today i'm welcoming home my first BJD, "lieselotte!" i would like to occasionally post more doll content (especially lolita related) on my blog from now on.. so you may be seeing her often!! ♡
lolita collaborations sparked my interest in ball jointed dolls quite a while ago, but i've only recently started researching them and have come to love all of the similarities these hobbies share. i was very lucky to be able to find my discontinued dream doll completely unopened from a secondhand sale despite this specific model being made and distributed almost 15 years ago. it gives the same feeling as a very well preserved time capsule of sorts.
to give more information on her--she is a 2010 limited release model volks super dollfie x baby, the stars shine bright collaboration from the storyline "harajuku memories"
she is absolutely everything i wanted in a doll and a perfect fit for me as a lolita and avid fan of btssb. i prefer the older faceups of her rather than the more modern ones. i intend on matching coords with her-- so far, i own the same gingham rose OP, her default dress, and the honey cross shoes and socks.. though i want to hunt down the same christina hat she wears. i plan to take her outside with me once the weather gets a bit nicer, as her storyline mentions that being her wish!
i'm quite new to the hobby and still have a lot to learn, so feel free to share any resources or tips ^_^

The BJD White Whale
In Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Captain Ahab went on a revenge quest against a white sperm whale (named Moby Dick) for biting his leg off in a prior voyage. This revenge quest ended up basically destroying good ol' Ahab.
BJD collectors talk all the time about "grails" - the dolls you want but may never find. Don't ever read much about them white whales, tho. The doll you were going to create, the character you were going to shell, the hybrid you planned, and years later, your plan still hasn't panned out. The mods were too difficult. The glue never adhered properly. The dye didn't take.
My white whale: a hybrid for this legit Fairyland Chic Line Lishe head with literally any legit body.
Tumblr media
This bitch's head has caused me so much frustration and misery.
I picked a fight with a DOA mod over this bitch. I have spent an uncounted amount of money trying to find a body for this bitch. I have met some of the worst collectors in the BJD hobby over this bitch. ("They can't re-release this line, or my doll will go down in value, and that's just unacceptable." No. Your doll is gonna yellow, and down down down goes your value, kiddo.)
Sure, she doesn't look too bad on this Dollpamm Skinny(F01) body when she's got clothes on, but take them off or look at her sideways, and...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neck flare!
Sure, the Doll Family H Xiao Chan 1/5 scale girl body is the right size, but it's totally the wrong look for a mature female head:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've learned that doll-company provided measurements are totally unreliable: I purchased 2D Doll Cherry Tomato. According to the website, her measurements were almost perfect.
Tumblr media
Got the doll. She was HUGE.
Tumblr media
1/4 scale? More like 50 cm tweener.
Tried Dollshe 16F and 26F fashion-sized dolls. Shoulders were way too broad. Even tried a SugarBone body and a discontinued Allegorica Evelyn. No dice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So when the dealer emailed me back and said Fairyland wasn't interested in rebooting the line without hundreds of customers, welp - this Captain Ahab went out and bought another body.
Tumblr media
Huajing 1/4 special body. Like 2D Doll, the measurements should be perfect. I'm not worried about height - I had the head on a Ficondoll body, and I was good with the height.
If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, I am certifiable.

