Comic #327: Moist - Website links: Here! This is my first tango with eczema (Dishydrosis technically) flared up all over my hands & I am discovering the horrors of having perpetually slippery grabbers. My devices thankfully have survived their many falls 🥲 thankfully I am not drawing full time right now 🐻💧

I was trying to find some of the oldest descriptions of "dishydrosis" to learn why they initially named it that, and I gave up after finding a silly little column in a journal from 1876 where one scientist is bemoaning another for naming it "dishydrosis" without having proof that the name isn't a misnomer. Why am I giving up? Because that's as far as science ever got with it, as far as I can find or as far as my doctor could tell me.
It seems like we never did figure out which layer of the skin is affected, or exactly what's going on. Over a century of technological advancements, and instead of medical research, we have Star Link.
Maybe I'm wrong and the knowledge is out there somewhere. But my only means of finding it at this moment is the internet; and I'm tired of rummaging through websites who think it's normal to charge $50 to access an article from 1876.

I've been clenching my jaw so hard lately... caught myself doing it too many times and it's worsening my headaches - also giving me slight toothaches as soon as I unclench it. anyways, stress has been HIGH and I hate that my body is so quick to show it

This weather is killong me its so dry so fucking dry and also super dusty so like i either go out looking ashy and skin looks like shit or i go hidrated and get my pores all clogged up with dust and my skin eventually also looks like shit. Or a mix of both.
Whats worse is also that because of dishydrosis my palms both already look like shit. And im losing sense of touch. Like this part at least i know will get back to normal when im feeling less stressed. But all.of this at the same time is so exhausting.

I should make this an FAQ cause I do mention it a lot and it spawns a lot of questions whenever I do
I'm allergic to dairy. I'm not lactose intolerant, I'm genuinely allergic.
I'm allergic to one or more of the proteins in milk (casein and/or whey), since allergies are a reaction to proteins. Lactose is a sugar, and as far as I know you can't be allergic to it.
However, if you don't have dairy in a long time, you will have gastric problems if you consume it, so it also can cause that for me.
My allergic reaction is eczema. I'd never had clear skin since I was born until I went totally off of dairy when I was 18 and it cleared up completely within a month. It used to be really bad, I'd have it everywhere on my body and even wearing full-length clothing couldnt cover it up, it was on my face, the corners of my lips, my eyelids, hands, everywhere.
Don't need to go back to that, so I try to avoid dairy. I once accidentally drank a milk protein smoothie and my hands immediately erupted in dishydrosis, a type of eczema. So that's pretty clear-cut as well.
I was having moderate amounts of dairy, but it seems like my tolerance has lowered, so I have to cut it out totally again.
My hands are very itchy right now

A happy story. I still bite my cheeks and lips and pick at the dishydrosis on my fingers, but I have managed to mostly stop face-picking and my skin is clearer than ever, even my formerly bumpy forehead is smooth again. Just wanted to share hope.
Hello thanks for writing. Congrats on being able to recover some control from your BFRBs! Recovery is not a straight line and there will be some setbacks. It’s normal! So try not to beat yourself up if you do have a setback. Thanks for sharing your encouraging story. Hope all is well with you.

Different post from usual but i wanted to share some info on my skin condition, this is why i cant draw very much right now.
When i put this on my insta story my friend messaged me saying they had the same thing but their doctor couldnt figure out what it was!! So I hope sharing it here can also help someone and also just let ppl know about my condition cause it makes art really hard sometimes😖
If you experience this, anti inflammatory medications and foods can help you! Stuff like tylenol, aleve, or off brand of those over the counter drugs can reduce swelling. Eating leafy greens, tuna, salmon, and nuts are also anti inflammatory if you can afford them!
Thanks for reading and I hope the post was useful to some of you❤❤

for some kinda gross context, this is what a (current) eczema flare looks like for me. it’s not as red and angry as it could be if i’d eaten a trigger food, used hand soap or stressed myself out, but it’s still pretty bad. this will probably stay like this for weeks to a month, but while it’s resolving i will have other patches develop, sometimes on the other hand. it can be debilitating, and it’s a big motivator behind some of the lifestyle changes i have made since beginning to pursue a career in natural medicine - steroid creams are simply not a long term possibility, so diet, healing the gut, herbs and homeopathics are my focus for now!

CAMPING?!?!
Hello friends. I am writing this blog post from a cute little cabin on a campground somewhere very, very far from home. Camping? With eczema? Why not? Aside from sweating (which dries my skin and leaves me feeling like a strip of flaky beef jerky) and dishydrosis on my palms, I'm actually doing well. Sure, some of my lesions itch like mad (I'm looking at you, armpit rash!) but I'm actually doing pretty well. Last night, however, my mom and I had a fight within the first five minutes of arriving at the camp. I started having a panic attack, shouted some choice words, and ran out the front door, trying not to look like a dying idiot as I trekked to where there used to be an open field, but they'd filled the area with cabins and RV's and soon enough I was sobbing on the edge of a trailer park, furiously texting my best friend and staring up at the stars and hating everything, myself included. My mom texted me 2 hours later and said dinner would be ready at 9 and to be back by then. I reluctantly returned, downed my share of pasta and ground beef, and went to the loft bedroom I would be sharing with the eldest of my two little brothers. Then, as I was just preparing to get into bed (a mattress on the floor, two feet below the ceiling) I saw it. A cockroach was perched on the ceiling, just above my head. I, of course, flipped out and my family's response was to tell me to get over it. The roach had crawled off and everyone just wanted to sleep. Now this wasn't the first insect in my bed that night. I'd previously found two grasshoppers on it, which I angrily pounded at with my shoes. I ended up sharing my brothers bed (I didn't tell him, I waited for him to fall asleep before joining him) and he woke up at 5 am, moved to the other bed, and made sure to give me an earful in the morning. It is now camping day 2 and I am plodding through my homework and searching the area vigilantly for more insect infiltrators.
