Citrus' Art Summary 2021!
Here it is, my year in art! Overall, I did more digital art this year than any other year previous, managing about one major piece per month. Finally a year when I can fill in all those squares (and then some!)! That's a-bonkers-lot for me :O
Some more reflection 'neath the cut:
I set out with the goals this year of Doing Lots of Art Digitally for practice/learning purposes and also working with deadlines in mind, kinda maybe sorta... like a real professional might? Just to try it out?? Of the stuff I finished, two were for a zine (hmm, never did post those, though you can see most of the full-color piece in February!), three were paid work (blurred/not pictured, I don't really feel comfortable sharing those), one was a t-shirt design (not pictured), one was for an art giveaway (June), 10 were sketch requests (March-May), 7 were for Tumblr events (all digimon-related; July-October), 7 are for a personal project that I really won't be giving many details about (Nov), and 10 were index-card-sized pen-and-ink practices. Oh, and if we're counting ALL creative/fandom stuff, I wrote a fanfic and made a fanmix. Phew!!
I'd like to say I enjoyed every minute of it, but some of it was sort of stressful, actually ^^; I DO have a full-time job; my self-imposed artistic workflow made it feel like I was working two jobs sometimes, and that DEFINITELY took a toll on me (particularly since I was trying to meet all those deadlines!). I also tended to get wrapped around the axle being a perfectionist a lot of the time, which led to me to spending a LOT more time fiddling with not-actually-that-important stuff than I probably should have (this is a constant struggle for me!). TL;DR, there are still TONS of things I could afford to learn about being a more efficient/less neurotic artist, and, in hindsight, I think I was teetering on the verge of burnout several times throughout the year (oops).
One positive thing I did was upgrade from MangaStudio to ClipStudio this year, and while there there are things I miss about my old setup, I really like that you can download new brushes directly from Clip, as well as some new functionality I discovered that I had never figured out previously (or maybe it didn't exist?). I also realized I need to make major improvements to my posture, break-taking, and overall drawing setup. I tend to hunch over a lot and that has made my back and shoulders pretty unhappy a lot of the time, particularly when I'm in deep-focus and work-hard mode :P
I'd also like to... draw more for myself next year? Taking requests is a lot of fun (and I still have several in my inbox that I'd like to finish, WHOOOOPS), but sketching for myself used to be something I did to relax and unwind, and I realized it's not really relaxing if I'm drawing with the intent to post for an online audience. I also really want to make more progress on my Personal Project now that I've started it properly! So I'm anticipating my perceived art output will be a lot lower next year, for all these reasons, and that’s OK! Art goals for next year involve a) working on self-care and recovering from what-very-well-may-be burnout, b) jamming as much as I can on Personal Project and things I will probably never publish on the Internet, c) WORRYING LESS about small details & audience when I DO draw/post goofy fandom stuff, and d) remembering how to draw spontaneously and for fun. Fingers crossed these are achievable goals!
In terms of my personal favorites for the year... well, that's tough! I like them all for one reason or another. I REALLY liked how my December piece turned out; I think I nailed it (I really wish I could show it!!). And I'm also really proud of how the Daisuke Kaiser comic turned out. I got to play with some fun screentone brushes, and it's an ACTUAL (short) MANGA-STYLE COMIC that I finished, for once. Finally makin' comics!! Secretly, THAT'S THE DREAM!!! My teenage self would be so proud.
It'll be interesting to see what 2022 brings!

SPOILER. Aside from the fact that the following image will cause several “artists” on the internet to go “Tentacles? Clones? That is my jam, hold my pen” in the next week... What if...
Tumblr media
... WHAT IF THE REASON WHY TAICHI HAS ALWAYS BEEN AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME WAS THAT HE WAS A C L O N E???
Okay, it absolutely doesn’t line up, because he and Koushirou were constantly seen communicating and Toei won’t do something like this, but it would at least explain why he always came out of nowhere...
... Or maybe these are all Taichis from the different timelines??? Which makes even less sense, but I have compared Digimon to Madoka before, so what gives.

