Music Diaries - 1/29/2024 - 2/4/2024
Though I am behind, it is interesting to revisit these records a longer period of time from when I was planning to review them like this. Here are some more records that I enjoyed.
My Personal Favorites (in no ranked order) - All albums are available on Spotify and YouTube Music:
Daniel Johnston - Hi How Are You || This record is something else. Though, as with a lot of famed outsider music, there is a sense of childlike innocence associated with it, there is a lot of actual musical chops that were shown by Daniel throughout. Besides this, the shifts between despair and hope, as well as mood to mood showcase a pretty whole picture of the artist as a person, relatively raw and uncut. The ending sequence of Keep Punching Joe and No More Pushing Joe Around show this shift between pessimistic and optimistic, showing a defiance towards his own circumstance.
Dominique Guiot - L'Univers De La Mer || The sound design in this old-school moog record is as such where it creates this pseudo-orchestral feeling while listening to it. It is fantastical, harkening to prog rock with its chord progressions and baroque attitude. It's quite relaxing yet holds an intensity through tight arrangement and energetic suites. Une Ballade Pour Une Goelette stands out to me due to its direct ties to medieval-esque folk, with the main difference being the partially synthesized nature. It feels nostalgic to those storybook videos I used to watch as a kid.
Vitesse X - Us Ephemeral || Though this is a modern electronic album, this artist brings the listener back to a time before that, smooth and made of chrome. Everything feels very polished instrumentation-wise, yet simplistic enough to be a throwback in the first place. There is also a good amount of shifts from sound to sound, exploring a variety of genres with that characteristic mechanical yet bright sheen. The opening and title track, Us Ephemeral, dunks the listener headfirst into these nostalgic vibes, showered with a wash of reverb, sprinkled with beeps and bloops while driven along by a substantial percussion line.
Buddy Ross - Running Around || This single became very well-known after being sampled by Frank Ocean, and I can see why it was chosen as a sample. The song itself consists of very soft-spoken synth music. It's not exactly like the synth of old but definitely resembles it with its soft tones and buzzy, noisy tones. The addition of acoustic instruments and percussion allows for a more dynamic sound, and the chords evoke a simple nostalgia or hope for something else.
Kim Jung Mi - Now || As a part of the nascent Korean rock movement in the 1970's, Kim's music takes both from the music local to her, as well as a lot of imported ideas from psychedelic rock. Overall, it leads to a more straightforward sound: slightly funky, slightly heavy, just a slight amount of things. What stands out the most would be her vocals, which lean further into Korean folk rather than rock music, causing her to mingle with the instrumentals in a way not many have achieved then or since. The track Spring balances these two elements well, with its arrangement taking from folk but the instrumentation adding additional layers of guitar and percussion, as well as orchestration, giving it a grand aspect.
Psychic TV - Dreams Less Sweet || This experimental record holds a lot of emphasis on more traditional sounding timbres, like choirs and bells. It's very quiet, understated, but not ambient in a traditional sense. It paints a unique picture with these unique subtle sounds, one which evokes a secret ritual of some sort. It's a kind of record you can't shove into the background. The Eden trilogy of songs near the end of the album are the most clear. There is a slight bit of still quiet yet industrial sections, but a good amount is just found noise, whether it be an animal growling, beeping from a phone.. It leads to a very disorienting experience due to the contrast between full song and near silence.
The Winstons - Color Him Father || The record with the infamous Amen break. However that alone doesn't really represent them the best. They seem to be a more soul-driven band with cuts in both R&B and country rock. There are even a few covers scattered throughout. All of it is tinged with a bit of organ and gospel influence, and it's very down to earth. I will personally say that Amen, Brother is still my favorite track. The amount of energy they bring for this single song rivals anything else in this album instrumentally, with the drums being dynamic throughout and the horns blasting it into outer space.
Johan Timman - Trip Into The Body || The concept of this album is very strange, taking a trip into the human body. Each track is even named after a specific part of the body. Despite how abstract a lot of the sound is, the album works in fleshing out each environment to at least be somewhat unique. Light, plump mix, with a mix of whimsy and intensity. As with many albums of this tinge, it is a bit off-kilter and feels odd, but it is genuinely pretty fun. Combined with the concept it's very novel as well. The Windpipe and The Lungs is the most obvious form of this concept coming to fruition, with digital rendering of breathing as well as this jaunty synth arrangement in the back that pulls out a lot of stops.
Manuel Gottsching - E2-E4 (Mixed) || This music from this krautrock veteran almost seems like a precursor to modern dance music. The overall shifts in sound are subtle, with its lo-fi yet driving percussion and minimal synths slowly oscillating from one pattern to the other. With the format the album is in, a mix, it leads to a very trancelike atmosphere that would be novel for the time it was released. Since it is more of a jam session than a collection of tracks, it is near impossible to choose a single track or set of tracks as a favorite.
Bongwater - The Power of Pussy || Just by the name of the band, it is easy to tell that this record would be rebellious and raucous. A lot of these songs seem to directly confront normalized gender roles, taking away from them through sarcasm. Other songs tend to explicitly speak about sexuality in a panicked sense, displaying the confusion of it all. The sound accompanying this is pretty heavy on average. The closer, Folk Song, shows some of the most visceral lyrics and vocal performances in the album, questioning meaning directly and even parodying Yes at the beginning. It is the most extreme of this sardonic energy this album has.
Honorable Mentions:
Spike Fuck - The Smackwave EP | Though the record is very haggard it shows a level of emotional honesty that comes off as very earnest to me. The lyrics about loss and breakup actually work with the pretty laidback, almost lethargic, instrumentation. Because of this limpness it almost comes off resigned yet self-aware, which is a mood I find pretty rare in music. Very intriguing choices made here.
Lustt - Pillow Talk | Apparently this was sampled in a famous vaporwave record, and I recognized the melody instantly when I heard it. It has all the promise a good sample has, shimmery funky vibes, while having synthesizers which give it a glittery, futuristic sheen. I really like that synth line that glides across the track, as well as the house-like groove that keeps it in step.
Solid Space - Space Museum | Though it does have a lot of stock synthpop elements, the way these are played with, through both the arrangement resembling post-punk and the instrumentation being all digital, as well as the looseness, create a rudimentary bounce to the album. The mix is a bit odd but otherwise it shows how synths can be used in a less rigid context.
Stennes - Eyes Didn't Let Me Open | This record features sample-heavy future funk plunderphonic beats. Lots of whimsy, and very loud when it comes to layering the samples together. It's a bit clumsy in that sense, but I think it leans into it. There are interludes that lean into sentence splicing and dialogue remixing, and by embracing that, these rougher parts make sense as a sonic choice.
Two Lone Swordsmen - Stay Down | The synths in this record create a psychedelic, muted effect, alongside digital alteration to make the synths warp or even reverse at some points. A lot of it feels crispy and old, so it makes it feel like there are actual tapes being manipulated or something far more antique. Alongside the slimy sound design, the record feels alive.
Other Albums I Liked!
R. Stevie Moore - Ku Klux Glam
Cluster - Zuckerzeit
CC Dust - Shinkansen No. 1 / New Ways
Krisma - Chinese Restaurant
Free Kitten - Sentimental Education
I have been busy with work so this haphazard schedule will probably continue to an extent. I do hope that eventually it can readjust to what it was before someday, but who knows really. Whether work goes well or not, I wish whoever is reading to have a good day. ^^
