Me, every time I buy my season ticket for the state theatre company: urgh like $250 eight play package comes out to $32 per show, and that’s for the Under 30 concession, like no wonder it’s just industry peeps and old people who see theatre these days
Me, deciding I’m finally going to see some ballet and opera this year: okay, so the season package is… Jesus Christ Why Is This Twice The Money For Half The Shows. Why does the opera not have Under 30 or even youth tickets. You’re breaking the cost down by show, you’re showing it to me, why is this one where the music is prerecorded twice the price of this one where music live half the time and the same price as one where it’s only recorded music for matinee. Are instrumentalists not your biggest cost?? Is personnel not your biggest cost?????
#NOTICE FOR IF THIS POST BREACHES CONTAINMENT: I work in + am getting PhD in performing arts#unfortunately keeping up to date with the ~scene~ is part of my job#with that said#to be fair and balanced I got a further discount on my shows bc I got a refund from last years cancelations which means#*refund on my theatre package#five ballet shows was exactly double the price I paid#(once I’d gotten the U30 discount which was not initially visible)#and the children’s ballet (so cheapest) was still $45!!#pros of opera: season package allows you the same % discount on whatever type of seat#(ballet it’s 15-20% off second tier tickets which does make it marginally cheaper than just getting the worst tier seats but like… c’mon )#so opera was four shows for around $50 a piece BUT they were all me picking the worst tier of seating and being full time student#and again they played the mind came of knocking $10-20 off when I got to the end and said of was a student (i.e. tickets were $60-70)#*mind game#also at my state theatre company if you have the full eight show package you can basically call and be like ‘🥺 can I move my ticket’#and they’ll just do it#in my experience ballet is like ‘you paid $90 for a student ticket but fuck you’#(to be clear I mean move the date you’re seeing the show)#and where the company has teired seating the season tickets get the best seats for their night on a first come first served basis#anyway capitalism was a mistake UBI now and subsidise the arts#(like these are all the state companies so I guess I mean Subsidise It More)#it me

Hi! Long-time follower here ig lmao. I'm moving to Chicago next week, any recommendations for stuff (to do/eat/see/go, etc.)?
oh lol this is such a huge question! and it also depends which area you're moving to. ummmm if you like theatre, there's a TON, more than i can keep track of tbh. but if you want something cool and late-night, the neo-futurists is a very Chicago thing to do. i think the two most famous regional theatres in chicago are the goodman and steppenwolf. they both do great work, and they're a good starting point. also shout out to the court theatre, blank theatre company, theatre wit, trap door theatre, a red orchid theatre, and lyric opera. i've adored at least one show from each of these companies (and they all do VERY different work).
in my neighborhood (andersonville), check out the bookstores women and children first, and uncharted books. and if you like thrifting, check out brown elephant. (i'm also addicted to going to tuesday night piano karaoke at elixir in andersonville lol. if you end up going sometime, there's like a 50% chance i'll be there)
the chicago symphony is where i spend most of my evenings these days tbh (the promo code "student" will get you a ticket discount lol)
the art institute is just as good as you've heard. the MCA also rules.
some of my personal favorite live music venues are: SPACE in Evanston, Old Town School of Folk Music, city winery in the loop, and constellation. i like these venues because they have chairs and i'm tired of going to concerts where i'm constantly bumping into twinks with $12 white claws, but also because they program great music at relatively affordable prices.
if you like dancing/nightlife, i like sidetrack, queen on sunday nights at smartbar (amazing djs), a diy queer drag party called boots (they're on instagram), and berlin (berlin is where the cool queers go, and has arguably the best drag in chicago--keep in mind it does get a bit crowded and claustrophobic). (NVM, BERLIN WORKERS JUST ANNOUNCED THEY’RE ON STRIKE, SO DON’T GO THERE LOL). the drag competition on thursday nights at charlie's is also a fabulous time.
oh and if you like going to movies, you have to check out the gene siskel film center (the best programming in the city), the music box (the COOLEST movie theatre in the city), and facets. be sure to look into the series (serieses?) that these theatres program—they do a lot of fabulous screenings of older movies, and also some great film festivals. i also go to the alamo drafthouse a lot for convenience, even tho they piss me off. but they do sometimes have cool programming.
that's what i got off the top of my head!!! congrats on the move, i love chicago and i hope you do too!!!

