Scented Salt Dough Dinosaur Fossils! Monday, June 1st, is International Dinosaur 🦖 Day! Are you ready?! I know that, in the UK, many schools and nursery’s are set to reopen on Monday. But, if yours isn’t, or your little ones aren’t going back, you could give this a go instead? We made our very own dinosaur 🦕 fossils out of this fabulous, extra-Sensory, scented salt dough (using flavoured tea, instead of water and a teaspoon of cinnamon - it smells delicious!). We used a two-piece dinosaur and skeleton cookie cutter to make the design (though, this could also be done just by pressing a small dinosaur toy into the dough to make a simple imprint), dried them out in the oven and then used small sponges to paint them with acrylic paint. The sponge painting method meant that the paint just stayed on the top of our ‘fossils’ and left the ‘bones’ of our dinosaurs clearly visible. We used a mixture of greens, browns and yellows for an ‘authentic’ fossil effect! For extra-Sensory fun to stimulate all those budding palaeontologists out there, you could also try hiding your fossils in sand and digging them out! Use small paint brushes to, carefully dust the sand away, just like a real palaeontologist! (great for those fine motor skills!) You could also print or write out the names of the dinosaurs used and use pictures of them ‘unfossilised’ to extend the activity and make a fun matching game! Have fun!
