The Enigma of Phaistos – A Mysterious Disc No One Can Read

On the sunlit hills of southern Crete, at the ruins of the ancient palace of Phaistos, Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier made a discovery in 1908 that continues to fascinate and puzzle scholars over a century later. Unearthed from a chamber once used as a palace archive, a round terracotta disc, unlike anything seen before, came to light. This artifact—now known as the Phaistos Disc—remains one of archaeology's greatest mysteries.

The disc is like a time capsule from a forgotten world. Both sides are covered in a spiral of stamped symbols—45 distinct signs representing human figures, animals, plants, and tools—that spiral inward toward the center. The symbols resemble writing, but their language and meaning remain undeciphered. The text is divided into 61 symbol groups, possibly “words,” but attempts to identify the underlying language—be it Greek, Hittite, Semitic, or Minoan—have yielded no definitive answers. Interpretations range from religious hymns and calendars to astronomical charts, legal texts, board games, or even messages from the lost civilization of Atlantis.

The discovery of the disc elevated the archaeological status of Phaistos, previously overshadowed by the better-known sites of Knossos and Agia Triada. It was found in Room 8 of Building 101, alongside a clay tablet inscribed with Linear A—suggesting the room served as a kind of archive.

The Phaistos Disc is generally dated to the middle or late Minoan period, around 1800–1625 BCE. Some researchers suggest it could be slightly later, from 1500–1400 BCE. While it’s widely believed to be of Cretan origin, the unique nature of the object and some of its symbols hint it might have come from elsewhere. For instance, one symbol resembles a plumed helmet used by the Philistines, and another depicts a sarcophagus reminiscent of Lycian styles.

A major clue supporting the disc’s authenticity emerged in 1955 when archaeologist Doro Levi discovered a seal in the same palace with a symbol identical to one on the disc—Sign 21. As this symbol is not known from any other context, the seal provides strong evidence that the disc is genuine and was likely made in Phaistos.

The disc measures approximately 16 cm in diameter and 1.6–2.1 cm in thickness. Its method of creation—symbols impressed into clay using stamps before firing—makes it the oldest known example of movable type printing. The stamps were likely made of wood, bone, or stone, and the clay was intentionally fired, unlike most Minoan-Mycenaean tablets that hardened accidentally in fires.

Despite many attempts, no interpretation of the disc’s contents has gained widespread acceptance. Some believe it’s a hymn or a prayer, possibly addressed to a mother goddess. Linguist Gareth Owens proposed in 2014 that the disc contains a dual-sided prayer—one side for pregnant women and the other for women who have just given birth. Repeating words like iqe and iqekurja may, according to Owens, refer to a goddess or "expectant mother." His hypothesis, like all others, remains unproven.

Beyond linguistic approaches, there are interpretations based on symbol counts and groupings. Some researchers have abandoned the idea of language entirely, proposing that the disc is an astronomical calendar, a tool for calculating eclipses, or even a board game. The number of symbols makes it unlikely to be an alphabet, but also too few to be a purely ideographic writing system.

One of the most striking features of the Phaistos Disc is its uniqueness—no other similar artifact has ever been found, either on Crete or elsewhere in the Mediterranean. While a few objects, like the spiral-inscribed lead disc from Magliano, Italy, or a gold signet ring from Knossos, show superficial similarities, the Phaistos Disc stands alone.

Perhaps one day, more discs or related texts will be discovered, providing the key to unlock its mystery. Or perhaps it will remain silent forever, a beautiful puzzle from a lost world. Until then, the Phaistos Disc continues to captivate scholars, adventurers, and dreamers alike—an echo from a civilization that still guards its secrets.