how do you see so many shows so often? I want to start seeing more shows but I don’t know where to find really cheap tickets
This is my favorite question and the answer is actually not rush or lottery. I never pay full-price for anything unless it's a very rare circumstance (like the Follies concert where I didn't care what I paid so long as I was in that room).
Here's what you need to do:
TDF: $35 yearly membership fee (first year only, after that it's $40) for the best discounts across NYC theatre. Tickets cost between ~$11-$60, depending on the class, and seats are assigned by the box office. I've been able to sit prime orchestra in seats costing hundreds for about $60. It's gotten a little pricier over the years (used to be $54 for a Broadway musical back in 2019, now it's $63, including fees). Membership is closed to specific groups/communities, but nearly everyone is eligible. It pays for itself within a show or two, so it's worth it.
Age-based discounts: the non-profit Broadway companies all have some sort of "30 under X" discount for young theatergoers. Many off-Broadway companies have really great student/under 30 deals too if you just do some searching before you buy.
Second Stage is "30 under 30" and I've found that by buying the season subscription (five shows for $150, so same price as single ticket sales), I get access to much better seating choices. Can be ordered online or at box office (sans fees). The shows are a mix of two Broadway, and two or three off-Broadway, and possibly a small fringe show thrown in depending on the season. Last season it was two Broadway and three off.
MTC is "30 under 35" and consistently has great shows. Can be ordered online or at box office (sans fees). The MTC's theatre (Friedman) has the most comfortable mezzanine seats in all of Broadway. Plush, high back, wide. It's luxury. And the side seating has pretty good sightlines, so there's not a bad seat.
Roundabout has the most generous one at "30 under 40" with their HipTix program, and this also eschews any fees even when ordering online. It's the easiest out of the three, though slightly more restrictive in what seats are offered. Never sit in the rear mezzanine of either the Todd Haimes or Studio 54 theatres. Bad times for very different reasons. Go side orchestra every time.
All three of these programs allow two tickets per show, though some won't allow guests of any age and some will.
Comp Tickets: There are a few paid programs you can join to get access to free (with a $5 per-show ticket fee) tickets. Last year I did TheatremaniaGold for $80, and this year WillCallClub for $15. Neither are really worth it, if you ask me. Most of the shows are the weird little fringe things that aren't selling, and while that may be fun, it doesn't really end up being great if you want to see Broadway unless it's a Big Flop. The Broadway shows I've seen listed include: Bad Cinderella, The Shark is Broken, and Lempicka, to name a few.
I'm also somehow on some comp lists where I get emails every now and then to see shows for free. I cannot tell you how to get on these lists, because I didn't do anything. It just happened. That's how I got to see Kimberly Akimbo so many times for free.
In-Person Box Office: If I have to get a ticket outside of these avenues, I always go to the box office to save on the online fees, which can be anywhere from $9 to $17, and that's money I want for me, not the predatory sites like telecharge and ticketmaster.
NYU ScholasTix: As an NYU alumnus, I get access to the school's discount program, but I've found the tickets aren't that discounted, and the seats are bad. And also you have to go all the way downtown to the NYU box office at Skirball Center to pick them up instead of going to the theatre box office before showtime. I hate it, and it's inaccessible, and the accessibility service is garbage, so I don't do this unless there are no other options (i.e. really popular Broadway play that won't ever be on TDF). Many city schools have similar programs, and you should definitely check because they don't advertise well.
