the wind is gentle against your face when you leave the coffee shop, and you wrap your scarf a little tighter around your neck. jongseob pulls you aside, not to block the entrance, and dives into his bag to look for headphones. you hold his drink and take a small sip. 

the vanilla flavor explodes on your tongue and you just grin, taking another sip of the sweet beverage. maybe he won’t notice–

“it’s a bit too sweet, to be honest. do you want to finish it?” he asks and you realize he’s been watching you, gaze amused from behind his glasses. the red oval frames cutely frame his face, almost distracting from the fact that you just got caught. 

“no, you can have it” you sigh and trade. he hands you one earphone, you give him the drink back. (it wasn’t too sweet, really. jongseob just said that so you could finish it without feeling guilty). you accept the earphone and put it in your left ear, grabbing his hand. 

“do you want to watch something once we get back?” he asks softly before putting on one of his rap playlists. you pucker your lips in thought and miss the way he smiles fondly at the sight.

“maybe… i still have to finish that one kdrama my friend recommended but i don’t really feel like it’ you say and start your journey back to the dorm. 

the music isn’t playing too loud - despite the energetic tune and some… unusual lyrics, it serves as a background to your conversation. jongseob intertwines fingers with yours, seeking a little more warmth on the chilly day. 

“maybe we can rewatch the maze runner…?” he offers and you just scoff. your boyfriend takes another sip of his vanilla cappuccino and hides a smile behind the cup.

“i’m just gonna finish it and throw it out” he says and drinks the coffee, doing as he said. 

meanwhile you successfully lure the cat, the feline approaching you carefully. it sniffs your hand, soft nose poking your skin. jongseob observes with a proud smile. 

the cat plops on its back, showing its white belly to you. 

with a loud whine, you start to pat its belly.

“seob, oh my god!” you mumble, pout forming on your lips. the fur is soft beneath your palm and your boyfriend joins you again, his hand petting the cat’s head. 

“do you think we can steal it?” he asks, hopeful sparkle in his eye. 

you bite your lip, looking at him. 

“i’m really gullible, you should stop making offers like that” you laugh and he just snickers, hand moving to pat its belly too. your fingers occasionally bump into each other, the cat’s loud purring making you chuckle. 

“no, really, what’s stopping us…?” your boyfriend mumbles to himself, adoring the pet’s happy face. 

“jongseob!” you whine, moving to scratch the cat’s chin. it stretches a bit, throwing its head back to give you better access to its chin and neck. “just like you…”

“i don’t purr” he grunts “and i am not a cat”

“mhm…” you decide to ignore his meows of protest “also, i think this cat isn’t a stray. it’s a little too friendly. and it’s cute underbelly tells me its being fed good at home”

“eh, you’re right” jongseob grunts and pats the white belly for the last time “let’s keep going then. before it’s too late”

“too late for what?” you ask, tilting your head. he just opens his bag widely, pretending as if he’s going to swoop the cat in. 

the street fills with your laughters and the cat stands up, startled. jongseob helps you stand up and dusts off your knees while you wave at the cat. 

“bye, kitty” you hum and grab your boyfriend’s hand again. and as you try to persuade him into watching harmony adventure, he keeps wondering when did you manage to change the playlist. 

once back at home, happily watching the content you wanted, jongseob is laying on your lap. his red glasses messily thrown on the nightstand, face buried in the warmth of the duvet covering your legs. 

you sneak your hand into his hair, massaging his scalp gently. one second he’s laughing at a joke he made, the other he’s groaning softly. 

“that feels nice…” he mewls, nuzzling his head. 

“yeah?” you ask with a grin. his limbs stretch a little and jongseob lets out a sigh of relief.

“m’yeah. keep doing that, please… oh, oh, here” he purrs in delight.

“not a cat, you say” you whisper quietly, not wanting him to hear. he doesn’t, luckily - and you decide to tease him about it later. something along the lines of ‘who needs a cat when i have you’.