GET TO KNOW ABC’S: MUN EDITION
a .  age : 21 b .  birthplace :  Eastpointe, MI c .  current  time :  4:20 PM (Yes, really.) d .  drink  you  had  last :  Water e .  easiest  person(s)  to  talk  to :  Ooh, a hardball! Hmm, I’m going to put @kunaiflourish and @kingressentiment as the most easy tempered people I know. Offline? I have to say @m--joy! f .  favorite  song(s) :   As a music addict, I’m not sure how well I can answer this one, so I’ll just list a few. Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”, Janis Joplin’s “Me & Bobby McGee”, Billy Joel’s “Piano Man”, Dragonforce’s “Body Breakdown”, and Green Day’s “Novocain”. h .  horror  yes  or  horror  no :   *Shrugs* Psychological horror, but I’m not really into movies. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors, though? Haha, I guess he counts!
i .  in  love ? :   Not in the slightest. Oh, but I have a paternal love for many of my worms and digimon I raise?
j .  jealous  of  people :   It’s hard not to get jealous of everyone’s skills from time to time... k .  killed  someone :   No. l .  love  at  first  sight  or  should  i  walk  by  again ? :  The concept of love is terrifying to me. You might have to walk by over a hundred times and talk to me about it first...
m .  middle  name :  Lauro n .  number  of  siblings :  One brother and one more recent step-brother o .  one  wish : ...That’s a hard one. While there’s something I’d obviously want to choose, I think my biggest wish would be to have more courage. ...Either that, or the ability to shapeshift and change my form at will. q .  question  you’re  always  asked :  ...I don’t really have a standard question that people ask me, bar the whole ‘how’re you doing?’. That question’s always my pet peeve due to the fact that I don’t know how to answer it most of the time. r .  reason(s)  to  smile :  The feeling of putting paint on paper, having that one friend to talk to after a long and rough day, monster raising games like Monster Rancher or Digimon, Listening to that one good song, and that great feeling of accomplishing something you’ve been working so long on. Oh! Another two would be getting a reply on an RP and flexing the nib of a fountain pen. s .  song  you  sang  last : Uh... Good question? Honestly, I sing so much that I tend to forget things like that... t .  top  3  fictional  characters :  ...This is another one of those evil questions... Probably Alphonse Elric and then half of the Persona cast? u .  underwear  &  color :  ..I’m not starting this debate again. But? Boxers > Briefs
v .  vacation :  I don’t get to go to many places outside of Michigan, but the most interesting place I ever traveled to was London to march in the 2015 New Years Day Parade. Uh, if this is dream locations, then I’d love to check out a bunch of nature spots and museums, as well as visit friends!
w .  when’s  your  birthday :  September 13th! I was born on a Friday the 13th, like most of my family. x .  x - rays :  The most recent X-ray I got was for my two knees. Nothing like getting images of how your bones don’t fit right and having a doctor telling you that even surgery’s a 50/50 shot when it comes to making sure your kneecaps don’t slide all over the place and sublux, eh? y .  your  favorite  food :  I’m very partial to homemade Lasagna as well as Chicken Chimichangas at this one restaurant I love. z .  zodiac  sign :  Virgo
Tagged by: @kunaiflourish apparently told the whole dash to do it...

Writing His Tune (Digimon Prompt fic)
Tumblr media
Characters: Yamato/Matt | Setting: After the Show
Rated: T
Prompt: "A different kind of Lapse-lock. No using any of the letters: L, O, C, K" [ Word Goal: 200 | Actual: 211 ]
-Adventure 01: After the Show-
The band's time at the venue was up, but Matt was impassive. He sat at the stage's edge, pen and paper in hand. His handwriting was a mess, but in his eyes, they were transparent and definite at best. His mind remained as bright as the sun, whirring with new ideas, phrases, and verses that awaited their engraving against the empty white pages, then pushed up ahead and transversed with a sweet tune.
"Hurry up, Matt!" his bandmates said, but he was indifferent as he stared at his fresh imprints, hearing his genesis as stanzas singing in his mind as his pen extended its stride. The band shared their disdain, hidden under Matt's awareness, and departed the venue en masse.
His stare remained fixated ahead, his hand writing with intensity and speed, and then-
The stage's beams dimmed. Matt set his pen and paper at his side, his writing seized by this pause. But his next musing was an immediate triumph in his mind. He snapped his fingers in the unstirring hush, then he tapped his hands against his seat with a unifying beat beside his divine ideas. As he sang his tune then, he swayed with his snaps and his taps, finding treasure in the timbre that his mind inspired.
A/N: You bet your bottom dollar my brain was in knots after writing this.
This was Candy #04. More from Candy Basket: [ AO3 | FFN ]

So I did the “get to know me” meme on Twitter but because of how Twitter functions now it’s a hard to follow mess of a thread. Decided to post it all here -- and hey, if any of ya’ll are curious, feel free to read.
1) When I was 10 my abusive stepdad threw a spray at me. I ducked -- it scraped my head. Sent to school bleeding b/c he was too stoned to realize it'd get noticed and I'd get pulled out of that environment immediately. This moment changed my life, left a scar on head.
