the live rerecording of diary is bananaballs. i wouldn't say it replaces the original, but it's a great addition. this is by far my favorite of the old guy bands doing their heyday material. the recordings are pretty faithful, but instead of the screaming, mauled desperation of people in their early twenties, the loneliness is a much gentler, worn-in melancholy. very much like examining the things that hurt you and finding they don't have the broken glass, jagged edges they used to. it's remembered pain through the distorted wavy glass of decades.
they're all better technical musicians now, as they should be after thirty years. as much as i loved jeremy enigk's shrieking, squeezed out vocals, it obviously wasn't a sustainable sound. he can still hit the notes, but it doesn't sound like he's going to blow out his vocal cords on tour. i always loved william goldsmith's drums, but he has a harder hitting sound and better fills now. and i love '90s recordings for what they are, but my usual complaint is still true in diary's 1993 sessions. the drums sound like they were recorded alone in a tin can by the hi-hat version of christopher walken's bruce dickinson.

RIDE Shares New Single "Last Frontier" + Announces NA, UK, and IRE Tour
Tumblr media
Ride reveals their latest single “Last Frontier,” marking the second preview from their upcoming seventh album, Interplay, scheduled for release on March 29 via Wichita Recordings / PIAS. With the launch of this single, the band from Oxford announces tours across North America, the UK, and Ireland. They will begin their tour in North America in May, shortly after “Interplay” is released, followed by performances in the UK and Ireland in September, featuring a notable show at London’s Roundhouse. Tickets will be available for purchase at 10am on Friday through their official website. “Last Frontier” showcases a gradually intensifying ethereal beat, blending a rich tapestry of sounds with timeless indie craftsmanship. Guitarist and vocalist Andy Bell comments on the song’s evolution, noting it as an initially overlooked piece from their first jam session at Mark’s OX4 Studio. It was the insight of their producer, Richie Kennedy, that recognized the song’s potential, leading to a complete overhaul at Vada studio, aiming for a raw, Joy Division-like foundation. Bell experimented with various vocal styles during recording, seeking spontaneity and innovation in his delivery. This approach, he admits, was a departure from his usual method, offering a blend of meticulous composition and on-the-fly creativity that he aims to pursue further. “Interplay” represents Ride’s third album since their 2014 reunion, marking a period where the band has spent more time together in this second era than during their initial phase as ‘90s shoegaze icons. Following “Weather Diaries” (2017) and “This Is Not A Safe Place” (2019), the album aims to ignite the band’s legacy anew, appealing to longstanding fans while captivating a new generation. The album, co-produced with Richie Kennedy and mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer, bridges the gap across their career. It reimagines the energetic guitar work, mesmerizing rhythms, and melodic allure of their early days within a broader, more vibrant sonic landscape, drawing inspiration from ’80s pop icons like Tears For Fears, Talk Talk, and early U2. Upcoming Tour Dates: 5/11 - Boston, MA @ Big Night Live 5/13 - Montreal, QB @ Theatre Fairmount 5/14 - Toronto, ON @ Concert Hall 5/15 - Detroit, MI @ Majestic Theatre 5/16 - Chicago, IL @ Metro 5/17 - Minneapolis, MN @ Fine Line 5/19 - Denver, Colorado @ Gothic Theater 5/22 - Vancouver, BC @ Commodore Ballroom 5/23 - Portland, OR @ Mission Theater 5/25 - Seattle, WA @ Showbox 9/2 - Belfast, UK @ Limelight 9/3 - Dublin, Ireland @ Olympia 9/4 - Cork, Ireland @ Cyprus Avenue 9/6 - Sheffield, UK @ Leadmill 9/7 - Newcastle, UK @ Boilershop 9/8 - Glasgow, UK @ SWG 3 TV Studio 9/10 - Liverpool, UK @ Invisible Wind Factory 9/12 - Leeds, UK @ Stylus 9/13 - Manchester, UK @ New Century 9/14 - Bristol, UK @ SWX 9/16 - Falmouth, UK @ Princess Pavilions 9/17 - Portsmouth, UK @ Guildhall 9/18 - Brighton, UK @ Chalk 9/20 - London, UK @ Roundhouse 9/21 - Wolverhampton, UK @ Wulfrun Halls 9/22 - Cambridge, UK @ Junction Read the full article

Documenting 2: Visual Research
Tumblr media
Martin Parr
Martin Parr is an English documentary photographer who is best known for his photography of the tradition of the Great British Holiday. He is probably my favourite photographer in the world, as I love how honestly and candidly he captures life. He has had around 40 solo photobooks published, and has featured in around 80 exhibitions worldwide. When asked about the art of documenting people through photography, and the ethics involved, he said the following:
“I think that all photography involving people has an element of exploitation, and therefore I am no exception. However it would be a very sad world if photographers were not allowed to photograph in public places. I often think of what I photograph as a soap opera where I am waiting for the right cast to fall into place. In more recent years I have photographed much closer where bits of people and food become part of the big picture, and one advantage of this is that it means people are less recognisable.”
