MONTERO (LIL NAS X)
Tumblr media
Selected by Taco
OCHIENG’S TAKE
Favorite Song: Scoop
Spit Yo' Game/Talk Yo' Shit: I recently watched a clip of Vince Staples where he talked about superstars in rap, and a lot of what he said boiled to the fact that artists nowadays more often than not are selling moments and moving product more than they are actually moving music. If you look at the newest generation of musical entertainers, there’s arguably no one better than this Lil Nas X. Now I say all this to say that I didn’t really vibe with this album unfortunately, I obviously don’t know his creative process and I’d hate to try and pigeonhole anybody especially since his claim to fame was a genre bending smash hit. But a lot of the songs in this album to me felt they were engineered to try and cover as many bases instead of catering to Nas’ strengths. The standout tracks to me felt like the tracks where Nas had the most fun, “DOLLA SIGN SLIME,” “SCOOP,” and “INDUSTRY BABY” fall into this category. But nonetheless I still respect Nas as an artist, provocateur, and entertainer immensely and can’t wait for his next moves.
Lit-mus Test: 🔥(and a half for good measure)
VANESSA’S TAKE
Favorite Song: Industry Baby (ft. Jack Harlow)
Spit Yo' Game/Talk Yo' Shit: The context for my review is that after the roaring success of Old Town Road, most of my engagement with Lil Nas X's stardom was via his star presence, rather than his music — he's cute, seems very interesting and approachable in interviews, he's hilarious on social media, and by the by he releases a lot of bops that I like. Despite this, I wasn't able to really get excited about a full album; those biases are mine to grapple with. In the spirit of record club, of course I listened to MONTERO in full many times over, but I couldn't get into it and had forgotten most of the songs when the time came to write this review. Undeniably Lil Nas X is a good singer and rapper; he hits some powerful notes on both MONTERO and SCOOP - which, of the songs I didn't know before spinning the full album, is my favourite and nearly took the crown as my favourite song. Yet, I do think this time around the best songs were in fact the singles and the rest left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. If HOLIDAY was on this album I would've added a full flame to my rating because I absolutely love that song. Also, give me a Deluxe Edition without Jack Harlow on INDUSTRY BABY!!!
Lit-mus Test: 🔥🔥(and a half for good measure)
OBELLA’S TAKE
Favorite Song: Scoop
Spit Yo' Game/Talk Yo' Shit: So I just gave this album a re-listen in the gym today before writing this here review. And there is actually something to the whole "voice of a generation" thing when you consider that this album is definitely made by a queer Black kid who was a teen in the 2010s and played Rock Band while keeping up with undergound rappers on Soundcloud. Yfm? And for that alone it cements Lil Nas X as a pop star and in fact, yes, an Industry Baby (zing!). It grabs from a lot of different genres and makes enjoyable bops in each space. It grounds Old Town Road as less of a genre-bender and more of a genre-lender, but still I feel it is representative of how young montero is taking on the music industry and pop culture scene as a talented and versatile artist. It speaks to my overall feelings on the album that even though I really enjoyed my re-listen it didn't result in any of the songs going back into the rinse & repeat playlist (though I considered Scoop again, alas I beat that song into the ground the first go around). It gets a solid rating but it's def not 5 stars imo. However I look forward to how Lil Nas X is gonna grow with time. An Industry Toddler might make something CRAZY who can say?
