Identifying Skeletons from Drawings
Okay, Paleonerds, I need help. I've been going through every piece of Paleomedia I can get my hands on, logging them, and trying to ID as many of the prehistoric fauna as I can.
Today, I hit a hard one.
Tumblr media
This art is from the 1996 BBC Documentary "Life & Earth", and while the Mesozoic fauna is easy enough (Pteranodon, Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Didelphodon, Elasmosaurus), the Paleogene (Or Early Tertiary one as was known at the time) is a lot harder.
I mean, there's more to ID and a lot of it is small.
Still, I was able to identify Gastornis, Barylambda, and Palaeochiropteryx.
There are probably a few ungulates, carnivorans, creodonts, primates, and multituberculates that are just a wash.
If anyone knows what the things are, or better yet, the art piece this is from, let me know!

A long, long time ago, back in the Carboniferous, one species of little amniotes was split in two. As their paths diverged, one group’s descendants became the sauropsids - such as reptiles, birds, and other dinosaurs - and the other group’s descendants became the synapsids - such as therapsids, cynodonts, and mammals. As the millions of years stretched on, our two clades have shared the same planet and lived alongside each other as each evolved into ever new and fascinating forms.
(in every panel, there’s a sauropsid on the left and a synapsid on the right)
-In the Permian, a Titanophoneus looks up in wonder as a Weigeltisaurus glides overhead.
-In the Triassic, a Coelophysis and a Kataigidodon cautiously share a bite of a large piece of carrion they both found.
-In the Jurassic, a Maiopatagium glides around a feeding Mamenchisaurus, hunting the insects attracted by the huge sauropod.
-In the Cretaceous, a Didelphodon captures a young Bambiraptor.
-In the Paleogene, a Picavus rests for a moment on the head of a Paraceratherium.
-In the Neogene, a Titanis hunts a Cormohipparion.
-In the Quaternary, a human gives her pet cockatiel scritches.

Although most Mesozoic mammals were rather small, a few different lineages produced some pretty hefty-sized forms – most notably the metatherian Didelphodon, the gondwantherians Adalatherium and Vintana, and the eutriconodont Repenomamus.
And now we've got another one to add to that list.
Patagomaia chainko lived towards the end of the Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago, in what is now Patagonia near the southern tip of South America. Known from some partial leg and hip bones, it was potentially the largest known Mesozoic mammal yet discovered – estimated to have been similar in size to a modern bobcat, roughly 50cm tall at the shoulder (~1'8") and weighing around 14kg (~31lbs).
Distinctive anatomical features of the bones indicate it was an early therian mammal, the group that contains both modern marsupials and placentals, but it can't currently be classified any more specifically than that. Mesozoic therian fossils are very rare in the southern continents, so Patagomaia's presence in late Cretaceous South America adds to their known range and diversity, as well as providing an example of surprisingly large body size for the time.
Without more material it's impossible to tell what Patagomaia's ecology was. I've gone for a fairly generic life appearance here, and while what's known of its joints and muscle attachments doesn't indicate climbing specializations, plenty of unexpected tetrapods still like to get up on tree branches.

T. rex Madness Round 3: Walking With (Mother T. rex) vs. Fossil Specimen (Sue FMNH PR 2081)
Tumblr media
Walking With (Mother T. rex) – Long before Hank and his clan swam across the sea, this mother T. rex tried her best to rear her young among the dangers of the late Cretaceous. She manages to protect her nest from an egg-stealing Didelphodon, resulting in three babies successfully hatching. All does not go well for the runt of the litter, but the other two get to show their curiosity, much to a local snake’s annoyance. Sadly, unlike in Prehistoric Planet, the end of the story for this T. rex family is not a happy one. After the mother is killed defending her babies from an Ankylosaurus, the asteroid arrives, ending the age of the non-avian dinosaurs.
Tumblr media
Fossil Specimen (Sue FMNH PR 2081) – Arguably the most famous of all T. rex specimens. Discovered in 1990 through impressive luck and observation by the fossil’s namesake, Sue Hendrickson, Sue is also one of the best T. rex fossils, being 90% complete by bulk. Following a lengthy dispute over ownership, Sue was put up for auction, inciting fears that the fossil would end up in a private collection. With the help of various donors, Sue was purchased by the Field Museum in Chicago, and has been a fixture there ever since. Sue’s bones show signs of various injuries, including a parasitic infection in the skull. In 2018, Sue was moved to a new room at the Field Museum, featuring an updated assembly and an informational exhibit featuring the world in which Sue lived.

