Some Thoughts on the Men’s  Free Skate, Pyeongchang 2018

Last night was one of the wildest competitions that figure skating has ever seen. After some intense competition, we saw Yuzuru Hanyu take his second consecutive Olympic gold, a feat not seen in the men’s event since Dick Button in 1948 and 1952. I personally have a couple of takeaways from this event that I think everyone should consider.

  Yes, Nathan “Quad King” Chen won the free skate with a historic performance. 6 successful quads is an absolute first and nothing to sneeze at. However, you need to pay attention to the Technical Elements Score (TES) and the Program Components Score (PCS). There is a huge spread of 40 points between his TES (jumps, spins, footwork, GOE) and his PCS (transitions, choreography, skating skills, etc.), meaning that the jumps and stuff are great, but his overall presentation of his skating is still lacking. Overall, he was sixth in PCS. 

Transitions were a particularly weak area for Chen, only being 9th in that category of PCS. Skaters who finished outside the top 10, Dmitri Aliev and Misha Ge, were able to beat Chen in this particular mark. This comes at no surprise to me. Aliev is a breathtaking skater, and when he gets everything together, he could become a huge medal factor in the years to come. As for Nathan, this is not a surprise as well. To do all those quads, he had to sacrifice a lot of transitional content, making the program seem empty overall. Athleticism comes with its boundaries, and the first-ranked free skate was a prime example of that.

What won the medals last night was a balance of sport and art. The three medalists really showcased their skating in the best light. Yuzuru is just packaged so well. Elegant and powerful, even when he made mistakes his presentation made it seem like the errors were not as big. Shoma put a lot on the line with the big quads, and while some were not successful, he bounced back to win the silver medal. He was able to overtake 2nd from Javi because of the technical content. Javi skated conservatively, but his showmanship carried him to a bronze medal over Jin Boyang. He tied Hanyu for the highest marks in two PCS categories (performance and interpretation of the music), and actually beat Yuzu in the choreography PCS. His popped 2nd quad salchow actually got a positive GOE. Javi knows how to compete like a veteran, and I’m so happy that he will get to end his Olympic career with a medal (he has announced this will most likely be his last Olympics).

We can’t forget about the stars of the future. Like I mentioned before, I think we should all be looking at Dmitri Aliev. I appreciate the clean lines and balanced content he presents on the ice. I know some U.S. media outlets are looking at Vincent Zhou as a future Olympic star. He placed 6th in the free, pulling up to 6th overall. However, we must once again observe his PCS. He placed an extremely low 19th in PCS. In essence, the judges are trying to tell him he still skates like a junior, except with quad lutzes. He needs to consider upping the transitional/choreographic/skating skill game in order to really compete with the big guns of figure skating, but it’s all there for him.

Overall, I am pleased that the level of skating has been so high for the Olympics this year. We still have World Championships after this, so there’s more competition to come, but it’ll be exciting to witness where the sport goes from this point forward.

Vince's back knocks into the wall behind him, his chin ducked, all his movie-star shine and sparkle bled from him in an instant as his breath catches in his throat.

"Leading man Vincent Shield... that sure wasn't your girlfriend, was it, Vince? Last I checked, you're dating... a blonde named Sandra, and boy, that did not look like a blonde named Sandra. You seem to be failing at that heterosexuality you're so insistent about these days, if my eyes don't deceive me."

"Owen-"

"Shut the fuck up." Owen's voice shifts into viciousness instantly and he pulls back a hand to smack his palm back into it right next to Vince's head, watching him flinch. "I fucking offered you everything, I told you I loved you, and you told me you weren't going to risk your career-"

"That wasn't why I said no," Vince says, voice low, trembling. He opens his eyes and turns to look at Owen, knowing he looks pleading and scared, just what Owen wants to see. But he can't help it. "I'm sorry that I tried-... tried to come up with an excuse, but that wasn't it, Owen. I-I just... I didn't want you like that. You were-... were seventeen, and my best friend, and-"

"I said shut the fuck up!" He nearly shouts it, grabbing at Vince's chin and shaking him by it until it feels like his brains are rattling inside his skull. He lets go and Vince stands there, disoriented and dizzy, blinking.

He stays still too long.

Owen's body presses up against his and Vince's stomach revolts, nausea fighting for supremacy over his fear. He gags and has to swallow back bile.

