Church dance + Gems au = accidental near-fusion???

And now, for the main event: Black Opal, the fusion of an Orange Pearl (Kim Kitsuragi) and mystery gem (Harry Du Bois). Below is a reference I made:

Black Opal, the fusion of Harry and Kim as part of my Disco Elysium / Steven Universe crossover AU. I really wanted to lean into the nostalgia and adrenaline junkie aspects of both characters. The conclusion I came to was a 70s biker. I think every time I've seen a picture of someone's american dad back when they were younger, it was a guy with insane facial hair and a homoerotic biker fit, which lead me to this as the aesthetic for a fusion of these two. These are black opals, for reference:

As a fusion, they both struggle to speak as a singular being. They are not a very stable fusion, mostly due to Harry's damaged gem and how quickly they both can diverge from each other in action and personality. When they do agree however and can maintain Black Opal, its the aspect of themselves that brings out the daring qualities of the other; the one that says "hold on!" and presses their foot on the accelerator, the one that revs their engine, the one that brings a boombox to a boat ride. After a while Black Opal is able to assimilate both aspects of Kim and Harry, as seen in the last panel where his enthusiastic and showboating personality (which both Harry and Kim posses individually in different ways) becomes more like a singular being, like other fusions in the show.

I arranged their limbs and eyes according to where I think they diverge in terms of personality and what they try to accomplish as a fusion / where their interests conflict. This seems to be the case for fusions in Steven Universe as well, where the less harmonious a fusion is, the less proportional the limbs and eyes are to a human body. Harry and Kim have divergences in their eyes and in their forearms. While physically they follow each other in a common goal, Harry and Kim have different ways of handling the world and diverge in their sense of interfacing. Kim has a delicate touch generally, while Harry tends to brute force his way through obstacles. They also have divergent eyes; They both see the world very differently and have different reactions to the same stimulus. Besides these two divergences, they are a fairly harmonious fusion physically.

This is Kim's first fusion, meanwhile Harry has fused before with multiple people from Precinct 41 and his ex, but due to his amnesia he doesn't remember that he has.

Harry and Kim are both basically in historical cosplay throughout the entire game, and I liked the idea of them both being a fusion that dresses in an outdated and charming way as well, like a person out of time. Black Opal as a gemstone I chose because the rainbow coloration of Harry's pale damage on his gem would intermingle with Kim's orange pearl, while the orange and green of the two of them mixed as colors would be a darker muddy color. Thus, this would equate to a dark gem with rainbow coloration inside. Opals tend to be porous as well, which I found fitting for Harry's eroded gemstone.

I love how Harry and Kim have whack-ass facial hair in game and I wanted to give them both an insane facial hair combo. The leather jacket is basically a combination of Harry's green disco blazer and Kim's orange bomber jacket. Kim's gloves become biker's gloves, the "tie" from Harry is the bandana they both wear around their mullet with buzzed sides. They're wearing these big biker's boots, which are drawn largely from Kim's boots in game. Kim has a ton of little compartments to his clothes, so I liked the idea of there being a bunch of zippers everywhere. I'd have put even more and drawn on some patches but my hand was starting to fall off from drawing so for now this is it.

I'll definitely be drawing more of this fusion and for this AU in the future but if you guys have suggestions, ideas, art requests for the crossover let me know. The tag for posts about this au is "disco universe".

Harry has a spiked bat but instead of nails it has spiked glass (disco ball-esque) which would have been a normal bat for pre-martinaise harry (great for a gym teacher), and uh I actually don't know what to call Kim's weapon, they're like disc blades, and so stick plus little sharp bits equals Black Opal's chainsaw ^_^

My original ideas were a disco ball frag grenade for Harry, maybe something dodgeball like for pre-martinaise, and a compound crossbow for Kim, which would probably just be a pellet crossbow for Black Opal. But then one, I wanted Kim's weapon to be "something strikes quick and hard, with little need for multiple blows" (in the words of phos :3) and generally more aerodynamic than a crossbow (I was definitely thinking ranged weapon). So um throwable halo as a weapon equals the disc blades :) ummm now i'm gonna be completely honest, the disc blades are from deathbringer in wings of fire, they are like circles that are knives??? and i looked at the graphic novel and yeah they are just sharp circles lmao

I think in general I was really excited to draw a chainsaw lmao, I also switched up Black Opal's design a little (aviator jacket, different colors) but I love the blacklight/bowling alley carpet palette that he has.

