Christmas Everlasting (Hallmark, 2018)

I’m gonna cry.

Starring: Tatyana Ali, Dondre Whitfield, Dennis Haysbert, Patti LaBelle

Plot Synopsis: Just before Christmas, Lucy returns to her hometown after the passing of her beloved sister. Because of a clause in the will, Lucy stays through the holidays and sees glimpses of her sister’s joyful life that help relieve guilt she harbored over an accident that left her sister with cognitive difficulties. She celebrates the holidays with her uncle, meets her sister’s friends and reunites with her high school love, Peter. When Peter reveals a secret from her sister’s past, Lucy is conflicted. As Christmas approaches, Lucy must decide how to handle this revelation and if new friendships and the rekindled relationship with Peter will prompt a move back to her hometown. (x)

In My Humble Opinion: In all honesty, I thought it would take a lot longer to reach this point, but I am happy it didn’t! Hallmark has embraced black people! And not only in its regular romantic comedies, but in its big deal Hallmark Hall of Fame movies! It’s a good kind of weird to see Hallmark ads bragging about a cast filled with non-white people and I hope it happens more often!

I also hope it happens with better movies. Christmas Everlasting had promise, but it feels less like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie and more like your average Hallmark Movies & Mysteries joint. For one thing, it’s about the 89th film this year about a person who is spending her last Christmas at a childhood house before it’s sold to someone else. It’s also (spoiler alert!) the 89th film this year where the house ends up not being sold at the last minute. I am at the point where if i hear about one more house potentially being sold this holiday season, I might scream.

And even the ways that Christmas Everlasting tries to differentiate itself ends up being busts. There’s one big plot twist that is introduced towards the end that I thought would require more reflection and plot development, but then it went to commercial and the announcer said the conclusion was coming up, and I was just sitting in my recliner like, “Seriously? Why?”

Don’t get me started on Dennis Haysbert and Patti LaBelle’s role because they could practically be written out without the plot changing.

In many ways, Christmas Everlasting is a gamechanger for how Hallmark approaches its holiday slate, and I hope Hallmark keeps going down that road and makes more movies with diverse casts that reflect the world we live in (maybe an explicitly LGBT character next year, Hallmark? That’d be cool). I also hope that these movies are better than Christmas Everlasting when they do come out.

Because I ended up appreciating Christmas Everlasting more for the change it stood for, than what it actually was. And that’s a bit of a bummer.

Watch If: You’re having both turkey and ham for Christmas, if you need to learn what Cookiemas is, or if you tell everyone about your sister’s haircuts.

Skip If: You can’t give the gift of forgiving yourself this Christmas, if you’re fine without knowing who Nat King Cole is, or if you are not 100% happy with your job.