"He's better than me, is that it?" Owen's hand moves over Vince's ribs, plays along the line of his body right through his t-shirt, moves around his back to his lower spine, presses their hips together.

Vince gags again, closing his eyes tightly. The sound of his breathing is starting to sound like a sob.

"He's better in bed? Is that why you decided to risk your career for him, huh?"

"He-..." Vince swallows, swallows again. Just barely manages to crack his eyes open. "He actually gives a fuck if I say y-yes, so, you know-"

Owen slaps him. The crack of palm against skin is loud, too loud, and Vince's head snaps to the side as heat and pain bloom over his cheek.

"I gave a fuck if you said yes," Owen hisses. "But then you didn't. That was your decision, Vince, to fight someone who loves you. You did that, that was all you. Now, we both have to be at this party, but I don't have to see all your goddamn PDA. Go back out there, and I don't want to see you do any more than holding hands, you got it?"

"It's been ten years, Owen," Vince says heavily. His face is throbbing. "You don't get to dictate how I act around-"

"Tonight, I do. Or I'll find you again. I know where you are all the time, Vince. I can be anywhere you are the second you're alone. So don't make me want to. No PDA at the party with the boyfriend, hm?" Owen lifts his hand again, and when Vince instinctively flinches, he laughs.

Funny. Vince used to like his laugh.

Now it makes him sick.

"I'll just go home," Vince whispers.

"Nope. I need you to stay. Nothing suspicious, nothing to make it obvious you leaving has anything to do with me. I'm networking tonight, Vince. You stay here, make conversation, have a great time, and you keep your hands and that mouth to yourself. Got it?"

"Owen-"

Owen kisses his cheek, and Vince freezes.

Lips against his earlobe, the soft nip of teeth, then they threaten to dig in to the sensitive skin at his neck, just barely grazing-

"Fine! Fine! I w-won't, I won't do-... fine, just get away from me!"

Owen pulls back, chuckling, reaching up to rub his thumb over a spot of wet shine from saliva near Vince's jugular, back and forth, back and forth.

Vince looks down at the floor, at their feet less than an inch apart. He doesn't dare move.

"Still mine," Owen murmurs. "We always belonged to each other, Vince. We always will."

He gives Vince another, entirely chaste, peck to the cheek and then walks back to the party, all but swaggering down the hall. Vince stays right where he is, breathing hard, using the wall he's leaning on to keep himself standing.

Then he runs to the bathroom and barely makes it to the toilet before all those fancy hors d'oeuvres he's been eating all evening come right back out of him, as if he can rid himself of the stain of Owen from the inside out.

Ten years feels like less than a day.

Christmas Shenanigans day 2

Shadow Knoghts do Secret Santa, this is who they get and what they get them.

Gene got Vylad, and went out of his way to fund the young prince a new, handcrafted bow with his initials carved into it and intricate designs on it. Vylad nearly fainted from hyperventilating from joy, as his current bow was ready to snap any day.

Vylad gets Ash and decided to hand make her a small ocarina, that was a match to his own, as a way of showing her they were family, connected.

Ash gets Sasha, and finds this woman the comfiest bed set she can so Sasha can relax nicely after dealing with her kids.

Sasha gets Zenix, and finds him aplot of land (Zenix has been wanting to build his own house for ages) along with tools and materials.

Zenix got Zane, and ended up gifting him a new sword, with the hilt decorated with gold markings.

Zane gets Vincent, and simply gives the guy a new set of armour.

Vincent got Aaron, who was gifted an entire box of shirts (Vincent asked the others what he should get Aaron, they all collectively agreed on shirts.)

Aaron got Laurance, and gave him a framed picture set of him, Aphmau, Garroth, and the rest of their friends, to decorate his room with. There's one picture hidden of Laurance and Vylad, star gazing (Ash if you can remember what I'm referencing, I'm gonna cry from joy), unaware that they were being photographed. Mote pictures of that night were given to him later, including one of the two kissing, and another of them just smiling like idiots at eachother.

Laurance got Jeoffrey, and found Abby, giving the two of them a reunion as his christmas gift. Jeoffrey cried for three hours on end upon sight of his daughter.

Jeoffrey got Gene, and gave him his present in private. Like Laurance, he was given a picture. This picture though, wasn't of multiple people in his life, rather a very specific family. It was a family portrait of Dante, Kawaii~chan, Nicole, Dmitri, and Nekoette-tan, including a small note written by Nekoette-tan, asking him to visit them so they could get to know Uncle Gene.