If I hadn't ducked, would've hit my stomach. No cut. Whole childhood would've been different. My first Butterfly Effect Moment.
2) I started writing fiction about Pokémon. First-person, from the Mons perspective. Rotating point of view each scene.
3) I moved on to crazy crossover fanfic where I constructed an entire war, personal and political motivations, so many ideas I still like?
4) Part of this involved detailed drawings of Mario-themed Keyblades I wish I still had.
5) Paper Mario 1&2 are some of my most influential inspirations. expanded such a simple world so much so fluidly. (Harder than it looks)
6) When I was a kid my sister would wake me st like 6am to watch dubbed Sailor Moon. Bothered me they all sounded like same person.
7) I can recognize voices very well and even specific sounds and songs. Couple years back my roommate ran a test - playlist of 100 NES tracks, he'd play the first NOTE, singular, and I could recognize exactly where it was from if I'd played the game.
8) My first computer was a PC I bought w/$ saved up during an entire summer of custodial work in HS. Had no Internet.
So I'd use the public library's very slow connection to download things to floppy disk and copy them over.
Eventually, I was able to graduate to a USB. Obtaining music was hellish so I treasured each song I could download -- most from OC Remix.
9) We had this tiny rabbit ears TV that could get WB and Fox sometimes if it was set up in a specific corner of my sister's room
And so I would desperately use it to try and stay up to date on Pokémon and Digimon, it was so bad
10) Teen Titans was arguably the most influential piece of media for my teenage mind. It formed the base of so much I care about re:stories
Fleshed out, varied protags who grew together and each had their times to step up and step down. Action w/character dev context.
Fantastic themes important for growing humans; awesome moments "between the panels" instead of all comic book melodrama and action.
Then everything changed when TT GO attacked and pissed on everything smart and thoughtful because MONEYYYYY
11) Cowboy Bebop was the first "good" anime I ever saw and blew my mind open about what animated stories could do -- i.e. Not just kid stuff
I don't like "anime" in general because most of its common tropes but the shit out of me even worse than most western toon tropes
And yet like 50-75% of my most favorite shows ARE anime because thoughtful animated storytelling has so much potential.
11) I predicted months before Last of Us came out that you'd play as Ellie but when it happened I had to stop, cry happy tears.
I predicted the second I saw the Left Behind trailer what was going on w/those two and again, still had to stop and cry happy tears.
(I seem to have pretty good gaydar now but I also don't like, ship everyone together all the time)
It just hits me so hard when actual canon queerness happens in mass media and is done well, but we're still so bad at following through.
12) Favorite m/m ship: Troy and Abed in the Morning. Favorite w/w ship: Max and Chloe BFF Pirates 2008.
ATLA ships: Tokka the most, also Katang, also Smellershot. ATLA makes me more open to shipping than any other series?
Like, Zutara makes me feel kinda gross and some of the crack ships like Sokka/Azula scare me but otherwise I'm pretty chill w/ATLA ships?
13) When I was a kid, and we'd role play, I always wanted to play the girl characters. I was surrounded by boys so they always were weirded.
It was weird to me, too, honestly.
Now it makes perfect goddamn sense.
14) Apparently I was kidnapped as a baby by some mobster or something but it's hard to tell with my mom what's real or not.
15) Smash Bros. Melee was the first game I ever got genuinely hype over before launch. I still remember being startled to discover it --
-- existed via E3 trailer on GameTrailers back on my goddamn dialup connection in 2001. I had to wait all fuckin' day for that thing to load
And when it did, it was GLORIOUS (and had FZero music, which at the time I did not recognize) and I was FLOORED.
The screenshots made the game look too good to be real, and I was instantly sold on the GameCube, the first time I NEEDED new hardware Day 1
I got SSBM as an Xmas gift before my grandpa's GCN present arrived, so for a week or two all I could do was stare at the box/manual/disc
That game kind of changed my life -- SSB64 was the first time I'd gotten so invested in a multiplayer game, and SSBM crushed it.
A fire was born in me -- competition, something I'd never been much interested in w/games before, not against actual humans.
Those months between E3 2001 and finally getting to play SSBM felt like forever. And thus did I post online fiction for the first time.
That's actually how I met @SDiDuro , my first 'Internet friend' and what I'd consider to be my first proper 'reader.'
16) After college, I ended up working at a call center because it was  the only job I could find and I needed to support my disabled wife.
DURING college, I gave up on writing fiction and had focused on gaming editorial through a site where I'd engaged with an online community
But that empty space between phone calls eventually got filled in by writing fiction on a notepad, with a pen, inspired by Street Fighter 4.