Pre-operative Hook-wire Localization of Thoracic Spinal Level for Intraspinal Pathology Requiring a Single Level Laminectomy

Abstract

The accurate localisation of the levels of the thoracic spine is important to minimise surgical trauma to the spine and soft tissue, as well reduce the possibility of spinal instability especially if bone is removed extensively to enable better exposure. The availability of techniques to minimise the need for exploration of multiple levels would go a long way in overcoming these problems. We reviewed other presently employed methods of localisation such as traditional intraoperative fluoroscopy, skin marking using radio-opaque material and dye, and computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based spinal navigation system. We describe here a method of pre-operative marking of thoracic spinal level using hook-wire under CT scan control which is a simple technique for accurate identification of the level for surgery. The patients are placed prone on the CT couch. Following the performance of scouts, axial images using a spiral scan (5mm thickness with a pitch of 3) are performed. The level of the pathology is then localised. This is followed by placement of a hook-wire under the lamina of the vertebral body or the interspinous ligament. Final confirmation was obtained by repeating the CT. Intraoperatively, the vertebral target was identified easily and immediately. No errors and complications related to the technique were observed. This technique is employed successfully in our institution for the removal thoracic intraspinal pathology that requires only a single level laminectomy. This method immediately and accurately identifies the desired spinal level and minimizes the operative time.

Introduction

The accurate localization of a spinal level is important in any spinal surgery. The importance of this is not only to localize the pathology (intradural or extradural) but also to minimise surgical trauma to the spine and soft tissue, as well as reduce the possibility of spinal instability especially if extensive bone removal is required to expose the pathology. The availability of techniques to minimise the need for exploration of multiple levels would go a long way in overcoming these problems.

Many surgeons use traditional intraoperative fluoroscopy as the preferred method of identifying the vertebral level by counting the vertebra beginning from cervical or lumbarsacral vertebra. When using this technique in identifying thoracic vertebra levels becomes difficult, due to the superimposed scapular shadow and ribs.

To overcome this problem, techniques such as skin marking using radio-opaque material and dye marking using methylene blue, patent blue V dye or carbon had been used [1-3]. With the advancement in imaging techniques computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based spinal navigation is becoming popular method for identifying the vertebral target [4,5]. Unfortunately, spinal navigational system is expensive and not available in most neurosurgical centres. We would like to describe a method of pre-operative marking of thoracic spinal level using hook-wire under CT scan control. The hookwire technique are used for preoperative localization of lesions that are deep, small, or located in an organ whose shape and position may change with the position of the patient. This technique is intended to help the surgeon find the lesion during surgery, thus allowing minimally invasive treatment.

CT-guided hookwire placement had been widely used for preoperative localization of breast microcalcifications and nonpalpable breast nodules [6]. The technique has also been used for preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules that are too small for percutaneous needle biopsy, deep osteoid osteomas, hepatic lesions, infratemporal fossa foreign bodies and deep intramuscular hemangiomas [7-9]. The aim of this paper is to describe a simple technique that providing accurate identification of the vertebral level for intradural or extradural lesions of the thoracic spine.

Technique and Clinical Result

The placement of the hookwire is done on the morning of surgery or a day prior to surgery. The patients were taken to the radiology department for the procedure and the hook wire placement was done under CT fluoroscopy (Siemens Somatom Plus, Erlangen, Germany).

The patient is placed in prone position on the CT scan couch. A temporary radio opaque skin marker is secured to the skin just lateral to the spinous process of the vertebra corresponding to the level of pathology which is localized based on previously performed MRI sagittal scan. A lateral scout CT scan is performed.Axial images using a spiral scan (5mm thickness with a pitch of 3) performed .The level is confirmed counting the vertebrae beginning from cervical or lumbarsacral levels. The level of pathology is again conformed from the previous MRI and the spinal lamina to be marked identified.

After thorough skin cleaning, local anaesthetic is infiltrated. The hookwire is then placed vertically over the lamina of the vertebral body or within the interspinous ligament (Figure 1a & 1b). The final conformation is obtained by repeating the CT scan. The level at which the hookwire is placed is clearly recoded in the case note. Then the hookwire is cut 3cm above the skin and secured in placed with gauze.