Bonus:

Dante woke up on christmas day to find a communucation amulet under their tree, for him with a note. It was strange looking, and the note he recieved told him how to work it. When he followed the instructions, Gene's voice, pre-recorded, spoke to him, apologizing and telling him how much he loved and missed him, how sorry and horrible he felt for what he did, and how he hoped Dante was having a good Christmas. Needless to say, Dante cried for a good hour and a halt after that.

I just wanted to drop this voice canon video I found because I wanted to share this with someone and I loved their choices. I saw a YouTube video by Dmitri A. that had Jason Momoa as Muriel and Vincent Piazza as Lucio.

The choice for Muriel for me was a "Why didn't I think of that!" moment. But the Lucio one impressed me because I was having trouble picturing actors native to New Jersey with that particular type of voice. The only one I can name with some thought is Joe Pesci.

Boy, if I had a nickel for every time I heard a Jason Momoa Muriel vc... I’m very picky about voice, though. I’m glad you found choices you liked!

on the subject of dialect, though: Vincent Piazza is a New Yorker. While NY and NJ have a lot of overlap in sound changes and vocabulary, there is a big difference between the dialects. (treating them as interchangeable is a pet peeve of mine - but like I said, I’m picky about voice.)

There are a lot more actors from NJ than you’d expect 😂 and it’s a much less Goodfellas, Guys-and-Dolls dialect than people think, too. Joe Pesci is a New Jerseyan, and either he or Danny DeVito is probably the first NJ accent people think of? but so are Paul Rudd, Ethan Hawke, Meryl Streep, Kirsten Dunst, Zach Braff, Christopher Reeve, Zoe Saldana, Bruce Willis... 

If you want to hear a nice, modern Jersey sound, I recommend watching interviews with any of them. I lean toward interviews for vcs, rather than clips from movies, because most actors use a dialect onscreen that’s different from their natural speech. (That’s another thing that bugs me in some of the voice headcanon videos floating around - using movie clips as references. An actor putting on a dialect for a role is very different from someone who actually has that dialect.) Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, and Bruce Willis especially have a lot of the sound changes I like. ☕

However, young people can get surprisingly mean. After Sergei's new mate, Melanie, found out about his fundations, she started to make a plan how to force Sergei leave all of his legacy for her. Best idea? Give him a better heir than Dmitry was. Get onto your own feet Dmitry could not handle the current situation in his life and decided to run away from his abuse father and his new rival. But who would accept a half-wild wolf cup in thier nest? With people's prejudices Dmitry started calling streets his new home since he had no other choice. And returning to his father? He would rather die than that. It didn't take Dmitry long to understand money are a key to, at least, standart life. But due to his low age no-one would employ a kid into their business... except for black markets and perverts. Ready or not, Dmitry knew living only from garbage wouldn't keep him alive for long. Now Vincent earned his new identity and could finally afford a smaller flat and a proper food. He visited his "family" only few times since that. After that, he tried to focuse on his new, hopefully better, life. Luck! Luck! Luck! But that doesn't last forever With higher earnings everything went much more smooth. Vincent asked for asylum in a new region for young adults who aspired to find a job a leave the place as soon as possible. The workers of that place gave him few tips for work with recommendation. Another long years of his life Vincent kept up like a security guard. Was it a coincidence or not? The same working place was requested for a quite young female irbis immigrant, Vincent's future life partner - Sherab Azuki. Both of them did not honour the ancient traditions since Azuki was brought up by pair of ibex. Vincent knew this will be his life partner and tried his best to not lose her - he learned Japanese, found another two jobs for better earnings and even bought their own flat, that all only for his beloved Azuki. At the top of it, the pair was lucky to have their common child - Rozaline, tehir sweet Rose. Vincent could not even express his excitement and joy for his new, true family. His daughter and partner gave him new energy for their future life. Vincent tried to do his best he could, tried to be better father then his was. However, Vincents death number appeared once again... After the wolf came back from his work, he could not believe his eyes - Rose and Azuki were murdered. Who could do that? Someone who feared ancestros such as Vincent and Azuki were? Someone who did not accept hybrids? Someone who new Vincent was related to Sergei? There were so many options yet no-one could finds the true sinner of this terrible crime. Waiting for death The new energy quickly vanished, Vincent lost all of his jobs, his flat, his new hope. What did he do wrong for such terrible things that happened to him? Lost in emptiness of his inner world and left with despair, Vincent didn't try to continue in his life. Isolated at the far edge of the large city, somewhere in the middle of ruins, he waited for death to consume him. To quicken his "process" he started damaging his organs, especially lungs. But to the wolf's surprise his younger brother, now successful businessman like their father was, offered him a help. Vincent didn't trust his half-brother, but Frederich's current power over regions forced Vincent to join him. What an irony they ended up in the same place where it all began - in the old rotten building, now one of the greatest and high productionable metal factories in northern part of USA. Vincent wasn't surprised that this all inherited Frederich, now that their father is gone. But why so sudden? Even though Vincent was offered a job and a place to live, his current life was like a street's rat - hidding from the world and waiting for death... That all changed a young cat Vincent found behind the factory almost death, yet still breathing... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Even tho Vincent's past was more drastic, Vincent's and Raven's lives are somehow very alike... This kind of "storytelling" leaves a lots of quetions. Does the Sergei's death and Vincent's murdered family have a connection? And what about Frederich? We haven't heard much of him in this post... Disenchantment has returned for a third season and its amazing ensemble of veteran voice actors has returned with it. The new season also boasts some impressive guest stars, who only appear for an episode or two, but have a major impact upon the story and setting.

