L’actrice Hélène Fillières passe derrière la caméra et se porte volontaire pour décrire la trajectoire d’une jeune recrue a priori improbable au sein de la Marine. Laure Baer semblé née sous une bonne étoile. Fille d’une comédienne renommée (jouée par Josiane Balasko), elle enchaîne avec succès de brillantes études. Oui mais voilà, ces études à rallonge commencent à la lasser et elle ne sait toujours pas quoi faire de sa vie. Alors elle postule pour un poste d’officier à la Marine Nationale et elle est reçue à sa grande surprise et au désarroi de sa mère qui ne veut pas voir sa fille “mal tourner”. Ah, ça, quand on est bobo de gauche, on a un peu de mal à voir sa fille s’engager dans un corps militaire. Si “Volontaire” tient à peu près ses promesses au niveau de l’immersion dans ce milieu d’hommes, on regrette que l’intrigue amoureuse reste un peu plate. Le trouble aurait pu être plus grand peut-être, plus culotté. Diane Rouxel qui incarne la jeune recrue n’est néanmoins pas en faute. Elle porte avec honneur et panache le film sur ses frêles épaules, le regard tantôt pur, tantôt franc, tantôt troublant. Elle confirme avec ce troisième film - pour l’année 2018 - après les Garçons sauvages et Mes provinciales que c’est une actrice sur laquelle il faudra compter.