It Was Worth It, Every Bit Of It

One of my dearest cousins was getting married. After missing out on many many occasions as such, I had my mind made up. I was not going to sit this one out. Also, I cannot in a sane state of mind not attend one of the most important days of her life. So, at the first chance, the plans were made, the tickets were booked and right about then the excitement reached a feverish pitch where it remained till the date we travelled. The little one was excited about seeing the grandparents, but more importantly, she was excited about sitting in her little chair and watching the big tv all day long. The wife was excited about the fact that there was a wedding and therefore opportunities to dress up the traditional way. Both of them made a couple of trips while I opted not to. For me, it was the first time since my wedding more than half a decade ago, and the only thing I was excited about was the wedding.

I am not ashamed to say that I was not excited about anything surrounding the occasion. The long flights where the ever shirking leg space seems to have been designed for people shorter than four whole feet weren’t particularly enticing. Neither was the idea of walking out in the dirt and grime every single day I would be there. And particularly unappealing was the idea of falling sick on the second day of the stay. I was really not looking forward to any of that, and I told as much to anyone who asked. However, there was one thing that I was subconsciously looking forward to.

I was going to meet and spend some genuinely good time with some of my close cousins. The kids I grew up with, the boys of the family, the spoiled brats who could all talk about the quirks of the family without holding reservations, the brothers in arms, the partners in crime and all the other cliches that you can think of. These are the boys from whom I have very few secrets to keep. They know all the weird and awkward stories of my insignificant life. So much so that we all laugh at those together and frequently. We take this part of any family gathering for granted, but it was going to be a great reminder that the camaraderie among brothers is replaced by very few other relationships if at all.

Like every occasion that brings a large part of a family together, there was an evening that we managed to sneak in among all the madness that is an Indian wedding. Therein involved a lot of talking, lot of reminiscing in great detail, some Gyan, some solving of problems that were of immense importance for people inside the circle whereas the people outside remained oblivious, and there was some adult beverage involved -- if such detail is important to you that is. The evening started late and ended even later. Needless to say, the evening was one a kind that allowed me to forget all the drudgery of daily life and let me teleport to a time that preceded it. It was an interesting time indeed. We were able to suddenly recall all the minutia of the amusing events through the years. Probably because knowingly or unknowingly, those details never left the active memory space.

Interestingly enough, given the age group I am talking about, not everyone involved was super active on social media. It is fair to say then that we were not entirely up-to-date with all the happenings during the past few years. So, we had some catching up to do. However, that is not the interesting part. The interesting part is that every one of those stories started with: remember so and so person or such and such event, and with every one of those didn’t we only remember like those happened yesterday even if some were from our childhood, but with the slightest hint we also knew exactly where the story was going. It was like we had developed our own secret language that only we understood. What I am eluding to is that this level of synchronicity is the living breathing nucleus that kept us in touch with each other with an unobservable force.

The word camaraderie describes a nebulous concept which for some unknown reason depends on spending a lot of time together. As questioning everything has been a frequent theme on this blog, allow me to keep with the theme. Allow me to question if spending a lot of time together is a non-negotiable requirement. Even if two people don’t spend a lot of time together, do they ever lose touch? When their lives are so intertwined that one knows if the other spits, is there any real effort involved in staying in lockstep with each other without a hint of communication for a while? As I have seen it happen, I think not. And, oh, by the way, all the trouble I talked about, totally worth it. Every bit of it, just for that one evening. The wedding was like the cherry on top.

"Robert, sorry, my crew need to spend some serious time in signal recognition, we are breaking off and standing down."

After both sides had stopped firing I got out of the mech and went over to Robert to try patching up. He was all smiles, "Ah, my boys needed an exercise, and getting a surprise attack like that will teach them to keep on their toes"

We sat down and had a chat about this and that, among other topics the upcoming war:

Sten Hugo Hiller. So how do you think this war will turn out for the AFF. You do have several clans in the war, but can they rise to the top?

Robert C Goetz. To be frank. I think we're outgunned in most divisions... Some movements in clans in divisions hit us just wrong. For example both Collectors and Rangers got bumped down from D3 to D4. Either of them would have won D4 or D3 since best clans in that range. BlackWatch got bumped down to D5...so easy pickins for them...both the Rangers and or Collectors would have enjoyed facing them instead of each other , also makes D3 open now with both of us gone. Now look down few divisions, now here's a fight to watch Revenge vs Diamond DRagons. I'd give edge to Diamond Dragons normally, but they have no specialist so I have to say Revenge has the edge. Look down little further. Disciples are in the same division as Ronins and Renagedes. we have all solid clans. So it will be fun. Look down further. Hecklers they are in a very competitive division,so over all, we should fight for gold in several divisions, but how many will we win? Only time will tell.

