Tumblr media
The Recording Academy®’s Special Merit Awards Ceremony celebrating the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award, Trustees Award, Technical GRAMMY® Award, and Best Song For Social Change Award recipients will return during GRAMMY® Week on Feb. 3, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. The Clark Sisters, Laurie Anderson, Gladys Knight, N.W.A, Donna Summer, and Tammy Wynette are the 2024 Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award honorees; Peter Asher, DJ Kool Herc and Joel Katz are the Trustees Award recipients; Tom Kobayashi and Tom Scott are the Technical GRAMMY Award honorees; and “Refugee,” written by K’naan, Steve McEwan, and Gerald Eaton (a.k.a. Jarvis Church), is being honored with the Best Song For Social Change Award.
“The Academy is honored to pay tribute to this year’s Special Merit Award recipients — a remarkable group of creators and industry professionals whose impact resonates with generations worldwide,” said Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. “Their contributions to music span genres, backgrounds and crafts, reflecting the rich diversity that fuels our creative community. We look forward to honoring these music industry trailblazers next month as part of our week-long celebration leading up to Music’s Biggest Night®.”
Lifetime Achievement Award Honorees: This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers* who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. The Clark Sisters – an American gospel vocal group initially consisting of five sisters – Jacky, Denise, Elbernita, Dorinda, and Karen – have been taking the world by storm since the early 1980s. Credited for helping to bring gospel music to the mainstream, the Clark Sisters are considered pioneers of contemporary gospel. Their biggest crossover hits include: “Is My Living in Vain?,” “Hallelujah,” “He Gave Me Nothing to Lose,” “Endow Me,” their hit song “Jesus Is A Love Song,” “Pure Gold,” “Miracle,” and their largest, mainstream crossover gold-certified, “You Brought The Sunshine.” The Clark Sisters (Jacky, Elbernita, Dorinda, and Karen) have won three GRAMMYs (two awarded to the group, and one to Karen as a songwriter for “Blessed and Highly Favored”), and with 16 albums to their credit and millions in sales, they are the highest-selling female gospel group in history.
Tumblr media
Laurie Anderson is a writer, director, composer, visual artist, musician, and vocalist who has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, experimental music, and technology. As a performer and musician, she has collaborated with many people including Brian Eno, Jean-Michel Jarre, William S. Burroughs, Peter Gabriel, Robert Wilson, Christian McBride, and Philip Glass. In 2002, Anderson was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA which culminated in her 2004 touring solo performance, The End of the Moon. She has been nominated for six GRAMMY Awards® throughout her recording career and received a GRAMMY® for the release Landfall in collaboration with the Kronos Quartet at the 61st GRAMMYs®.
Tumblr media
Gladys Knight is a seven-time GRAMMY® Award winner who has enjoyed No. 1 hits in pop, gospel, R&B, and adult contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years including four solo albums. She appeared on ABC’s 14th season of “Dancing With The Stars” in 2012, and in 2019, she competed on the inaugural season of “The Masked Singer.” Knight has sung the National Anthem at several major sporting events, including at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta in 2019, and at the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. She was a National Endowment for the Arts 2021 National Medal of Arts Recipient and received a Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Artistic Achievements in 2022.
N.W.A was a rap group from the Compton district in Los Angeles who are credited by many with inventing gangsta rap. The group, consisting of Eazy-E^, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella, and MC-Ren, developed a new sound, which brought in many of the loud, extreme sonic innovations of Public Enemy while adopting a self-consciously violent and dangerous lyrical stance. In 1988, N.W.A released their album, Straight Outta Compton, a brutally intense record that became an underground hit without any support from radio or MTV. This negative attention worked in their favor as it brought the album to multiplatinum status. Although the group was short-lived, gangsta rap established itself as the most popular form of hip-hop during the mid-1990s.
Donna Summer^ rocketed to international superstardom with her groundbreaking merger of R&B, soul, pop, funk, rock, disco, and avant-garde electronica, catapulting underground dance music out of the clubs of Europe and bringing it to the world. Summer holds the record with three consecutive double albums to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts (the only solo artist to ever accomplish this), and first female artist to have four No. 1 singles in a 12-month period on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. A five-time GRAMMY winner and 18-time GRAMMY nominee, Summer was the first artist to win the GRAMMY for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female (1979, “Hot Stuff”) as well as the first-ever recipient of the new GRAMMY Category for Best Dance Recording (1997, “Carry On”). Summer was the first female artist to win GRAMMY Awards in four different genres: dance, gospel, rock, and R&B.
Tammy Wynette^ first hit the musical scene in 1966 with “Apartment #9” after moving to Nashville and teaming up with record producer Billy Sherrill. Together, the duo wrote songs that reflected the yearnings and the things Wynette felt were important in her life. In 1968, Wynette released “Stand By Your Man,” which sold more than five million singles and became the largest-selling single ever recorded by a female artist. By 1970, she racked up five No. 1 country hits, was named the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year three times, and won two GRAMMYs. Wynette was the first female country music singer to sell over one million albums and has sold more than 30 million records grossing more than $100 million, earning her the title “The First Lady of Country Music.”
Trustees Award Honorees: This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to individuals who, during their careers in music, have made significant contributions, other than performance*, to the field of recording. See past recipients here (*through 1983, recipients included performers).