Lit-mus Test: 🔥🔥🔥
CALVIN’S TAKE
Favorite Song: Dolla $ign Slime
Spit Yo' Game/Talk Yo' Shit: Lil Nas X might be one of the best people alive at generating a "let me stop and see what's going on over there" moment that I actually want to hear about -- at a popstar level (insane degree of difficulty IMO). Usually, they're media / pop-cultural, the type of things that make people say "they should teach this in schools!!!" lmao. But I think this "moment" approach applies to his music too, and that happens to be the subject of today's class. I enjoy X's music the most when he squeezes out those little moments of life on record. "I'm just trying to be the dailyyyy....SCOOP!" has me doing air basketball finger rolls at random. "He don't run from nothing dawgg, get your soldiers, tell em that the breaks is ovvvvveerrr" makes me feel like I'm trying to wrap my arms around a rocket that just launched from wherever the NASA folks go when they're not WFH. As much as I rooted for it, those bursts of energy are few and far between on this album, for me. I genuinely feel guilty about pigeonholeing a person and artist who is so full of creativity, fluidity, and the future -- but I want way more Nas X where he's rapping. GIVE ME A SONG WITH NICKI NOW, though I'm sure he could never have predicted how Onika would be moving in Big 2022. Because rap can be too confining, maybe just more instances where he's on a song that has the same kind of bite as the Daytrip produced records. One thing that unites the two songs I referenced (and my favorite, "Dolla Sign Slime") in my mind is that they KNOCK, and I personally feel that is a better representation of the urgency of the message that Nas has within him. Even if I never get what I want though, I'll still always have my ears open for whatever moment is next from him.
Lit-mus Test: 🔥🔥

what r ur thoughts on the montero album if u listened to it?
I gave it a listen through and I’ll revisit it again I’m sure! My musical go-tos don’t tend to be pop or hip hop in general, and I don’t listen to rock as much as I used to, but I love him and I enjoyed the album, it had so many fun moments. I think Industry Baby is still probably the best track on the album in terms of bops, and I’m always a little sad when I like the singles the most from a release because it feels like dessert before dinner, but it is what it is. I really liked Life After Salem, Tales of Dominica and Void, and Sun Goes Down makes me want to cry when I think of the video.
It’s just really nice to hear how openly gay so many of the lyrics are— I love that for him and for the genre. There were some moments where I was hoping for more consistent lyrical maturity or play and less dependency on repeating a catchy phrase or hook, but I don’t know that it was ever Lil Nas X’s intention to be a deep lyricist or poet so I take that with a grain of salt. He is also definitely not a singer but I support people singing even if they don’t have the strongest voice— though I feel like men and/or white people get away with that more often.
I didn’t care for most of the features but I am very happy to see peer support of his artistry!

Lil Nas X and safety vs speaking
How Lil Nas X Is Revolutionizing Hip-Hop as an Empowered Gay Star By Jem Aswad, Ramin Setoodeh (variety.com)
Tumblr media
[...] What a difference a few traumatic months can make: The Nas who has reemerged is, he says, “a totally different person” — an outspoken and empowered gay man unafraid to express truth in his art.
Far from “Old Town Road,” the rap-country earworm that famously was recorded for $50 in a small Atlanta studio and has become the longest-running No. 1 hit in Billboard Hot 100 history, Nas’ recent lyrics, videos, TV appearances and especially public statements are exponentially more honest, autobiographical and queer. And while he avoids grandiose statements about being a pioneer or a trailblazer for the LGBTQ community — “Let’s fuckin’ go, gay agenda!” he wrote last month, tongue firmly in cheek, when retweeting that he had the top two videos on the YouTube U.S. songs chart — he doesn’t need to. His actions do the talking.
This year alone, Nas (real name Montero Lamar Hill) has released one video that features him giving Satan a lap dance — for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” — and another, prison-themed one that has him and several male dancers gyrating nude, albeit with their privates pixelated, in a shower (“Industry Baby”); delivered a sexually loaded performance on “Saturday Night Live” during which he split his pants and finished the song holding his crotch (that was an accident); and most controversial of all, kissed one of his male dancers full on the mouth on the BET Awards (that was no accident)...
[...]  “Honestly, I believe the pandemic helped me get out of the idea of trying to please everybody, and the idea of ‘He’s a cool gay person; he’s an acceptable gay person,’” Nas says. “I used to see things like that as a compliment, but it’s not. It just means you’re a people pleaser, and they never become legends. I wanted to be even more authentic in my music and let people into my life. I’m much more confident now — in my music, myself, my sexuality, the things that I believe that I stand for.”
[...]   Intentionally or not, his presence as a proud, successful gay man has led others to reveal their prejudices. At the time of this story’s publication, no fewer than five major rappers — none of whom Nas had mentioned in songs or statements — have publicly and flagrantly displayed their homophobia in response to his stance, most prominently DaBaby...
