One thing I found neat about your scrapnik covers is that the Jack Lawrence variant for issue 4 that you colored goes in the complete opposite direction color wise from your A covers
Good eye! I colored Jack's cover a few months after I painted my 4 covers, and figuring out the color scheme stumped me for a little initially because red was such a prominent theme for me. After experimenting with several color schemes, I realized it was better to treat it as separate from issue 4's story, instead go for more of a representation of the whole miniseries, and go in the green stormy direction like how the beginning of scrapnik starts. Ironically, that made it work pretty well for the trade cover haha.

honestly one monster design I was always fond of (though they only appeared in a small handful of games) were the Doodles, which were one big reference to the japan only Tecmo arcade game Ganbare Ginkun (the japanese version of the first game you could even get one by putting in Ganbare Ginkun's OST; while one of the /??? breeds could be gotten from Parappa Rapper, though said variant wasn't actually Parappa themed)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To obtain a Doodle in Monster Rancher 1, raise a purebred Monol to Class C or higher and raise its Fame up to 85+. Then bring it to a Rank E battle and the Fame will drop down to around 50. Afterwards, the Monol will get graffitied (becomes a Scribble) and Holly will freak out. Combine it with any other monster for Doodle.
This is so goofy holy shit. Gotta admire how these games really did have mew under the truck.

I was thinking about your posts about snowgrave/the weird route from a while back and thought of something: back with the 2022 Status update right before the Spamton Sweepstakes, it's mentioned that if you recruit certain characters they'll form a band and change the background music to the Castle Town to a new track (My Funky Town). Now the characters shown in the band are 2 members of Sweet Capn Cakes, Tasque Manager, and a previously unseen shadowman enemy. Now think about the members from chapter 2; Tasque Manager and 2/3rd of Sweet Capn Cakes. These are guys that can be recruited even if you do the weird route (SCC join you no matter what, they just won't be able to open their shop as a sound test unless you recruit every enemy, while Tasque Manager can still be fought and recruited even on a weird route). In other words, as far as we currently know, doing the weird route won't screw you out of My Funky Town
An interesting thing to note! Like I wrote before, a lot of the Horror of the Weird Route comes from the fact that you don't actually face any consequences - and I guess that includes also being Allowed to have a Funky Town!

I'm done; this whole time I've been like "I don't recognize the pride flag Paula's wearing in that one pic and can't find anything about it" but then I just looked up FamilyMart for the first time
Yeah it's just the Family Mart colors, but to be honest it also looks a lot like the flag of Sierra Leone

SPOILERS!!! REFERENCES AND EASTER EGGS IN F&C ep. 3: Cake the Cat
Tumblr media
The dungeon that Finn and Jake are crawling in the opening scene looks very similar to the Temple of Thorogon from an unproduced episode that would have been part of season one of the original show. Spotted by @digamma-f-wau.
Tumblr media
This is the Finn and Jake we saw in the trailer! They are indeed from an alternate universe where Jake survived.
Tumblr media
Minerva makes a cameo. She arrived in Ooo during the montage in the finale of the original series.
Tumblr media
This is the two-headed duck from the original show's title sequence.
Tumblr media
This is the butterfly from the credits of Simon Petrikov, the second episode, where it was resting on the mask of the bear that Finn slew.
Tumblr media
The non-flying squirrel and the other animals who try to kidnap him and bring him back to their cult are from Up a Tree. Finn also ate the same kind of cursed apple in that episode as Cake.
Tumblr media
The Ice Thingdom already looks a lot like it does in the 1000+ scenes.
Tumblr media
These kinds of universal translators were first seen in My Two Favorite People. This one has more voices and seems more advanced, but the three voices from that episode can briefly be heard; demon, alien, and old man.
Tumblr media
There are lots of returning species in the market scene; hot dog knights, soft people, wood people, rock people, spiky people, slime people, cuties, berry people, goblins, cloud people, and several of the characters from Memories of Boom Boom Mountain. The girl playing the guitar is Rainy from the episode Another Way and it's possible the tree stump playing the woodblock is meant to be the one from that same episode.
Tumblr media
There's a worm here who appears for like five frames and looks like Shelby.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure why the hot dog knight got Prismo-teleported away.
Tumblr media
Astrid mentions she was born in the new human city, which means she is twelve or younger, and means it didn't take long for the city to be constructed after the humans arrived in Ooo.
Tumblr media
The dream in this episode's credits is a truck full of apples with a wheel missing. I wonder if these mean anything.

