Carrie Mae Weems
“My work endlessly explodes the limits of tradition.”
Weems uses her own persona to “respond to a number of issues: woman’s subjectivity, woman’s capacity to revel in her body, and the woman’s construction of herself, and her own image.” (Weems, quoted in Carrie Mae Weems: The Kitchen Table Series (Houston: Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, 1996), 6). Weems, or rather her protagonist, inhabits the same intimate domestic interior throughout the series.
Tumblr media
Carrie Mae Weems (American, b. 1953). Untitled (Woman and Daughter with Children) from The Kitchen Table Series, 1990. Gelatin silver print, 27 ¼ x 27 1/4.
Her works centre around the same dining room table and single hanging light. The downlighting focuses on the subjects at the table, honing in on the story they tell together. The series of photographs from The Kitchen Table Series has a continuous elements of the main "protagonist" Carrie herself. They appear as an externalisation of an internal dialogue of personal experience.
The image above in particular has the portrait subject still with the other supporting subjects blurred in movement which a really dynamic frame. It looks similar to how some scenes in moving image present time passing by with the main character standing still among movement.
In other images I found these isn't sitting in the centre but sometimes standing behind the light or sitting at the side of the table. Some photos she engages with the camera but most she doesn't and is otherwise engaging or observing the other subjects in frame.
This is an interesting approach to a series of photographs to tell a story, particularly in the sense you can tell quite a complex narrative with the same setting and lighting. For variation, changing the angle or height of the camera, change in focal length, range of focus and changing frame position.

Ghosts of Market Square
by Fiona Broome
They say everything's bigger in Texas. And when it comes to ghosts, that may be true. Downtown Houston boasts more than one hundred haunted house. It has an entire haunted block-namely the 800 block of Congress Street.
It all started in the mid-1830s, when Pamelia Mann came to town. People whispered that she'd been a popular prostitute in New York City but had to flee after she caused mortal injury to a rival by pushing her down the stairs. They also said she'd shot a customer when she ran a brothel in New Orleans, and had to leave town when she learned her victim was the son of a politician.
So when Mrs. Mann opened a "boardinghouse" called the Mansion House hotel on the corner of Congress and Milam streets, people expected a good, if risky, time. They weren't disappointed. In a time when Houston had only a couple of two-story buildings and most its residents lived in tents, the Mansion House offered a dining room serving elegant meals on real china with German silver cutlery.
Upstairs, customers could enjoy clean beds with feather pillows, and the company of an attractive women . . . for a price. Pamelia's "girls" were among the most celebrated in Texas. Legend has it that even Susanna Dickenson-she who went down in history as one of the few survivors of the Battle of the Alamo, during which she was widowed-was among the Mansion House's "ladies."
The customers were equally noteworthy, and included congressmen, army officers, and Tonkawa chiefs. Sam Houston-for whom the city was named-was a regular guest.
As the city of Houston grew, the Mansion House expanded to meet demand. It was a huge success. At the end of 1838, Pamelia Mann's tax bill was the third highest in Houston. By 1840, she had bough most of her city block and the block across the street, opening a livery and other businesses. As the city grew, this area became the commercial hub of Houston known as Market Square.
Pamelia was famous for her wit and her wild ways. She almost always carried a knife, a gun, and had used both on several occasions. In fact, she had a remarkable police record, but also friends in high places. In 1839, she was found guilty of forgery, a hanging offense in Texas. The day after she was sentence, the president of the then Republic of Texas, Mirabeau Lamar, pardoned her, and the notorious Mrs. Mann was set free.
Unfortunately, nothing could save her from yellow fever. In 1840, just a few months after the death of Pamelia's fourth husband-a man only six years older than her eldest son-the legendary madam succumbed to the deadly disease.
The parties at Mansion House continued after Pamelia's death, as the "hotel" changed hands several times. And even though the Mansion House closed its doors by the early twentieth century, its parties aren't exactly over.
