Movies I watched this week (Year 4, week 4)
The blue caftan, my first Moroccan drama by Maryam Touzani, and another one starring Lubna Azabal ('Incendies', 'Tel aviv on fire'), this generation's Hiam Abbass. A daring topic about a closeted bisexual tailor who hires a new apprentice while his wife slowly dies. It's extremely slow, and tbh took me a few starts to get into, but eventually it won me over with its beauty, especially the metaphor of the embroidered blue caftan itself which he eventually finishes. 8/10.

🍿
“Everyone has their reasons”
First watch: Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game, a comedy of manners about the haute bourgeoisie in Europe on the eve of World War 2. Banned nearly everywhere for two decades.
As of now, I haven't seen four from the Sight & Sound Greatest 50 films of all time list, ('Beau travail', 'Sunrise', L'Atalante' and 'Wanda'), which I plan on visiting soon.
🍿
2 with André Dussollier:
🍿 François Ozon's latest film, The Crime is Mine, was an unexpected 1930's-style screwball comedy. A light and fluffy murder bonbon with a lesbian subplot, a feminine message of sort, and Isabelle Huppert as a faded Norma Desmond diva who used to act in the silent movies of “the great Alice Guy”! 7/10.
🍿  Truffaut's worst film, A Gorgeous Girl Like Me, was a chore to finish. No wonder I never heard about it before. An unfunny, unsexy black comedy about a an immoral, horny grifter who was arrested for murder, and the hapless sociologist who fell for her. 1/10.
🍿
"... Evidently, an Ethiopian in the fuel supply: Seems to me I'm getting the old heave-ho..."
My Little Chickadee, a strange western spoof, with two completely subversive cynics, who really had nothing to do with each other, and yet were thrown here together in a middle of an otherwise-unfunny mix. W C Fields, a boozing, resigned con-man, and Mae West, an eye-rolling, horny sex-pot. How incredible this story 'could' have been, if it was given air to breath, filled completely with one-liners, was not censured, and stripped of all the fake moralities!
🍿
Now that Jon Stewart is returning to 'The daily show', I discovered that he wrote and directed Irresistible 3 years ago, which came and went without fanfare. It's a mild and old-fashioned political satire about a Democratic consultant, the likes of which were done many times before. But it contained a fantastic twist at the end that made the whole thing absolutely vibrant. Rose Byrne is gorgeous as usual, and Mackenzie Davis felt to fill the moral fulcrum of the movie, and the end showed why. Don't read anything about it beforehand, if you decide to watch it. I saw it twice in the same evening. 8/10.
🍿
Beyond the Bolex is an interesting documentary about a fascinating man, Jacques Bolsey. It is deftly told by a young director who was not aware that the unheralded inventor of the Swiss Bolex camera was her own great-grandfather. The story of this nearly forgotten pioneer is reminiscent of other giants of the arts, forgotten and now re-discovered: Hilma af Klint, Georges Méliès, Alice Guy-Blaché, Vivian Maier, each of them earned a new comprehensive biography.
(Unfortunately in my view, this one was the blandest of the five, due to the narrator's irritating intonation.)
*Woman Director
🍿
"Stay Gold". First watch: Coppola's seminal The outsiders, the first of two coming-of-age adaptations he made of SE Hinton novels in 1983. Teenage gang members in a mid 60's Oklahoma town, born on the wrong side of the tracks, with early performances by a bunch of the "Brat pack" members, including young, red-haired Diane Lane, and cameos by Tom Waits, Melanie Griffith, and Sofia Coppola as a child looking for 15 cents. Now I'm off to see 'Rumble fish'. (Photo Above).
🍿
An Irish Goodbye, a benign trifle about two estranged brothers, one of whom has Down Syndrome, dealing with the death of their mother. Won the 2023 Oscar for live short.
🍿
3 re-watches:
🍿 “Sometimes you do your best work when you got a gun to your head.”
After reading the New Yorker story about $300K/week script doctor Scott Frank, I had to go back to his breakthrough Hollywood satire Get shorty. And indeed, wow, what a brilliant screenplay, economy of dialogue, elegance and balance, and a perfect cast (each of the 10 top billings stars was born to play their roles here). And so appropriate of him to place the emotional 'Touch of Evil' viewing scene at exactly the 45 minute mark, where it serves as the heart of the story. 9/10.
🍿  “This is your Rubicon. Do not cross the Rubicon!”