Peter Asher’s career began in 1964 as one-half of Peter & Gordon, whose “A World Without Love” topped the charts worldwide. Nine more Top 20 hits followed before Asher became head of A&R for the Beatles’ Apple Records in 1968, and discovered, produced and managed James Taylor; later adding Linda Ronstadt, Neil Diamond, 10,000 Maniacs, Cher, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams, Stevie Nicks, Lyle Lovett, Morrissey, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Ed Sheeran, and more to his roster. Asher won the GRAMMY for Producer Of The Year in both 1977 and 1989. He hosts a hit radio show “From Me To You” on Sirius XM and is much in demand not only in the studio but as a performer, speaker and author.
Tumblr media
The legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee DJ Kool Herc is consistently credited as the founder of hip-hop. His mastery at the turntables is known worldwide, as are his positive contributions to the evolution of hip-hop culture. Herc’s popularity rose by playing long sets of assorted rhythm breaks strung together. Unlike any of his DJ counterparts, Herc is not a rapid rapper who keeps your head spinning with a patter, but he is a musical innovator to the turntables. He first introduced using two turntables to make the beats last longer, creating the illusion of one long break for the B-Boys to show off their skills. Herc has received a great deal of recognition during his lifetime, including his induction into the 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and recognition from the New York Landmarks Conservancy as a 2023 Living Landmark.
Joel Katz has played a profound role in shaping the entertainment industry through his work in facilitating entertainment-related corporate acquisitions and mergers and consulting multi-national and multi-media entertainment companies. Katz was ranked Billboard magazine’s No. 1 entertainment attorney in its “Power 100” list of most powerful executives in the music business and has been called “the dealmaker who thinks outside the box.” At Kennesaw State University, Katz endowed and began a commercial music program – one of the largest music education programs in America with over 500 students. He has authored and co-authored many articles and commentary on topics concerning entertainment law. In honor of his work, the University of Tennessee College of Law dedicated its library in his name, the Joel A. Katz Law Library.
Technical GRAMMY Award Honorees: This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Producers & Engineers Wing® Advisory Council and Chapter Committees and ratification by the Recording Academy's National Trustees to individuals and/or companies/organizations/institutions who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field. See past recipients here.
Tom Kobayashi^ and Tom Scott met at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Sound in 1985, when the duo joined the company and completed the building of the Skywalker post-production facilities in both Northern and Southern California. Together, Kobayashi and Scott launched the Entertainment Digital Network, also known as “EDnet,” which employed fiber-optic networks to send high-quality video and audio great distances. Its then-revolutionary technology enabled the industry to link together talent, executives and production facilities at great cost savings. For 25 years, that company connected hundreds of recording studios worldwide in the days before the Internet could handle high-quality audio. EDnet became a part of Onstream Media, and over the decades, tens of thousands of long-distance collaboration sessions were facilitated for the music, advertising, TV, and cinema businesses.
Best Song For Social Change Award Honorees: This Special Merit Award honors songwriter(s) of message-driven music that speaks to the social issues of our time and has demonstrated and inspired positive global impact. The recipient(s) are selected annually by a Blue-Ribbon Committee composed of a community of peers dedicated to artistic expression, the craft of songwriting and the power of songs to effect social change. See past recipients here.