[...] Nas declines to address the issue or those rappers’ negative comments directly. “The honest truth is, I don’t want to speak on a lot of the homophobia within rap because I feel like this is a very dangerous playing field,” he says. “It’s more for my own safety rather than anything else.” Does that mean he’s felt unsafe? “Yeah, a lot of times, absolutely,” he says. “Especially after [‘Montero’]. There was literally someone who chased my car a few days after that video came out, yelling, ‘Fuck you!’ or something. And that’s when I actually started getting security.” Although he’s not sure the video is what caused this stranger to pursue him, “I feel like it couldn’t be a coincidence.”[...]
Would that any part of that could be a surprise.

A Collection by Montero Lamar Hill 🐎
Tumblr media
Thank you Lil Nas X for breaking the gay agenda every day and not only living your truest life through how you present yourself but through your music as well. In his 2021 album MONTERO, Lil Nas X served us with tracks that are not only personal to him but can be relatable to many queer people of color, and I am grateful for that. Through all the hate and pain he was able to give us an album that showed who he truly is and that he was okay with who he is and I think we need more artists today spreading that message. Though some tracks sound similar they each individually have their own personal vibe, with some also having greater meanings than others.
MONTERO(Call Me By Your Name):
youtube
With it being the first track on the song, Call Me By Your Name reels us in with its seductive chimes. Not only does the music sound amazing and throws it back to ancient Egypt but Lil Nas soothes us with his muffled, but understandable, voice.
DEAD RIGHT NOW:
youtube
Off the bat, I knew this song was going to hit different on a personal level since the title is named what it is lol, but overall this song gave what needed to be given. With its message behind individuals wanting you in their life when they were not in yours, Lil Nas gives a brutally honest backstory on the life of pop stars such as him and how people will only want something from you when you are doing good in life.
INDUSTRY BABY:
youtube
The sweet trumpets as the opener of the track grab your attention automatically and make you so excited for what is in store for the rest of the song. With its marching band/ hip hop swag, Industry Baby is hands down one of the best songs to vibe out to or get hype to during a car ride with friends or even to get pumped during a good workout. And don’t get me started on Jack Harlow’s feature on this track. Respectfully, Jack ate that shit up and you can’t but help but love his verse on the track.
THATS WHAT I WANT:
youtube
I’m still trying to get the vibe of the song because at first I didn’t really care for it and I still kinda don’t but the message that we all just someone to love us was a message a rocked with. My favorite aspect of the song was definitely him singing the chorus and pouring out his emotion in it.
THE ART OF REALIZATION:
youtube
Only being 24 seconds long, I really couldn’t tell the message behind this interlude, I guess if you want to call it that, but I feel like there is a hidden message somewhere.
SCOOP:
https://youtu.be/iHLmSXJLH8E
Another song that I kinda didn’t understand the message behind but I think the beat in the song is absolutely fire. Featuring the amazing queen Doja Cat, this track could have been better if her verse was longer for it was way too short.
ONE OF ME:
https://youtu.be/PMHACPDlarM
Nas switches it up with a beautiful, mellow track still delivering his rapping skills. What definitely carried the song was the amazing piano work by Elton John was phenomenal. I became so joyful when I saw him featured on the song for I knew he was going to kill it.
LOST IN THE CITADEL:
https://youtu.be/9YJvvfuLqmA
Nas switches up his poppy style to give us a rock vibe that was absolutely amazing. Whatever band he chose or worked with on this track fucking DID WHAT NEEDED TO BE DONE and I was here for it !!
DOLLA SIGN SLIME:
https://youtu.be/daQsxpitJV4
In my opinion, I was more excited for Megan THee Stallions featured verse on the song rather than Lil Nas rapping and as great of a job he did Megan left NO fucking crumbs because she fucking ate that shit up.
TALES OF DOMINICA:
https://youtu.be/NIgeyUn8fVk
The vibe of this song reminded me of music I listen to when I am doing work or trying to focus and although I didn’t understand the message behind the track I still enjoyed it.
SUN GOES DOWN:
https://youtu.be/NIgeyUn8fVk
LORDYYYY, WHAT A MASTERPIECE THIS SONG WAS !! Nas gives us a backstory behind all the pain he endured growing, not only being a black male in this world but a gay black male in fact. The message of constantly feeling lonely was prominent in the song and this track is by far my favorite song by him for it being so personal and raw.
