Dick Halligan on "Holmes & Yoyo"
I was doing one of my occasional searches for anything new regarding the show (still hoping to one day be able to watch it in original English or find that one last TeleJunior comic I need to complete my collection) when I saw that the composer, Dick Halligan, had died in January this year. After a little research, I found that he'd written an autobiography called "Musical Being" published in 2013. Unfortunately, there wasn't a whole lot he had to say about working on the show's music, which is wonderful stuff BTW, but I did find this paragraph in the book:
I was also writing a lot of music for television in those years, mostly at Universal Studios. Coincidently, I was having lunch with my daughter one day in Venice, Ca., when I recognized a man walking by, who had been the star of one of the first TV series that I worked on, "Holmes and Yo-Yo". It was a terrible detective comedy show that aired in 1976 for thirteen weeks. This actor, John Schuck, played Yo-Yo, a partially mechanized Russian detective. I wrote comedy detective music, with synthesizer sounds suggesting his mechanical nature. That's what I remember anyway. It was an absurd way to make a living. I didn't say anything to him, fearing that he might probably be embarrassed by his association with the show. Maybe I would have too.
If you want to read his book, you can buy it here:
You can also read about his career here:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Richard Attenborough, Ingrid Bergman, my cousin-in-law Janice Brenneman, Kyle Cook (Matchbox 20), Chris Copping (Procol Harum), Reuben Councill, Charles Finney, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Diamanda Galás, Elliott Gould, Carla Gugino, Dick Halligan, Fred Holland, Michael Jackson, Nathan Ernie Lashlee, David Lim, John Locke, Tony MacAlpine, Bennie Maupin, John McCain, Sterling Morrison, Me'Shell Ndegéocello, Oasis 1994 DEFINITELY MAYBE album, Mao Oz, Wilhelm Hieronymus Pachelbel, Charlie Parker, Liam Payne (One Direction), Pebbles, Iggy Pop’s 1977 LUST FOR LIFE album, Cliff Richard’s 1958 “Move It!” single, Vivien Thomas, Consuelo Velázquez, Vishal, Dinah Washington, and my friend and early career mentor, composer-keyboardist-trombonist-vocalist Bob Hogins. He made his mark in the 1970s San Francisco music scene, most visibly with Harvey Mandel, Buddy Miles, and Santana. I met Bob after he’d turned his life over to God and devoted himself to classical and contemporary Christian music projects. He compelled me to up my game in musical discipline and expand myself as a bassist and singer.
From 1981-87 I played with Bob almost weekly in an eclectic church worship group. We fanned out into recording, pop-rock musicals, and playing in gospel vocal groups that shared bills with Zoe, a Grateful Dead spin-off w/Donna Godchaux and David MacKay (Ark, Michael Nesmith). As I worked with Bob in various projects, he introduced me to Buddy Miles, Pat Craig (Tazmanian Devils), Frank Souza, Marcus Uzilevsky, and other talents who’d affect my career in varying degrees. I feel indebted to Bob as a talented, warm-hearted musician, and great teacher.
Regrettably I do not have at hand any recordings of work Bob and I did, but here’s one of my favorite tracks that Bob played some sizzling organ on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_tgfWBHdig ...Meanwhile, HB BH and thank you for your amazing contributions to all of us.

Band blood sweat and tears songs popular
Tumblr media
The tracks on the album were arranged by Al Kooper, Dick Halligan and Fred Lipsius. “You Made Me So Very Happy,” appeared on the band’s second album entitled Blood Sweat & Tears. It also defines the importance of the arrangers who work on the albums. The Blood Sweat & Years recording of “You Made Me So Very Happy,” defines the brilliance of the band’s arrangements and song interpretations. The Blood Sweat & Tears version of the song “You Made Me So Very Happy,” was dramatically different from Brenda Holloway’s version. The song’s arrangement was pure Motown with that iconic drum and bass groove wrapping itself around the smooth Brenda Holloway vocal. It was originally recorded by Brenda Holloway and reached the number 39 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. “You Made Me So Very Happy,” was written by Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson and Berry Gordy. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. It is one of the band’s most well known songs. The song was released by the band in 1969. The Blood Sweat & Tears song “You Made Me So Very Happy,” was recorded during the David Clayton Thomas era. The great song “Back Up Against The Wall,” was released on the Blood Sweat & Tears album No Sweat. We open up our Top 10 Blood Sweat & Tears songs list with the horn’s blasting, guitars blazing and the drums pounding with a ferocious fever while that big band smacks you in the face and says “wake up,” it’s time to strut, boogie, run, jump, swing and everything that the music of Blood Sweat & Tears inspires to be. Our Top 10 Blood Sweat & Tears Songs list is an attempt to choose some of the band’s most essential songs while at the same time throwing in few surprises. Blood, Sweat & Tears Co-founder Dick Halligan Dead at 78
Blood, Sweat & Tears co-founder Dick Halligan died Jan. 18 in a hospital in Italy, his son said.
The trombonist, keyboardist, flutist, arranger and composer “ha(d) been feeling poorly for some time” before his death, Buddy Halligan said on Facebook.
“Most people know him as one of the founding members of Blood, Sweat & Tears and an accomplished film composer and musician,” Buddy Halligan said of his father, who was 78.
“While all of this was true, for me he was the one that raised me and my siblings and exposed us to an amazing amount of incredible music and musicians.”

Dick Halligan (left) on stage with Blood, Sweat & Tears
Halligan switched from trombone to keyboards after Al Kooper left BS&T and David Clayton-Thomas joined. He co-wrote songs such as “Lisa, Listen to Me” and left the band in 1971 after the release of B S & T 4.
“Dick brought a lot of joy into the world with his music and he will be fondly remembered and missed by so many,” Buddy Halligan said.

Having relied largely on outside songwriting for its last two wildly successful albums, Blood, Sweat & Tears decided (as many groups had before) to bring some of that song publishing income into the family by writing their own material. Singer David Clayton-Thomas contributed the Top 40 hit "Go Down Gamblin'," and he and keyboard player Dick Halligan collaborated on another chart entry, "Lisa, Listen to Me." Ex-bandleader Al Kooper even contributed a track, "John the Baptist (Holy John)." But Side two was given over largely to songs by guitarist Steve Katz that were substandard, and the band's cohesion seemed to be disintegrating. Although the album scraped the Top Ten briefly and went gold, it marked the end of BS&T's period of wide commercial success on records. By the next outing, Clayton-Thomas had quit and the band's heyday was behind it.

Blood, Sweat & Tears Co-Founder Dick Halligan Dead at 78 – Billboard
Blood, Sweat & Tears co-founder Dick Halligan, who won two Grammys with the classic jazz-rock band, died of natural causes on Jan. 18 in Rome, Italy. He was 78. Halligan grew up in Michigan and moved to New York for school, and as the story goes he first turned down his friend and jazz saxophonist Fred Lipsius when he asked him to join Blood, Sweat & Tears. But, Halligan changed his tune and…