apparently Daniel Warren Johnson has confirmed recently in one of his youtube videos that he's stepping down from doing the art after issue 6; though he is still writing. I wonder who's taking his spot and if they're here to stay or if they're gonna cycle artists with each volume
i'll definitely be sad to see him step back from regular art duties since i love his art so much, but maybe if we're lucky some of the alternate cover artists will step up to do interior art. we have had some really great covers already
also i'm sure whoever's drawing it dwj will continue to insert at least one wrestling move into every issue's script lmao

okay so the funny thing about that anon; Cats Millionaire (it's been a long time since she's gone by that handle) is one of the many brony musicians to have contributed to SLHRPG, doing the song "Fluttershy's Plan To Get Super Ripped" (which plays in Fluttershy's cottage). and get this; it ended up being one of the few SLHRPG songs to have been carried over to SLARPG, with no changes (outside of the title replacing Fluttershy to Melody).
oh SWAG that rules. fuck yeah.

Finally getting around to playing Moon (bought it for my switch a while back but didn't actually get around to playing it until recently) and it's interesting seeing how much the gameplay loop basically went unchanged with Chulip (never played but did watch a let's play of). Like there's one completely fundamental change (the time limit is replaced with a health meter) but there's a lot of very specific analogues like the Underground Residents being Chulip's equivalent to Moon's animals. Makes me wonder how closely Endonesia and Giftpia (the other two Moon spiritual successors from it's other two designers) stick to Moon's formula or if they deviate more; Endonesia's "The protagonist must communicate with the island's 50 sealed gods in order to return home" sounds almost like an animal/underground resident analogue, while Giftpia apparently has an equivalent to the MD system with Nanashi FM.
I noticed the similarities too when I played through them back to back with my girlfriend a couple years back.
You can see how the loop of "solving each monster's puzzle in order to avoid the damage of killing them" was extrapolated into UNDERTALE, too. Like I had no idea how much Moon was in UT until I played it.
Chu♡lip is interesting as a follow-up to Moon because thematically it's a lot less ambitious but also the difficulty curve is SO much steeper. I think the first 3-5 hours of Moon are remarkably well paced/scaled, like there is a lot of good teaching going on. After that point theres a sudden spike that makes it hard to reccomend, but Chulip OPENS with a spike, and never really gets easier... (the amount of time it took me to do the factory... 💀)
But yeah it's cool to track those devs as they influence project to project. With the designers and the art leads you can really feel their strong voice (like with Tingles Rupee Land)

One thing interesting about Fionna & Cake and it being a half hour show; is that it's not that there's 2 4-person board teams (and an extra floating boarder), but rather there's 4 2-person board teams with 2 teams per episode. The distinction seems moot at first, but now you got a shuffle with this week's episodes, with one of the teams previously on the odd-numbered Ryann-directed eps (Hanna K/Anna) being on the even-numbered Steve-directed Jerry, and vice versa with Iggy/Graham on The Star, with the other teams (Jacob/Sonja on The Star and Jim/Jackie on Jerry) remaining where they were (other than Jackie replacing Lucyola)
Oh, yeah, that is pretty interesting! (Also the much smaller number of boarding teams compared to Regular Adventure Time certainly helps F&C feel a lot more thematically and emotionally consistent from episode to episode)

Back when F&C was first announced, it felt like the biggest green flag to even the most skeptical fans was that Adam Muto was gonna still be showrunner
YES!!! i hesitate to attribute adventure time's successes to One Person because i can only assume it takes some concerted team effort to continually strike the balance it has, but the series has undoubtedly flourished under muto's supervision. that was certainly a relief to see. :)
