Forestella

This was originally a tweet but - it grew too big so here it goes. I have to just... rant a bit about Forestella and how much I love them because they are doing so many things right.

Fundamentally they are comprised of four fantastic singers who are incredibly talented (obviously) but have also put in the work to understand how to use their instruments. But just pure talent and well-honed skill is not enough. Not all singers work in an ensemble, and not all ensembles are comprised of The Best ™ singers while still being ‘good’. These 4, however, understand HOW to sing with one another, they are constantly in sync.

They know when to push their own voice forward, and when to let it fall behind to support. They know how to harmonize and let one another shine. No one singer dominates but each is allowed time to shine but then time to support. The overall quality of the performance is what matters.

Which gets me to – these aren’t just 4 singers. Singing =/= performance ability. Vocal technique and skill does not necessarily translate to stage presence. These are all different skills. But here you have 4 men with stage experience in opera, theater and a rock band. It shows.

They were one of the best live performances I’ve ever been to because they understood *how* to perform. They were 4 men on an empty stage and they filled every inch of the performance space. There was no where to look but them. They were compelling and charismatic.

But it isn't enough to be naturally talented, be skilled, know how to work as a team, cultivate stage presence, etc. So much of a group’s quality/success actually hinges on things out of their control. What songs they sing, how they are sung, the music, in kpop the staging/live performance, etc.

Which for Forestella – is absolutely phenomenal. We gripe constantly (with good reason) about company mismanagement but their managers are giving them so much of what they need to succeed. Whoever is selecting their songs and then whoever is arranging them absolutely knows what they are doing. They are selecting songs that highlight all of the group’s strengths and arranging them in ways that are interesting and moving. They are really letting them shine. Then they send them out on stages with the scale and thought needed to truly set a sense of place.

I’m just saying that success esp in the kpop world is such a multi-faceted thing. It is not enough to be talented, it is not enough to be skilled, there are so many talented and skilled people in this industry who are passed by day after day. There is a lot more that goes into all of this.

Forestella is very much niche and aren’t really going to call to the larger kpop audience but they and their management seem to know that. Instead they understand, fundamentally, who they are and their strengths and they play to those, maximize them. And its breathtaking to watch.

Hello Everyone!

Today I will write about a slightly different topic than before. So far I have presented series, but now I will talk about a musical group called Forestella.

Forestella is a South Korean crossover male vocal quartet. The group was formed in 2017 through JTBC's singing contest Phantom Singer season 2. They were the winners of that season and became the most famous quartet throughout the whole show (3 seasons + All Stars). Sadly, I haven't seen their season yet, as English subtitles are not available anywhere but I will watch it either way, after finishing season 1 (which I stopped watching, because that too, only had English subs in the first half of the episodes). Since August 1, 2021, they've been under Beat Interactive, along with the K-pop band A.C.E, who I'm also a fan of.

As you can guess, the group consists of four members: Bae Doo-hoon (배두훈, tenor, 36), Kang Hyung-ho (강형호, countertenor, 33), Cho Min-gyu (조민규, tenor, 31) and Ko Woo-rim (고우림, bass, 27). Woorim and Mingyu are opera singers and the latter is the leader of the quartet. Doohoon is a musical actor, he studied acting at Korea National University of Arts. Hyungho is probably the most well-known of the four, the video of him singing both Christine's and the Phantom's part in the song Phantom of the Opera really blew up, many international youtubers have reacted to it. It's also worthy of note, that he hadn’t studied music before going on Phantom Singer, showing that he really has a natural talent for singing. He’s an amateur rock singer, who used to work as a chemist.

The name Forestella comes from two words: forest and stella (Italian for star). The Italian touch really comes in handy when we think about how many languages Forestella has sung in. They mostly sing in Korean, Italian and English, but songs in French, Spanish and other languages are found in their discography too. They currently have four albums; Evolution, Mystique, The Forestella and The Beginning: World Tree.

Forestella has appeared on Two Yoo Project and Immortal Songs, a competition where each episode features singers or bands who perform their reinterpreted versions of (older) songs. Currently, they are filming their youtube series called Forrecipe In The Woods.

In my opinion, Forestella is 100% worth to stan. I'm pretty open-minded about music, so I gladly listen to classical songs, but this group was the one that made me really interested in opera pieces. The members have fun personalities too, and they might be the most talented musicians I have ever known.

omg when forestella covered legends never die on immortal songs someone said is this a forshadowing for worlds in korea this year and i did not believe because forestella's music and riot's music are very different and the fanbases are basically 2 different circles

but why am i just now seeing hyungho also covered rise at their seoul concert a couple months ago?!!! this was around the same time as their immortal songs too like 2 league songs back to back that's kinda suspicious omg unless he's a fan but why now all of a sudden?! when worlds is heading back to korea ahhh

i don't think they're mainstream enough though but if it manages to happen even if they're not doing the main song i will explode maybe it'll be like a featuring like bobby did for rise