Tumblr media
Tish Murtha
Tish Murtha was a Northern English documentary photographer who took black and white photos to create a record of youth unemployment, juvenile jazz bands, kids in Elswick in South Shields, and a series of photos of London by night. Her work is very striking and raw, the black and white photography really adds a sort of grit and solemness to her photographs.
Tumblr media
Francesco Faraci
Faraci is a Sicillian street photographer. I think his work is really beautiful and raw, and much like a contemporary version of Tish Murtha’s work.
Tumblr media
Jason Florio
Jason Florio is an English documentary photographer. This photoseries is called Destination Europe, and it shows the journey of refugees from Libya to Europe. He has done several documentation projects all around the world, and Destination Europe was one that won him a Magnum Photography Award in 2017. These photos are seriously effecting - they are beautiful and devastating, and tell a story brilliantly. This is documentary photography with a real purpose and meaning. These photos are heartbreaking.
Tumblr media
Keir Edmonds
“Berlin-based English urban sketching artist Keir Edmonds keeps a visual diary that illustrates his life as an expat in Germany’s capital. Believing that “you have to put in 10,000 hours to get really good at something,” the self-confessed “Englishman lost in Berlin” carries a sketchbook and pen everywhere he goes. From local architecture to summertime canals and graffiti-covered streets, his growing portfolio captures the undeniable charm of the city.
Edmonds started keeping sketchbook journals in 2015 with the goal to improve his skills in observational drawing.”
Tumblr media
Sam Winston
Sam Winston is an artist based in London, who says his “practice is concerned with language not only as a carrier of messages but also as a visual form in and of itself”. He is known for his typography and his abstract illustration, having worked with some of the biggest art galleries in the world.
These images are from a project he undertook called 7 days - “a long durational studio work where the artist lived without sight for seven days and nights. Repeatedly transcribing five sentences the image created is without any visual reference.”
Sam says, “The idea of going ‘under’ or without images fascinated me. I had read of yogis spending years in complete darkness and psychologists running light deprivation studies but for me the question was - what landscapes are available to the artist when they are only given an internal view for seven days?
Biologically speaking the absence of daylight triggers large hormone imbalances in the pineal glad located in the centre of the brain. This gland normally releases melatonin which is the hormone that regulates sleep - and with this out of balance - you will quickly find yourself operating outside of conventional time.”
This method of abstract documentation is something I find very intriguing. As a designer, you have information input into you and it is your job to translate this meaningfully into the world. If we restrict our outputs and inputs, and put ourselves under strictor creative parameters, then as creatives we we surely find a way to make great work through the power of thinking ourelves out of those restrictions.
Tumblr media
1. ‘A durational work where a pencil line records the length of every exhalation. The length of each line marks the length of time it takes to exhale. These marks were recorded over a 15 hour day without break. “The premise is deceptively simple - marking either an exhalation or inhalation with a pencil line - the length of the duration of a breath. Yet the cumulative effect of this action is a map that reveals a unique bridge between our unconscious and conscious functioning. It is also a refocusing of attention to our dependent relationship within the aerobic world.”
