God this pisses me off so fucking much. Is it a small thing at the end of the day? Yeah probably, but it's indicative of a larger problem (that I'll get to eventually, I promise)
to start with the obvious: THE PREVIOUS DISCRIMINATOR SYSTEM WAS PERFECTLY FINE AND IN FACT THE BETTER OPTION OF THE TWO. In fact, it's so much of a better solution, that literally every other platform has started transition to this system if they don't already use it. Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, and even individual games like Guild Wars 2 or Neverwinter Online have either used this system or since adopted it. And y'know what? It fucking works. Really well in fact!
Literally no one has ever complained about it, in fact I've only ever seen praise because it means they don't have to fuck around with the old (and I do mean OLD) problem of having to fuck around with your username to make sure it's not taken.
"Easier to connect with your friends" - John Discord Yeah fuck off with that actual blatant lie. This makes it harder to do that, because now you can't just use your standardised username with a couple numbers at the end, you have to fuck around with it in extra ways that makes it harder for the user to remember, and makes it harder to find specific people.
This is the very fucking definition of "a solution looking for a problem" and I'm willing to bet that the people who actually have to implement this change are all sitting there going "this is fucking stupid, causing a bunch of problems, and not actually improving anything" but too fucking bad, John Discord has demanded from up high that it has to be, and so it is!
Why? Because it's not enough to just have a good piece of software that works anymore. No, you have to be constantly "improving" it and changing it to appease fucking shareholders. "Good enough" isn't good enough anymore, neither is "works really well and doesn't need to change." Because now things need to change to make it seem like things are going well. And that's fucking bullshit.
It feels like Discord has forgotten why it got popular. Y'know what was popular before Discord? Skype. Want to know what happened to Skype? They kept introducing bullshit changes that no one wanted and no one liked, so they jumped ship to the next best platform.
What's happening to Discord? They keep implementing changes that no one wants and that no one likes. How long, John Discord, do you think you'll last before someone else comes along? You're not too big to fail. Learn your fucking history.
Sure, this is a small change really in the grand scheme of things. One that massively hurts its usability, but a small one none-the-less. What's the next big change they're going to make that no one asked for, just because they have to start creating problems to then sell the solution for?
We've already seen where this leads other pieces of software that have since died.
Tumblr media
oh gee discord should I try adding numbers? should I try that???? should I try adding numbers to the end of my username so that it's individualized and only mine???? should I try adding numbers??????????

Who’s Spying on You the Most? Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, or Steam? Let’s Find Out!
Hey everyone! Let’s talk about something we all know but don’t always think about: tech companies spying on us. Yeah, it’s no secret that our devices and apps are constantly collecting data, but have you ever wondered who’s doing it the most? Is it Microsoft? Google? Nvidia? Steam? Or maybe even EA? I decided to run a little experiment to find out, and the results were… eye-opening. The…

Treat anything on Discord as media that will be lost
Do not use Discord to host your files. Do not rely on Discord to preserve your text. DO NOT RELY ON DISCORD FOR ANY KIND OF PRESERVATION OR HOSTING!!
It CAN be lost, it WILL be lost! You must consider Discord as a part of the Core Internet, controlled by one company that hosts the servers.
I thought it was impressive at first that it replaced IRC, but now I am horrified. If the company behind Discord went under today, how many friends would you lose?
How many relationships? How much writing?
You may think this won't happen, but I remember when AIM went down and along with it, entire novels worth of interaction with my oldest friend.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. NO COMPANY IS INFALLIBLE.
Back up your files! Download anything you've saved to Discord NOW, before the API changes go into effect! And DO NOT RELY ON THEM FOR HOLDING IMPORTANT FILES!

twitter: currently owned by techbro pissman
tumblr: actively removing functionality and bloating the interface with things nobody uses
discord: being retooled by ex-Meta management who don't understand the appeal of the platform
youtube: neutered by advertisers and algorithms and also tiktokification
reddit: half of the site is down due to protests about the outrageous monetization of third-party API support
facebook: my mom is on there

Welcome to Something Eternal: A Website Forum in 2023 wtf lmao
Tumblr media
It's 2023, and a single belligerent rich guy destroyed one of the primary focal points of uh...global communication. Tumblr is, shockingly, kinda thriving despite the abuse it gets from its owners, but that I will call the iconic refusal of Tumblr users to let Tumblr get in the way of their using Tumblr. Reddit killed its API, removing the functionality of mobile apps that made it remotely readable (rip rif.) Discord, our current primary hangout, has made countless strange choices lately that indicate it has reached the summit of its usability and functionality, and can only decline from here as changes get made to prepare for shareholders. (NOTE: WROTE THIS POST BEFORE THEIR MOBILE "REDESIGN" LMAO)
The enshittification is intense, and it's coming from every direction. Social media platforms that felt like permanent institutions are instead slowly going to let fall fallow incredible amounts of history, works of art, thought, and fandoms. It kinda sucks!
A couple years ago, I posted about a new plan with a new domain, to focus on the archiving of media content, as I saw that to be the fatal weakness of the current ways the internet and fandoms work. Much has happened since to convince me to alter the direction of those efforts, though not abandon them entirely.
Long story short? We are launching a fucking website forum. In 2023.
If you remember In the Rose Garden, much about Something Eternal will be familiar. But this has been a year in the making, and in many ways it's far more ambitious than IRG was. We have put money on this. The forum is running on the same software major IT and technology businesses use, because I don't want the software to age out of usability within five years. It has an attached gallery system for me to post content to, including the Chiho Saito art collection. It has a profile post system that everyone already on the forum has decided is kinda like mini Twitter? But it is, fundamentally, a website forum, owned and run and moderated by us. We are not web devs. But we have run a website on pure spite and headbutting code for over twenty years, and we have over a decade of experience maintaining social spaces online, both on the OG forum, and on our Discord. Better skilled people with far more time than we have can and will build incredible alternatives to what is collapsing around us. But they're not in the room right now. We are. And you know what? Maybe it's time to return to a clunkier, slower moving, more conversation focused platform.
You're not joining a social media platform with the full polish of dozens of devs and automated moderation. Things might break, and I might need time to fix them. The emojis and such are still a work in progress. Because e-mails no longer route in reasonable normal ways, the sign-up process instead happens within the software, and has to be approved by mods. Design and structure elements may change. Etc. The point being, that the forum isn't finished, but it is at a place where I feel like I can present it to people, and it's people I need to help direct what functions and things will be in this space. You all will shape its norms, its traditions, its options...choices I could try to make now, but really...they're for us to create as a group! But the important stuff? That's there. Now let's drive this baby off the damn lot already!
Come! Join us!!
PS. As always, TERFs and Nazis need not apply.