At surgery, patient is placed on prone position under general anaesthesia and the hook wire is exposed (Figure 2a). The patient is cleaned and draped. A midline skin incision is done at the site of the hookwire and the dissection is continued along the wire, care is taken not to burn the wire if monopolar diathermy is being used for the dissection. Once the tip is reached and the lamina is identified, the hookwire is removed (Figure 2b). The dissection is continued until the entire lamina is exposed and adequate exposure is archived. The planed laminectomy is then performed and excess to the pathology archived (Figure 3a & 3b).

This technique had been used in 13 patients undergoing surgery for single level thoracic spinal lesion (intradural and extradural extramedulary lesion) located between T1 to T10. In all except one patient we were able to successfully remove the lesion using a single level laminectomy based on hook wire localization. The identification of level of lesion had been accurate with shorter operative time. There was no complication encounter using this technique.

In the single patient in whom this technique was unsuccessful, the patient was obese and we had problems in inserting the wire. The operation required an extension of the laminectomy into the next level to identify and remove the lesion.

Discussion

Intraoperative use of X-ray for localization of spinal vertebra level for intraspinal pathology had been a standard practice in most spinal surgical centers. In thoracic vertebra level, counting the level on lateral intraoperative fluoroscopy had been made difficult by the scapular shadows. The use of intraoperative fluoroscopy poses drawbacks such a prolonged operating time and exposure to ionizing radiations. To avoid these problems, other reliable techniques had been used. Paolini et al. [2] used methylene blue dye injection to the tip of the spinous process rather than the skin surface; they virtually eliminated the risk of error. The advantage of this technique is minimally invasive with markedly reduced operation time and allows identification of the marked vertebra through immediate, visual and coloured information. The limitation of the technique, is unwanted diffusion of the dye toward adjacent spinous processes but in their experience, it was avoided by taking care not to drive the needle into the interspinous ligament and injecting no more than 0.5ml of blue dye [2].

MRI-based technique involves preoperative application of skin markers. Several variants of this technique had been reported, each proposing a different kind of skin marker such as capsule filled with halibut liver oil, longitudinal grids of oily substance and adhesive disposable skin markers [1,10,11]. This technique has its own limitation which is pointed out by Rosahl et al. [1], that obesity, heavy skin folding and thoracic hypermobility make the procedure unreliable because of the skin shifting, which occurs while the patient is being positioned [1]. The authors recommended that application of markers in prone position would decrease the error. Even by doing so, minimal shift of these markers during positioning for surgery would shift the marker over the adjacent spinous processes which would cause an inaccurate laminectomy being done.

Spinal-navigation systems weather MRI-based or CT based is being used in many centres, this technique requires expensive equipment, extra-time in preparing the patient and the overall cost of surgery increased [4 ,5]. The use of hookwire for spinal level marking had only been reported by Lesoin F et al. [12] in 1986.They described the technique for localization of spinal level for dorsal disc pathology but failed to mention the success rate of this technique [12].

We used hookwire marking for localising the thoracic spinal level for intraspinal pathology which requires a single level laminectomy. We found this technique simple, fast and more reliable than the other non-navigational localizing methods. By marking the lamina or spinous process itself, rather than the skin surface, we virtually eliminated the risk of error in identifying the desired laminectomy level. This technique is also minimally invasive with limited tissue trauma. We visually eliminated the use of ionizing radiations intraoperatively. Hence, the overall operation time is markedly reduced.

Potential limitation to this technique includes dislodgement of the hookwire, breakage of wire during dissection using monopolar diathermy and infection. These problems can be avoided by attention to sterility during the insertion of wire and ensuring that the wire is well plastered down to the skin to avoid dislodgment. Dural puncture is another problem if the operator is not careful. In our experience, we did not encounter any of these problems.

Conclusion

This method immediately and accurately identifies the desired spinal level and minimizes the operative and anesthetics time.

I rewatched Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS and it was magical

It took nearly six hours and 14 innings, but the Red Sox made it happen.