In June 2023, singer-songwriter K’naan released the inspiring single and accompanying video “Refugee,” co-written by GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter Steve McEwan and GRAMMY-nominated producer Gerald Eaton (also known by his stage name, Jarvis Church). “Refugee” stands out as a distinctive musical endeavor, skillfully interweaving personal and political narratives, and serving as a tribute to refugees around the world. With the single, K’naan drew inspiration from his personal experiences, aiming to redefine the traditional perception of the term “refugee” into a symbol of resilience and strength. The song was written with the hopes of encouraging individuals to embrace the word “refugee” proudly and to give those made homeless by conflict a song that felt like home.

"...BUT I THINK WE HAVE PROG TODAY. YOU COULD SAY MAYBE APHEX TWIN IS PROG. NEO PROG."
PIC INFO: Resolution at 945x2000 -- Spotlight on a BJÖRK '95 Tour concert poster w/ Yasuhiro "COBA" Kobayashi & (DJ) APHEX TWIN supporting, performing live at the Detroit State Theatre in Detroit, MI, on August 5, 1995. Artwork by Mark Arminski.
BJÖRK : "I mean, I think there’s prog of every decade — the prog of the ’70s is probably most famous. But I think we have prog today. You could say maybe Aphex Twin is prog . . . neo-prog. [laughs]
AUGUSTYNIAK : Okay. Then it makes sense to me because I feel, “Oh, it’s cool again.”
BJÖRK : "Yeah. I mean, APHEX TWIN would probably beat me in the head for saying that, but there you go."

One thing I keep asking myself now in relation to Ahsoka is: does Filoni like samurai films? Does he have thoughts about any of them? And if he does, why isn't any of it in the show?
Like, regardless of anyone's views on The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson engaged with the genre. Rather than just pull from things that had already been used by Star Wars, he explored. He understood the themes of Rashomon and Three Outlaw Samurai, and understood why those films work. You can tell that he has a relationship to and appreciation for the material. He borrows Rashomon's "three versions of the story" and echoing that film, the truth lands in a murky in-between exposes a critical error by a character, but also incites them to an act of real moral courage. The energy of Three Outlaw Samurai, meanwhile, comes through in the slovenly DJ and the frantic, scrappy melee combat.
In the same way, Andor and Rogue One are applying more than just the aesthetics of espionage thrillers and modern war movies to SW (also they understood what those aesthetics are for). For that matter, TCW's Umbara arc used Vietnam War film nods pretty well.
The Mandalorian, I think, has increasingly lost the sense of having anything to say with its Western elements, and in Ahsoka it's even more frustrating. Characters pose with their lightsabers in ways that mimick the likes of Toshiro Mifune, there are musical echoes, the framing vaguely evokes those films at times... yet it stops there, at the surface. They're not doing anything more than The Jedi borrowing frames from Yojimbo back in Mando S2. It begins to feel performative, doing homage to the things which influenced Lucas because they influenced Lucas (and missing the fact that Lucas adored these films because they are terrific works of art).
And that doesn't even get into how much of Kurosawa's actual style isn't imitated at all here. Kineticism, the thing which the master did better than basically anyone else, is pretty much absent, let alone his dramatic use of weather and smoke.
The reason I'm harping on about this is that Filoni and his writers room could really have made hay if they dug into these stories, because they would've found themes that informed the story they were ostensibly setting out to tell. Plenty of Kurosawa films are about ronin (sometimes left masterless by a war that destroyed their clans) and their ambiguous, often fraught relationships with the rest of the world.
Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Sanjuro all get into this stuff. The former also asks searching questions about what place there is for a warrior in a land at peace, which Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri explores through a much darker and more cynical lens. All of that feels extremely applicable to an Ahsoka who is meant to be scarred by her experiences and feels a gap in her life, where so much of the Jedi's traditional role as peacekeepers and protectors was meant to go. (There is a similar struggle at the heart of David Kirk's wonderful Musashi Miyamoto novels).
But instead we end up with this very shallow attempt at doing homage, which comes out as rather disrespectful in itself when you break it down.