I haven't actually seen steven universe but this has a bunch of my favorite things so I really like this AU (minerals, disco elysium, crossover aus) and phos's art is so cool <3

i'll probably do more in the future cuz i adore the idea and i used to be pretty into steven universe at one point -- and i just enjoy minerals greatly. as well as disco elysium. really all components here shHBDSFNBnvbs

anywho i had a couple ideas of my own about harry -- this is moreso just some messy experiments for visuals' sake (mostly trying to get his colour scheme to trend majority green, i was wondering how that would look i suppose? while still keeping at least a little of the zaniness of phos's.)

admittedly i don't know too much about moss agate but it seems to be a fantastic fit imo, especially if jean is an agate too -- i did also want to try out green onyx as a potential too, if (mostly) only for the green-and-red colour scheme and thus opportunity to work in his flushing (though i do also have a pair of 6-sided dice made out of green onyx, which made it feel extra fitting due to the in-game rolls and such -- they always made me think of harry, thus... this). having learned that the difference between agate and onyx comes down to the direction of banding does make green onyx seem fitting in that sense of thematic... meshing? or whatever with jean at least, though i'm not sure if it really holds up to whatever.. interpreted meaning green onyx has. (i can't seem to find a consistent definition on what green onyx even is, either?? though i do have a specific visual identity for what i mean -- anywho (again). enough of that cjhnbv)

i'll probably come back & edit this with more pictures or just reblog when i have em idk. but Yeah 👍 gosh i dunno i could keep gushing for a while (primarily about phos's work thus far, it's fantastic and please do look at it all she's a great artist and thinks all of this au stuff through very thoroughly. and . graahrhghgh !!!!!!!!!!)

the world of Disco Elysium is bleak and unyielding and this is reflected in the artwork. each character, in their headshot portrait, faces the viewer directly. their expressions are neutral, exhausted, unsmiling. sure klaasje has a faint humorless smirk, and evrart a wide smug grin, but both are obviously carefully-chosen armor against the soul-crushing grind of Late-Stage Capitalism.

Disco Elysium is full of a ton of meta explanations that make what you do as a player fit into the universe of the game but I will never recover from Kim Kitsuragi telling you he was prepared for you to have an erratic style of walking that prioritizes containers

and then he is ultimately so psyched to find out that your backstory explains why you're able to run so consistently like, he was just thinking about it the whole time

i would like to take a moment to describe something that happens in the moralist route that drives me absolutely insane, for the sake of the people who've played through DE but cannot be bothered to be a centrist, just so you can... idk, inherit my brainrot (endgame spoilers ahead):

in the moralist route, the event quest you get for it is one where you get soona (or noid? potentially?) to help you turn the statue at the roundabout into a huge antenna to contact the moralintern airship that's flying above revachol, in order to tell them about the upcoming civil war in martinaise and/or the 2mm pale hole in the church and so on.

while you're trying to establish communications, you run into a lot of radio interference. it's a lot of people speaking in different languages, number stations, and so on, but then all of a sudden, you hear kim's voice.

"it's cold now..." he says. "... someone's been maintaining it, the wiring has been repaired..."

when you turn to look at him, kim's just as confused as you are. he insists he hasn't said anything, he doesn't know where that's coming from. it sure SOUNDS like him, but how can it be him when he's right there next to you?

soona cuts in and explains, this is just some pale interference. entroponetic crosstalk, it happens. "a particularly eerie speciment, but still just a harmless piece of the past returning to surface." and kim's like "right, i just wish i could remember what i was talking about..." that mystery solved, you resume your mission and continue trying to contact the airship.

but then, much, much later, after the tribunal, when you arrive at the island, you both walk into the seafort to find a generator. kim places his hand on it to check for warmth and then announces to you:

"it's cold now, but someone's been maintaining it. the wiring has been repaired."

neither of you acknowledge it out loud. there's no time, you have to question the suspect, you have to close the case, you have to move on. but still, inland empire reminds you, haven't you heard that before?

(and if kim doesn't make it to the island somehow, if he gets shot during the tribunal and you end up taking cuno with you, he's the one who checks the generator instead. "this shit's cold," he says. and inland empire Immediately senses that something's wrong.

"'It's cold now,' he was supposed to say. 'But someone has been maintaining it. The wiring has been repaired'..."

"But he's not here to say it. Something *else* got in the way. Events *intervened*...")
