me recommending disco elysium: "it's going to be so uncomfortable. you play as the saddest alcoholic detective you've ever seen and you spend the first part of the game realizing how much you have fucked up before the start of the story. the humiliation can potentially kill you. the secondhand embarrassment might kill you as the player. kids on drugs will call you slurs. there are ghosts everywhere and the city is a ruin. it's also the most hopeful and poetic work of fiction i have ever experienced."

Harry stands still, wistfully caressing a poster of a beautiful blonde woman. It's tacked up outside of an old moving picture theater, the poster's colour and style looks distinctly modern but it's already torn in places. [Volition]'s voice comes in strong, "Walk away, she'll just make you feel like dying again." His throat tightens, and somewhere deep in his brain a voice is telling him "It is her." The poster's title reads in bold pink font "BARBIE".

disco elysium grabbing me by the shoulders: "listen, everything is going to end and it's inevitable so do something beautiful while you still have the time. look at the men playing petanque in the bomb crater, look at the guy composing poetry as he imagines being with his wife and kids. there's a woman making dice in the chimney of an old commercial area. those kids are making music inside of a church. paint a wall, sing karaoke, play board games. everything is going to end but in the meantime something beautiful is going to happen. and maybe even the giant bug is real in the end."

Maybe it's because I barely slept last night but I'm kind of going insane over DE. This game feels like a love letter to the broken. It feels so distinct from games that try to send a positive message about these groups of people, but they feel like an outsider's perspective. Those games feel superficial, they feel palatable and gentle, easy to agree with the message when all of the examples are soft and made of plastic.
Disco Elysium writes openly about these people, in ways very few (critically acclaimed) games have done before. These broken people you meet, the alcoholics, the depressed people, the traumatized people, the neurodivergent, the disabled, the Unfixables, those not worth "saving". All of them are written with empathy. Cuno and Cunoesse, Evrart, Lena, Jean, and Harry, they're people affected by circumstance, by life. And the world treats them how many many people in real life are treated, but the narration, the "objective" voice (which I'm well aware it is not) that paints the world for you, that one? That one treats them honestly. It doesn't sugar coat and baby you, but you can tell the people behind the scenes who wrote these words had nothing but love in them when they did it.

With the amount of in-game time I spent staring at Kim's ass, I can't believe I never noticed that one of his gloves is ROLLED UP and the other is NOT
And only after inspecting the model closely I was like hmmm something about these gloves didn't align
