Details about Hermann Gottlieb's personality in the novelization that (probably) came from the bio written by Guillermo del Toro.

With Newt and Hermann's bios never being posted on Guillermo del Toro's Twitter account like Mako, Raleigh, and Pentecost's were, I decided to try and comb the novelization for information that might have been derived from their bios, based on it dovetailing with Guillermo del Toro's general writing style and habits. The following is a list of personality/psychological-related stuff that I currently believe were based on Hermann's bio: Psych evaluation reveals fundamental need to create distance between self and any problem, using data and mathematics as buffer. Obsessive neatness of person and workspace also reveals this impulse to maintain controlling distance. Currently estranged from father due to differences of opinion about value of Jaeger project as opposed to Pacific Perimeter Program. Inveterate filer of complaints, primarily against Kaiju Science colleague Dr. Newton Geiszler (q.v.). PPDC psychological staff recommends accepting but not acting on these complaints. (p. 73-74) Note: The above comes from Hermann's personnel dossier. Since Mako, Raleigh, and Pentecost's dossiers are all very clearly abridged versions of the bios Guillermo del Toro wrote, one can assume it's the same for Hermann's. Also, filing ridiculous complaints is very much the kind of thing del Toro might play for laughs, similar to how the character of Tom Manning was used for comedy in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. He [Newt] went to the fridge and dug around in it until he had half a salami and cheese sandwich, some German potato salad, and a bag of baby carrots that belonged to Hermann. (p. 98-99.)

Note: Guillermo del Toro's character bios pretty much always mention a number of specific food items characters enjoy eating.

Gottlieb was soldering together a robot can I build an intelligence that will pass a Turing test and if I could of course I can I must never say anything about it until it is done or Father will (p. 268-269) Note: The above is supposed to represent Hermann's stream of consciousness during his drift with Newt and baby Otachi, hence the odd writing style. With problematic to horrible fathers being a common element in del Toro's work, I think it's a safe guess that this was all based on his bio. Unfortunately, the novelization omits Hermann's POV except for when he drifts with Newt, so there isn't a lot of material here. But what there is suggests that Hermann was conceptualized as a deeply traumatized individual who tries to avoid conflict wherever possible, likely to the point of avoiding people when he can, and trying to supplicate them when he can't. This, I believe, is evidenced in the elevator scene, where Newt says "Hermann! These are human beings! Why don't you say hello?", and where Hermann (unsuccessfully, lol) tries to head off potential conflict with Raleigh with "You'll have to excuse him, he's a kaiju groupie; he loves them." (And speaking of the elevator scene, if you haven't seen the extended version where Newt addresses Raleigh as "guy" and tells Hermann to stop saluting Pentecost yet, you should!)

It also seems that Hermann was imagined as someone who tries to cope with all the things he can't control by controlling everything that he can - one notable example being 50% of the k-sci lab. It would appear that "no kaiju entrails on my side of the room!" doesn't just indicate a desire to keep his space physically clean, but it's also indicative of his ongoing refusal to let the chaotic and unpredictable Newt inside emotionally.

So yeah, it would really be great if all of the character bios were released (not to mention the 250 page universe bible... sigh), but... since they aren't, I'm just gonna have to resort to doing stuff like this, lol.

I spent like three days trying to make up my mind on this, and I'm still not satisfied, but as of the moment, in no particular order:

The Best Boys

Mr. William Guppy of Kenge & Carboy, Bleak House

He's awkward, he's manipulative, he has no real social skills to speak of, and he's in love. I actually really disliked this character when I first read the book circa 2011, but as Burn seems wont to do, I ended up being completely won over in the end. ^_^; His Guppy is expressive, less a comic relief and almost sympathetic. I mentioned in a conversation with @synthapostate about how Guppy is technically an antagonist, but he's played in such a way that you really can't see it (unlike the book). Also the camera is half in love with Burn this entire series, and it makes it very, very easy to fall in love with this dorky, curly-haired puppy of a man.

Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, Pacific Rim & Pacific Rim: Uprising

I could write sonnets about Hermann for how much I've come to love him. 😅 He's one of the Characters of All Time for me. From his passion, his stubborn resilience, and his sharp humor, to his unwavering loyalty for those he cares for and his ability to care so deeply, how could I not irrevocably fall for him? (Also singlehandedly the cause of the 2023 Burn Binge.) Hermann found his way into my heart from the very beginning, but I never realized how at home he had made himself until the day I turned around and he was patiently waiting for me to see him. I think I fell for him and Newt in the same fell swoop, and my love for both of them is unwavering.

Dr. Owen Harper, Torchwood

I've been in love with this bastard since 2013; I've been repressing that adoration for 10 years. I- I don't really remember the exact moment that my opinion of Owen shifted from extreme dislike to him carving a permanent place in my very being, but there it is. He's sarcastic, an incorrigible flirt, and has one of the biggest, kindest hearts I've ever come across in fiction. At the time, I was pre-Med, and I aspired to be half as compassionate a doctor as him. After Exit Wounds, I gave up Torchwood (I couldn't, not with Tosh gone too.), but I've slowly been dipping my toes back in via Burn's reading of some of the books & the Big Finish audios. It's been 10 years, yet I think I'm more in love with this bastard than I ever was before. (And okay, I admit, he might be my favorite-favorite ^_^;)

Sgt. Detective William Blore, And Then There Were None

Bill, Bill, Bill... He's a crooked cop, he's tired of everyone's nonsense, he's filled with regret, he's probably gay. Detective Blore is yet another classic lit character that I first met back in the late 20-aughts, early 2010s who I really didn't care for. Then 2023 rolls around, and not only did I come to love him in this adaptation, but I've ended up going on an Agatha Christie bender because of it. Burn made me... well love would be too strong a word, but I definitely rank Blore as "a poor little meow meow."

Major Edmund Hewlett, TURN

How could this list be at all complete without including my beloved major? (Just picking a gif for this made me realise how badly I've missed him. 🥺) Edmund is... How do I explain how much I adore this guy? How do I possibly pin down the levels of pride I have in his journey, in his growth, explain the way my heart aches at the twists and turns that will tear him apart and build him back even stronger? How do I possibly do justice in conveying how damn aspirational he is, how merciful, how delightful? I can't, really. He's a force of nature that one must experience for themselves. (And I need to resume my rewatch methinks~)

Ben Jarvis, Cheat

I... I have entire essays I want to write about this guy. I have theories I want to discuss, but as most of them are... I can't. Yet. Maybe soon? I- Anyway. Ben was a huge surprise, and definitely nowhere close to what I was expecting when I finally got around to watching this show. I would be lying to say it wasn't a pleasant surprise, and I absolutely love how Burn was able to do a lot of solo work this series, with a lot of focus on body language and his uncanny knack for killer expressions.

Jacko Argyle, Ordeal By Innocence

This... This beautiful little shit ♡ One of the first Burn movies I actively chose to seek out, my second in his Agatha Christie adaptations, and my first dive into gif making. And Jacko-! Oh, Jacko... You stole my heart then broke it in only a few, few precious moments of screentime and backstory. He haunts the entire film, he haunts me still, and I'm so glad I had the chance to meet him.

Martin, Up There

Martin is absolutely one of my favourite characters, especially for his absolute growth during the film. He crawls out of his downward spiral, he finds himself again, and ultimately discovers that there can be life after death. He just- He's grumpy, he's beautifully sarcastic, he's depressed, he's loved, and he just- Seriously I love him. Martin feels like a friend who I haven't seen in an age, and it's always a good day to bump into him again.

Reverend Benedict Marley, Lark Rise to Candleford

I almost forgot my favourite clergyman??? D:

Benedict Marley came into my life just to shake my very foundations, send me on an existential journey of self discovery, and waited for me at the end of it all with a soft smile and encouraging words. He only had one episode in the show, but his story was so easily woven and understood, his humility humbled me, and in ways that make me almost afraid to admit aloud- I felt seen in a way that I ever so rarely am. I connected to him; I understand him. He has depths that I could hardly explain in a single paragraph, but I can say that- out of all these characters- my feelings are birthed more out of a very deep respect and admiration.

I can't say this list will stay the same- I'm far from through with Burn's portfolio- but for his on-screen roles, these guys firmly remain top-tier for me. :)

Below is my Newt Geiszler / Hermann Gottlieb fanfic round-up for 2023. It summarizes all my Newmann fics published in 2023 as well as a preview of what’s to come in 2024!