Eventually, this evolved and radically changed into what is now (still in dev) DownRight Fierce.
Back then, I had no idea I'd be motivated to DO this, though -- write original fiction -- but the fire had been re-lit.
I wanted to write.
I was sickened by my "naive" adolescence crossover fics and wiped them from my http://FF.net  profile and started anew.
Having just come off of ATLA 1st time, I knew I wanted to explore that world/characters more, so I wrote a story about Toph & puberty.
That serving as "practice," I then went on to write SRU, and...well, that...changed EVERYTHING.
17) My biological dad (who I have never met) has OCD, to the point where he apparently washed his skin raw trying to avoid germs?
So as soon as I showed enthusiasm in gaming, my parents FREAKED and worried I was exhibiting OCD and they brought the hammer down.
They made me feel BAD for writing about video games when I wasn't playing them, but they never READ anything I fucking wrote.
Even now, my mom tries to comment on what a good writer I supposedly am, yet when I ask for her thoughts, I ask what she's read?
Silence.
I wasn't writing fiction based on games because I was THAT addicted to games.
I did it because a storyteller was awakening within me --
-- and I told stories through the worlds and characters I was familiar with.
(And my first genuinely "serious" fic was Teen Titans, anyway)
But even now, it really hurts that my parents will sometimes try to guilt me over not calling or whatever the fuck, when they never READ
never supported, and actively DISCOURAGED my writing, my storytelling, refused to understanding why I loved games.
18) I never watched Avatar until after college (years after it had finished), and I watched it because of the live action movie.
I watched halfway through the season 1 of the cartoon to get "read up" on it. Then the movie. Which was horrible. Then the rest of season 1.
At that point, the movie utterly baffled me. My wife and I proceeded to marathon the rest of the series. And it became my fav story ever.
But I ironically owe it to that terrible live action movie. ^_^;;
19) My taste in music is really weird. I couldn't tell you what my favorite genres are, and even fav musicians is hard.
Like, every year my top three fav musicians "change" because I just add more to the pile and spend the year focused on their music.
But music inspires my storytelling more than any other medium, I'd say -- in terms of me actually planning and growing ideas.
I didn't just give Nishiko and Seiko last names of my two fav game composers as tongue-in-cheek. In fact, that's not why I did it at all.
I gave them those names because I wanted some element of their very design to express how Japanese composers inspired me in my teen years.

Haluuu~ your art is really pretty and has inspired me to try taking up drawing c: may i ask for tips you have on a beginner or one who has never picked up a pencil for drawing? :D tenchuuuu ♥♥
hi hello! my tip would be to never put that drawing pencil down again even if your life depends on it!!
haha but okay, what i told myself when i first started out was i gotta get used to those drawing tools. sketch or scribble anything on a book or computer, either is fine, until you're comfortable with them. honestly, it took me more than a week to get used to my pen tablet, so don't be afraid to play around for as long as you need to!
i also used to pick certain parts of different series that i liked and tried to draw them over and over again. for example, i really liked the shoes in digimon (specifically hikari's) and i kept drawing until i was used to it. i used to (and still do) draw shirt collars the way one of my senior in high school did because i found it easy to understand. a breakdown of various things to experiment on gives you more range to practice with. i think it'll naturally flow for you after that as you move on to greater things like guidelines, anatomy and expressions. nowadays youtube is also a convenient platform to watch people draw and learn from them too.
i hope that helps as a start and hope you'll always be inspired to keep going! thank you so much for this super cute message and sweet compliment! i definitely apprECIATE IT A LOT T__T thank you!! ❤❤

Goals 2017
It’s that time of year again! The time to write out and share with the anonymous public all of what will likely be failed promises!
Read on if you’re curious about both my writing and personal goals for this year. :D
Writing Goals
→ Update A Boy and Girl Affair
Suffice it to say, I will be happy if I update this story even once this year, or publish SOMETHING that takes place within its universe (I have a lot of slice of life ideas for it but have not put forth the energy to write them since they don’t move along the plot (does this collection of stories even have a plot?). Pray for the survival of this collection, guys. Really. It’s approaching extinction.
→  Get halfway through Stop the Presses
The more I plan out and write for the this story, the more it’s endeared to me. Maybe it’s the college AU setting. Maybe it’s working with a new set of characters. Maybe it’s the premise. Maybe it all boils down to, really, Little Shit Takeru. Whatever it is, I really want to see this story progress and succeed. Whether or not I’ve bitten off more than I can chew is another matter.