VOID:
https://youtu.be/ccOr_DTgKEs
Being the longest song on the album, Nas delivers another very personal track in which he sings I believe what was either a note to someone he loved or a note to himself. I could hear the rich emotion behind his voice and I loved it.
DO WHAT I WANT:
https://youtu.be/1m0gYENb9R4
Back to the poppy/rap vibe, I didn’t really care for this song and I probably never will but a cool touch on the song was the voice recordings of him winning awards and his song being praised by a news reporter.
LIFE AFTER SALEM:
https://youtu.be/zq3f3D4sW8Q
With its slightly heavy metal feel, this dark and twisted track was very interesting to listen to since it felt so different from his other songs and the rest of the album.
AM I DREAMING:
https://youtu.be/RJ2eo79GUBM
The acoustic, soothing vibe on this was absolutely amazing and to have Miley Cyrus featured on this song was even more amazing. Her voice captivates my soul every time especially when I can hear the emotion behind her voice in a performance or song, and I sure as hell heard it in this song.
Tumblr media
Honestly, as much as this album had its ups or also had its downs with certain songs. When it comes to music and artist I start to like I always try to find a clear message in their songs and if one is not delivered I find it hard to really ever enjoy the song again. With that being said tho I am proud of Lil Nas X for making such a raw and emotional album for not a lot of artists are doing what he is doing today. I cannot wait to see what he has in store for his fans as his music career has only begun.

Favorite Albums 2021
Magia - Alvaro Soler
Alvaro Soler is one of my favorite artists and his last album was in 2019. When I heard he was coming out with a new album this year, I was excited. Everything about this album is what i love about music. There’s songs that are fast pace and some that are slow, the perfect mix of songs. Alvaro’s voice is also one of my favorite voices because its just smooth to listen. Through his career his songs have always appeared on my end of the year wrap up or even in my top songs. Out of all the albums I have on this list, this album stumped me. I couldn’t figure out what was my favorite because honestly i loved every track. He’s also very handsome to me so, it made it harder for me to pick a song.
Favorite Tracks: Manana and Amor Para Llevar
Tumblr media
Between Us - Little Mix
This shouldn’t shock anyone who follows me. Little mix have been apart of my life for ten years and I wouldn’t change that. After the drama with J, as crazy as it sounds it made me feel closer to the group. I know that’s crazy but it just happen. Between Us is a collection of songs throughout Little Mix’s career plus five new songs. The one song I want to shine light on is Between Us. I love when Little Mix talk about the sisterhood that they have because its clear how much they love each other in this song. When they performed it on Graham Norton Show, it gave everyone a small window the love they shared is deeper than a band. Even when Little Mix takes a break for years, they will always be my favorite girl group because of the impact they had on me. A Mixer forever.
Favorite Tracks: Between Us and Trash
Tumblr media
Montero - Lil Nas X
Gay. That all. No but seriously this album was great for the gays or anyone in LGBTQ+. I think this album does a good job on combing the confidence and fear that a person in LGBTQ+ go through every day. I think this song does a great job showing the hardships a person goes through especially when your gay. The song that does a perfect job on showing this is Sun Goes Down, which is still my favorite. When the song came out, I applaud the music video and the lyrics itself and here I am doing it again. The song does the perfect job on showing the confusion, fear and sadness that a person goes through when coming out or accepting who they are. It's a hard thing and I don’t think it gets talked about in the media. Of course, you can see it in gay media but I’m talking about the main media. I also want to give respect to Lil Nas for his performance where he wears what he wants, it gives the POC gay kids a light.
Favorite Tracks: Industry Baby and Sun Goes Down
Tumblr media
30 - Adele
The hold this album has on me. I love Adele and I listen to her songs a lot and when I saw she releasing an album this year, my heart dropped. it’s been years since Adele has released anything and she didn’t disappoint when she did. Adele went through a divorce and with the divorce, she went through a lot of emotions (No shit). Adele learned how to love herself and how to be a mother to her son through this difficult time. I admire how open Adele was on this album because it really shows the hardships she went through. From having recordings of her and her son talking to her talking about dark thoughts that occured, this album I think is the most vulnerable Adele has been within her music. The one track that I related to the most was To Be Loved. This track no matter what, makes me cry. The lyrics within this song are the emotions I felt through my life. Dare I say it, I think To Be Loved is my favorite song of 2021.