My heart sank when my baseball-loving kid asked when we were going to watch a game again. Then I remembered after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series I bought the full set of games on DVD, including the entire American League Championship Series. Having never actually watched any of the discs, I vaguely remembered stashing them in a box that had somehow made its way from Philly to Boston by way of several Cambridge apartments.

Eureka! I still had them.

We started with Game 4 of the ALCS against the Yankees because even in a quarantine I wouldn’t bother with the first three games. My kid soon became familiar with Papi, Manny, and the whole gang of Idiots. He promptly proved his Masshole bonafides, yelling, “Come on Millah!” when Kevin Millar came up to bat in the ninth against Mariano Rivera. For the record, neither my wife nor I have a Boston accent and he doesn’t either. I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was a proud moment.

My wife, incidentally, couldn’t care less about baseball, but she has fond memories of staying up late with her friends, living and dying with every pitch. When Dave Roberts stole second, she screamed like it was happening in real time.

Game 4 was iconic, of course. The whole sequence belongs in a time capsule. Starting with Millar’s walk to Dave Roberts’ steal through Bill Mueller knocking the great Mariano Rivera off the mound with the game-tying single like he was Charlie Brown in a Peanuts strip. And then, much, much later, Big Papi’s home run. Game 6 was even more famous with the whole bloody sock thing, while Game 7 was just pure cathartic release.

But Game 5 — holy shit, Game 5. I had forgotten how magically insane it was. Over 14 innings and almost six hours, it was like watching a slow-motion nightmare unfold only to emerge in a blissy dream state where unicorns are real and it ain’t over ‘til Big Papi takes a swing.

To set the scene, Game 4 ended after midnight, meaning Game 5 took place literally the same day. Your starters were Mike Mussina and Pedro Martinez, making perhaps his last start in a Boston uniform.

The Sox took an early 2-0 lead but couldn’t bust out a big inning against Mussina, who settled down and pitched a gem. Martinez was also dealing, but that pitch count was rising higher as we got to the sixth with the Sox leading, 2-1, which is when I started taking notes.

Martinez is getting up near 100 pitches. I forgot that after 100 pitches he turned into Ramiro Mendoza. Thankfully, Joe Buck is here to remind us. Tim McCarver thinks pitch counts are overrated and now I’m yelling at McCarver to shut the fuck up. (For future reference, STFUTM will serve as shorthand.)

Earlier, he told an incredibly random story about Trinidad Hubbard that made absolutely no sense. Hard to believe, but there really was a point when McCarver was an insightful announcer. Happens to all of them, eventually.

Martinez gets Bernie Williams to pop up, but Jorge Posada reaches on a quirky infield single and Ruben Sierra follows with another hit. I’ve seen this movie before. It ends badly. Tony Clark strikes out and now it’s up to Miguel Cairo. Martinez just hit Cairo to load the bases. 2004 me is yelling at Terry “Tito” Francona: “GET HIM OUTTA THERE, FRANCONA.”

Tito leaves Martinez in to pitch to Jeter and Buck notes that Jeter hasn’t put his stamp on this series yet. Oh God. The inside-out swing. The slicing line drive landing in right. Three runs are going to score. I’ll go to my grave saying Prime Nomar was better, but it would really help if Captain Intangibles stopped doing stuff like this.

Looked like Cairo may have been out at the plate, but it’s real close. You know what this game doesn’t have? Replay review. There were at least eight plays by my count that would have been subject to replay review and this game would still be playing if that was the case. We got along fine without reviewing every close play and I would like to return to that nebulous state of affairs when the world stops burning.

You know what else this game doesn’t have? Fans on cell phones. Everyone is hanging on every pitch and it’s beautiful. I know this because the broadcast keeps cutting away to the stands and I’ve seen the same woman clasping her hands in prayer between pitches a dozen times. Pretty sure I’ve seen her at the Fresh Pond Trader Joes.