BJD Sales
Hi everyone! I will have several big expenses over the summer (wisdom tooth removal, newer car, potential ADHD and pcos evals/diagnoses, etc) and I want to make sure they are as... least-impacting as possible on my savings, especially since most are medical and I have no idea how much my insurance is actually going to cover... so any reblogs and shares are always appreciated!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most things will be cross-posted on Den of Angels, Instagram, and Facebook. Additional information will be under the cut. I ship from the USA and due to postal concerns, I can only send the large, high-value packages within the USA right now.
Allergen warning: I live in a pet-friendly, non-smoking household near a corn mill.
Harucasting Smile Maji head: She’s some kind of tan resin, but I don’t 100% remember which one. Her previous owner split the head and body so the coa went with the body. I remember her previous owners name & email, but I don’t recall their instagram handle. Maji has thankfully NOT been recasted so I do not worry about her legitimacy, but I wanted to be upfront about that detail. Her magnets need to be reglued and she still has faceup residue. As with any of my Harucasting dolls, in respect to Haru’s wishes, I will only sell his dolls to pro-artist/anti-recast individuals.
$100 + shipping
5stardoll Elf Elaine: She was painted by her previous owner and given a mani-pedi which is chipping as well as pretty purple body shimmer. Her face still has faceup residue on it. She’s really cute but I need to make room — I am willing to sell her head separately, though. According to her card of authenticity she was produced in late 2018. I believe she is in normal pink skin.
$170 + shipping
Latidoll Blue Yern:
Yern is a slim MSD sized doll and the Blue (MSD) line has been long discontinued. Yern still has her coa and Latidoll manual, as well as the emblem in and outside of her head. I am not sure of the specifics but her torso has had some kind of mod job for mobility reasons?
Yern is from early 2009 and has certainly yellowed, but her yellowing appears to be consistent. Yern would probably benefit from a restringing with thicker elastics but I can get her to pose and stand just fine. Her s hooks were replaced and she has traditional/standard bjd s hooks in her wrists and ankles. For whatever reason one elbow likes to stay slightly bent. Yern will be shipped UNSTRUNG so that would be a good opportunity for her elastics to be changed; she still has an o hook for her head.
Her faceup is holding up really well considering it is quite old but please be aware that it is old, has some wear, and it is not factored into the price I am selling Yern at. The biggest sign of wear I noticed as a small dark streak near her temple.
She has some damage near her foot/ankle. Considering her age I think she has been holding up really well.
$100 + shipping
Dollzone MSD Girl Body: normal pink resin. Arrived from Alice collections in late 2022, spent most of its time in the box. Asking $200 + shipping.
Harucasting Big Geuru: She is in neul medium tan. She has a face up by @tonocha331. She has an extra pair of hands and comes with her box and card of authenticity. She will come without clothes or eyes.
She has some small s hook scratches in one wrist from a previous owner and several small scratches on her belly. Her face up seems to be in overall good condition other than three shiny spots on the side of her head. $550 + shipping
Logandolls Primrose: Primrose in light tan (coffee) with additional heel feet (strung) and an extra pair of hands. She does not come with a company box but she has a card of authenticity and comes with a blanket that I believe logandolls made for her. Received in a trade from my friend @groovyblueworld! She will NOT come with a pair of eyes. If desired, I can ship her in an old Dollzone company box for extra protection. Ordinarily she would cost $480 new but I am asking $440 + shipping - you basically get the extra hands and feet for free and an extra $10 discount. I can also sell a Flower Primrose faceplate in Resinsoul normal for an additional $40.
$440 + shipping

Referring to BJDs as 'investments' gives me the ick, because unless your doll is a highly sought after, discontinued, potentially rare sculpt, it's monetary value won't increase. I honestly can't separate the term 'investment' from the thought of people who buy things solely to fix them up and sell them for a higher cost. Last I checked, we called those people 'scalpers'.