Rush/Lottery: Every now and then, I'll do a digital lottery or rush. I don't do it in person because I just can't with my knees. Also, I have an adult job and can't just stand around the box office at ten in the morning. Shubert Broadway shows use the telecharge rush system. Jujamcyn/Ambassador use Lucky Seat for lottery only. Nederlander shows use Broadway Direct. Then there's the off-Broadway companies and non-profits that use the TodayTix app, and that one's a bitch to win, but hey, it's possible.
Seatplan: If you're like me and see too much Broadway, you can start uploading seat pictures to SeatPlan to earn rewards points. Every 4,400 points, and you get a free $50 telecharge gift card. Depending on how many points you earn per show (between 40-120), you can get a card every 36-50 shows, so that's easily one a year for me.
Other programs I don't use include:
The Theatr app, which is a new thing where people can sell tickets their not using either at cost or discounted, so it's never a situation where resellers profit. Anyone trying to sell fraudulently is immediately removed, and their customer service is pretty quick on the trigger.
TKTS booths at Times Square and at Lincoln Center. Those are day-of tickets usually going for 30-70% off depending on the show. I've gotten tickets through them before, but I don't stand in lines anymore. It's decent for the tourists though.

i used to work at a movie theatre that had a tcby outlet, there weren't any other tcbys in my city except in other movie theaters owned by the same company. i was one of the most experienced employees at the tcby before it shut down (bc the company bought out alocal self-serve froyo business so they wouldnt have to pay royalties or w/e)
anyway a few years later i went to the states to go shopping with my family and there was a full tcby store, not even an outlet so obviously i had to go check it out, see all the old products i used to make and reminisce so i mentioned to the person working that i used to work a tcby outlet back home at a movie theatre and she was INSTANTLY like "OH, so you get the employee discount" and my $6.00 ice cream was like $2.00 instead TCBY girl, wherever you are, i hope you are living your best life

How to Dance in Ohio is going to BROADWAY! Also, hi, I'm Ashley.
So I guess I should start using this account to talk about it, and tell the people who I am and what I'm about.
I'm told that Tumblr is the go-to platform these days for people who just want to blog like we did in the Old Internet Days, but also have an audience that includes people under the age of Limewire. Sooo here I am.
The briefing: I'm Ashley Wool, I live in NYC, and I'm playing Jessica in the upcoming Broadway musical How to Dance in Ohio. I've wanted to be on Broadway ever since I was old enough to know what that meant. I was diagnosed in 2008 with what was at the time called Asperger's syndrome--I don't use that term anymore for many reasons, which I'll probably get into at a later date--and I thought that being autistic spelled certain death for my performing career. So I didn't talk about it for over a decade.
My decision to start talking about it more publicly was catalyzed when Greta Thunberg started becoming a public figure. When I was a kid, I was hardcore invested in anything related to environmental conservation. 50 Simple Things You Can Do To Save the Earth was basically my Bible. In fifth grade, for a science project, I recreated the greenhouse effect using glass jars to demonstrate the impact of climate change to my peers. As you can probably imagine, I was bullied pretty mercilessly--and this was long before anybody had floated "autism" as a possibility for me. I just knew I was "weird." When I saw that happening to Greta on a worldwide scale, and saw people using her autistic neurology (which she was out and proud about) as an excuse to disparage and discredit her further, I realized how cowardly I had been to allow my own internalized ableism to keep me in the disclosure closet. If this brave and brilliant teenage girl could own her neurology in the face of millions of haters, who the heck was I to not stand up and be counted as an autistic person in front of a comparatively tiny audience of Facebook friends, most of whom already knew me and loved me?
It took me a while to find my footing as an autistic self-advocate, to work out the most productive ways to use my voice within and around those circles, but I think I have a pretty good handle on it nowadays. Like any autistic person, I've got plenty of trauma stories, but I never wanted to be the "trauma influencer" who centered my advocacy around my own negative experiences and talked over people who thought or felt differently about similar experiences they or their children have had. I also never wanted to deny or discount the privilege I experience as a cis white woman who is verbal and able-bodied and grew up in Westchester County and always had support systems for the struggles I do face, financial and otherwise.