Set in a fantasy realm that may also be the same reality as Futurama, Disenchantment centers around Princess Tabeanie, or Bean for short. A hard-drinking rebel who has little use for her father's ideas about marrying her off to secure an alliance with a neighboring nation, Bean feels that there's some great destiny awaiting her somewhere outside the gates of Dreamland. She's right, but she's also not too crazy about fulfilling that destiny, which involves paying a debt her mother's family owes Hell and having a crown screwed into her head.

Season 3 picks up right where season 2 ended, with Bean having escaped being burned at the stake as a witch by a mob of Dreamlanders only to find herself surrounded by an entirely different mob of Trogs: a race of stunted, sub-terrain cave dwellers, who are in league with Bean's treacherous mother, Queen Dagmar. Here's a rundown of all the returning cast of Disenchantment and the roles that they play, as well as all the guest stars with major roles in season 3.

The lead heroine of Disenchantment, Bean is not your typical tomboy princess who wants adventure in the great wide somewhere. She'd be much happier if she just had the freedom to get wasted and pick up whatever cute guys she could find at the tavern, but fate (and the rest of the world, it seems) have other plans for her. She is voiced by Abbi Jacobson, who is best known as the creator and star of Broad City. She can also be heard in Bojack Horseman as the voice of Todd's ex-girlfriend, Emily.

Luci is Bean's own personal demon, bonded to her for all eternity to push her to the path of wickedness. This proved to be a much easier job than Luci's masters in Hell had anticipated, and he soon began to slack off on his demonic duties to run a bar and contribute to the general wickedness of Dreamland as a whole. Luci is voiced by Eric André, who is perhaps most famous as the creator and host of The Eric André Show. He also voiced the hyena Azizi in The Lion King remake.

Too cynical for the world of elves and too naïve for the world of man, Elfo is a half-elf who isn't entirely sure where he belongs. He has found a place at Bean's side, but his crush on her is unrequited and the only other love he seems to find is in all the wrong places (very wrong, incredibly sick and filthy wrong places). Elfo is voiced by writer/actor Nat Faxon, who is probably best known for his collaborations with Jim Rash, such as The Descendants and The Way, Way Back. He also played a lead in the FX show Married and the Netflix comedy series Friends From College. More recently, he's provided the voice for Captain Underpants in The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants in Space and will be playing Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Detours series.

  Absolute ruler of Dreamland and Bean's beloved (if begrudging) father, King Zøg starts season 3 in ill health and on the verge of losing his life along with his crown. Naturally Zøg being Zøg, he's more concerned about the hat than his health. He is voiced by animation legend John DiMaggio, who is well known to Futurama fans as the voice of Bender. He also provided the voice for Jake the Dog in Adventure Time, Dr. Drakken on Kim Possible, and even Marcus Fenix in the Gears of War video game series. Recently, he voiced Heidegger in the English dub of the Final Fantasy VII remake. He also voiced both King Shark and the demon Trigon in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.

