Deepak must have known this years ago when a group of instructors met for our annual retreat. We were preparing for our first trip to India that Fall and we were concerned about the water, the food, etc, etc. When we started asking all of our questions, he smiled and said, “Well, the first thing you need to know is that your experience is going to match your expectations.”

I recently re-read The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra.

The first time I read the book, I was angry. Still, I decided to give it another shot, especially since a few of the “Laws” align with topics I’ve been discussing in therapy.

Unfortunately, it’s true: you feel lighter, more at peace and comfortable in your own skin when you stop judging - be it people, situations, or circumstances. That said, I still don’t agree with everything I read in the book - I haven't even gotten around to digesting it all. I’m also still figuring out how to navigate situations that genuinely make me angry, like hearing homophobic or transphobic remarks or witnessing harmful behaviour.

But I’m slowly learning how to stay true to my beliefs while keeping a calm mind. People don't really like being around you, nor will they listen to you, if you act all combative and with a negative mindset (most people don't want to hear the truth).

I may sound like a toddler learning to walk right now, but it turns out that emotional intelligence is tough as hell, and there is much more to it than I thought. It's definitely a very humbling journey. Still, I’m glad I can now recognize my own flaws without beating myself up over them. I’m learning, growing, and doing my best not to repeat old mistakes. I’m even ready to make a few new ones.