SO I have 3 main unit groups called NEO*fantasy, exile-d (my main one rn) and Day*Dream!! I posted basic intros to all the characters and there units which i think you can find because i tag them all with #pjsk oc but if you don't want to read all of my yaping i totally understand so here are some summaries. (i apologize in advance for clogging up your feed)
NEO*FANTASY is an EDM and DJ based unit. It is made up of Kyo Yamauchi the leader and lead singer, Akemi Fukuhara the VJ and artist, Mimi Sasaki the choreographer, and Haruto Kobayashi the DJ.
Instead of them being in high school they are all in the last year of middle school 14-ish years old
exile-d is a unit made by Sora, an idol/music producer who needs a band to stay relevant and his manager Hiro or HERO. Their music is a gothic metal/j rock mix with a bit of visual kei inspiration as well.
The group is made up of Sora Yugeta the producer and bassist, Kenta Kato the guitarist and vocalist, Tsumugi Yamada the keyboardist, Yon Kimura the drummer. Kenta is the unit leader but Sora is the actual leader of the band.
Day*Dream is a live performance based unit made up of Mika Hanata the vocalist/lyricist, Reina Fukuhara the instrumentalist, Tomori Nakamura the choreographer, and Seria Yoshida the composer. Their music is made to free themselves from the rules that society and themselves have put on them. hello it is i i come to clog ur inbox again hope its no issue... THANK U FOR TELLIN ME ABOUT HANIWA IT WASN'T LENGHTY AT ALL it actually left me wanting to know more !!! could u tell me about the idol series......
HIII WELCOME BACK !! im always happy to talk abt haniwa i vibrate ever time i talk abt it yahay!! LETS GET DOWN TO IT THEN !!
the idol series is a branch of honeyworks' confession executive committee, which as opposed to the large majority of their songs that centered on familiar shoujo manga struggles such as love, crushes, terminal illness, talking flowers, and of course, what happens when your crush moves to USA bc he was too stupid to confess — ANYWAY. idol series deals with the struggles and sufferings of idols in the entertainment industry, as well as the relationships they form in and out of their jobs !
idol series primarily centers on lipxlip ! which if you have ever seen me or spoke to me you must be fully aware im not very normal about them and just Talking abt them is one whole post itself so lets just jump over that. pyon~~!
lipxlip are the introductory characters into idol series, with one of its members, aizo, having a branch in the love series through his brother, ken. this shows that both serie are inherently connected and are simply separated by heteronormativity super silly things!
Tumblr media
idol series also includes hiyori, lipxlip's manager and classmate who has since earned her own spot as a main character in love series with her own love story with shiranami nagisa — as well as other idols !!
Tumblr media
mona is an angel-themed idol who is also the sister of sena narumi, a love series character and partner of midori takamine AND an in-universe media personality !
Tumblr media
minami started as a collaboration character with y!mobile where he was introduced as the love interest of nakuru in bae love, and they have since canonized their relationship in ren'ai thru kareshi no shikaku !
Tumblr media
another pair of idols are asuka kaido and kanata ichigoya, otherwise known as ASCANA! theyre part of the virtual johnny's project and asuka was a temporary potential love interest for hiyori up until his rejection of her in heroine ikusei keikaku (heroine development plan) . unfortunately, ascana has probably been discontinued bc their seiyuus are part of a much bigger musical group !
Tumblr media
last and very expansive idol group (ish) in idol series is full throttle4 ! sometimes abbreviated as ft4, their members go by stage names in english characters. unlike the others, theyre not actually idols ! theyre a music and dance group with their manager as their DJ and leader, IV! rio and yui serve as the vocals while megu and dai are dancers!
note abt ft4 is that their songs tend to deal with heavy subject matter and their theme in itself is much darker than mona's angels or lipxlip's princes, but they have some incredibly interesting stories ^_^
Tumblr media
idol series has various other characters from different media and stories: an example is chizuru nakamura or chuutan, the infamous main character of kawaikute gomen and a diehard lipxlip fan ! there's also asuna, mona's rival idol who has done some... cruel things to mona in the watashi idol sengen manga. additionally, various characters voiced by amatsuki often play the role of mona fans, like kobayashi from getsuyoubi no yuutsu! there are more and more but at this point this ask is. Too long already. IM SORRY
i hope this helps!! its 2 am and i needed this out of my system so im answering a bit fast i hope u dont mind 😭