Enter the Ghosts
About twenty years after Pamelia Mann's death, John Kennedy-a baker from Ireland-bought a quarter of the block that had been home to the Mansion House. The land brought him luck, as it had Mrs. Mann. Kennedy opened a steam bakery and he was soon one of the most successful businessmen in Houston.
When the Civil War began, he leased one of his nearby buildings to the Confederacy for an ordnance depot. As a result, Kennedy's bakery served hot biscuits to hungry Civil War soldiers, adding to his business. The Congress Street site was also a Pong Empress station, an Indian trading post, and the "mission" from which Kennedy distributed missionary named Father D'Asti.
Perhaps Kennedy had a premonition when he donated land for St. Vincent's Cemetery, the first Catholic graveyard in the city, considering that in 1878 he was shot dead at the front door of his bakery. Since then, things have changed at Market Square. The Mansion House was replaced long ago, after a fire swept the block in the 1850s, trapping countless people inside the buildings. According to local lore, looking for the warm welcome and boisterous parties.
Although new businesses have opened on the northeast corner of Congress and Milam streets, many wasted no time in closing their doors. The ghosts are very picky about who stays in the neighborhood.
It is said that Pamelia has been spotted strolling down Congress Street after dusk in a white gown. She's also been seen in "men's attire." Late at night, her girls sometimes appear at upstairs windows, apparently unaware that the building where the Mansion House once stood now houses offices.
The Haunted Wine Bar
A few doors away, John Kennedy's brick building still stands at 813 Congress Avenue. It is not only listed in the National Registry of Historic places but also Houston's oldest bar, oldest commercial building, and oldest structure on its original plot of land. Kennedy's former bakery is now the home of La Carafe, a comfortable wine bar named one of Men's Journal 50 Greatest Bars in the United States. More recently, the Houston Chronicle described it as "one of the prettiest, most unique bars in all of Texas."
It's definitely pretty-and uniquely haunted. In addition to memorable red and white wines, La Carafe provides other kinds of spirits.
A few La Carafe's ghosts are surely Pamelia's former customers, including Sam Houston. But one of the wine bar's favorite ghosts is Pamelia Mann herself. Pamelia may not have had a fancy indoor plumbing when she owned the Mansion House, but she revels in it now. She's most famous for visiting the ladies room in the businesses around Market Square, especially at La Carafe. This has earned complaints from guests who want to enter the restroom yet have to wait for Pamelia to leave. It seems they don't realized that she is a ghost.
The former baker and owner of the building, John Kennedy, supposedly pays regular visits to La Carafe as well. He sometimes appears as a dark figure just outside the bar or around the first floor. He has occasionally been seen climbing the stairs, wearing a fedora and a Sherlock Holmes clock-style coat. Witnesses report that Kennedy is more often a fleeting shadow seen out of the corner of the eye.
Psychics and ghost hunters frequent La Carafe, most of them sensing the haunting but comfortable energy. Many guests describe the ghosts in detail from their impressions and sightings. Photos around the stairs and near Gladys Burrell's portrait often reveal ghostly orbs of spiritual energy.
At least one visitor attempted to cleanse the energy in the bar. After he lit a smudge stick (safe incense, reportedly a spiritual purifier) and successfully smoked the downstairs, the smudge stick went out, and then wouldn't relight upstairs.
Despite the smudge stick, ghosts have remained in the brick building. Apparently, they like La Carafe and wish to enjoy the popular bar as much as its patrons do.

Houston's Pest Calendar: When to Expect and How to Protect
Welcome to Cypress Creek Pest Control's blog, where we're committed to keeping Houston homes and businesses pest-free year-round. In the sprawling metropolis of Houston, understanding the seasonal patterns of pests is crucial for effective pest management. In this blog post, we present "Houston's Pest Calendar," guiding you on when to expect specific pests and providing expert tips on how to protect your space.
