Sprint will be no more on August 2, as it officially turns into T-Mobile

It’s been a minute since we’ve discussed the Sprint and T-Mobile merge, mainly because it’s been a minute since anything major has really changed. Well, yesterday T-Mobile confirmed that as of August 2, Sprint and T-Mobile will be unifying their brands under “The New T-Mobile” name. This deal has been happening for the past few years and it was expected to launch this summer as they laid off hundreds of Sprint employees and disbanded their 5G network. Most of the Sprint retail stores will be rebranded as T-Mobile stores with more announcements happening next week. So yeah T-Mobile.. I’m trying to understand how building a stronger synergy means laying off people, but oh well.

ASUS ROG Phone 3 press render leaked ahead of launch

We’re pretty much 5 days away from the official announcement of the ROG Phone 3 so, the leaks keep flowing. Now, we got some official-looking press renders of the phone from Evan Blass, showing off the entire design which is kinda familiar. At the back we can see the new triple camera setup with the RGB ROG logo. At the front we have a notch-less design with thick top and bottom bezels to house the dual front face firing speakers. We’re expecting this phone to bring a 6.59in AMOLED display running at 120Hz, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+, and a crazy 6000 mAh battery with 30W fast charging. We’ll be back with more information once it launches.

New iPad Air could end up giving us more power, for less

You remember that 10.8-inch iPad we should be getting this year which we talked about yesterday? Well, now we have some more information and it looks like this will be the new iPad Air. According to the report, Apple is going for the iPhone SE strategy by bringing a powerful SoC to an affordable device. It might also adopt some of the Pro features like USB-C and the new Magic Keyboard. This iPad would be priced somewhere around the current Air’s price which starts at $500 and the regular iPad which starts at $330. If you’re looking for an iPad Mini, like me, we should be getting those next year according to Ming Chi Kuo, and he also mentioned that these iPads will ship with 20W chargers. Speaking of iPads, let’s talk about the Apple Pencil for a second. A new patent titled “Computer System with color Sampling stylus” would use several photo detectors in the Apple pencil to allow you to hold the pencil against an object and sample the color for whatever it is you’re using it. We’re not exactly sure if this is possible at the moment but it would be a nice feature, let’s hope Apple makes it work.

Speaking of events and products we’re close to, we have a new leaked 6 second teaser of the Galaxy Buds posted to Twitter. On the video we see one of the buds lift up from the case and then the words, “Keep the Noise Out. Let the Sound In.” appear on the screen hinting to the Active Noise cancellation. We also have another picture showing off the inner side of the buds as well as someone wearing them and we can’t say they look too comfortable. We also have a new CAD render video of the Galaxy Note 20 showing the phone from all angles. We can tell this is the regular Note 20 as, it brings a flat display and triple cameras at the back with no periscope lens. There’s really no surprises here any more so, let’s just get ready for Unpacked.

New OnePlus Buds could feature noise cancelation during calls

And finally the hottest news today have to do with OnePlus. Let’s talk about the OnePlus Nord as today we have some official information. The first one is a OnePlus Buds teaser where they show off how the Buds will bring in-call noise cancellation. The teaser reads “Even if you’re in a noisy environment, your voice will be picked up clearly. No need to shhh”. At the end of the teaser we can see the silhouette of the buds and the color looks pretty similar to the ones Carl Pei was wearing on the WVFRM podcast. Moving on to the actual Nord, the company just revealed the camera specs through their Forums. Let’s start off with the selfie camera, which will get a 32MP main sensor and wide-angle selfie camera with the 105-degree FOV which is allegedly an 8MP sensor. Now, on the back, the main camera will be a Sony IMX586 48MP sensor with OIS, along with an 8MP ultra-wide angle camera, a 5MP depth sensor and my last but not least, my personal favorite, a macro camera. The building inspection and surveying industry are starting to appreciate the benefits of small unmanned drones as a tool for surveying buildings, especially for roofs and other inaccessible locations.

Drones are changing the game when it comes to roof inspections, making them safer and more efficient for construction companies around the world.

Thermal cameras and Optical-Zoom Capable Cameras are powerful tools for conducting roof inspections. Thermal Cameras can point out the wet areas on a roof, where heat is retained longer than dry areas. After the sun goes down and a roof begins to cool, thermal imagery also detects these temperature differences and helps inspectors pinpoint areas of concern that warrant a closer look. Thats where the Optical-Zoom Capable Cameras come into play.

By allowing inspectors to perform remote inspections with real-time information, drone mapping reduces the amount of time workers spend in dangerous areas. If an inspector can reduce the time spent on a roof by 3–4 hours, that’s 3–4 hours he is on the ground and out of harm’s way.

As thermal sensors become smaller, lighter and less expensive, applications for thermal imaging and inspection continue to take off. Whether you’re inspecting HVAC units, wind turbines, roofs, cell towers or solar farms – even finding missing people, thermal imaging and inspection can provide invaluable information in so many applications. Thermal Imaging Inspection

We use drone-mounted full radiometric thermal cameras to inspect sites and assets for leakages, concealed defects and problematic temperature variations. The use of drones is particularly well-suited to high, difficult to reach assets.