So...
This is a big troublesome problem for me 🥲
If you have followed me on instagram for a while (or maybe even here), you know I'm a big advocat for Youpladolls. I love her dolls, love her sculpts, love the resin colours, love the resin itself. I love their posing and stability and quite frankly, I consider myself her number 1 fan 😅
I own all her MSD and smaller sculpts (except for Vlad, though he is the same sculpt as Vaéron, just with human ears, so... that still counts), and I have a strict "One Doll Per Sculpt" rule, that I usually manage to hold myself up to, to at least SOMEWHAT keep my collection at bay.
Only exception so far are 2 Unoa sculpts that I actually have a double, but these are related, so. Different.
Now. Youpla is the one that always makes me want to break this rule. Starting with Ziya, I've wanted a tan Ziya to begin with. Got a petal one because I missed the last preorder and the instock tan one sold within minutes. Got tempted immediately half a year later when she brought dark tan Ziya to LDoll... (I wouldn't have gotten the petal one had I known she was making this beauty for LDoll...). And ever since then I've been tempted to buy a tan one whenever I saw one for sale.
So now I COULD order one. I COULD order a tan one, or I COULD go for the chocolate colour (which is a new skin tone different to the old chocolate from Lupita's preorder, and close to the Dark Tan...).
I'm KINDA glad the chocolate is not like the old skin colour, because then I'd ALSO be tempted to get a Lupita in chocolate... When she was released I knew I wanted the dark tan, as I had seen it on LDoll in person and knew it was gorgeous. But the lighter chocolate looked so pretty as well, so I almost bought both back then.
But now I'm tempted to get a petal Lupita as well, because... imagine how cute an albino look would be on her?
But in the end, my "One Doll Per Sculpt" rule is still keeping me at bay.
The only thing that is ACTUALLY tempting me (and I mean, really, whispering in my ear to go for it), is getting a chocolate Vàna... I'm pretty sure the sculpt will be discontinued after this preorder, together with Olive and Ophélie (and possibly Ziya as well due to age of the mold?), so this would be the last chance... and why would I get her?? I HAVE a Vàna. In fact, Vàna was my 3rd BJD (after 2 Minifees I bought together) and the first one I actually fell in love at first sight. I love her dearly, but the thing is, she's in mint and therefore not "compatible" with the rest of my crew. She has her own people (Celeste in purple and Vaéron in turquoise) and her own universe. So if I got her in chocolate, she could hang out with the rest of the crew...
Tumblr media
And to be completely honest, this thought is seriously haunting me (in the most positive way possible)...
I still have time until beginning of April to think about it...

I am a doll collector with BJD and buying parts or making hybrids can be a pain to color match. Just like playline dolls there’s not much consistency between brands. Some resins age differently, too.
The most reliable color matching source would probably be something like Pantone color cards, but those are FREAKING EXPENSIVE and it’s not reasonable to expect everyone to have them.
BJD collecting is an expensive luxury hobby and there are some of us that do need to keep our spending as minimal as possible.
Tumblr media
This skintone chips set (https://www.pantone.com/products/fashion-home-interiors/skintone-guide-limited-edition) has an excellent range of skin tones, but seems to be lacking the pasty pale practically white colors a lot of Asian BJD come in and costs as much as a lower-priced BJD.
Tumblr media
This set (https://www.pantone.com/products/plastics/the-pantone-matching-system-plastic-standard-chips-collection) seems ideal for color matching plastics, which resin is, at first but it’s polypropylene chips which will degrade in a few years, and not all colors of urethane or epoxy resins can be replicated in polypropylene. It’s also NINE THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS.
We all know I’m always looking for something functional and accessible and $9k that’s going to discolor and maybe even crumble in a decade is not my idea of accessible.
-
@maleficentmrsofallevil suggested a digital resource (https://redketchup.io/color-picker) which is free and accessible to most collectors that have an internet connection and using HEX codes is consistent across devices, however there are a few problems that we might run into.
Tumblr media
Everyone’s monitors/phone screens and cameras would have to be calibrated exactly the same, and everyone’s lighting when making comparisons would have to be identical for this to be a viable resource. The hex chart being backlit could also skew the way it looks compared to a tangible resin sample.
That’s frustrating. Free and easy for most people to get a hold of is the ideal.
The main benefit of a physical vs digital resource for color matching is that the color sample and the doll are both subjected to the same lighting conditions, monitor settings, and camera settings so even if those factors vary between users, the comparison will still be relatively accurate.
-
A bunch of us sat around discussing different options. International hobby paint brands like Vallejo or Mr. Color, international makeup foundation color cards, etc. etc.
I’ve decided to give DMC embroidery floss color cards a try.
Tumblr media
There are two versions.
One has samples of the actual floss in the book and costs about $40.
https://amzn.to/3Oq8G2f
Tumblr media
The other has printed color blocks that presumably match the floss colors and costs about $10.
https://amzn.to/3Q2H8Bb
Tumblr media
DMC are sticklers for their colors being the same across dye lots. Sometimes they change the numbers on colors and sometimes they discontinue colors all together, so we do still run into the issue of whether everyone’s looking at the same color cards or different versions.
At $10, needing to replace or update the color card every few years isn’t nearly as daunting as a $9k plastic samples set falling apart in your hands once a decade.
(Can you tell I hate polypropylene when used in conjunction with dolls?)
Other variables that will affect the efficacy of using DMC color cards are the conditions under which the color cards are kept like sun exposure, temperature, humidity etc. affecting either the color of the thread samples or the quality of the printed samples.
Another factor is consistency between printed samples.
I have not received these, yet, but my plan is to first compare them to each other to see how well the printed samples match the swatched samples, and then proceed from there.

