#58 #dontpush #sometimes We went to mall this evening just to “walk around.” We ended up going to a particular store where the 2 youngest wanted something. They “needed” some clothes. Surprise. Surprise. Well, technically they're growing so they do need clothes and it is getting close to Christmas. So I obliged. One selected a jacket. (She likes to wear jackets even in the Florida heat.) One selected a hoodie. (Same as above.) Needless to say, I was not in concurrence with their selection. I casually insisted that one was ugly and the other was too big. And asked them why choose outerwear when they could get something else especially since we're not in a cold place. They weren't hearing it. I insisted some more and they made their case as well. One knowing my affinity for not paying full price noted that the items were half off. Ok. Ok. I relented. We bought their items and they proudly walked out of the door. Triumphant again. I could have said no and that's final. But why push it on this occasion. This was not something grave where I needed to win. It was just a jacket and hoodie. I don't always agree with their choice of clothes, but it's not harming anything. It makes them the unique young adults that they are. The point? We often have times where we want our way and another person want another way. It's crucial to step back and see if what you want is really that important. If it's not, make the decision to not push for it and let it go. Oftentimes, the relationship is worth more than you winning. There are, of course, times where you do need to push, especially when it comes to your values, your security and other important items.