My second watching of Alexander Payne's absolutely charming The Holdovers (and the adaptation of the 1935 French 'Merlusse', which I saw last month too). 10/10 again for superb soundtrack and writing-directing as well as general kind-hearted wholesomeness.
I haven't seen 'American Fiction' yet, but in my opinion Paul Giamatti and Da'Vine Joy Randolph deserve to win this year's Oscars for best actors. Also that this will quickly become an American Christmas classic.
🍿 Oh, how I didn't like the heavy-handed Paths of Glory on re-watch. Yes, it exhibited a brave anti-military sentiments for Cold War 1957, but the injustice inflicted by the generals on the privates was laughably outdated. In was nice to see young Joe Terkel, in the second of his three Kubrick roles. And at least, it was the only time that Kubrick raised his own private curtain, by directing his (then-new) wife, as she closed the movie with her tearful cabaret singing. 3/10.
🍿
The Constant Gardener, my 3rd by Fernando Meirelles (after 'City of God' and 'The two Popes'). It's an adaptation of a John le Carré's thriller about corrupt British diplomats in Kenya, a corporate conspiracy by multinational drug companies, and a love story (which is the weakest part of the whole thing).
I had a mixed reaction to this, nothing serious, won't go into it. The only lasting memory of this for me will probably be the Kothbiro leitmotif. 6/10.
🍿
Torremolinos 73, a Spanish sex comedy from 2003. A bald, plain-looking man and his loving wife start making explicit home movies in 1973 Spain, after his career in encyclopedia sales ends, and 'become big in Scandinavia'. The premise is somehow promising, but it quickly develops into a ridiculous story about how he becomes interested in legit movies making. He ends up directing one symbolic Bergman-inspired art fart, with none other than young Mads Mikkelsen. 2/10.
🍿
2 short shorts:
🍿 Dollar Pizza - Food porn of the highest quality makes you hungry: Now I want a slice! No judgement! 9/10.
🍿  The sheep and the flower, a real time (2 minutes) animated movie that fits in 8 kilobytes. Decent graphics, animations, direction and camera work, and the matching music… all in 8kB.
🍿
Throw-back to the "Art project”:
Pizza Adora.
🍿

Top 50+ Tracks of the Year 2019
Selamat menikmati

In celebration of October being Blindness Awareness Month, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 310+ Blind or Visually Impaired faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. Special thanks to @batdadrpc  for helping us out with this masterlist! If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever faceclaim or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!

End of Year Wrap-Up 24/12/2018
Happy Merry to all you readers!
I’ve had a great year but all us music fans have had an even better one! Streaming services mean that now more than ever we can experience the musical output from all corners of the globe (though overwhelmingly the English-speaking parts of it) to understand different points of view, learn of the goings on in other parts of the world and most importantly indulge ourselves in a bit of a boogie. All the moods, genres and feels you could think of are out there, so over the holiday period perhaps try and listen to something new. Who knows it might break the tension with that younger/older relative round the xmas table when you find they also happen to like k-pop/jazz-funk/grindcore or at the very least you can bicker about the tragedy of the current album charts (Greatest Showman: 21 weeks!). To aid you in your quest for knowledge/excitement/small-talk I have spent almost 30 minutes curating a best-of for both albums and singles in the year of 2018.