Please tell me about your Danganronpa OC!
OK SO
THE OC IN QUESTION, MADE WITH PICREW
Tumblr media
Their [real] name is Daisuke Kobayashi [referred to by their last name, Dai if you're close to them]
theyre a double ultimate, they hide their second ultimate talent from everybody they meet, its sort of like their hidden identity. Their main that everybody knows is ultimate psychologist/therapist, and their secret one is ultimate Party Thrower/DJ
Their fake name [yknow for the secret talent] is Haru Miura
They grew up with their brother and their dad, they never really had much but they made it work. They found out that they were amazing with dealing with others emotions at around the age of 15 [three years before the killing game], and then picked up on remixing music and started throwing secret parties at an old abandoned house. Then when they were 17, they moved out of their childhood home to a big city where she worked at a therapy center at day and threw an occasional party once in a while. But HOO BOY did those parties get crazy, talking about the whole state talking about them for months. But after a while, people got bored with the parties, Kobayashi fell into a spiral of self doubt and anxiety and pressure to keep up their reputation and started throwing them almost every night, even when they felt physically and mentally out of it, and they still had to do their job as a therapist. and it eventually turned into bottled up emotions and pent up anger towards the world
they killed togami after trail two, they finally snapped. They lured him into the cafeteria and taped him to the wall, and full Villain style, went on a monolouge about their emotions and how they hated this world and everybody in it. Then stabbed him exactly 7 times and put his body in their bathroom shower.
Togami wasn't found until 12 days after he was killed. In the meantime Kobayashi formed a friendship with Kirigiri, and they spent a lot of time together.
When he was found, it was because they moved his body to outside the locker room so they wouldn't look like a suspect but hoo boy that was a mistake. He got found almost instantly.
What gave them away during the trial was them hyperventilating and sweating the whole time, and blood following from their room to the locker room along with other clues [aka I can't think of anything else lol]
Their execution is them starting out in a therapists office, having to talk to this robot monokuma copy, and as it goes on, the monokuma starts whispering stuff about how everybody hates them and how they should've been born, and then the floor drops and now they're on a stage, with a ton of monokumas as the crowd, theyre locked onto the floor by their feet, and instructed to "throw the CRazIest ParTY EVR" [<- what the sign looks like] and music starts blaring. They start anxiously DJ-ing and this bar by the sign goes up slowly, and at the top of the bar it says "DJ 2 FREEDOOM!!", implying that if they keep it up for long enough they get freed. They get up to almost the top, and then the crowd starts booing loudly, for no explainable reason. And they start throwing various items, spears, knifes, rocks, stuff like that. They keep going in hopes that the meter will still hit the top, but a monokuma stabs the meter with one of the knifes and the liquid from it starts pouring out into the crowd. They just completely give up at that point and then, the final blow. A few spears come from behind them and impale them straight through the heart and head.
OK SO THATS IT SO FAR, THEYRE STILL PRETTY NEW SOOO.