2. ‘An on going series of collages looking a various components of drawing. Each image contains one complete pencil.“This is the beginnings of a process looking at the materiality of the objects that inform artistic practice.  By literally exploding, dissolving and collaging broken down artists tools we reveal their history and legacy. Whether the pencil graphite is from mines in China or the New Mexican cotton farms that make rag made paper - each artwork is a testimony to a globalized economy and the unseen geography of the tools by which we make art. “‘
3. ‘Birth day is an project that charts the 183,600 lives that come into being on the planet over a period of 12 hours. The participants draw circles to remember loved ones and also register their names in writing. In this way the public are asked to connect their own personal narrative to the much broader theme of population growth and decline.“By the time you’ve read this sentence three people have been born into the world. From observing this process I have noticed that the moment a person draws a circle (and it has a name) the artwork stops being about statistics and becomes a wall of brothers, sisters, mothers etc - in this particular case representing 260,000 lives that are born and die in 12 hours.”’
Tumblr media
The text of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was read and categorised into three emotional states – passion, rage & solace. Once theses these three categories of text were typeset & printed they became the material for three the hand cut collages. The final work is the combined print of the typeset category and the hand cut collage.
Tumblr media
Nathalie Miebach
Boston-based conceptual artist Nathalie Miebach weaves colorful, complex sculptures using rope, wood, paper, fibers, and data from weather events. Two of the artist’s recent series explore the impact of storm waters on our lives and on marine ecosystems, with variables like wind and temperature (and the harmony of the composition) often informing the rainbow of colors used to translate the data into a three-dimensional structure.
Tumblr media
Priscilla Coleman
Priscilla Coleman is a courtroom illustrator. This is a dying art and in the UK there are only four official courtroom illustrators left. “It’s as if you’re memorising for a test,” she tells It’s Nice That. “You forget the details so you have to write something that will trigger your memory. Once I had to draw a line of airline hijackers, and they all had black hair but different hairstyles. One had long sideburns so I wrote Elvis, one was skinny so I wrote ‘skeleton man’, for others I wrote ‘potato nose’ or ‘fried hair’ or for another, I wrote the name of an ex-boyfriend he reminded me of! People’s faces are fascinating.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scott Elmquist
This man is a very inspiring documentary photographer. The last image above is an extremely powerful photograph to me. It shows black youth playing basketball under the defaced statue of a coloniser. Amazing. Above that is part of his Americana documentary photography series, capturing rural midwestern America and it’s communities.

Relax, Don't Do It by yoongidontdoit (sammyinnerdglasses) | 24k, 4chp Jeongguk likes to party. Jeongguk likes to party hard. When he wakes up half naked in a Denny's parking lot, for the third time, he decides to commit to something for once and swear to be completely straight-edge for a full 90 days. That includes no partying, no late nights, and absolutely no sex. Easy until Jimin decides to crash land, literally, into his life.
Ocean Eyes by Yanyiu | 49k, 3chp Jimin spent a long time trying to gather pieces of his heart with trembling hands, only for Jeongguk to stumble and let it fall to the ground again.

artifice by solarchild | 51k, 9chp Taehyung is oblivious, Jimin concludes. Absolutely dumb. It’s hopeless. Or in which, Jimin gets some help from Jeongguk in order to impress his crush who clearly could use some glasses because Jimin is as transparent as they get.
You're Mated? by sammich_dominos | 6k, 1chp What's Jimin supposed to say when his friends find out that he isn't the single Omega they thought he was, that he's actually been mated for longer than he's know them, and what's their obsession with idol Jeon Jungkook?

Put Out My Senses by mintsugakookies | 38k, 5chp Jungkook has possibly the worst luck that any college student could have. But it's not so bad when he has a cute tangerine-head of a boyfriend by his side.
dear diary, holy crap i think i'm in love with park jimin by jungkooks hyung (bangtans_boy) | 10k, 1chp jungkook's art class is going on a trip for a showcase and asks jimin to house sit; needless to say, jimin sits on more than he bargained for: the fact that jungkook might be in love with him
throwing rocks in frozen rivers by busan_brat | 37k, 7chp For a while, Jimin and Jungkook have been building bridges just to watch them go up in flames. Maybe the time to start rebuilding them has come. (Alt. Jungkook sees Jimin for who he really is when nobody else does.)