Chasing the Rabbit: 5,373 words, rated T At a crossroads regarding his own encrypted personnel file, Hermann must decide whether or not to confirm his long-held suspicions about an event in his past. A story of old wounds, new beginnings, drift compatibility and a shared history with Newton that goes deeper than either of them could have imagined.

Shutterbug: 10,872 words, rated E Post Operation Pitfall and part way through the Black Velvet Rabbits’ world tour, Newt and Hermann find themselves once again in Berlin where Newt jumps at the chance to fulfill a fantasy or two Hermann didn’t know he had. A sexy, standalone sequel to ‘Compositions’ involving a pair of black rabbit ears and a camera.

Something Borrowed: 13,172 words, rated T Newt and Hermann are asked to be in the bridal party for Tendo and Alison’s upcoming wedding alongside Mako and Raleigh. Between planning the stag do, setting up the wedding photoshoot and writing a best man speech, who’s got time to finally admit to your long-time lab partner how you really feel about them? A wedding-centric Newmann getting together story (side pairings: Tendo / Alison; Mako / Raleigh).

Strikethrough: 2,062 words, rated T When Hermann seeks his feedback on a print interview about their joint contribution to Operation Pitfall, Newt jumps at the chance to get the love confession from his labmate he’s been waiting on for years by writing it himself. A Pacific Rim adventure mystery set in the gas-lit streets of Sherlock Holmes’ Victorian London.

Nameless: currently 8,000~ words, rated M Historical + mythical creature / selkie AU: After a personal tragedy and irreparable fall-out with his family, Hermann Gottlieb leaves the comforts of his life in London to exile himself to a tiny town on the coast of Scotland. Day 1 - How did you first get into Torchwood?

fdhkf ok ok so basically. i do not remember exactly what happened. this happens to me often like i can never remember what i came across that first got me into the media. with torchwood i at least know it was the fact that everyone was bi, but i dont rmr if i saw a post about it, or if i was fucking around on tvtropes or something - i legit cannot remember. i remember seeing a gifset of gay torchwood kisses p early on, but i dont think that was like the inciting incident? that mighta come about when i was doing research into the alleged fruitiness FHSJDFKDS. i do know i've been aware of jack as a character for at least a decade, like i'd heard of the harkness test + i was aware that he was 'that slutty doctor who guy', and also, coincidentally, in the fandom i was in in 2015, someone wrote a crossover fic where my fav slept with jack and ianto and i read it 😭 had no idea who they were, i hopefully at least googled them but fhsdjkf. but anyway i was like 'ooh a show with an all bisexual cast? color me intrigued.' i'd never touched dw either, i had friends who liked it when i was in middle school but i always saw it as kinda dorky fhsdkj (namely cuz my friends were dorks), but yeah, i was reeled in by the concept of sci-fi bisexuals. but not fully! it was in like 'yeah ill put that on my watchlist and get around to it in 2 yrs' territory

but then, as im looking into it, i realize owen's played by burn gorman, who i only knew from pac rim, which i'd fixated on briefly in 2018, riiiight before pru came out. my pr fixation p much revolved entirely around newt; i liked newmann, but i didn't get super into it. hermann himself was kind of an afterthought, i wasn't big on him at the time. anyway i saw owen and recognized hermann's actor, and my initial reaction was like "WHAT DO U MEAN HERMANN FUCKING GOTTLIEB'S IN THE SLUTTY BISEXUAL SHOW??? THIS I MUST SEE! HERMANN GOTTLIEB KISS MEN REAL NOT CLICKBAIT?!?!?!!??" and that was literally the thing that made me watch it. LAWL and the first few eps were so damn jarring bc i continued to just associate owen with hermann initially. and worse yet, ive now developed a hefty crush on burn himself lmao, i think he's gorg and ive watched a lot of his stuff, but before i got into torchwood i only knew him from PR and i didnt find hermann attractive or even rlly compelling in the slightest (this has changed significantly; im in my hermann era as a pr fan. newt who). so it was also a lot of "WTF WHY IS HE HOT??? HUH???? DUDE NO WAY." it's since lost its novelty, but it was very jarring + amusing to me at first, trying to reconcile owen n hermann. its like if u ran into ur frumpy weird professor at leather night and he was the twink of ur dreams FDSKJFHDSKJFDSK

yeah so then i watched the show and it fucking smacked me over the head with a shovel bc its so fucking bad but its so fucking good. and very quickly my view of owen went from "wait a mf second why is not-hermann kind of 🫦 hiii mean slutty hermann hiii" to "wait. oh hes fucked up. oh hes sad. oh no i love him" to him being my third favorite character of all time. fff. but more on that tomorrow! hehehehe

Not at all unusually, (y/n) couldn't sleep.