Favorite Tracks: To Be Loved and Hold On
Tumblr media
Queendom - Red Velvet
When I say I dropped everything when I saw Red Velvet making a comeback, mama I mean it. First off, we have Red Velvet as ot5 which was long awaited and second off, they all shined this comeback. The vocals on this album shows why Red Velvet are one of the best vocal groups in Kpop. Irene’s deep voice in Queendom, Yeri’s rap, Wendy’s high notes, Joy’s voice in pose and Seulgi’s smooth voice. This album showcased all of the talents that they have and then some. Queendom is my favorite Kpop song this year but since its in my albums, it won’t appear on my list for my favorite kpop songs. I didn’t think it was fair lol. Queendom came out when there wasn’t a lot of cute songs and I’ve said this so many times but I love cute songs. I thrive off of cute or quirky songs. Queendom was everything to me.
Favorite Tracks: Queendom and Pose

Dystopia: Road to Utopia - Dreamcatcher
Let’s take a 180. Dreamcatcher has never disappointed me. The title tracks and b-sides are perfection to me. So far, I haven’t disliked one song they released. That’s rare for me. Between this and Summer Holiday, i had a hard time to pick which one was my favorite. Dystopia won because of the title track, Odd Eye. i love BEcause but Odd Eye has my whole soul. The build up in the song was dramatic and the vocals in the song was demanding, something I always note with Dreamcatcher. The dance in Odd Eye blew me away and hearing this with a live band was something else during their concert. I can’t wait to see Dreamcatcher’s next storyline!
Favorite Tracks: Odd Eye and Wind Blows

Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land - Marina
The most vintage album I have heard this year. This album sounds like it came from the 60′s but with 80′s sounds? I really don’t know how to explain this album but I think Vintage does it justice. I love this album and how unique it is. Marina’s voice is truly unique and every time I hear it, it always shocks me because of how deep it is or how it sounds nostalgic. I love how this album touches on issues on individually and on women issues. It does a good job on mixing the two at some points. I love the guitar and drums throughout the album making the songs sound even more vintage. Also the music videos where so weird but cool (It’s a good thing). Her album artwork is also one my favorite artwork from this year. I just love the colors in the picture.
Favorite Tracks: Flowers and Venus Fly Trap

Like Water - Wendy
Seeing Wendy being active this year gave me so much happiness. You see, Wendy and I share similar injuries and to see her thriving makes me so proud of her. When I first listened to Like Water, I cried. I missed hearing Wendy’s voice and seeing her perform that it felt like a new artist. Wendy’s voice is one the most powerful voices within Kpop and hearing her hit the high notes bring peace to my heart. I’m also proud of her because I know the hardships she had to go through just to sing again. She said in an interview that she had to teach herself how to sing again because of the injury on her cheek. This album brings me comfort and honestly I want Wendy to release more songs like this album. Wendy’s voice is perfect for ballads because of the emotion she can showcase throughout. And yes Wendy I will always believe in you.
Favorite Tracks: When This Rain Stops and Best Friend
Tumblr media
Hello - Joy
The soloist that SM didn’t think would do good, dominated 2021. Joy’s Hello album is the perfect mixture of cute and elegant, exactly how I would describe Joy. Joy’s voice does a perfect job on showing emotion and how soft her vocals are. In Hello, her vocals are relaxing but exciting at the same time. I know there were some people that were annoyed that it was a re-do of older songs but honestly it didn’t matter to me because I knew Joy would do great. I think Joy’s voice have been underrated until recently. I think in Umpah Umpah era, people really started seeing Joy as a proper vocalist. Joy’s voice is a disney princess to me, its so sweet and soft. Even down to the music video was Joy. This whole album showed the world who Joy was and I’m so proud of her.