Indeed, I hope that a cornerstone of my advocacy will be championing all the support systems I was lucky enough to have, and making sure that I do everything in my power to help differently-marginalized autistic people of all ages (and the people who love them, educate them, and employ them) receive the same support.
I hope that people will look at the success I've managed to achieve and instead of attributing it exclusively to my "being talented and working hard and never giving up," they will say, "this is what an autistic person can achieve when they are accommodated and supported, and autistic people don't need to be originating roles on Broadway like Ashley Wool or winning Nobel Peace Prizes like Greta Thunberg or [insert high achievement here] to be inherently worthy of that support."
Mostly, I just want to let the world know that autistic people already exist in every conceivable industry and every conceivable circle. Including musical theatre.

“For all of that, the notion that Alberta’s politics stifles all dissent, or made queer life impossible was not historically accurate. This research illustrates how the largely middle-class activists and organizers strove to make it safe... to be queer in Edmonton. And it makes plain how much further they had to go than their peers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.” “It is suggestive of the challenges of being queer in Edmonton that so much energy and resources went into counselling individuals struggling with their sexual orientation and negotiating the commensurate identities issues.”
this is very hard hitting to me because waking up today in this reality was an ordeal. but it makes me think a lot.
i don’t want to glamourize or valourize the difficulty of being queer in the “tough” city too much because i don’t want to fall into the trap of queer life in edmonton = suffering only but. at the same time it makes me reflect a lot on how i’ve perceived and chosen to personify and characterize my city (is it mine yet? has it always been?) in art over the years and so rambles about that follow
i designed Ed in sub-rural high school a few years after returning to Canada from post 9/11 midwestern America when i was filled with this dissatisfaction of being "home” only to discover that my life was matching next to none of the imagined past i had growing up in Edmonton, and trying to reconcile the gap between this mythical multicultural utopia in the Big City just out of my reach that existed only in my memory and this growing awareness of the rest of Canada looking down on us as a province and as a city- as I discovered firsthand in a rural k-9 school (which even this past year was subject to a horrific hate crime), this was not an entirely undeserved reputation.
of course during this time i was dealing with several battles that didn’t occur to me until later as having any real impact on who i was: all my classmates assuming upon barely interacting with me that i was a lesbian on the grounds of not admitting to liking anyone Ever; being referred to as “that” because my gender expression was considered deviant by my peers; grappling with the sexual deviance associated with hobbies at the time that were far far far from the mainstream at this point (anime and online social networks! gasp); protesting bill 44 without a second thought as to how people would perceive me after; coming out as asexual to relative strangers in a time where there were still only 2.5 orientations and identities barely spoken aloud; and graduating (finally!) into Big City University where I was struggling to reconcile things like being a notorious atheist completely against religious fundamentalism with my Not a Sexuality TM with my Yaoi is for Perverts Which I Am Not with my Feminism is Too Political For Me and so on and so forth.
(so you can see why when i was stepping between ultra religious conservative alberta and weird lefty university life i made these characters somewhat ironically with all the yaoi tropes and demanded that they not be shipped together. lmao. what was i thinking honestly. was it a challenge for others or for me? was it the start of a dialogue or the end of one?)
and sequestered as i was in my little southside university life a certain born and raised Edmontonian from an inner city north side school background, as desperate to escape the city as i was to be repatriated to it, decided this was insufficient and thrust me into directly confronting the fears and anxieties i had picked up through osmosis of Scary Downtown Edmonton. It’s not really a coincidence that the two major changes in Ed’s design (his queerness and his Indigeneity) happened at northside transit stops, both at night, in the company of the incorrigible quatschmachen). I remember us joking about Ed as “the gay cousin” after a particular journey to a discount theatre with a distinct sketchy reputation just a hop skip and a jump from the industrial, uh, charm of the meat packing plants and Belvedere LRT station and, naturally, it stuck. The myth in my head was beginning to grasp onto the realities that I had once been disenchanted by and was desperate to cover up. And it stuck.
