Reviewing Modern Who: Christmas of the Trees
The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe. The Doctor builds a Christmas funhouse wonderland for a family that’s sheltering in some creepy old house from the London Blitz, by way of repaying a favor to a nice lady who helped him out when he’d fallen from the sky once. They just got a telegram saying their father’s plane crashed in the English Channel, but their mother, Madge is keeping this information from them because that’s the sort of thing that ruins Christmas.
Anyway, one of the things in the funhouse wonderland is a portal to a wintry world where the trees produce Christmas ornaments and twinkle and it’s supposed to be safe but of course a Problem is about to Ensue and the children show up early and out of order and, long story short, some mining company is about to melt the forest with acid rain and use it for fuel, and the trees are sentient so they’ve built a big ol’ tower in the hopes of attracting someone to serve as a vessel for their life force, and it turns out they need someone who’s a mother to do it. Fortunately one shows up! The tower also flies through the time vortex, and Madge, thinking of her husband dying in the Channel, flies them home. It turns out that her flying through the time vortex saves her husband’s plane, though. It’s a Christmas miracle!
Credit where it’s due: episodes like this are where Moffat really shines, and this may well be the Christmasiest of the Christmas specials so far. B+