Spring: March to May
Pest to Watch: Ants and Termites
As temperatures rise, ants become more active, marching into homes in search of food. Termites also begin swarming during the warmer spring months. To protect your property, conduct regular inspections for signs of termite activity, and seal entry points for ants.
Protection Tips:
Keep food stored in airtight containers.
Fix any water leaks promptly to prevent termite attraction.
Schedule a professional termite inspection.
Summer: June to August
Pest to Watch: Mosquitoes and Cockroaches
Houston's hot and humid summers create the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Cockroaches are also more active in warm weather. To enjoy your outdoor spaces and keep your home roach-free, implement effective mosquito control measures and maintain a clean living environment.
Protection Tips:
Eliminate standing water to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
Use mosquito repellent and install screens on windows and doors.
Keep kitchens and dining areas clean to deter cockroaches.
Fall: September to November
Pest to Watch: Rodents
As temperatures cool, rodents seek shelter indoors. Houston homes often become targets for mice and rats during the fall. Seal any potential entry points and consider professional rodent control measures to prevent an infestation.
Protection Tips:
Seal cracks and gaps in your home's foundation and walls.
Keep food sealed and stored securely.
Set traps or use bait stations strategically.
Winter: December to February
Pest to Watch: Bed Bugs
While Houston's winters are relatively mild, bed bugs remain a concern. Increased travel during the holiday season can contribute to the spread of these pests. Vigilance and preventive measures are key to avoiding a bed bug infestation.
Protection Tips:
Inspect hotel rooms and luggage during travel.
Wash bedding regularly in hot water.
Seek professional assistance if bed bugs are suspected.
Year-Round: Termites
Termites are a year-round threat in Houston due to the region's warm climate. Regular inspections and proactive measures are essential for termite prevention.
Protection Tips:
Schedule annual termite inspections.
Keep wood, including firewood, away from the foundation of your home.
Invest in a termite protection plan for long-term defense.
At Cypress Creek a reputed Houston Pest Control in TX, we understand the unique pest challenges faced by Houston residents. If you need professional assistance or have specific pest concerns, contact us today. Let's work together to keep your Houston property pest-free in every season.

Creating a Family-Friendly Kitchen
Tumblr media
While gourmet and entertaining kitchens certainly can be outfitted with family-friendly features, some households focus entirely on creating a space that works for the hectic daily lives of everyone who lives there. This means accommodating children who might fix their own after-school snacks, a parent who needs a space to organize meals and activities, and even pets that eat in the kitchen.
More info about Kitchen Remodeling Houston.
Interestingly, many homeowners plan kitchen remodeling projects around their holiday plans, says Nancy Divita, showroom manager at Trevarrow Inc. “That’s the time they want to show off their cooking because it brings joy and validation,” she says. So if keeping side dishes warm while the turkey roasts is typically a pain, they might justify installing a warming drawer, for example. But keep in mind as you choose features for a family kitchen, the real value comes from space planning and cabinetry features that improve how the kitchen functions every day.
And, remember those children grow, and a kitchen remodel should last at least 10 years. “You want the kitchen to be adaptable so it will work for having kids around the house and empty nesters,” says Mary Jo Pierce, principal, Mary Jo Pierce Inc.
Before you begin your kitchen renovation, seriously review how you use your current kitchen and set goals for your remodel. This way, you can stay on track as you make important decisions about floor plan, appliances, cabinetry and more.
Features:
Easy-to-clean surfaces. Wipeability is key with family. Quartz surfaces, a man-made product, are durable, not as porous as natural stone (so less likely to stain). For budget-savvy households, laminate is available in a variety of colors and patterns that can even emulate granite. It’s not the real deal, so don’t expect to fool home buyers if you put the house up for sale. But it does stand up to spills. When choosing materials, consider their forgiveness if glasses are carelessly clunked on the countertop. For example, glass tile is not shock absorbent; and quartz cushions impact better than granite.