And it stuck and I spent a long time “justifying” it in my head, because you have to remember up until this point that personifying a place with any “difference” (in ethnicity, ability, etc) or acknowledging the real struggles of being queer in a place outside of the sacrilegiously gay-and-silly and yes subversive heta-verse... it wasn’t acceptable in fandom. It was rarely done and when it was it was often met with extremely virulent hostility, hostility in similar-but-different ways to the hostility i faced for accidentally expressing “difference” that I didn’t realize I was expressing in rural backwater Alberta.
And it stuck and suddenly it became a gateway into this secret untold history of the city.
And maybe I will write more about that as my research progresses. but there you go, a little insight into why I designed Ed the way I did and why I’ve upheld that particular characterization for all these years. And now a decade after designing him exist the citations to back up my choices, on one hand, and the resolve to keep fighting, to keep writing that history in spite of these odds that look insurmountable from the outside.
it’s tough being the tough city but the battles are worth fighting. and that’s why i do what i do.

A3! Settsu Banri - Translation [SSR] MANKAI Party (2/3)
Tumblr media
*Please read disclaimer on blog
---
Tenma: Alright, I’m rolling the camera. Aaand… start!
Banri: Yo, it’s Autumn troupe’s Settsu Banri. Today, I got Tenma to come shoppin’ with me as we search for a pair of sneakers I was dying to get. That bein’ said, Tenma’s also in charge of the camera. Thanks, Tenma.
Tumblr media
Tenma: Yeah, leave it to me.
-pause-
Banri: Oh, those pants are nice. I like their shape.
Tenma: The jacket next to them caught my eye.
Tumblr media
Banri: Ah. You wanted a leather jacket, right? That’d be nice to throw on and go on motorcycle ride.
Tenma: Should I try it on?
Banri: Knock yourself out. …Hold up, now that I realize, we’re buyin’ loads of autumn clothes.
Tenma: Oh, you’re right. I end up wanting to buy lots of different stuff when I go shopping with you, Banri-san.
Banri: ‘Cept we haven’t found the main point, the sneakers, or the sight I wanna show my fans.
Tenma: This’ll become a purely shopping VLOG, huh…
Banri: What should we do… Ah well. For now, let’s check out the jacket and grab some coffee somewhere.
Vulgar man: You’re the one who bumped into me!
High school boy: I-I’m so sorry…!
Tenma: !?
Tumblr media
Banri: A fight? I’m curious, but we’re in the middle of the street so I’m sure the cops will—. Hey, that guy who’s gettin’ pestered…
Tenma: Is that… Hana High’s uniform?
Banri: …Well, I can just stop ‘em, right? Tenma, cut the camera for a sec.
Tenma: Got it.
-pause-
High school boy: Thank you so much for saving me!
Banri: No prob. The other dude ran away quickly, so I’m glad it didn’t turn into a scene.
Tumblr media
High school boy: U-um… you’re Banri-senpai, right?
Banri: You know me?
High school boy: Of course I do! MANKAI Company’s Banri-senpai, and also Sakuya-senpai and Masumi-senpai. You’re Hana High’s celebrities! I admire you guys too… I’m supporting you!
Banri: I see. Thanks.
High school boy: Same here. I can’t thank you enough…! I’ll visit your theatre to watch your play next time!
Banri: Sure, I’ll be waitin’.
High school boy: Okay…! Well then, please excuse me…!
Tenma: He said you three are celebrities at school.
Banri: Hana High, huh… I’m startin’ to feel hella nostalgic now that I saw that uniform and talked with him. Come to think of it, I’ve gone with Masumi and Sakuya to buy some curry buns at a shop around here after school before. Then on the way home, Sakuya—. ! …Right, it’s all coming back to me.
-pause-
Banri: Hell yeah! Bagged the limited-edition sneakers.
Tenma: Who knew they’d be at a discount shoe store Sakuya told you about.
Tumblr media
Banri: I know, right?