Time for a quick big-brain thought
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know that I’ve made an entire hypothetical scenario for how a third PHP season would go last year, along with how the series itself hasn’t mentioned in any major announcements as of late, but what if this hypothetical third season had a major theme with its episodes?
As in, instead of using habitats as the themes, why not go with entire locales instead? Maybe this could be the show going back to some of its most famous settings before closing things out, but I feel like having future episodes focus on an entire location instead of a single biome in general could be an interesting way to deal with running out of compatible habitats. Hell, it could be a good way to not only introduce new species, but also bring back certain animals from past episodes. I know this is a little bit far fetched, but hear me out.
Nemegt (Basically the Nemegt Formation and the surrounding area)
Old Species- Tarbosaurus, Mononykus, Deinocheirus, Tarchia, Prenocephale, Barsboldia
New Species- Gallimimus, Udanoceratops, Saurolophus, Conchoraptor, Adasaurus, Brodavis
Patagonia (The southern part of South America, with places like the Allen, La Colonia, and Cerro Fortaleza Formations being found there. Areas like Chile could also fit)
Old Species- Carnotaurus, Dreadnoughtus, Austroraptor, Secernosaurus, Mortuneria (if we wanna continue with the idea of them being South American residents)
New Species- Maip, Stegouros, Aerotitan, Gondwanatherium, Sektensaurus, Noasaurus
Madagascar (Basically what it says on the tin)
Old Species- Majungasaurus, Rapetosaurus, Beelzebufo, Simosuchus, Adalatherium, Masiakasaurus, Madtsoia
New Species- Facatakely, Mahajangasuchus, Sahonachelys, Rahonavis, Vintana
Tethys (The European archipelago and surrounding sea, with places like Hateg Island, France, and even a small bit of Morocco being examples)
Old Species- Hatzegopteryx, Zalmoxes, Mosasaurus, Telmatosaurus, Barbaridactylus, Diplomoceras
New Species- Squalicorax, Ampelosaurus, Ocepechelon, Gavialimimus, Gargantuavis, Rhabdodon
Laramidia (Yes, I am aware that this could be like “North America” again, but with place like Hell Creek, Prince Creek, Ojo Alamo, and even parts of the inland sea that was still present at the time, there’s plenty of material to work with, even moreso than NA)
Old Species- T. Rex, Triceratops, Quetzalcoatlus, Alamosaurus, Edmontosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Pectinidon, Pachyrhinosaurus, Nanuqsaurus, Prognathodon, Hesperornis, Xiphactinus
New Species- Ankylosaurus, Anzu, Habrosaurus, Lonchidion, Thescelosaurus, Borealosuchus, Basilemys, Didelphodon, Bravoceratops, Bonnerichthys, Hydrotherosaurus
Is this a rather odd and ridiculous idea for a third PHP season that might not happen? Yes, yes it is. But, like with my of my other ideas and projects on here, it’s one that I wanna share to get input on.

If Jazz had a prehistoric alt-mode, it'd probably be a Didelphodon. Didelphodon was one of the earliest mammals, and one of the first mammals that could actively hunt the young of most therapod and non-therapod dinosaurs. They were large, by Mesozoic standards, marsupoid mammals that used the cover of darkness to hunt.
They also supposedly nurtured their young, at least by current scientific theory.

Didelphodon
Дідельфодон (лат. Didelphodon) – рід великих (для свого часу) сумчастих ссавців, що жили в крейдяному періоді (верхній маастрихтський вік, 70,6-66,0 млн років тому) на території сучасних США і Канади.

It's been a while since I've drawn any dinosaurs, hasn't it? Time to rectify that.
This is a small collection of animals from the Hell Creek formation, for the most part. A few of them are a bit iffy, like the alvarezsaur and the rhamphorhynchid. Come to think of it, I think the latter went extinct in the Jurassic. The reference used was Saurian's Field Guide to Hell Creek, but I wasn't aiming for the absolute most accurate. Just something to keep my hand in after a little dip.
From top to bottom using their heads: a juvenile Tyrannosaurus, Thescelosaurus, an ornithomimid, Acheroraptor, Didelphodon, Palaeosaniwa, Pachycephalosaurus, an alvarezsaur, Anzu, big ol' frog, Champsosaurus, Pectinodon, a bord, Triceratops, and Denversaurus.
Like the Underdark monsters, there's also a transparent version as a sort of coloring page, if you'd like here. Just make sure to tag me so I can see it!

TRM Round 1: Theodore Rex (Theodore Rex) vs. Walking With (Mother T. rex)
Tumblr media
Theodore Rex (Theodore Rex) – In this direct-to-video, Razzie-nominated buddy cop comedy, humans and anthropomorphic dinosaurs coexist in a bizarre alternate future. Naturally, in buddy cop tradition, Whoopi Goldberg and Theodore Rex are mismatched partners who have to solve a series of murders leading, of course, to a billionaire trying to create a new ice age. If I’m allowed to editorialize here, I’m going to stick with Roger Rabbit.