Accessible pantry. Storage for groceries is a top concern for families, and the “consumables” zone often doesn’t get the attention it deserves during planning, according to Blum, Inc., a producer of cabinet hardware. Pantry cabinets with drawers that fully extend make it easy to reach items. Perhaps children have designated pantry drawers that are lower and contain parent-approved foods. “Promoting self-sufficiency in the kitchen and healthy eating habits is important to consider,” Pierce says. “If you can, make it easy for kids to make the things they like to eat.”
Open plan. The kitchen and living room are practically synonymous in a family’s home. One should flow into the other, and the lines between the two are getting more blurred. “The whole point is to build this beautiful kitchen that is user-friendly, but now you have to have those comforts that you used to have in your living room,” Bergin says.
Snack bar. Features like an island will multi-task in a family kitchen, serving as a snack bar, dining area or place for children to do homework while a parent prepares dinner.
Refrigerator drawers. Refrigerator configurations that include separate drawers are convenient for families that stock specific items for children, giving them permission to help themselves to food in the kids’ drawer. Also consider point-of-service refrigerators placed in convenient zones—even mudrooms.
Convection microwave. Speaking of multi-tasking in the kitchen, this microwave works double-time as a device for reheating and cooking, and a fast-speed oven. “A microwave can take up a great deal of real estate in the kitchen, whether installed over an oven, in a pantry or built into cabinetry,” Divita says. “The ability to use the microwave as a real convection oven takes the use of that microwave one step further. It acts as a small oven, which saves you money as opposed to putting in a double-oven.”

who: alexander & megan
where: stockholm, sweden
when: 03-11-2023
alexander: alexander had lost count of the days that megan had been in sweden with him -- she'd joined him not that long after their valentines weekend and hadn't left yet. he loved all the time he was getting to spend with her, and found himself always wanting him around. before megan he'd never really been into the idea of keeping someone around for long, but alex never felt a connection with anyone else as he felt with her. he knew he was going to hate when she had to leave, and that right there made him realize he wanted a lot more from her than what they'd already been doing. they'd gone on a lot of dates since she joined him in sweden, and had a lot of nights in as well -- and alex attempted to surprise her with a couple of things to put a smile on that beautiful face of hers. but tonight he wanted to go all out and give her an amazing night since that's what megan deserved. which is why he booked a private dining date for the two of them at operakällaren, had his sister help him buy the perfect designer dress for megan to wear, and splurged on a couple of dozen of megan's favorite flowers. alex dressed to the nines himself and could feel the eyes on he and megan as they had walked into the restaurant and lead back to the private room that alex had rented. and he was pleased as they walked into the private dining room because there were more of megan's favorite flowers are strategically placed throughout the room and they decorated in what he had learned were megan's favorite colors. alex gave the hostess a pleased smile and thanked him softly, before turning to look toward megan with a raised brow and a smile. "so does this surprise beat the other ones?" alex had been honest that as long as he was making her happy, then he was happy and that's exactly what tonight was about, making her happy.
megan: megan had also lost track of her time spent in sweden, an unintentional part of the plan for the houston based rapper, who had been in the nordic country for nearly a month; enjoying what surprises alexander lavished her with while getting to know the actor on a deep and intimate level. megan unable to stop herself from falling for him as the days and nights blurred into one extended adventure. something she never wanted to end but knew eventually would with their busy schedules. and like alex, megan had never felt so strongly about a person and was hopeful that things would turn out even more seriously for them both. her instincts telling her so as she dolled up for the night in a custom made gown, accessorized by her favorite flowers. when it came to romance, alexander nailed it every time. and as they ventured into the private dining area, decorated to her exact tastes, megan couldn't help but smile, kissing alex on the cheek afterwards. “yes, you've really outdone yourself.”