LOL, Martinez plunked Alex Rodriguez just because he could. McCarver doesn’t like it. STFUTM. Now Gary Sheffield walks to load the bases. Um, Tito? I think you can go get him now. Francona leaves Martinez in and he gets Hideki Matsui to fly out. Good job, Tito.

The Yankees had a chance to break it open in the eighth, but Mike Timlin gets A-Rod to pop up with a runner on third and one out. This was A-Rod’s chance to be a True Yankee and he blew it. Shame, really.

On we go to the bottom of the eighth and it’s time for the WebMD update. Today’s injury is a broken heart. Thanks, guys. Really appreciate it.

Here comes Papi and he takes Tom Gordon over the Monster and off the Volvo sign. I miss the Volvo sign. Now Millar, who draws another walk. Dude could take a walk like nobody else. Roberts comes in to pinch run and Gordon throws over a half dozen times. He’s clearly rattled. It’s happening again.

We’ve officially reached the moment where Francona becomes a super genius. Everyone keeps expecting Roberts to steal second, but Tito calls for the hit-and-run and Trot Nixon executes it perfectly sending a line drive single to right center. God bless that dirtbag right fielder.

First and third, nobody out and Joe Torre calls on Rivera. Officially this will go down as a blown save when Jason Varitek lofts a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game, 4-4, but this is on Gordon. No Yankee ever scared me more than Mariano. Salute to him.

When McCarver gets what he considers a profound thought in his head, he slows his cadence for dramatic effect. Then he repeats himself like he’s delivering a dugout sermon from Whitey Herzog.

“After 169 games and eight innings, the Red Sox season comes down to one inning,” McCarver tells us before the ninth. “One inning.” Oh Tim, we’re just getting started.

Keith Foulke is on to pitch the ninth. He worked 2 ⅔ the night before and will pitch tonight and then again in Game 6. Foulke threw 14 shutout innings during the postseason and was never the same. He gave up his career for this postseason run and was never properly appreciated because he made some crack about fans the following season that caused everyone to turn on him. Here’s to you, Keith Foulke. I have no idea how you ever got anyone out, but you were nails.

In the ninth, Tony Clark hit a ball to right that somehow crawled up the short fence and landed in the stands. Had it stayed in play, Ruben Sierra would have scored and the game would have been over. Ah, the 13th. Nothing bad can happen here. Sheffield is swinging for the Mass Pike. He’s legitimately terrifying. Somehow, Wakefield strikes out Sheffield with a nasty knuckler that Varitek misplays into a passed ball. I remember thinking at the time, “This is how it’s going to happen. This is how they’re going to kill us.”

Two outs now and Matsui’s at first. Whoops, another passed ball. Now he’s at second. Intentional walk to Posada. Everyone at Fenway is nervous as hell. My wife comes into the room and starts watching. Now she’s nervous.

Seriously though, one more miscue from Varitek and he’s Mike Torrez combined with Bill Buckner. Somehow, somehow, Wakefield strikes out Sierra and Varitek miraculously holds on. Fenway erupts. My wife cheers. “Mom, you know what’s going to happen,” my kid says but none of us care. This was the greatest game I ever saw and even now it doesn’t seem real.

OK, now the 14th. Esteban Loiaza is on to pitch for the Yankees and he’s somehow become Whitey Ford. His cutter is filthy. Johnny Damon, who has done absolutely nothing this series, draws a walk.

Two outs and here’s Manny. I always loved Manny in these spots because a) he’s a great hitter and b) he’s completely impervious to pressure. God, this is a great at-bat. My wife is tense. My kid is yelling, “Come on, Papi!” Finally, the big man does his thing and Johnny Damon comes home from second with the winning run.

Buck had a great call. “Damon can keep right on running to New York.” McCarver immediately blows it by saying, “He didn’t do it again, did he?” Dramatic pause. “He did.” Thanks, Tim. Oh, and STFU.