(NB even with my album-a-day policy, there’s no way I can get through everything I want to within the 365, so if your fave appears ignored, let it be known that I probably haven’t heard it yet. The full list of everything I’ve listened to this year is at the bottom)

Households of US hostages and detainees look to Biden to maintain up efforts to free family members Whereas some are holding out hope that progress could possibly be made within the last three weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency, the households are additionally now trying to the incoming administration to maintain up the efforts to safe their family’ freedom. The Biden crew has pledged to “work tirelessly” to reunite the households. For the households of those people, every day brings extra anguish and concern. Some have been separated for years, lacking birthdays and holidays, the delivery of grandchildren and different key milestones. “President-elect Biden, in the course of the debates, you already know, many occasions he talked about about households which have empty chairs as a result of they’re lacking family members, and we’re lacking our beloved one,” mentioned Ibrahim Kamalmaz, the son of Majd Kamalmaz, a humanitarian employee who disappeared in Syria in 2017. “We now have an empty chair for my father, and now we’re arising on 4 years of that vacant chair. And hopefully, understanding that President-elect Biden cares about households, we hope that he’ll care concerning the households of the detainees and proactively and aggressively attempt to carry them residence,” he mentioned. His sister, Maryam Kamalmaz, instructed CNN that they “nonetheless have hope that the Trump administration can be productive up till their final day, however we’re hoping that the Biden administration will have the ability to choose up precisely the place the Trump administration left off.” Marc and Debra Tice, the dad and mom of journalist Austin Tice, who went lacking in Syria in 2012, instructed CNN that their request of the US authorities stays the identical no matter who’s in cost. “Our plea is easy: We ask the governments of the Syrian Arab Republic and america to make each attainable diplomatic effort to carry Austin safely residence,” they mentioned. Among the efforts by the Trump administration to free People have been reported publicly. Two senior administration officers engaged in uncommon direct talks in Damascus as a part of an effort to safe the discharge of People like Tice and Kamalmaz who’re believed to be held by the Assad regime. ‘I do know it is taking its toll on him’ In Russia, US Ambassador John Sullivan acknowledged to the BBC that there have been discussions underway with the Russian authorities relating to US residents there. “I’ve no increased precedence in what’s left of the Trump administration than to advocate for Paul (Whelan) and to do all we probably can to get him launched,” Sullivan mentioned final week, however famous that “we additionally want a keen interlocutor to interact in discussions of what could be remotely attainable and acceptable, one thing that an American president might conform to.” Whelan has been detained in Russia for greater than two years, sentenced to 16 years in jail by a Moscow courtroom in June of this 12 months on espionage fees. One other American, Trevor Reed, has been held for greater than 500 days in Russia. He was sentenced to 9 years in July for for endangering “life and well being” of Russian law enforcement officials in an altercation, per Russia’s state-run information company TASS. His mom, Paula Reed, mentioned that she’s been instructed the ball is in Russia’s courtroom with regard to Trevor’s launch. Within the meantime, she’s frightened about her son’s wellbeing, telling CNN that she “can already hear a change in his character” throughout their telephone calls. “He isn’t the happy-go-lucky type of man, although he at all times makes it a degree to inform me that he is high-quality and to not fear about him, I can simply, I do know it is taking its toll on him,” she mentioned. Elizabeth Whelan instructed CNN that she too is frightened about her brother’s continued imprisonment. “We wish to give the Trump administration each alternative to give you one thing, to work one thing out with the Russian authorities earlier than the top of President Trump’s time period, however that is approaching fairly rapidly,” she mentioned, noting that the obvious lack of motion on the case is “extraordinarily worrying.” “Daily that goes by is one other day of Paul’s life that he is spending in a Russian jail for no fault of his personal,” she mentioned. ‘Extraordinarily laborious to resolve’ The Trump administration has had success in releasing hostages and detainees, together with Michael White and Xiyue Wang from Iran and Andrew Brunson from Turkey. However there have additionally been failures. American Otto Warmbier died shortly after being returned residence from North Korea, after struggling important mind harm, and Mustafa Kassem died in Egyptian custody, the place he had been detained for greater than six years. Peter Bergen, a vp at New America and CNN nationwide safety analyst, famous the complexity of a number of the circumstances, like that of Tice, are “extraordinarily laborious to resolve” whatever the administration due to different complicating elements like broader coverage issues. “There are different international coverage points which may be larger than the query of hostage releases,” Bergen mentioned. Nevertheless, Bergen famous that “there’s type of an extended and honorable custom in America, round points about hostages and type of counterterrorism on the whole, the place there’s loads of settlement between the Republicans and the Democrats about what to do and who ought to do it.” Bergen additionally instructed CNN, “the best way that the federal government offers with the hostage households is markedly higher than it was on the midpoint of the Obama administration,” when President Barack Obama confronted heavy criticism for the dealing with of the circumstances of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and humanitarian employees Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig. All 4 had been detained and murdered by ISIS in Syria, and their deaths led to a 2015 evaluate of US hostage coverage. Diane Foley, the mom of James Foley, and Sarah Moriarty, the daughter of Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent who disappeared in Iran greater than a decade in the past, referred to as on the Biden administration “to make the return of People taken hostage overseas a high precedence, each in phrases and swift motion” in an opinion piece in The Hill final week. “Mr. Biden is aware of us. He and all of America felt the horror with us when journalist James Foley was kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered by ISIS, and when Bob Levinson was taken hostage by the Iranian regime and imprisoned, with no contact with the skin world for 13 lengthy years,” they wrote. “Our households know President-elect Biden’s compassion from his time in Congress and as vp,” they continued. “However we additionally consider he and the American public will agree that extra might have been accomplished to have introduced Jim, Bob and too many others residence alive. A lot extra work stays.” The 2 mentioned it was “important to make sure continuity the place attainable, together with a joint evaluate with the outgoing administration of all lively circumstances of People held hostage and wrongfully detained overseas” so as to “be certain that no momentum or info is misplaced.” Their piece laid out a sequence of requests, together with the swift appointment of the particular envoy for hostage affairs, the Nationwide Safety Council’s Senior Director for Counterterrorism, and the Director of the Hostage Restoration Fusion cell, and “that any offers made with international entities put the restoration of People entrance and heart, not as an afterthought.” Foley Basis govt director Margaux Ewen instructed CNN that they’re slated to satisfy with incoming nationwide safety adviser Jake Sullivan subsequent week. ‘We’ll work tirelessly’ Most of the households who spoke to CNN expressed optimism concerning the continuity of the efforts to free their family members. Gabriela Zambrano Hill’s father and uncle are among the many “CITGO 6,” the six US executives who’ve been jailed in Venezuela for greater than three years. She mentioned she’s been instructed “that the most important purpose right here is to take care of as a lot momentum as attainable and hold it going all through the transition and that that plan appears to be working and that there is promising indicators that the brand new incoming crew locations as a lot worth on my household’s freedom as the present administration has.” Transition spokesperson Ned Worth instructed CNN that the “Biden-Harris administration can have no increased precedence than the protection and safety of People — each at residence and all over the world.” “We’ll work tirelessly to reunite People held unjustly in opposition to their will with their households and different family members,” Worth mentioned. Most of the officers who work on the hostage and detainee circumstances are profession authorities employees, however some — just like the Particular Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs (SPEHA) — are political appointees. The households who spoke to CNN praised the present particular envoy, Roger Carstens, with some saying that they want to see him keep on within the position after Biden takes workplace, no less than in an interim capability. A supply near Carstens indicated he could be keen to remain on. “Our purpose has and can at all times be to assist the households of US hostages and wrongful detainees with each accessible useful resource and gear,” Carstens mentioned. From: Women and Gender Equality Canada
News release
The Government of Canada recognizes that, in recent months, the daily lives of not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, including women’s organizations, have been particularly shaken as the COVID-19 pandemic added further pressure on their already limited and valuable resources.

July 6, 2020 – Escuminac, Quebec – Women and Gender Equality Canada
The Government of Canada recognizes that, in recent months, the daily lives of not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, including women’s organizations, have been particularly shaken as the COVID-19 pandemic added further pressure on their already limited and valuable resources. The Government of Canada is determined to continue to support them as best as possible.
Women’s organizations provide vital services in our communities, supporting women and girls to be financially secure, free from violence, and able to fully participate in all aspects of our economy and society. Yet for far too long they have been chronically underfunded, underestimated and undermined.
That’s why today, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, announced a total investment of $400,687 for three projects in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and in the Gaspésie-Les Îles regions.
All three projects are addressing the capacity needs of the organizations receiving funding, and are helping them to continue to promote social and systemic changes towards gender equality:
The Centre-Femmes Catherine Leblond in Trois-Pistoles received $133,579 to enhance their strategic planning capacity;
The Centre-Femmes du Grand-Portage in Rivière-du-Loup received $5,212 to increase their diversification of funding; and
The Table de concertation des groupes de femmes de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine in Escuminac received $261,896 to enhance their strategic planning capacity, increase their advocacy and mobilization capacity and develop new management tools, amongst others.

Get to Know: Que Onda Vos
To celebrate the Holidays, Hanne De Wyngaert of QUE ONDA VOS has installed two woven pieces at our Tribeca store, created especially for La Garçonne. One hangs on the wall beneath a skylight, another nestles on a table alongside a selection of QOV pouches—a limited edition gift with purchase. The textural tapestries, entitled Pelu Lost Land and Pelu Map can be hung on a wall, draped across furniture, or strewn on the floor. De Wyngaert founded QUE ONDA VOS (Guatemalan street slang for “Yo, what's up?”) in Antwerp in 2013 and now lives part-time in Guatemala, where she works with Mayan weavers to produce naturally-dyed, handspun wool rugs and blankets (available online). QOV promotes conscious consumption and creates jobs in indigenous communities, ensuring fair wages. We caught up with De Wyngaert to learn more about her craft, sustainability, and working with local artisans.