alexander: alex didn't really know why he had the feeling, but he just knew she'd be leaving sweden soon and he wanted to make sure to send her off with an amazing night on her mind. he knew that she had a busy schedule, wasn't sure when they'd be able to see each other again, and while he wasn't that worried about her forgetting him, he just wanted to make even more of a lasting impression. alex would be lying if he said he hadn't been falling for the rapper, because he was. which was something he'd never expected given he'd always been content in hoping from one relationship to the next, never wanting to allow himself to commit to anyone since commitment had always been scary to him. alex wanted more with megan, he even wanted to introduce her to his son, which was something that he never thought would happen. but he didn't want to introduce her to him until they took that next step, until they became official and that was another part of why he'd set up tonight. alex had always been romantic and he wanted to really make sure megan felt special tonight, because she was special, beyond special if he was honest. and he loved the smile he'd put on megan's face when she walked into the room, smiling softly as she pressed a kiss against his cheek. "good, because i wanted this to be a special night, beautiful." and alex can't help but press a quick kiss to her lips, before moving towards the table to pull out her seat for her and have her sit down.
megan: their time together had almost come to a close, megan booked and busy throughout the tail end of march, unable to determine when the next time they would be able to see each other like this would be again; so freely and nonchalant. not that megan wouldn't make time to visit alexander if her schedule allowed, she just wouldn't have weeks to do it. and was sure the same could be said for him. which was why she also longed to make this night memorable for them both. megan envisioning a future where she could introduce alexander to her friends and family as someone special— vital to her happiness and lifestyle. megan had also hoped, that maybe, possibly before she left, they could make things between them official. since she felt that's where their relationship was headed. “me too.” she quietly laughed, melting into the kiss, desiring more of them but opting to sit at their table. megan anxious but excited for what to come.
alexander: while alexander didn't have to start his project yet -- he still needed to stay in sweden for his son, since he'd admit that he didn't see him near enough as he'd have liked to since his mother had him with her family a lot. but alex would admit that if she wanted him to come to something, he wouldn't think twice about traveling to wherever she was and be on her arm, even if it was only for a night or two. he wasn't going to like saying goodbye, but he had a feeling megan knew that if she needed him, he'd be there. and that was what this night was about, he wanted to make it clear what she was to him and hoped that he was the same to her, though he had a feeling he was. alex had been vague about their relationship when talking to his family, hadn't even really said she was there with him when asked -- but he wanted to change that, he wanted to be open about what she was to him. in fact, he wanted to be open and admit that she was his girl, something he never thought he wanted before, but megan was different. alex smiled at her quiet laugh and when she seemed to melt into the kiss, and he could have kept kissing her but knew they'd start bringing out the courses soon. once they were both sat down, alex still reached out over the table to grab her hands and give them a squeeze. "so there was something i wanted to talk to you about before they start serving us." he stumbled over the words slightly, more nervous than he could ever remember being in a long time.
megan: megan knew alexander's son was his ultimate priority hence all the extra time he had spent in sweden, not to mention that this place was his home and megan, being as understanding as she was would never undermine or jeopardize alexander's relationship with his family. seeing as she was so deeply rooted in her own. most importantly, megan knew that if she really needed or rather, wanted him there; wherever that may be, alexander would make it happen because that's just the type of man he was. her man, if she were being honest. megan biting her lips every time the thought came across when speaking to family and friends, wanting to tell the world that she had finally met a partner worth a damn but keeping hush until it became official. and judging by the elaborate set up and the way he held onto her hands so delicately, far more anxious than she's ever known him to be. megan could guess that it would happen tonight. which only made her more excited, though she tried to remain nonchalant about the whole ordeal. “oh boy, sounds serious. hope you havent decided to get rid of me.” she teased, caressing his knuckles with her thumbs while staring lovingly into his intense gaze. he was so handsome, megan inwardly thought, blushing lightly.