The second wife of Zøg, who abandoned him and Dreamland to seek a new life as Queen of the Pirates, Oona returns to Dreamland in Disenchantment season 3. She is voiced by Tress MacNeille, who has voiced multiple characters on both The Simpsons and Futurama, including Agnes Skinner and Mom (of Mom's Friendly Robot Corp.). MacNeille also provides the voices for Prince Derek and the Archdruidess who leads Dreamland's state religion. She is also beloved as the voice of Dot Warner from Animaniacs.

Heir to the throne of the neighboring kingdom of Bentwood, Prince Merkimer was intended to be Bean's second fiancée after the untimely impalement of his older brother. While the wedding was called off after he was turned into a talking pig, Merkimer continued to hang around the palace of Dreamland being sad and/or drunk. He is voiced by British comedian Matt Berry, who is famous for his appearances on The IT Crowd, Toast of London, and What We Do In The Shadows. He can currently be heard in The Watch, lending his voice to a magic sword named Wayne.

A torturer and executioner by trade, Stan is still a jovial man who does his job with a kind word and a craftsman's eye. He is voiced by British comedy legend Noel Fielding, who is well-known as one half of The Mighty Boosh and for playing Richmond in The IT Crowd. Viewers may recognize him as a co-presenter for The Great British Bake-Off. He also lent his voice to Balthazar in The LEGO Movie 2.

Still best known for playing the role of Michael Bolton in Office Space, David Herman went on to become one of the most prolific voice actors in Hollywood. He voices several characters in Disenchantment, the most notable being the Herald of Dreamland. He also provides the voices for Bean's uncle Jerry and the snarky spa attendant Chazz. He can also be heard as Mr. Frond in Bob's Burgers and Dmitry in Central Park.

Bean's mother and King Zøg's first wife, Dagmar is a wicked witch who has big plans for Bean involving some sort of prophecy. Season 3 will find her once again manipulating her daughter for her own sinister designs. Dagmar is voiced by Sharon Horgan, a comedian and voice actor who has appeared in several British sitcoms including Catastrophe and This Way Up. She provides the voices for Courtney Portnoy in Bojack Horseman and Kathleen in Bob's Burgers and also appeared in the movie Game Night

One of the most prolific voice actors in the business, Maurice LaMarche is perhaps most famous for his impression of Orson Welles, whom he played on both The Simpsons and Futurama. His voice was also dubbed over Vincent D'Onofrio's performance as Orson Wells in Tim Burton's biographical film Ed Wood. LaMarche's chief role on Disenchantment is the treacherous, three-eyed minister Odval, but he voices a number of supporting roles as well, such as the legendary demon hunter Big Jo.

Bunty is Bean's simple-minded, ever-pregnant maid. She is voiced by Lucy Montgomery, who will be familiar to many fans of British comedy. She appeared in the 2011 revival of Absolutely Fabulous, The Armstrong and Miller Show, Bellamy's People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Tracy Breaks the Internet. She can also be heard on a number of children's programs, having lent her voice to both Thomas the Tank-Engine and Bob the Builder.

The chief wizard of Dreamland ever since he was allowed to put stars on his dunce cap, Sorcerio is perhaps the most incompetent member of Dreamland's ruling council — a low bar to jump over. He is voiced by legendary voice actor Billy West, who is instantly recognizable to fans of Futurama as the voice of Fry, Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan and Professor Farnsworth. West has provided several iconic voices over his long career, including the title characters from The Ren & Stimpy Show and Doug. West pulls quadruple-duty on Disenchantment as well, also providing the voices for the Jester, Sir Mertz, and the Elf King Rulo.

Season 3 of Disenchantment briefly finds Elfo confined to a freak show, where he befriends a sarcastic mermaid named Mora who has dreams of being an actress. Mora is voiced by Meredith Hagner, who might be recognized as Portia Davenport from Search Party. She also voiced Madison on Bob's Burgers.

Rich Fulcher as Sir Turbish - Best known for his work with Noel Fielding and Matt Berry on various projects, Rich Fulcher returns to voice the awkward but well meaning Sir Turbish.

Lauren Tom as Trixy - Well known to Futurama fans as the voice of Amy Wong, Lauren Tom lends her voice to Trixy: a female Torg who develops a truly disturbing attraction to Elfo.

Richard Ayoade as Alva - Best known as Maurice Moss from The IT Crowd, Richard Ayodae plays Alva, the mysterious man who essentially rules Steamland.

Phil LaMarr as God - Best known to Futurama fans as the voice of Hermes Conrad, Phil LaMarr returns as the voice of God, the chief deity of Disenchantment's cosmology.