→ Begin revising Plus One
I mentioned this in my Goals 2016 review post, but to reiterate, Plus One is going to be undergoing major changes. I’m still on the fence about leaving it up on fanfiction.net since every time I look at it, my eye twitches (well, not all the time, but often enough), but it will not receive further updates (unless the writing deities strike me with lightning). It is not easy to give up on a story prematurely, but I’m not happy with it at all. I can’t write for something that I’m not proud exists. I really do apologize to all fans of this story in advance. If you are fans of Taichi and Hana in general, there is no lack of material there, but in this setting, their story (and Tai and Catherine’s story), will be left unfinished until I sort out my shit. :C.
→ Plan out my Daiyaken fanfic
This was moved from 2016 since I didn’t really touch on it. Though, I figure completing this will be much easier with Stop the Presses in the works since both stories feature the same main set of characters (namely your Adventure 02 kids). Maybe I’ll even start writing for it? Who knows, but definitely stay tuned!
→ Write a One-Shot
I’ve realized I haven’t written any independent one-shots lately. There’s been a story idea floating in my head about doing a modern-day Ken/Rosa fic (yes, that Rosa from the Digimon World Tour arc). Of course, knowing me, you know I’ll add my own twists to the story. Plus, while I’m pretty sure having that bit in the anime was a joke and no one ever writes Ken/Rosa fanfic, I thought it’d be an interesting concept to explore amid the sea of Daiken and Kenyako.
→ Continue working on my closet-Taichi-related fics and sharing snippets, but not posting them
Why would I not publish any progress on these? Or at least make the commitments official? Because I want to take my time with these plotlines, and they are all (at least in my eyes), big undertakings. So they wouldn’t be handled the same way I handle A Boy and Girl Affair, for example. Most of these projects are being transferred from 2016, and I have them detailed out in that post if you all are interested.
Personal Goals
→ Continue Ballet
So, I’m upping my game on this one by taking not one class, but two. And provided I do well in one, I can audition for a program that is a bit more intensive, so... looking forward to this! Wish me luck! Hopefully I can channel some of Hana’s skill, oui? :P
→ Take voice lessons
Now, I’ve sung in a choir for a couple of years in college, but I am by no means a singer. I like to sing, and I sing all the time in the car, and I make up tunes and jingles about my dog (like, really. You want me to spontaneously burst out into song, you put a dog in front of me), but I think it’d be neat to get some proper training on voice. Depending on how things go, I may even share with you a clip of what I sound like, but that’ll only be if I feel very confident, very brave, or very drunk.
→ Explore the city more
I live in the greater metropolitan area of some major cities, and despite having lived in this area all my life, I do not know these cities very well. I am suburban as suburban gets, but suburbia can get incredibly stale and stunting to the creative mind. Also, there are more places to eat in cities. FOOD.
→ Take a yoga class
Whyyyy am I all like FITNESS FIRST LADY RAH? I don’t know, really. Maybe it’s because I’m realizing I’m getting old and my metabolism isn’t what it used to be and one of my greatest fears is weighing over a certain amount, so... that may contribute to all these active goals. But yoga would help with flexibility, which would then help the ballet, so it’s beneficial all around. Also, I’ll do anything to delay leaving my workplace at exactly 5pm. Traffic is a bitch.
→ Journal daily
I actually tried this last year for a time, and in reading over the few entries I did, I was in a really bad state. Every single entry somehow always went back to the same problems and how I wasn’t good enough and was essentially a worthless piece of shit. (Last year was bad, guys. Really. I cried so many times driving home from work because it sucked that bad.) BUT, I’m realizing now the importance of chronicling even the day-to-day, because well... brain cells are dying and while I do my share of crosswords, good memory won’t hold forever. The hard part will be to make it a habit. We’ll see.
→ Volunteer more
I did a few community outreach initiatives with my old workplace and found them some of the most relaxing and rewarding activities ever. Like, it feels so good to not only be doing something that helps people, but it takes your mind off of yourself and your problems. I’m not saying don’t address your problems ever, but fixating on them (which I definitely did last year) was no help either. And well, who wouldn’t want to help others out for a couple of hours a day, once every month or so?
→ Start running again
Recycled this one from last year. hahaha. Hopefully I don’t injure another toe.
→ Try some handlettering
I’m really fascinated by handlettering and calligraphy, guys. Like, I want to be more crafty and hands-on and I already have an obsession with pens so... why not? Plus, it’s so pretty! :D
And those are my goals for this year! Trying to be more realistic with my writing goals, but I may have been too ambitious with my personal ones. Welp.
Let’s see what the future brings!
Cheers,
Aveza