alexander: alex had been thankful for megan's understanding nature when it came to his son, thankful that she had never questioned when he had to leave her back at his place so he could see him. as soon as they became a real couple, alexander would introduce the two of them. even though his son was just shy of eight months and likely wouldn't have a clue, he still wanted the two to meet since they were the two most important people in his life. he was thankful that megan had the same importance of family as he did, and that she understood why he needed to stay in sweden more often than not. that didn't mean alex wouldn't do anything and everything to make a long distance relationship work with her if that's what needed to be done -- but first and foremost he needed to ask to make sure she wanted was the same thing as what he wanted. he smiled at her across the table though, attempting to fight any nerves that he was feeling and losing. and from the way she was smiling, he could tell that she knew he was nervous about something because this was unusual behavior for him. alex let out a laugh though at her words, giving her a wide boyish grin as she started to caress his knuckles. "not a chance would i be stupid enough to get rid of you," he stated honestly and lifted one of her hands to press a kiss against it. he kept his eyes locked on hers and his smile grew soft at the loving expression behind her eyes, though the smile only grew bigger when he caught her blushing. "but no, what i wanted to talk about was us becoming an official couple, you being my girlfriend -- i've never really asked someone to be with me officially, so if i'm not doing this right.." he starts to ramble then trails off. it's why none of his so called relationships never lasted in the past, because he could never offer a commitment, but he wanted one with megan.
megan: of course, megan wanted the same things as alexander; the rapper unable to contain her excitement whenever around him. megan feeling like a high schooler all over again because of it. and she wasn't the only party affected, meg touched and greatly humored by his boyish charm and shy nature upon bringing up the topic of them and their future, which she more than understood. “ I thought so but wanted to make sure.” she winked playfully, leaning closer to admire the blonde under the dim, romantic lighting. and as his lips ghosted acrossed her nimble fingers, meg could feel her whole body flush under his influence. this man could make her do anything or so it seemed. “is that so? well, there's a first time for everything and I, for one, think you're doing okay.” meg whispered lowly, offering him sincerity with her response. “and since I'd hate to make you sweat soooo much…the answer is obviously yes. I'd love to be your girlfriend.” grinned meg, waiting to seal the deal with a kiss.
alexander: alexander was glad they were on the same page it seemed -- and he always liked when she said teasing things because he often told her that he liked that megan kept him on his toes. it was part of why he was as drawn to her as he was because she was like no one else that had ever entered his life. it's why tonight had to happen the way it did because she deserved something special, megan deserved the world in alex's eyes. alex let out a low laugh at her words and just shook his head. "i think i've made it plenty clear i want you around, beautiful," he teases as she leans in closer and their eyes stay locked on each others. he didn't miss the way she reacted to the kiss against her fingers and he just grinned a little, always loved the way he could affect her. alex laughed again "i don't feel like i'm doing okay, i feel like i'm being a fumbling mess," he replied honestly as he waited for her to respond to his question. even though alex was sure what she was going to say, he couldn't help but be nervous. alex let out a relieved breath he hadn't even realized he was holding when she said yes that she would, and he didn't even say anything just quickly leaned forward and pressed their lips in a searing kiss. the only thing that made alex stop was the sound of someone clearing their throat, but as he slowly broke the kiss he waved them off and said they needed a few more moments before his eyes settled back on megan again. "you've made me pretty happy tonight, beautiful, though you've been making me happy since the valentine's ball so i can't say i'm surprised."
megan: conversations with alexander were always easy, megan a fan of their playful banter and the nonchalance alex carried when bearing the brunt of her jests; laughing whenever he fired back with his own. it was a comfort she didn't realize existed or missed until he strolled so effortlessly into her life and now, megan wanted that peace surrounding her all the time. “I know but I wanted to hear you say it again. stroke my ego.” she then laughed, basking in his affection as her heeled foot rubbed against his muscular calf. megan determined to make alexander as equally hot under the collar as she. “you are a fumbling mess but you're my fumbling mess.” megan remarked, cupping his face as their kiss turned even more feverish, only stopping once it became clear they were not alone anymore. megan quietly giggled, feeling barely any shame as alexander dismissed their server for a few more minutes in lustful privacy. “funny enough, I was thinking the same. you know, I haven’t stopped smiling since.” she whispered against his lips.