Sorry I’ve been quiet, I sold at a new con (bought as much dnd & baldur’s gate merch I could find) and started baldurs gate with two of my best friends. I got an ear infection (I think because I choked on a bunch of water), I’m in quarantine because people I met at the con tested positive for Covid 😭. I mask but I am not risking being a spreader so gonna be careful as much as I can!!
I am aiming to make an Astarion out of Logandolls Pan (on layaway) and I just got my Way head from Dannidesignerdolls for my Tav, a Tiefling bard with my name (of course). My friends Tav’s are so cool too. I can’t stop painting them.
Vampire pan is discontinued but maybe one day I’ll find a floating head to swap onto my pan! That being said, non toothy Pan is just the perfect shell for Astarion if you ask me. Logandolls is as pleasant as always to talk to, I can’t wait for his new sculpt release.
My Way is a prototype! Danni is still working and developing Way in her own way, but I’m pumped that current Way looks so much like my tiefling (plus I am a sentimental sap and I’m so hyped to how a head made by my friend).
Also!! My fave lolita BJD stylist remade my favorite JSK that just screams classic punk lolita, a bit h. Naoto. They made me a pair of goth bunny ear clips too for my bday 😭🥹❤️ Dollish sweets is an amazing artist and as a person that wears lolita, the quality is like 1:1. It’s amazing, I’m not a huge fan of dolly lolita style clothing in most BJD clothing shops. These outfits make Marie look like another person trying to get their photo taken by FRUITS. It just feels and looks like real lolita fashion. Should do a fashion show with all the pieces I have from them 😌

Over a year in the making, but Tinyfox Cygnus is here! He is so so cute and getting all the attention now. He is the C08 head painted by my friend. He’s intended to be more of a weird chibi version of Cygnus than a child version of him, and he definitely has a kind of tiny gremlin aura to him.
I’ve been interested in Tinyfox a few years now because I was fascinated by the idea of a YoSD size doll in vinyl (note that they are not actually vinyl, but I thought that at the time - they are actually some other kind of plastic with an added soft coating, their internal construction is also not exactly like a typical vinyl dolls skeleton nor a resin bjd’s elastics but what the company are calling ‘MJD’- or mechanical jointed doll). I wanted an animetic version of Cygnus to match how I draw him, that didn’t take up the shelf real estate of a DD, and thought a little chibi version of him would be cute.
The project ended up taking a lot longer than expected due to Tinyfox discontinuing their old 1/6 bodies right after I got the head - this turned out to be for the better because I much prefer their new versions they brought out next, it just took…ages for them to release it in the colour I needed. (‘Pink’ as opposed to ‘white.’ They even did a preorder for the bodies in pink that got cancelled due to not enough orders. Luckily they did eventually do another preorder, it just took months and months and months…) On top of that, my friend wouldn’t be able to send the head back for a good while due to the post being closed between Australia and the US. However, now that he’s finally here and all together he was definitely worth the wait.
I really love tinyfox! They have a nice weight to them that makes them fun to hold, and the recent fullsets they’ve been putting out are very affordable. It may only be a matter of time before I get another one. Personally, I hope they bring back the ‘toffee’ skin tone they had with their old bodies. I would love to see new dolls using it.