Tenma: It’s so close to O High, but I had no idea that shop existed.
Banri: Same here. I used to wander aimlessly around this area all the time back in my Hana High days. But I had no clue there was a shop like this until I heard from Sakuya. All I did was fight back then~.
Tenma: You’re still fighting with Juza-san even now, aren’t you?
Banri: Ahh? No I’m not. That’s his fault for chargin’ at me, got it? But speakin’ of which, this spot is—. … …Tenma, record around this area. This is a memorable spot from my high school days.
Tenma: …You got it.
-pause-
Banri: …It sure feels good findin’ what you were looking for, doesn’t it? …And so, that’s the end of my VLOG. Thanks for watchin’.
Tenma: …Alright, I’ve stopped the camera. Good job.
Banri: G’job.
Tenma: …Hey, I can ask now that the shoot is over, right? About this spot…
Banri: Back when I had nothin’ to get passionate about and all I did was fight… This is where I picked a fight with Hyodo and he threw me down in an instant. So, this spot is the place where I tasted defeat for the first time… And where I finally encountered what I had always been lookin’ for.
Tenma: So that’s it.
Banri: It’s embarrasin’, so there’s no way I’m telling anyone else.

A theater company born out of the pandemic will soon start rehearsals for its first mainstage production of 2023. On May 25, The Legacy Theatre will debut the world premiere of “Masters of Puppets,” a riveting drama by Laurence Davis that explores the dirty underbelly of professional wrestling.
A brief history
The aptly-named Legacy Theatre was one of the few companies producing shows following the first full year of the COVID-19 lockdown, according to Managing Director Jeff Provost. Before they set up shop in the former Stony Creek Playhouse — a historic haunt of Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre Players — Legacy staged productions at the nearby Stony Creek Museum and outdoors on the Guilford and Branford greens.
Co-Founders Keely Baisden Knudsen and Stephanie Stiefel Williams spearheaded the company’s renovation of the playhouse while preserving its “fabled history,” Provost said. And while audiences were slow to return amid pandemic-era restrictions, the theater’s production mix proved successful.
“Keely has made a commitment since Day One to do at least one new play as part of our mainstage series,” Provost said. “It really tells you how daring and willing we are as a theater company to explore new ideas and works onstage.”
‘Masters of Puppets’
Davis’ work follows a husband and wife (played by Kurt Fuller of CBS’s “Evil” and Amanda Detmer of Fox’s “Empire”) who are “the masters” of a large-scale wrestling organization, Provost said. The couple engage in a power struggle with an executive from the professional sports network (played by Dana Ashbrook of Showtime’s “Twin Peaks”) over who’s pulling the proverbial strings.
“There’s always been questions as to what’s real and what’s fake in the world of wrestling, and those questions continue to this day,” Provost said. “This piece explores the topic in a really thought-provoking way. It’s a gritty, no-holds-barred approach to the subject matter.”
“Masters of Puppets” comes to the Legacy stage via James Roday Rodriguez (of ABC’s “A Million Little Things”), who will assist Legacy behind the scenes as a producer. Rodriguez and Knudsen grew up together; they performed alongside each other in middle school and eventually studied together as undergraduate students at New York University. Director Gabe McKinley was at NYU with them as well.
Provost explained that Rodriguez initially intended to produce the show with a theater company out in Los Angeles, but then COVID hit. Rodriguez connected with Knudsen about debuting “Puppets” at Legacy, and the rest, they say, is history.
“All of these connections and relationships that James has in the industry will play out really beautifully in this production,” Provost added. “The actors know each other very well and already have that base established.”
The world premiere of “Masters of Puppets” debuts at The Legacy Theatre on Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m. Performances run through June 11, with shows on Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.
Tickets are on sale now; season subscribers receive a 25 percent discount. For more information, visit www.LegacyTheatreCT.org.
[Anyone who wants to go please heed the content warning on their website: For mature audiences. Contains violence, harsh language, and drug use. There is no puppetry in the production.]