He'd love to be able to chalk it up to nerves over the very pretty boy lying next to him, but around 3-4 hours of bored insomnia a night was typical for him. Not that Newton was settling his mind in any way.

Around 30 minutes ago, (y/n) had been strolling around familiar areas of the Shatterdome at a rather abhorrent hour beyond midnight, waiting to feel tired enough to go to bed. He'd felt fairly comfortable in his daggy night clothes (barefoot with an ugly nighting gown and a band t-shirt thrown over for no reason other than he found it funny), until he heard someone else clunkering around in the private lab he had just waltzed into far too confidently. It was the shared lab of doctors Hermann Gottlieb (currently at rest) and Newton Geiszler (currently looking up from his clunkering right up at (y/n)'s horrified face). Newton was in the dark sitting on his knees by a table of blue intestines, unidentifiable hunks of metal and apparatus filling both his hands and the space on the floor around him. Being that the boy was far away from the doorway where (y/n) stood, and in the dark, Newton's face could only just be made out.

At times unlike this, (y/n) liked to imagine they'd had a water-cooler-romance thing going on with their flirty hallway chats. Now, confronting the man's bloodshot eyes at night with no-one else around, the rosy relationship which he had been mentally blooming in the ample space left between now and their last interaction wilted. Newton suddenly seemed much more like a stranger in that moment. He tilted his barely-visible head.

"(y/n)?"

(y/n) gathered himself to respond, generating his best impression of a biting remark to drown out his anxiety.

"It's past your bedtime, Geiszler," he said playfully, and hopefully coolly. Newt smiled gladly, breathed out some kind of dialogue-serving chuckle.

"Yeah, yeah. I've just been having this theory-- I won't overwhelm you with kaiju junk again like you've warned me about-- but basically it goes back to the dinosaurs," (y/n) felt a fond, treacherous smile tug at his lips and forced a furrow to his brow accordingly. "It's fairly accepted that they evolved into birds, right? But we established that they were also a kaiju-test run. Did that not prove to their overlords that birds are more suited to survive Earthly conditions than reptiles in general? So, why not weaponise giant birds instead? And wh-"

"Newton, that is so stupid." Newton paused in a brief moment of derailment before his eyes flicked up to the ceiling, considering quite seriously before deciding how to react to this input. (y/n) really liked that about him. He noticed now that Newt wasn't wearing his glasses.

"Eeyeah. Yeaup. Might be," He replied finally with strained voice.

"C'mon, let's get you to bed-- do you even know how late it is?" (y/n) said, striding towards Newton, who stood slowly as he did.

"No-no-no-no-no nup, you're not stopping my flow here, (y/n). I've got a flow going on, you know?" He absent-mindedly deposited one hand-full of miscellaneous metal scraps onto the table behind him, some tumbling off the heap of kaiju intestines onto the floor before he turned to face the table. "You wanna hear about what I'm building right now? I'll tell you the rest of what I was saying, I promise it makes sense just gimmie a minute,"

"It's never gonna make sense because it's stupid, Newt." Having reached him now, (y/n) grabbed Newt's wrist as it was reaching for the intestine pile, apparently planning to use it in his explanation. He placed his other hand on Newt's back, feeling warm cotton. "You need to go to bed." (y/n) pushed lightly, guiding the scientist back to the door. He was met with absolutely no resistance, despite Newt's reluctance.

"Fine, fine I'll pick it up in the morning- but I'm not going to my room, you can't make me go all the way to my room. (y/n), it's so far away. Tell me why they would assign me to a room so far from my lab. There are rooms closer-by. I could have one of those! Why can't I have one of those?" (y/n) didn't slow his lead back to the exit, but removed his hand from Newt's back.