Hello! I know a lot of people probably don’t know, but I collect dolls, namely ball jointed dolls (BJDs)
Recently I have gotten a new body for one of my dolls, so I am selling the old body. This is a DollZone 1/6 BB dragon body. This is the body that Moon/Star came on, but this body is now discontinued.
I’m selling it for $190 USD plus shipping, or best offer. If you have any questions, want more photos, or just want to talk about dolls in general, don’t hesitate to send me an ask!
Link to sale:

Craving doll making, inspired recently. Found this wild article on making a BJD _from scratch_! However, they failed to point out that casting and such should be done outdoors! I don't know how smelly casting silicone or urethane resin are, but if anyone's doing this, please be careful!!
Like, shoot, I was just gonna take a 30 dollar cheap-o My size barbie and try and turn it into Sailor Jupiter because the dollfies were A) Discontinued/probably sold out B) Fraking _700_ dollars!!!!!!.
But making my own mold IS an option, but I am sooo lazy and still have other projects in the pipeline (Unfinished Animorphs Ax sitting in a bag in my closet says hi!!) I'd like to get those done first before the doll projects take over everything that I am and I become obsessed. (Swear, I have an addictive personality because I've gotten TOO involved with more than one project. It's worrying, but then again, ahhh, I have no life. *smiles*)
TBH, I mostly want to make Molly/Remy dolls for fun and for the challenge, but I'll be starting off with painting/sculpting funko pops and see how to get a feel for it. I've got a Sailor Moon related doll in the pipeline, (a popular male character and a project I started at, like, 15 or so!! I was shocked I found the original hair I'd used.)) but that's just re-hairing, re-painting eyes and sewing clothes. Relatively not a big deal and an easy beginner project.
I also have a movie-Gambit Ken doll laying around unfinished. I even made him a little staff, but the jewel thingy broke off and the staff was once used to clean out our dryer's lint catcher. 0_o Now I can't remember where it is, but hopefully it's in one of the craft boxes. He's just missing his belt and shoes, and I'd love to redo his stubble and sew on his little hat. ~_^ Gambit, along with my way unfinished Maximum Ride dolls, is currently stored in a bag in a drawer in my old armoire in the living room and has been there since around 2010. Oops.
Time and motivation are my biggest hurdles. It's like, I want to so, but oh, there's chores and dinner and laundry to fold!! >_> Then the weekend comes and I end up just sitting in front of a screen. Maybe once the ball gets rolling, I'll get back in the zone and complete everything. I'm just a big procrastinator, I don't know how other crafters do it, much less people who do it for a job full time.
Thanks for reading!

Don't follow me if you support recasts or own a recast, I can spot them from a mile away. Please support the original artist of the doll, there's no excuse to owning a recast.
Even if it's a discontinued doll, buying a recast of said doll can hurt the secondhand market and make it harder for new BJD collectors to buy secondhand.

I was going to start the layaway for the BJD body I need for the heads I'm waiting on, finally, but then realized that there was a doll in-stock that I had liked that got discontinued.
So, there is a new doll on the way. lol
Also, I thought this was funny. I already have an idea for his character, but the only name that I could think of was Rupert after a character that I like. What was funny was that I hadn't 100% settled on the name. While my brother was over and hanging out we ended up putting on a show, just one episode, and the front credits, I was like, huh, that one name looks familiar... Later, I was like, Sir Leon?! Lol. (First, a Merlin actor was in a show my mom was watching right when I came over, then new UA trailer today, and then this. lol) Anyway, I took that as a sign that I picked the right name for him.