Him by PinkBTS | 35k, 1chp And like the dawn, you woke the world inside of me You were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you' or “I mean a muse,” explained Yoongi, eyes traveling to Hoseok. “Someone that makes you feel the shots. Not only take them.” Jeongguk snorted. “You’re just whipped.” “Maybe,” agreed Yoongi, winking. “But it works.”
bonus vminkook:
Veins of Ivy by nightynight | 20k, 5chp For some reason, whenever Jungkook gets a cut or a scrape, a plant grows from it. He has no idea why this is, but he thinks it's better he doesn't question it. Instead, he researches and learns about his plants. He's always got his head in a book about them, and, consequently, doesn't make very many friends. There are a few exceptional people, though, that worm their way into his life, and for that he is forever grateful.

BeBe Zahara Benet Plus BeBe & Other Winner’s Fest Diaries.
Revry’s Out Web Fest Closes with Awards and Exclusive Performance by BeBe Zahara Benet Plus BeBe & Other Winner’s Fest Diaries.
Los Angeles – Premier queer global streaming network, Revry, celebrated the closing night of its 3rd annual Out Web Fest (OWF), the first queer web festival celebrating the best in independent LGBTQ digital storytelling.    After opening the fest at YouTube Space LA with the West Coast premiere of the acclaimed HBO documentary film, BELIEVER and celebrating the annual Revry Visibility Awards honoring YouTube sensations Ingrid Nilsen, Miles McKenna, Miles Jai and LGBTQ advocate organization LOVELOUD, the festival rocked on through the weekend at The London West Hollywood hotel with screenings, panels and two Powerhouse Industry Pitchfests.  But the Closing Night Awards was the party not to be missed.  With a diverse group of international winners including DragRace icon, BeBe Zahara Benet for her world premiere video, “Jungle Kitty”, the party went into insanity as BeBe then performed live for the first time her hit “Jungle Kitty” (see Winner’s List below with their Fest Diaries).
“It’s rare to have so many passionate, talented LGBTQ+ international content creators in one space,” said Revry CEO, Damian Pelliccione.  “Over the fest, everyone became a family.   With the stories we share from around the world, truly, it makes you realize how our stories resonate with whatever part of the globe you are from.  That is the reason for this festival and for Revry – sharing our authentic stories from every corner of the globe!”
Out Web Fest asked the international winners and attendee’s to share their experiences at the fest in these Fest Diary Entries.
Out Web Fest Jury Award for Music
JUNGLE KITTY
BeBe Zahara Bebet (from Cameroon)
“It was an amazing weekend.  I was doing other press in NY and then flew to LA to perform at Revry’s Out Web Fest and world premiere my newest video “Jungle Kitty”, very exciting.  I loved how inclusive the experience was at the festival.  It’s important to show more visibility, and there was such a diverse group of artists with so much struggles, different kinds of walks of life and allies.   It was great to see other voices being represented and not be the only one to carry the torch.
There were creators from many countries – artistry is very universal, it is not a nationality thing. I love that fact.  So many amazing stories that need to be shared and the community needs to get behind these stories.   I’m humbled to work with Revry.  With their quality of the content, they give my work a platform and voice.
When I was writing “Jungle Kitty”, the bridge, it’s a frame of mind.  It’s that color of me that is unapologetic, ferocious, not allowing negative energy around me, but about being free and fun.  I don’t want to apologize, not for how I walk, talk or what…this is a universal message of owning our power.  People relate to that, and I’m happy people can feel that way.  To sing my song live on stage at Out Web Fest and see that reaction was really encouraging.
Revry and Out Web Fest have shown such incredible support for the work, and as artists, it is all about the support!”
Out Web Fest Audience Choice Award
INCONCEIVABLE
Rachel Kirkpatrick (from Canada)
“I just had the best weekend ever. It started at 4:44 am Friday morning when I woke up to take three trains, two flights and a cab ride to get from Vancouver, BC (Canada) to L.A’s 3rd annual Out Web Fest.  After 15 hours of travel I pulled up in my basic yellow cab wearing chucks and a hoodie to the swankiest hotel I had ever seen.
I left my toddler at home with my baby daddy (thank God for co-parenting) so more than being excited for a festival I was excited to only have to clothe, feed and bathe one person for the weekend (me).
I had a number of fantasies about what it would be like to be on the red carpet with cool celebs like Katie fucking Stuart. But none of those fantasies, had me being friends with everyone I met and had me feeling like I left a part of my heart in LA.