Killer 7
Produced by BDGTA Writing: Ken Castaneda Mix and Master Engineer: Tomas Skelly Additional production on 'Killer 7': Jude Lead illustration: Jills Nipples Cover design: Ken Castaneda
https://on.soundcloud.com/TGUrMRSHD7DLwKmS8
Through personal anecdotes and contemporary sounds, "Killer 7" exists as seven songs that narrate the ebb and flow of a refracted relationship with striking emotional depth. The title of the EP "Killer 7" draws inspiration from Goichi Suda and Hiroyuki Kobayashi’s cult 2005 video game "Killer7," which follows a group of assassins known as the "killer7"—seven personas split from one central character. This concept of fragmented identity is mirrored in the EP's narrative structure.
With sharp lyrics and soft vocals, BDGTA blends genres like jersey club, reggaeton, and synthpop, creating rich and multifaceted soundscapes. Each song is symbolized by a unique icon, reminiscent of video game collectibles or "power-ups," that pieces together the story's fragments. The symbols were designed and illustrated by Brooklyn based visual artist and tattoo artist Jills Nipples.
Each track unveils intimate details of a relationship, from the excitement of locking eyes with the DJ at the club as heard through tangy synths and sharp metallic kicks on 'Laser in My Eye' to the longing expressed in a letter mailed across the ocean using ambient field recordings and noise in 'Sprawl 2 U', and the bittersweet taste of a one-way ticket home found in the speedy drum and bass on the EP’s closing track 'KYWH'. The title track 'Killer 7' is the heart of the project, cementing the foundation of the flawed relationship. Through fast breakbeats and thumping, relentless kicks, the song sheds light on the complexities of love and how ever changing this can be day to day.

Man... I could go rambling for hours about the albums ive been listening lately. Ive been getting arround to albums ive wanted to listen for a long time
I realized I can get at least one album on my way back home. It usually takes arround 20-30 minutes which is enough for me to get into something and then continue it later at home.
It has worked wonders on working through my musical backlog.
Anyway on another topic because im kinda scatershot atm, heres some recommendations from me!!
Mostly things ive been listening lately
Cobra And Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night (Stereolab)
Moonglow (Tatsuro Yamashita)
All Right! (Himiko Kikuchi)
RADIO DC (w/ DJ Katsuya Kobayashi)
Remain in the Light (Talking Heads)
SMAP 014
Sparkling Music (Deavid Soul)
KEISATSU (Policeman)
Camera Talk (The Flippers Guitar)
Bustin Loose EP (Captain Funk/Tatsuya Oe)
SHIN GENMA TAISEN (SENSE OF WONDER)
BIG WAVE (Tatsuro Yamashita)
(actually I should make a post going over hiroyuki namba in general, I like his stuff and its cool how he has history arranging music for video games right next to his work as an artist... idk I find it neat)

John, my younger Brother, is right NOW wrestling with a choice between staying put in Paradise, or coming back to Family and Friends (us).

As an actual 🚖 Cabbie for years, Arthur's 🦇 Batmobile often plays LIVE-radio music sessions handpicked by "DJ" ✝️🎶 Jesus Christ. Here's an example from the year 2020.
On ✝️🎶 2/12/24, John sent me a communication update WHICH, to an untrained ear, might be mistook for simply background music. It played in a grocery store, and I 👂🏽 immediately KNEW: John was letting me know how AMAZING the sights and sounds are in Heaven, which makes his (yet) UNDECIDED choice whether to stay or go that much MORE difficult.

Friends and Family on Earth are doing everything to help facilitate JP choosing what's in his best interests.
"The Kobayashi Maru has set sail for the Promised Land."
Prayerfully we reach out to John, OUR 🖖🏽 Ambassador Spock. We've sent a message to the "Genesis planet" where he's at, (Heaven).
The "Search for Spock" may YET include a rescue from the brink, and it would be a miracle that transcends the BEST efforts that medical science 📴-ers, in 2024.