"Well one of those closer-by rooms is mine, and I have it because my expertise are not as valuable as yours so it's no big loss if your lab explodes and kills me and some other general technicians."

"Oh. That's shit."

"Sure. Do you have any choice other than making the trek to your abode anyway?"

"Oh, yeah I was just gonna sleep in the lab. I've done it before it's all good," Newt muttered tiredly, waving a hand as if dissolving some sense of how not all-good that was wafting in the air.

"I hate repeating myself but Newton, that is so stupid. You're not sleeping in here," (y/n) tried to spit out the next sentence so as to avoid holding his breath; "And if you won't go to your own room, then you're welcome to come to mine." Newt's head whipped up to look at (y/n). Though he almost missed it in his distraction with how Newt was cutely shorter than him, the man said with relief,

"Yeah? Can I really?"

"Yes. I offered, didn't I?" (y/n) replied, trying to remain somewhat stoic despite his joy. A sleepover with his crush. He suddenly felt even worse about his pyjamas as the pair finally advanced through the door into better lighting. Without thinking, (y/n) looked down to see what Newton was wearing, seeing Newt doing the same. He awaited some questions about his outfit, but nothing came before Newt looked away.

Newt was wearing an oversized black band-tee, similar to what (y/n) had on himself. It was typical. His tattoos looked brilliant, leaping down Newts arm in sharp juxtaposition to the black sleeves they emerged from.

"Love your dress. Not many guys can rock one like that."

"Thanks."

All that brings us back to (y/n) lying restlessly next to a very pretty boy, who doesn't seem to have fallen asleep yet either.

(y/n) shifted uncomfortably, feeling his boxers sitting wrong in some way.

Despite Newton's lack of opposal to it, (y/n) had rid himself of the embarrassing nightie before he got into bed, ending up in boxers and a shirt. Boxers which were sitting wrong in some way.

He readjusted them and rolled over, huffing childishly when they still felt unpleasant. A muffled laugh sounded from the other side of the bed.

"You good there man?" Newt asked, his ever-charming smile audible.

"Yes. Cold. Scratchy." (y/n) spoke into the blankets. Actually realising how cold he was, (y/n) reluctantly made to get out of bed for a jumper, pushing some blankets off of himself. "You cold too?"

He was about to stand, and offer a jumper to Newt when a warm hand emerged from the mess of blankets and latched onto his wrist. Every single one of (y/n)'s nerves seemed to rush to that spot and fixate on the touch. (y/n) didn't feel uncomfortable or cold anymore, he only felt Newton's palm press on the flat of his wrist, and his fingers grip around it as they tugged him back down into the bed.

"Yeah. 'Mm cold." Newton shuffled to manoeuvre the heap of blankets he was under to cover (y/n) as well, and then to snake his arms around him, yawning brazenly. "J'know you're kinda pretty? But like, really pretty? You really rocked that dress man, sure, but like-- you look great normally too. Am I making sense?"

Given that this had been far too much for (y/n) to handle already, he had absolutely no way to gauge the fact that Newton had just called him pretty. Really pretty, in fact. Cleverly, (y/n) pretended to be asleep, or perhaps deaf.

"No?" Newton continued. "It doesn't matter, I dunno what I'm talking about."

"You're really pretty too. Like a lot." (y/n) said, trying to sound begrudging. If anything, he was beyond relieved to get that out. At the same time, he hoped that Newt would forget everything by the morning. Or that he was sleep-talking.

In any case, (y/n) could feel Newt crack a smile behind him-- as if it warmed the air or made Brittany Spears smile, too, somewhere.

He wriggled closer, pressing his chest flush with (y/n)'s back and sticking his hands under his shirt to wrap around his stomach.

He nestled his face into the crook of (y/n)'s shoulder, every breath seeming to be full of pure electricity as it washed over his skin.

"So pretty..."

(y/n) fell asleep easily for the first time in his life, lying wrapped in warmth and joy.

that's all, folks. sorry if it's total shit in general it really is late and i do indeed have insomnia and very uncomfy clothes plus this is the third thing i have written ever. think it ended a little abruptly but i want to go to bed so whatever. this feels soooo slow-paceddd and wayy too long and veryyy out of character but whatever it's really about his face not his character if im being honest
