I had another idea for this week’s @timepetalsprompts​ weekly drabble “obsession”

“Obsession”, her mother had called it.

All the hours she put in at Torchwood, day and night, to help build the Dimension Cannon. She wasn’t “eating enough”, she wasn’t “sleeping enough”. But none of that mattered because with every moment she spent on completing the machine she was one step closer to finding The Doctor.

The night before the first jump Rose passed by a clothing shop on the way home and stopped at the sight in the window. The jacket was leather like the one her first Doctor wore, yet blue like his eyes which led to the immediate purchase of the garment.

Now standing in the middle of the Torchwood lab, clad in the brand new protective armor and holding the almost fully charged yellow disc in her hand, Rose stared at that godforsaken white wall as she mentally prepared herself for the journey upon which she was about to embark.

It wasn’t obsession. It was determination.

She made him a promise of Forever and she was determined to keep it.

I just remembered I had this story this evening and have been encouraged to post by friends. It was written a few years ago for a charity anthology. The pitch was accepted, it was in by the deadline, within the wordcount limit... and then nothing. Chased a few times, never heard anything after confirmation of receipt. Found out a year or two later that it had been published without this story. I guess they liked the episode I fixed?

The theme was "what if?", and this sprang out of the question "what if Sarah Jane had said yes to one last trip in the previous episode?" I've always found Girl in the Fireplace to be tremendously out of character, and this seemed like a good opportunity to fix it.

This is un-betaed, all mistakes are mine, and of course I don't own the show or characters. Lines you recognise are also from the original episode. I've tagged with a ship, but it's at the canon-compliant, barely-acknowledged stage.

I suffered through several re-watches for this, so I hope it helps some of you.