This solution overcomes the challenges of surveying large and inaccessible areas, offering a technique which is quicker, safer and creates significant cost efficiencies.

Identify problems before failure occurs

The speed, ease and cost of drone-based thermal inspection means this workscope can be carried out more frequently than traditional methods. In turn, this means identified areas can be monitored more often until maintenance or replacement can take place, ensuring failure does not occur.

Reduce costs

Avoid the expense of using helicopters or the time inefficiency caused by conducting inspections manually.

Detailed, accurate data

Manual thermal inspections are often slow to undertake and can provide inaccurate data, particularly from high or difficult to access areas. Avoid guesswork and incorrect decision making with detailed, actionable data.

DJI presenta Osmo Pocket e rivoluziona il mercato dei gimbal ed actioncam

Nella serata di ieri DJI ha presentato un nuovo prodotto e questo ha fatto rapidamente il giro del mondo per via delle sue caratteristiche che definire interessanti potrebbe essere alquanto riduttivo. Il nuovo DJI Osmo Pocket è un Gimbal 3 assi con telecamera incorporata, o il contrario, se preferite.

Questo piccolo "apparecchietto" racchiude nei suoi 122 x 29 x 36 mm e 116 grammi di peso una videocamera in grado di riprendere in 4K a 60 fotogrammi al secondo, un piccolo display, molte funzionalità automatiche e ovviamente il gimbal 3 assi. Cosa c'è di strano direte voi, d'altronde DJI aveva già fatto un dispositivo simile (il DJI Osmo). Le novità in realtà sono molteplici. Innanzitutto questo è un dispositivo stand alone che funziona anche senza smartphone, è più piccolo, più leggero, integra un display touchscreen e svariate modalità di ripresa e foto automatiche, quindi come una comune action camera potremo portarlo sempre con noi e utilizzarlo anche quando la batteria del nostro smartphone è scarica.

Il sensore è un CMOS da 1/2,3" da 12 MP a cui è abbinata un ottica f/2.0 con un angolo di ripresa di 80°. L'otturatore elettronico va da un minimo di 1/8000s fino a 8 secondi, l'ISO massimo è 3200 e il bitrate per i video arriva a 100Mbps. Il DJI Osmo Pocket ha una batteria da 875mAh capace di renderlo operativo per oltre 2 ore di registrazione (140 minuti) e si ricarica in poco più di un'ora (73 minuti). Il gimbal non possiede libertà totale di movimento, ma si può configurare per fare riprese in modalità normale, selfie e FVP anche in orizzontale.

Veniamo ora alle funzionalità automatiche. L'Osmo Pocket è in grado di tracciare automaticamente un oggetto o un soggetto e di seguire i movimenti semplicemente facendo doppio tap sul display su ciò che vogliamo tracciare. É prevista una modalità di video selfie, che sicuramente farà felici molti utenti, che includerà sempre noi nella ripresa, anche quando ci muoviamo. La modalità Motionlapse crea dei timelapse automatici in cui la camera non è statica ma si muove per creare maggiore drammaticità alla riprese. Sono anche presenti delle modalità automatiche relative alle foto, come ad esempio il panorama tradizionale (180° di angolo di ripresa) oppure la foto espansa 3x3 che unisce 9 scatti realizzati in una griglia 3x3, oppure ancora la modalità nightshot che automaticamente aumenta il tempo di esposizione della foto in una scena buia e compensa i movimenti della mano con il gimbal.

Ovviamente, come ogni dispositivo smart che si rispetti, anche l'Osmo Pocket si può collegare allo smartphone e DJI ha pensato ad una nuova App chiamata Mimo: My Moment, che permette di creare montaggi video, applicare effetti e condividere sui social le riprese appena effettuate. Tutte queste funzionalità hanno un prezzo, e per una volta il prezzo è davvero basso. Quanto costa una GoPro Hero 7 che ha la stessa capacità video? Oggi 408€. Il DJI Osmo Pocket invece costa solo 359€ ed è sicuramente molto più versatile di una action camera tradizionale. Si può già ordinare da Amazon, anche se la consegna non è garantita per Natale. Voglio concludere questo mio post con una piccola postilla e riguarda gli accessori. Come ogni dispositivo anche l'Osmo Poket prevede una serie di accessori, alcuni ancora non sono disponibili (come la bellissima custodia di ricarica) mentre altri si possono già acquistare. Perché parlo di questo? Perché ad esempio l'Osmo Pocket non ha pulsanti o rotelle per muovere manualmente la camera e questi vanno comprati a parte, non ha la connettività wireless, o banalmente un modo per collegarlo a ventose, pettorine e altri supporti in stile GoPro. Quindi è vero che costa poco, ma per renderlo più funzionale bisogna acquistare, secondo me, l'Expansion Kit da 109€ che porta il totale a 468€, un po' sopra il prezzo di una GoPro Hero 7, ma con tantissime funzionalità in più.