Favorite Tracks: Hello and Day By Day
Tumblr media
Voyage - Abba
I almost fainted when I saw Abba coming back. When I saw it was trending on tumblr that Abba was coming back, I thought I was high. I think it said its been 40 years since they made music basically before I was born. Abba holds a special place in my heart because my mom loves them. Again, Abba is big within the gay community which is another reason why I know them. Abba sounds the same from the 70s. The album sounds like when you go through your old yearbooks and you remember all the times you had through school with your friends. This album is mature within the view on the world and such as relationships. I’m still shock that Abba came back but I’m not complaining.

Daily Blog #44: September 20, 2021
I know neither of you are reading this, but thank you. You really gave me a much needed boost tonight...
It's just kinda been shit lately, but you both showed me that you love me, and I am infinitely grateful to have you in my life; thanks for being a part of me.
I need shit like that, just sitting and talking for an hour or two- doesn't even matter if it's positive or just ranting about stuff being shit... I just really need physical interaction or I kinda lose it...
Right now I'm listening to Lil Nas X's album Montero; it's beautiful, and I love how genuine he is with the listener. Each song has a distinct sound to it, and that is so admirable.
I love this man. He's so sweet. You go dude.
I think my favorite track is probably "That's What I Want," because I feel that so hard.
I also love Sun Goes Down, Am I Dreaming, Industry Baby, and Montero; of course every song is great, buy those are the ones that really stand out to me.
I hope you find so so so so much love and admiration in your life.
And for fluff's sake, Montero needs to be AOTY; it's so genuine and it's really an incredible piece and tale of life as a gay black man; a discriminated-against minority on more than one level.
The lyric in Sun Goes Down reads "I'ma make my fans so proud of me."
I'm so proud of you Lil Nas. I love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ don't ever let them take you down.
I'm just in a really peaceful mood rn, laying in my car with this masterpiece playing.
I wish my partner would text me; I just wanna know that they're there.
What can I do though...
I need people... I'm so glad that I have such good friends...
I love you all. Please keep yourselves happy and healthy- if you're not happy, tell me about it... Don't hide your dismay; I wanna see the ugly stuff and I want to help you through it. You deserve the same support you give me, if not more.
I hate who I used to be, but I think I'm chill now.
Last track. I'ma just listen to it. Bye.
Omg it's beautiful. I love him. My boy.
I'm inside now.
I guess I should go to sleep
Yeah, sleep time.
Night.

Honestly I think Lil Nas X is valid in posting his new M/V. I’m fairly certain other than Industry Baby and Montero his music videos in general have been sfw and viewer friendly.
And you can’t tell me kids didn’t catch a glimpse of WAP or Anaconda or any of the more explicit stuff that straight artists put out. (I saw anaconda, got grossed out and exited immediately) I’m pretty sure that if we wanted to educate kids on what gay couples look like we can use artists like Hayley Kiyoko who also have sfw MVs. And don’t deliberately show children inappropriate content. Actually monitor what comes on their feed people.

Just because: Am I dreaming that’s what I want
Lil Nas X has released the full album of Montero recently, and additional videos/singles have been released as a result.
He could scarcely do a harder turn from the imagery and uptempo/harder-edged music in “Montero (call me by your name)” and “Industry baby” than with “Am I Dreaming”, in which no person actually appears. It’s just a surprisingly pastel-like dreamscape, more or less.
youtube
And then we veer back to harder edges and what looks like a very personal storyline with “That’s what I want”. (Including, oddly, the choice to frame it in 4:3 format, possibly because it takes place in the past when that was how television was done -- although, that said, he’s not old enough himself to remember that time, I don’t think.)
youtube
His channel has all of the songs -- it looks like it’s a full video concept album.
The channel also includes “No one showed up to my baby shower :(” which was followed a day later the announcement video from the day the album dropped, which is ... a trip and a half. It also includes the words “bussy water”, which is a phrase I never thought I’d hear in that sort of context, and I’ll bet a good chunk of his fans have no idea what that is, either.
And now to close with something completely different (and I didn’t know he could sustain a register quite that low):
youtube
And for something even more completely different:
youtube
And for something less completely different: the VMAs. And that is One Very Pink Set, featuring people who are periodically sparklingly pinkly scantily clad.