Hi Hanne, what was your background prior to launching Que Onda Vos? After high school, I decided I wanted to study fashion design because this was where all my passions came together. I had been collecting lookbooks and Vogue’s from an early age and I was obsessed with musicians like PJ Harvey. I loved the work of Guy Bourdin and Diane Arbus and I felt I could combine all of these inspirations during my studies at the Antwerp Academy. It was a time of research, experimentation, and growth in a creative sense. After graduating in 2006, a fellow student and I started the Belgian design label TI+HANN. Following this, I started thinking more about designing and developing products that have a social impact on the community, so I moved in a different direction.
Where in Guatemala do you live?  I live in Xela, the second biggest city in Guatemala, although it feels more like a small village. All the families and communities we work with are one or two hours away from Xela, so we're pretty central. Most items are produced in Momostenango. Momos has an old tradition of artisans weaving wool textiles on the foot loom. Other communities we work with are closer to the beautiful Lake Atitlan, they develop handspun cotton yarn and scarves woven on a backstrap loom.
What inspired you to launch QUE ONDA VOS? I woke up one day with this clear thought in my mind that I wanted to give more meaning to my work in a social way. At first, I was thinking of going to India to look for a fair trade organization to work with until one of my friends told me she knew someone that was working in a textile program with weavers in Guatemala. I traveled there for a month to get an idea of the culture and weaving traditions and I fell in love with their work. Most of the women in Guatemala still wear traditional clothing, woven by hand on the backstrap or foot loom. In each region, they use different techniques and colors. Each design has its own history. Their designs and their stories are very inspiring to me.
What is your design process like? The designs are a reflection of my lifestyle, living and constantly moving between different cultures and realities. They are also a result of the dialogue, cooperation, and interaction between these cultures. I design a product, [the weavers] make their interpretation, and I will answer again to their interpretation and so on until we have a perfect final result.
What techniques have you been working with recently? I always start off with the traditional way of weaving and try to make small changes, for example, I try to work with wool where they normally work with cotton. With the new collection of rugs, we mix the weaving technique with the mecha technique used by their ancestors.
How you source materials? All the wool comes from local sheep and is sold at the local market. One family will card the wool and spin it by hand, while another family will dye the wool yarn and weave it into rugs and blankets.
What do you like about the partnership between QOV and La Garçonne? I believe that our vision to create beautiful products and to stir emotion lies similarly with La Garçonne’s. La Garçonne shows the whole story of QUE ONDA VOS: different styles, inspirations, and techniques. The Dulce rugs are inspired by a detail from a traditional handwoven Guatemalan textile; the Ayahuasca rugs by the spiritual Ayahuasca ceremony; others are inspired by nature.
How would you describe your own personal style? I love comfort and femininity—raw and edgy but still fine and pure. I like for the Undercover, Maryam Nassir Zadeh shoes, and Mansur Gavriel bags.
What can we expect from Que Onda Vos in the future? Definitely more new designs of rugs, blankets, and cushions, and we're really excited about our new glassware collection, which is all handblown and recycled. We're experimenting with some other pieces too, but it’s still a little too soon to tell.

. Afdal Hadi, Putri Alyani Fadhilah, Dian Astrina, Hagairim Sagala, Hafiz Fauzan Azim, Wulandari, Popi Safitri Jona, Maryam, Ricko Rahmad, Rizki Tirnando, Oktri Lestari, Sarah Meilinda Alfarisy, Franciscus Edi Priyono, Jeffry Martunas Oktavianus, Sandres Siahaan. . Kalau ingat mereka, rasanya pengen bilang, "Untung KKN di Kemuning Muda, untung aja pas deadline essay program KKN lain saya lagi ujian 2 mata kuliah, untung aja nama desanya cantik jadi dipilih aja walaupun pas milih gatau sama sekali dimananya, untung aja portal saya selalu lambat dan ngisinya telat. Untung. Untung. Untung." . . Salam, Tukang ketik KKN Kemuning Muda yang panikan 😅😅 . #kepanjangancaption #maaf #rindu #KKN2015 #KKNUR2015 #kukertaUR2015 #universitasriau