Another doll line being discontinued
If you want a Doll Family-H 1/5 scale girl or boy BJD, you have until April 21, 2024. Then it's gone forever - thanks to recasters.
Tumblr media
Recast buyers wonder why legit collectors get so angry? It's because recasts are ruining the hobby. So no, it's not a "live and let live" situation. It's a "If I tolerate your behavior, I am harmed" situation.
I have to save up for these dolls, if I want to purchase responsibly. Instead, I'm making stupid financial decisions and rushing to buy before a line disappears - and doll companies are discontinuing lines a LOT. Tell me when I can buy a Soom Tiny Gem. They haven't been available in forever - certainly not since I started collecting. Dollzone and Dream Valley are basically releasing limited dolls once, with one re-release if we're LUCKY, and then the dolls are gone forever.
Recast doll purchasers are directly responsible for disappearing doll lines. If they don't buy, there's no market for these dolls.
Mistakes happen. But people who actively, knowingly pursue buying recasts in the face of overwhelming evidence that they are RUINING the legit hobby? Screw them. They suck.
Also - recasts are ugly. Sorry, not sorry. That's why recasting companies steal pictures from Insta and doll companies. If they used their own pictures, people wouldn't buy. Still amazes me that people are willing to accept a bait-and-switch, just to save a buck or two.

I really hope my souldoll elf twins arrive soon 🥺
I put them both on a massive layaway with DDE that’s been paid off for awhile now, which I originally placed late last July. I wrote to DDE on the 12th of this month, and they said souldoll has been behind so it will probably be a “couple of months, if not more” 😭 It looks like my wait time might be hitting a year for these two.
It makes sense there is a delay, especially since I know their faceup person was injured so they stopped offering faceups in the interim. I was only expecting 4-6 months + “dealer delay,” though. I love souldoll and they’ve made great strides to reduce their production times in the past to be closer to ~4ish months (sadly by discontinuing a lot of sculpts I love though lol), but I worry other people will not order from them at all because they’re put off by the wait times and souldoll will continue to take hit after hit. Souldoll is really cool and they’re one of my absolute favorite BJD companies but their dolls can be pretty niche so it’s a big risk when they make new doll releases.
On the bright side I have more time to consider what clothes to get them, as… I have not gotten them, well, anything. :’D I think Kyron should be about the same size as my other boys (Luts mdf, withdoll), but I know Devonia will need really stretchy bottoms due to the last time I owned a souldoll new-double kids body. I think I might order a dfh body or maybe the smartdoll pear that I can’t get out of my mind in the meantime and then start hunting for more bjd clothes as I list up parts of my collection to cull the herd the a bit and downsize. This summer I am hoping to get and set up a Billy Bookcase for my bjds.

I tried to buy a recast head on Aliexpress. Up until now my dolls have been legit only and I planned to keep it that way, but I was browsing around for other stuff on Ali (as one does) and on a whim searched up an older long-discontinued Fairyland event sculpt that I've loved for awhile. Just to see. There was one listing from a smaller recast shop for only around $20. I felt very conflicted about it but I ended up placing an order because I was really curious and there was no way I'd ever afford that sculpt legitimately if it did come along on the secondhand market. A couple weeks later the shop messages me to let me know that they're actually out of stock of that one head and not planning to make more, and gave me a refund. Part of me feels kind of relieved that it didn't work out but part of me is a little disappointed too I guess. I don't plan to try again because the idea of owning such a forbidden doll feels nervewracking and I also do sincerely care about my money going toward artists in the actual hobby community. I guess it was the extremely low price of the head and the curiosity and the idea of owning such a difficult to find sculpt (even a knockoff) that caused me to cave.
I've been thinking about the whole thing a lot, I think because it's made me think a lot about the recast issue and how it plays out in the BJD community. I've read countless articles and opinions and reasons why recasts are bad--I've heard every argument--and I do agree on the whole! And yet I still I feel like I can't really find it in myself to fault people who do buy recasts. Anyway, this is kind of a half-baked confession but I guess I just wanted somewhere to dump my jumbled feelings about this whole thing.