I felt like I was going to be a kid in a candy store around so many amazing collaborators and content creators that were way out of my league. But what I didn’t expect was to feel like a celebrity.  I was mostly just grateful and amazed that I got to actually talk to the organizers of the event, and that everyone already knew who we were.  That was utterly surreal.
I got to pitch to 22 Hollywood execs, a story about my life story, and some of them really loved it and gave me their contact info before I could even get through my pitch. I have about 6-7 execs now that I’m excited to establish a connection with.  That’s what I feel the weekend was about; connection.  There is something about sharing your story that is such a vulnerable experience, and when you are around others who are doing the same thing, you automatically meet each other at a level that is just really honest and raw. No one is trying to hide anything.
In this industry, things can be really cut throat and hard, but there was such a sense of humanity at the festival in the stories that we heard and the characters that we witnessed together which made the event have so much HEART. I feel nothing but gratitude for the weekend I just experienced and the LGBTQ2IA community at large. There were so many experiences that were represented on screen that I didn’t realize were shared.
I could not believe that Inconceivable won the Audience Choice award amidst such a talented line-up of series’. Winning was the icing on top of the cake of a perfectly balanced weekend of work and play. It really truly was an honor to be a part of this event. I can’t wait for next year! Thank-you so much Out Web Fest and the Revry team for making this happen and bringing this community of vibrant, and open individuals together. It was such a freaking blast.”
   Out Web Fest Honorable Mention
SEPTO
Alice Carvahlo (from Brazil)
“Being at Out Web Fest was a memorable experience from start to finish. My journey began in December 2017, when Revry CEO Damian Pelliccione announced on the stage of the City of Arts during the Rio Web Fest that SEPTO had been chosen to participate in the Out Web Fest with all expenses paid.
Hollywood is the center of the audiovisual industry.  It is where any creator dreams to be. The name itself, “Hollywood”, attributes like a stamp of quality. It is the reflection of approval in a global seal.  SEPTO participated in festivals in Asia and South America, but the United States was still a closed area for us, unimaginable (precisely because it is everyone’s dream).
From the region in Brazil we came from, it is not common to dream so high. In addition to the discrimination of race, gender and sexual orientation, we also face a daily kind of xenophobia against the culture produced in the northeast of the country. How to dream so high, living so far in a country so full of discrimination and having only two reais in the pocket?
The cold weather we felt throughout our stay was counterbalanced by the warmth of the people, the respect, the kind words and a festival full of diversity in every way. SEPTO was displayed on Saturday and the reviews were very positive.
Sunday, I was asked to announce the fest’s Audience Award (which includes an all expense paid trip to Rio de Janeiro for Rio Web Fest), it was as if I were living that December day again. The internet has brought people together and made dreams possible, whatever their size, and that is beautiful to watch…and to stream.
SEPTO was given an Honorable Mention at the awards.  And after all this, SEPTO returns home with a certainty: the strength of the cinema is really in the collective.  SEPTO will debut in June on Revry. This is the biggest prize!”
Out Web Fest Powerhouse Industry Pitchfest Winner
Timothy Chesney (from UK)
”My journey to LA from the UK nearly didn’t happen. On the way to the airport, me and my partner lost our luggage with our passports and tickets. Looking at each other in horror at the train station, our dream holiday to Los Angeles seemed impossible.  Skip forward a week and I’m in The London Hotel West Hollywood, pitching to industry execs that have been a huge inspiration to me and my career. Thanks to Revry and Out Web Fest, I had the opportunity of a lifetime!
In the U.K, I have recently been commissioned by Sky to write and direct a comedy called Charity Shop Sue along with my twin brother Matthew Chesney and longtime collaborator Stu Edwards. The show features an incredible all female cast starring Selina Mosinski and produced by Spool Films, and BAFTA winners Vicky McClure and Shane Meadows.
This is a really exciting point in my career and I feel extremely lucky that OWF Pitch Fest just so happened to be scheduled during my trip to L.A. The stars were very much aligned.
The top-level industry execs gave me some really valuable feedback on my project. My pitch was for an LGBTQ+ animated comedy show set in a dystopian fantasy world. An important strand of the show looks at non-corporeal identity. I brought business cards, a 1-page pitch, a 10-page pitch book and a 1-minute sizzle reel. You never know what people will think of your ideas. I did feel that they all understood how important this show is to me and my passion and drive to make it happen.
