যদি কৃত্রিম হীরা হয় তাহলে এতে শিরিষ কাগজ দিয়ে ঘষলেই তাতে দাগ পড়বে।

নিঃশ্বাসের পরীক্ষা: পাথরটিতে মুখের গরম বাতাস দিন। দেখবেন সেটি ঝাপসা হয়ে পড়েছে । হীরাটি যদি নকল হয়, তবে খুব দ্রুত ঝাপসা ভাবটি চলে যাবে। কিন্তু আসল হীরার ঝাপসা ভাব কাটতে বেশ কিছুটা সময় লাগবে। কারণ আসল হীরা একেবারেই তাপ ধরে রাখে না তাই বাষ্প খুব দ্রুত উড়ে যাবে।

ম্যাগনিফায়িং গ্লাসের ভেতর দিয়ে দেখুন: এটি দিয়ে হীরা বা অন্যান্য পাথর পরীক্ষা করা হয়। ম্যাগনিফায়িং গ্লাসের মাধ্যমে যখন কয়েকটি হীরা দেখবেন তখন কয়েক ধরনের চেহারা দেখতে পারেন। কিছু পাবেন যেগুলো মোটেও নিখুঁতভাবে মসৃণ করা নয়। এগুলো দেখলে মনে হবে যে ��কেবারে প্রাকৃতিক অবস্থায় রাখা হয়েছে। এগুলোই আসল হীরা। কিন্তু ভু���া হীরা একেবারে নিখুঁত ও মসৃণ হবে। দ্বিতীয়ত, সূক্ষ্মভাবে হীরার ধারগুলো দেখুন।ম্যাগনিফায়িং গ্লাসের মাধ্যমে যখন দেখবেন তখন এর ধারগুলো বেশ ধারালো বলেই মনে হবে। কিন্তু নকল হীরার ধারগুলো গোলাকার বা মসৃণ হয়।

হীরার প্রতিসরণের বৈশিষ্ট্য: হীরার এত চকচকে হওয়ার কারণ হল এর প্রতিসরণের বৈশিষ্ট্য। এই পাথরটি যে পরিমাণ আলো ধরে রাখতে পারে তা কাঁচ, কোয়ার্টজ বা ত্রিকোণাকৃতি জিরকোনিয়ামও করতে পারে না। একটি আসল হীরা যদি পত্রিকার ওপর রাখেন তবে এর ভেতরে পত্রিকার কালো রংয়ের লিখার কোনো প্রতিসরণ ঘটবে না। কিন্তু হীরা যদি নকল হয় সেক্ষেত্রে তার মধ্যে কালো লেখার কোনও অক্ষর দেখা যেতে পারে।
