Dicki Hoppenstedt is a character in a few sketches by German comedian Loriot (1923 - 2011) portrayed by Katja Bodganski in 1978.

Their gender is never revealed, as the family only refers to them by name, and when the grandfather, portrayed by Loriot himself, tries to find a Christmas present for them, the saleswoman tries and fails to determine if Dicki is a boy or a girl:

O: "Haben Sie Spielzeug? Für mein Enkelkind zu Weihnachten?"

G: "Do you have toys? For my grandchild for Christmas?"

V: "Und was darf es da sein?"

S: "And what is it you want?"

O: "Es muss ein bisschen was..." *macht Faust*

G: "It has to be a little..." *makes a fist*

V: "Wie alt ist denn das Kind?"

S: "How old is the child?"

O: "Ungefähr so" *zeigt die Höhe*

V: "Junge oder Mädchen?"

V: "Na Sie werden doch wohl wissen ob Ihr Enkelkind ein Junge oder ein Mädchen ist."

S: "Surely you must know whether your grandchild is a boy or a girl."

O: "Wieso?"

G: "Why?"

V: "Wie heißt denn das Kleine?"

S: "What is the little one called?"

O: " Hoppenstedt. Wir heißen alle Hoppenstedt"

G: "Hoppenstedt. We are all called Hoppenstedt."

V: "Und Der Vorname?"

S: "And the first name?"

O/G: "Dicki. Dicki Hoppenstedt."

V: "Und es... Es ist ein Mädchen."

S: "And it's... It's a girl."

O: "Ne."

G: "No."

V: "Also ein Junge."

S: "So it's a boy."

O: "Ne ne ne ne ne."

G: "No no no no no."

V: "Ja was denn nun?"

S: "Well what is it now?"

O: "So genau kann ich das nicht sagen"

G: "I can't say it that precisely."

V: "Wie ist es denn angezogen?"

S: "What is it wearing?"

O: "Trousers. Blue trousers."

V: "Na vielleicht haben Sie's ja auch Mal ohne Höschen gesehen."

S: "Well, maybe you have seen it without trousers once."

O: "Nein, wozu denn? Sagen Sie mal, was für ein Laden ist denn das hier eigentlich?"

G: "No, what for? Tell me, what kind of shop is this?"

V: "Ich bitte Sie! *An die anderen Kunden* Ich habe den Herrn nur gefragt, ob sein Enkelkind ein Junge oder ein Mädchen ist."

S: "Oh please! *To the other customers* I merely asked the gentleman whether his grandchild is a boy or a girl."

V: "Wenn Ihr Enkelkind ein Zipfelchen hat, dann müsste -"

S: If you grandchild has a Willy, the it should -"

O: "Zipfelchen?!"

G: "Willy?"

V: "Mein Gott dann hat es eben kein Zipfelchen..."

S: "My God, so it doesn't have a Willy."

O: "Mein Enkelkind hat alles was es braucht!"

G: "My grandchild has everything it needs!"

To be honest I too only just realised and had to share it somewhere.

Weihnachtsgeschichte nach Loriot: Weihnacht

Das kennt fast jeder in Deutschland: Weihnachten mit den Hoppenstedts. Diese Geschichte ist die erste in unserem neuen Buch; “Früher war noch mehr Lametta”.

Diese Geschichte, eigentlich eine Art Theaterstück mit Vati und Mutti Hoppenstedt, Opa Hoppenstedt und dem 8-jährien Kind Dickie war die erste aus dem neuen Buch, die ich Frau M. vorlas.

Es machte mir viel Spaß, in die verschiedenen Rollen zu…