I also got chance to see all the other talented content creators that are part of the Revry’s Out Web Fest programming. It was moving to see such inspiring, brave and authentic work being created across the globe and brought together by Revry.  I can’t deny some pieces made me howl and others choked me up!
At the Sunday evening awards ceremony, me and my boyfriend were chatting with some other guests when I heard my name called out. I was knocked for six and completely didn’t expect to win. I am really looking forward to using the prize of a studio day at Shamrock Productions. I visited the studio recently and can’t wait to return to L.A and utilize the impressive facilities. My mind will be ticking until then to figure out making some magic in that space.
The whole experience has been fully empowering. This is a really important time for LGBTQ+ voices!  I can’t wait to see how we populate the film, TV and music landscape in the near future, with our original, and bold stories.”

STAGE FRIGHT
Levin Hübner & Fabian Wallenfels (from Germany)
When we received the invitation for Out Web Fest we didn’t hesitate to book our flights – for us small town boys from Germany, an invitation to Hollywood doesn’t come every day!
It always seems a bit boring to state the obvious. Anyway: First Night in LA. Of course we’re standing up there at the Griffith Observatory. And it’s magical: It’s our first time up here, yet we’ve seen this hundreds of times before, together with some of the biggest stars and directors out there. On first sight, LA is just a gigantic, shiny waste of electric power. But looking closer, you start to realize that it consists of millions of smaller lights, and almost all of them are on the move. What an adventure to be one of these small lights wandering through LA for some days!
We always felt that our web series Stage Fright is a universal story and it was great to see that notion confirmed by the American audience appreciating the show. This makes the LGBTQ subculture so special – it’s a community that overcomes borders and language barriers.
Watching the program of Out Web Fest was a tremendous joy – it really striked how the niche has been growing up in recent years and doesn’t have to shy away behind mainstream media. Digital queer content is all about good storytelling and interesting characters, providing a positive representation of LGBTQ life in our society. We were really honored to be selected in such a strong competition with our own web series Stage Fright, and to be part of the Revry family in this shiny city called LA!
It was a crazy trip, coming to LA from Germany for just a weekend, but it was worth every single one of five thousand miles (and even more in kilometers).

Synopsis Based on the hit 1992 film starring Sarah Jessica Parker, and Nicholas Cage, Honeymoon in Vegas tells the story of mild-mannered Brooklynite, Jack, who haunted by the fear of a promise to his dying mother never to get married, avoids proposing to his new girlfriend Betsy. He finally summons the nerve and takes Betsy to Las Vegas only to have his plans compromised by a dashing gambler with an eye for luxury and Jack’s new fiancée.
The New York Times called the Broadway production “[a] bright and bouncy…real-live, old-fashioned, deeply satisfying Broadway musical in a way few new shows are anymore.”
Honeymoon in Vegas— book by Andrew Bergman and score by Tony-Award winning Jason Robert Brown (Parade, Songs For A New World, The Last Five Years and The Bridges of Madison County) — ran on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre –this concert will see it performed in London for the very first time.
The 30-strong London Musical Theatre Orchestra will take to the London Palladium stage on 12th March 2017 under the baton of its first guest conductor, the show’s composer Jason Robert Brown, to honour the stylish and swinging score of Honeymoon in Vegas which marks another much anticipated UK Premiere for the orchestra.
Jason Robert Brown said: “Honeymoon in Vegas is the show I always aspired to write. All of these sounds – the swing, the samba, the disco, the boogie, the rock’n’roll – make up what I hear in my head when I think of what a ‘Broadway musical’ should be. I’m so gratified to have actually written it, and thrilled to get a chance – finally! – to present it in London. And to know that the music will be brought to life by the sterling musicians of the LMTO and a glorious cast is such a delight and a privilege. I’ve had so many sensational experiences in the British theater that it feels like coming home. I cannot wait to get started!”
In keeping with the long term aim of the LMTO, the fully orchestrated concerts aims to not only make orchestral performances accessible to brand new audiences, but also to bring the exciting repertoire of musical theatre to a more classical audience.