It didn’t take long (after she managed to convince the crabhuman) for Rosoline to carry Astella into the Megalo capital, with only little bits of resistance from the rogue robots in the desert lands between her hideout and the city. Unfortunately for Rosoline, her research process was soon interrupted, with the lab being invaded by more of Mega’s combat mechanoids. “No!” The wolfhuman couldn’t help but yell in frustration, moving forward to destroy the mechanoids, before being cut off and knocked back into Astella by a large, robotic hound tearing through part of the wall, cutting off power to the systems.

“Alright, now it’s personal...” Rosoline growled, gesturing for Astella to stay back as she engaged the hound. She wasted no time in starting to plot her course of action, running at the robot before diving out of the way as it charged forward and back again, rearing up to try and crush the wolfhuman with its front legs. Rosoline quickly observed its face, taking note of a thin layer of armour covering it, likely to obscure a control module of some kind. She couldn’t help but smirk to herself, having found her target, before backflipping out of the way of the attack and countering with a quick jump & boot to the armoured plating; only to tink right off it.

‘OK, thick enough that I can’t just smash it off, although...” She quickly thought to herself, ‘Hope the lab boys don’t mind me breaking some of their stuff.” She shrugged to herself, running over to the system that had being running the analysis on Astella’s biodata, baiting the hound robot to chase her, before jumping off the terminal and backflipping up onto the robot’s head, grabbing onto its ears as it tried to buck her off. “Come on ugly! Try me!” She taunted the bot, correctly predicting that its AI would take a different approach to throwing her off, by butting its head against a wall, which she countered by jumping down to its back. A move which would confirm her suspicion, as the robot moved to smash its back into the wall instead. ‘Gotta have good timing then.’ She smirked to herself, jumping back up to the head, then down onto its face.

As expected the robot once again tried to shake her off, before trying to smash her into a paste against the wall. “Wait for it....” Rosoline muttered to herself, seeing the attack coming before leaping off just before impact, seeing the armour visibly split from the crash, allowing her to leap back up and pry it off before tumbling back to the ground.

With the removal of its face armour, the hound’s control module was exposed, although it’s operation quickly changed, with laser blasters extending out of the robot’s back, allowing it to attack Rosoline from a distance in between charges and jumps. She barrelled to the side, feeling one laser skim her hair, before diving forward to barely slip under the robot’s charge. As it turned, she made her move, leaping up and delivering a kick to the control module, breaking it and causing the mech to shutdown and topple to the ground.

“Ha!” Rosoline gloated upon landing, striking a cocky pose & dusting her jacket off, with Astella poking out of her hiding spot.

“How did you do that...!?” She asked in awe, looking at the inactive hound with a sense of fear and intrigue.

“Same way I always do, see how it works, then throw myself at a weakness.” Rosoline laughed, before sighing, “Though my research is kaput again, and the doc knows you’re here. He’s definitely still after you, we should-” Rosoline quickly trailed off, hearing some mechanical parts whirr to life, spinning around before receiving a metallic paw to her face. Hard. The wolfhuman tumbled to the ground, being pinned down by one of the paws as she saw the hound’s parts detach from the body, with the legs attaching to the head module like four arms. As one of them held Rosoline down, another scooped up Astella as a floating platform arrived through the hole the hound bot had made upon its initial entry.

“Princess Rosoline, how nice of you to deliver the Solar Princess to me on a silver platter.”

Rosoline growled as she struggled to look off to the side. “Doctor!” She hissed, meeting Mega’s eyes.

“I do apologise for interrupting your initiative Princess.” The doctor said with a small smirk, as the hound placed Astella into a spherical capsule, with binds forming over her joints, “But I need this crab. I’m sure you understand.” He said with a cruel smile, tapping the panel on his floating platform, “Count yourself lucky that I’m feeling generous today, no one in this complex had to die, how convenient.” He laughed, before taking off, with the floating machine made out of the hound parts following shortly afterwards, freeing Rosoline who struggled to her feet.

“Damn you Megs...” She growled, already planning to give chase, once she’d licked her wounds sufficiently.