Sten Hugo Hiller. An straightforward and honest answer. So do you think the high number of specialists will influence the outcome of many Battles and the end result in the divisions?

Robert C Goetz. Yes. Div 1 is a perfect example. Warlock vs Magnificent7...Warlocks went with 9 members. while Magnificent-7 with 7 and since they have more of the top 10 specialist in the division they should win the Gold. Then go to D2. The Bunnies went with 7 10T specialist, other clans will have to beat all the others and couple of them to beat them, should be fun to watch… And the same goes in other divisions. like I said look at DD vs Revenge no specialist vs 5 specialist...could be the difference maker there..others same way..but not going to run through all clans and divisions here...lol

Sten Hugo Hiller. So, in your mind, is this an improvement over the 2-4 specialists we have normally, letting the weaker clans fight more on their terms, or is it a bad move?

Robert C Goetz. Well don't know that i'd say having 7 specialist being weaker players... I mean sure guess if all the same..like 10t...but I like the 5 for 7 members better myself... But honestly would like clan sizes to increase to at least 8, but prefer maybe 10, and as for divisions.. That's another issue, I would rather see more 4 clan divisions. All these 8 clan divisions cause huge level gaps from top clans average to bottom clans... I know the aurguement that less clans means less silvers and bronze..more wood..but also more golds...but like I said it's about the average gaps from top to bottom of divisions for me

Sten Hugo Hiller. Some have suggested forced specialists. We have had some before, like all clans had to have one specialist of on type (for instance 20 tons) Does this sound like a good idea to you?

Robert C Goetz. Yes. I'd like to see a more varied Specialist for sure. Say you can have up to 5 but 3 must be 10t-20t-30t for example... Or it could be rainbows, or whatever, just have 2-3 that are a must. Rotate each month so people will have to keep a variety of specialist updated, or miss out on those possible points.

Sten Hugo Hiller. Sounds like a workable option, and will as you say force clans to get those formations or forfait lots of wins. There is a rumor going that we might have a Chaos war later in59. I know you cant speak for all Your members, but are they ready and eager for another war, or are they mostly going to sit it out?

Robert C Goetz. We will fight..as always. Might be few not up for another war if close to this one, since so many close together causes a dedication from the guys that normally do only wars, and once a month is what they like. But I hope if another chaos war happens then we can pick teams like draft, not just thrown together... Too many inactive or not really ready for prime time players thrown into what could have been decent clans and fights. For this to work would need longer lead time, so say sign ups for those wanting to do it starts soon, then after cut off time divisions set, players in those divisions vote for leaders, then leaders select their members...So say get 8 hr window, then next leader picks, if you miss selection then a selection is auto made, then so on till all members in division set. The selection process would take several days is why i said start process before the next war so could be the 2nd war of the month type situation.

Sten Hugo Hiller. Sounds like it could work, -if it get implemented. Of the details many complain about are the prizes from the war, and the raids (Number of Mechs to beat, Hardness of walls and Payooffs) As you have participated in most wars so far, what is your impression? Have the prizes become better or worse over the years?

Robert C Goetz. Many things about raids seem crazy. The # of mechas should be adjusted, there should be enough for all members to get a full share plus extra for over runs, and the %'s should also increase, and honestly none above D10 needs those crystal prizes... As far as the toughness...yes some seem stupid tough others can just blow through waves only slowing to refill energy...I know some of the lower division clans complain they hit waves that take them nearly 1 day to kill them..hours and hours of 0's and 1's looks like binary code or something...I mean no one minds a challenge, but also many can't sit in front of a pc screen 24/7 trying to get a share hitting their heads against the walls. Many changes over the yrs have improved, so for those changes I appreciate it. But still needs tweaking.

“The medical journals where we felt we had to get the dialogue going were a bit more skeptical of the research,” she said. “I was close to giving up on the medical establishment when we were trying to publish.” Grants and study manuscripts would get opposite reviews from different reviewers: “Someone loves it, someone hates it.”

The study itself included 512 mothers and their children from six cities in Canada. The researchers measured how much fluoride the mothers consumed by testing their urine for traces of it each trimester.
